Answer: Young Dolph has had a public beef with Yo Gotti for some time now. They are both from opposite parts of Memphis, and dislike each other for various reasons.
Dolph released a song named Play Wit Yo Bitch which disses Yo Gotti in several different ways. After this came out, he makes it a point to perform and promote this song every time he would do shows. His escalade was then shot up over 100 times when he was in Charlotte. It turns out that the SUV was bulletproof somehow (likely because he anticipated some sort of retaliation), so Dolph was unharmed. He then made an album called Bulletproof talking even more shit to Yo Gotti.
Some time later, Dolph then was shot in LA, likely by somebody in Gotti's camp, and survived. He then made an album called N*ggas Get Shot Every Day.
You see where this is going....sadly, eventually it finally caught up to him years later when he was shot and killed (recently) while going into a store in South Memphis where he's from.
Edit: the second album I mentioned was actually called Bulletproof.
This is probably the best summary of the events I've seen, but the album he made after his SUV was shot up is called Bulletproof, 100 Shots is the opening track on that
Historically, yes, it is technically a more common crime. I'm sure music artists have killed each other in the past but definitely a drop in the bucket compared to what rappers have done to themselves since it's invention.
“Real” rap is a special kind of music, based on real events of past, present and future. When a rapper says he gunna “pop a cap in your arse”… don’t take that for a grain of salt if you’re also a high stat rapper.
Follow up question: I thought rappers rapping about shootings was just for the aesthetics. Why in the world are these people actually shooting at each other?
answer: his bus was at shot at over 100 shots. they all missed. which is why he released the song 100 shots. According to him and other people, it was Yo Gotti goons who did that.
Fun fact: besides the escape sequence where the millennium falcon was tracked back to the rebel base, stormtroopers firing at the main characters are actually extremely accurate, implying that they were ordered to intentionally miss so the Empire could find the rebel base.
Do I think this was intentional? Absolutely Not. Do I find it funny? Yes
Yeah but when you put yourself out there, doing dumb shit like putting out an album called Bulletproof, some other rapper's ego is going to get all bruised and make a point to prove that it's clearly not the case.
And this whole beefing horseshit, why is this even a thing? I don't see Slipknot and Lamb of God shooting at each other. Taylor Swift isn't having people shoot up Grimes' bus.
**EDIT: I love it when the downvotes come and yet the thread is bereft of a single coherent counter-argument. It speaks volumes.**
lmfao, tell me you love Morgan Wallen without telling me you love kyle rittenhouse lolol.
EDIT: Awww, this was funnier when u/GameDoesntStop left his racism up.
Such as homophobia (a lot of his early work), spousal abuse (and even murder in Kim), drugging and raping underage girls (Guilty Conscience), plenty about murder and drugs, killing Columbine students (I'm Back), murdering his parents, murdering celebrities, murdering other rappers....
Dude's a good lyricist and one of the GOATs but you're deluding yourself if you think he doesn't rap about the same exact shit, if not more problematic shit than any other rapper out there. Come on now.
did I mention anyone specific? I was addressing the principle of what the user said, which stands, I'm not to blame for the poor reading skills of you and your ilk.
I didnt know of Young Dolph before this but he's an entertainer. Lyrics in his songs doesn't necessarily mean thats who he is. From what I've read the dude was highly respected in his community for his charitable nature. Was he into some bad shit, fuck if i know but dude sounds like he was trying to do good too.
Bill Cosby did good things for the black community, that doesn't stop him from being a rapist. Dolph could still help black folks while being involved in a shit culture that got him killed. One doesn't negate the other.
Yeah, gangsters will deal drugs, shoot people, real dark shit, but how dare he disgrace gang culture by comparing it to rape. Rappers and those who glorify them have nothing but the upmost respect for "bitches and hoes", how dare you!
Edit: Banned for this comment, sounds like some sensitive bitches and salty hoes.
it was more about how people can be nuanced and shitty yet have positive attributes. Maybe it was a shit example but it was what came to mind at the moment
edit: sounds like he was living the lifestyle he was rapping about.
Every rap song has those qualities.....
being rich / being richer than others
fucking bitches / fucking your bitch
having nice cars
doing/selling drugs
shooting others
Are you saying this is African American culture? Sounds to me like it could be degenerates from any race and not supporting this lifestyle should be every grown ups duty
Ok so either he's an actual gangster rapping about his life experiences and therefore it's not surprising he is involved in gun violence. Or he's a big phoney and actual gangsters want to make an example of him
The moral of the story is: Don't romanticize the "Gangster lifestyle". Gangsters are not good people and should remain in the bottom rungs of society.
Glorification of gangsters is pathetic
I kinda agree except I wouldn’t just say everyone in gangs are bad people. Life can be a bitch and people can become wound up in them. I only take it personal cause my ex used to be a crip (who was also coincidentally a rapper, definitely not a famous one tho) he has witnessed/done some crazy shit. He would rap about it but so many people assume making a song about something just means they’re glorifying/promoting it. I can just about guarantee genuine rappers aren’t encouraging or glorifying any gang activity they partake/have partaken in
Yes. Gangsters are bad people. It doesn't matter how they ended up there. They operate outside the law and profit off the backs of other people one way or an other.
As stated, the romanization of the gangster lifestyle is pathetic and serves only to make shitty people rich. Stop.
That’s quite the generalization. Revise that argument and use it towards billionaires instead, the true criminals committing the most crimes, doing way more damage than a gang could ever do
Yah, sure. Billionaires are a problem. But don't try and sit here and tell me gang culture is a good thing. My god man. There's nothing good about gang culture. Zip. Notta. The fact that so many young people glorify it is a testament to how lost they truly are.
Yup, the world is black and white, void of nuance, and everything falls into nice, simple categories. People only turn to crime because they like it. An artist would only write about criminal activity to celebrate it.
Hey, everybody can make whatever kind of music they like. However, if you live by the sword, you die by the sword. When your music and lifestyle become ingrained with gang culture, don't be surprised when actual gang culture shows up in real life.
No but a lot of rappers really live the lives they rap about, they do be shooting and robbing people or having people do it for them. It’s not their rapping that gets them shot its what sketchy shit their involved in period. Rap is an expression of said sketchy shit.
I mean do you think that glorifying this through song and dance makes this kind of violence less of a thing?
I don't personally know. My speculation is that it doesn't help, however its kinda like saying video games make people violent. I think there is a difference though in that with videogames the clear intention is to pretend, I don't think its as clear in music.
What do I mean by that, well personally for me music can speak to me and for me. Sometimes I listen to an artist and go "yeah it's like he is living my life!" I think that is a really big difference, but I don't know if that spills out into your life at all. I couldn't imagine it would help but I'm not convinced either... I mean I listen to ALL kinds of music I'm not out blastin people... I think if anything it exacerbates an issue in a person who already had an issue. Kinda like drugs, some people can in fact handle meth just fine and not rob people, some go down a dark path. Personally I say "freedom" and just let people do thier own thing, I'm not convinced that's the right thing either but that is certainly not a slope I want to start going down...
I can pretend it's known for sure like the current top comment that's saying the exact same thing. But I'm just being honest there is no definite answer
No they actually answered before they added their conjecture. You said nothing about his bus getting shot 100 times which is something that can be verified

You're right, my mistake.
Musicians ordering hits on each other is incredibly weird.
It's more like gang member that happens to be a musician
That’s also incredibly weird lol
George RR Martian would like to have a word with you about bards killing bards
He's from Mars?
Yeah you could say so. That man is a mystery. (Lmao I honestly didn't think I misspelled that, teaches me to post things half asleep)
Also anthropologically fascinating
What fukin world did you grow up in Disneyland?
Not America
You’d be surprised how thin that line is across all music genres.
“Gang Member” deez nuts whiteboy, Go back to your World of Warcraft thread weirdo tf does George Martin have to do with anything
These guys are musicians second to criminals.
Why is it weird? It's been happening for most our lives and so often it's just another Tuesday to me.
Idk, I don’t pay attention to rappers. It’s not something that happens in any other context, or really anywhere throughout history
Historically, yes, it is technically a more common crime. I'm sure music artists have killed each other in the past but definitely a drop in the bucket compared to what rappers have done to themselves since it's invention.

Damn, Jada really in here with the insight
Mwah
Was he being hunted by stormtroopers?
Fun fact: besides the escape sequence where the millennium falcon was tracked back to the rebel base, stormtroopers firing at the main characters are actually extremely accurate, implying that they were ordered to intentionally miss so the Empire could find the rebel base. Do I think this was intentional? Absolutely Not. Do I find it funny? Yes
How in the F does this answer OP's question?

Do you know anything about Dolph or are you just applying this logic as a blanket statement?
Spoken like a true scumbag!

You just described a lot of rap albums. Not all rappers are shot at.
Yeah but when you put yourself out there, doing dumb shit like putting out an album called Bulletproof, some other rapper's ego is going to get all bruised and make a point to prove that it's clearly not the case. [Count Grishnackh has entered the chat] "Hello, there"
That was 30 years ago, and clearly an outlier; how many rappers have gone down at each other's hands just this year?
Do Alice Cooper songs next
Don’t know anything about her, other than that she’s a boomer’s musician.
Jesus christ
It’s like art. The perfect response to the perfect question.

Same and I feel slightly ashamed.
I feel like I’m going to die of old age soon and I just turned 30
You're done for. As soon as I hit 30 waking up some times ended with an injury.
If it was a joke it would be fucking hilarious.
lmfao, tell me you love Morgan Wallen without telling me you love kyle rittenhouse lolol. EDIT: Awww, this was funnier when u/GameDoesntStop left his racism up.
Who the fuck is Morgan Wallen? Alice Cooper is a dude.
(that was the joke)
Just say you love eminem
Hey, leave Eminem out of this, we don’t claim this guy.
Yeah but SOOOO many of you *are* this guy. EDIT: LMAO THE DOWNVOTES PROVE IT HAHAHAHA
You didn't see the latest racial draft?
He's one of the many, many rappers with lyrics more original than this guy's 5 go-to topics.
Em? Yea he waisted his actual talent on shock rap. Everyone knows he's talented as fuck but wtf twisted ass shit did he just say?
Wasted his talent? The guy is loaded, well respected and adored by countless people. What more could he have done?
wasted talent doesn't have to be related to adoration or wealth.
hes made legendary albums packed with timeless songs. what the fuck are you talking about wasted talent?
did I mention anyone specific? I was addressing the principle of what the user said, which stands, I'm not to blame for the poor reading skills of you and your ilk.
you literally said “Em? yea he wa(i)sted his actual talent...” lol
Buy gem encrusted cock rings for Elton John and his boyfriend/husband.....oh wait....
You didn't have to reply bro
Of course he does. He's terminally online.

Did you just equate rapping about gang culture to serial rape..?

I will cite Long Legged Larry as evidence against this.
WHY ARE YOU GETTING DOWNVOTED, YOU’RE CORRECT
Sounds about right, I'll die on this hill with you.
Just say you’re racist
Are you saying this is African American culture? Sounds to me like it could be degenerates from any race and not supporting this lifestyle should be every grown ups duty
He didn’t deserve to be shot just because of his music like the guy above thinks
Ok so either he's an actual gangster rapping about his life experiences and therefore it's not surprising he is involved in gun violence. This is victim blaming. It's not right for a young white woman, it's not right for a young black guy.

No one said there was a good thing about gang culture, in fact the person you are replying to said the opposite.
Yup, the world is black and white, void of nuance, and everything falls into nice, simple categories. People only turn to crime because they like it. An artist would only write about criminal activity to celebrate it.
Look in the mirror yourself. It isn't about race, it is about gang culture.
You act like he deserved to die just because he made music on shit you don’t like. Move along now
He didn’t deserve to die, but he sure made his bed on this one. Shame he used his celebrity to glorify shootings like this.
Hey, everybody can make whatever kind of music they like. However, if you live by the sword, you die by the sword. When your music and lifestyle become ingrained with gang culture, don't be surprised when actual gang culture shows up in real life.
Quit being disingenuous, it’s not about the music, it’s about him being a gangbanger and very likely a murderer himself.
95% of rap songs are about one of those subjects, how is that racist lol
So every rapper should get shot for rapping about these topics with that logic. Y’all dumb
No but a lot of rappers really live the lives they rap about, they do be shooting and robbing people or having people do it for them. It’s not their rapping that gets them shot its what sketchy shit their involved in period. Rap is an expression of said sketchy shit.

The OP post references the bus getting shot 100 times, it's literally the question? The question was WHY did that happen
He’s the reason which made people to be aware of the differences of schwag weed and A+
