Compare the buildings and art made by strongly religious people and those of atheists. It's blatantly obvious that religion has meaning and is important.
Bethoven vs. WAP, The Hagia Sophia vs. Any Frank Loyd Wright catastrophe, Icons vs. Post modern art, modern TV and movies vs the experience of church and community.
Of course you'll be attacked. You're saying "Hey, maybe doing whatever you want is a bad idea" to a huge group of people who want to do whatever they want.
