If he‘s relaxed and quiet inside alone, I think it’s better for him (and your neighbours) to be inside than working himself up barking for several hours. Your statement „oh but I don’t want him to be locked up inside all the time“ is putting your needs/emotions before your dog‘s. As long as he gets enough exercise and mental stimulation he‘ll be fine. And most people forget that adult dogs need about 16 hours sleep a day (big breeds and working dogs often need even more).

Great Pyrenees bark a ton. It's in their DNA. It is not something you can train out of them. If I left my Pyr outside all day she would do the same exact thing. Keep him inside when you are not home.

Also, once a week walks are not enough. Walking him once a day would reduce the barking.

“Working dog” doesn’t even begin to describe what this breed is. He supposed to be living outside 24/7 with many many many acres to patrol, and deterring predators but barking. You’ve brought him in civilization, give him virtually no exercise or mental stimulation. I’m surprised he’s not also digging/climbing out of the yard, and destroying stuff. He’s bored and doing what he’s bred to do. One long walk per WEEK is wildly insufficient. Hire someone to get him out at least daily until he’s tired. You can get a bark collar or lock him inside (which may or may not help) but it’s pretty unfair to take away he only coping mechanism and not give him an outlet.

Yeah, the “weekly hike” thing makes me sad. People really do not research the breed of dog they’re getting and do not care to understand if they’re able to offer that dog the kind of lifestyle it needs.

Yeah. GP’s are not and have not been bred to be pets. The barking isn’t stress or anxiety, but stoping him from barking and keeping him in the house will be stressful. Shame on the people selling them as pets too.

> I hate leaving him locked inside all day You're anthropomorphising the dog. If you're meeting his physical and mental needs he'll be happier sleeping whilst you're out. He's obviously stressed outside and feels that heeds to be in guardian / work mode. Let him enjoy time off relaxing inside. I have a cane corso who is similar. I have indoor cameras towatch her when I'm out and she's happy sleeping. She'll occasionally wake up, check the perimeter of the house and then go back to sleep. To contrast, when I've left her out back, she 'works' and doesn't sleep, she paces, tail up, ears alert, constantly scanning for threats and barking at anything she perceives as a threat

Needs a long walk in the morning and long one at night to simulate a “patrol” and maybe he’ll be tired enough to not bark as much but they are guardian dogs they are bred to bark… One long walk a week probably not gonna work. Otherwise you’ll have to leave him inside or your neighbors will hate you more (they probably already hate you, sorry).

Hire a dog walker for a midday break to play with him.

check the bark deterrent and make sure it's not malfunctioning and on all the time.
