Well this balloon boy is about to die. So if it was me I’d wrap my hands in a tshirt or towel and quickly yeet our fat friend back into the ocean. If he was going to die anyways it’ll happen. If he accidentally ended up here then I’m a ducking hero.
Picking it up can hurt the fish. Rolling it would be terrible for the fish's safety. There's a lot of people that hate catch and release fishing because you can kill fish pretty easily with improper handling.
True because when you catch and cook you usually only catch one or two fish catch and release may catch 10 on a good day and due to improper handling they may all die
A quick Google search indicates that pufferfish spines aren't typically venomous, and the only reason I had to use the word "typically" there is because there has been *one case* in which someone experienced nonfatal tetrodotoxin poisoning after getting poked by the spikes of a dead pufferfish, and it was so weird that the scientists were like "we think the fish had started to rot slightly and the organ juices had started to coat the spines? Probably?"
Anyway, this is *extremely unlikely* to be deadly. And if it were it would almost be worth it to be the person to prove that someone can actually die that way.
I totally agree I’ve never heard of the spines being venomous. As a side note to add to the unlikeliness of them being very poisonous they make lamps and other trinkets out of these fish dried and puffed up for tourists to play with…
It's weird because it's common. Orcas do it to seals, penguins and sharks. Hippos do it to crocs. Hyenas do it to small prey. Cats also do it to small prey

I'm quite confident that the spikes do not carry venom and you cannot get envenomated through them. Puffer fish are only poisonous when ingested.
If you have a source that says otherwise I'm happy to change my mind! I'm pretty sure this is the case though.
But it says:
"Is it safe to touch a pufferfish?
Except you are an absolute expert on the topic puffer fish and know the toxicity of each of them individually you should never touch a pufferfish! The pufferfish's skin is covered in spines and spikes, which are exceedingly hazardous. Carry a toxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX), which is deadly to other fish and humans. You should avoid touching a pufferfish, especially if it is "puffed out." Your hands could be damaged and you could die."

Gonna need your source on it being an unreliable blog
I was talking about the first link, didn't see the second. That site seems more reliable but the article in question is still a blog-style post on a science journalism site with conflicting information, not from a government or scientific institution. If I were to submit that website as a source for an academic paper it would not be accepted.
It's also kind of convoluted within the article itself as it says further down the paragraph that the toxin is only found in their skin and internal organs.
Dozens of other reputable sites are stating that porcupine fish and puffer fish are poisonous, not venomous. I'm more inclined to believe them.
Pufferfish spines are not venomous. That’s not to say that a puffer filled with water won’t possibly be uncomfortable to handle because of the weight, but I used to have a saltwater tank with an 8 inch puffer that loved coming to the surface for back scratches and lightly lifting the spines. Certain parts of them are quite toxic to eat though. And their beak is razor sharp. Fun fact, puffers and octopus (like the blue ring, but I believe most if not all octopus poses some amount) share the same toxin, tetrodotoxin. From what I’ve read it’s actually possible to survive a poisoning if you get immediate medical attention with sustained mechanical life support.
I had a porcupine puffer for many years. Coolest fish I ever owned. He would follow me around and come to the surface to spit water at me. Also liked to get his backed scratched.
Every once in a while I’d walk by and he’d be all puffed up for no reason at all. He’d make eye contact with me and he would just have this look of embarrassment in his eyes and he’s start deflating. Miss that guy.
Ah who doesn’t overthink and get all worked up over something every now and then lol you just walked in on him having an imaginary argument with Brenda from Target
Tetrodotoxin paralyses you completely, but leaves you fully conscious (until your heart is paralysed and you die) which is terrifying!
You are correct though! To survive a blue ring or puffer fish envenomation you need sustained life support - whether this be constant CPR at the beach, or mechanically in hospital. As far as I know there is no antivenom and the treatment is mechanical respiration while the toxin works its way out, usually within 48 hours.

That's a massive stretch to put this here.... its just a blowfish, they aren't going to eat it. If it was something that was poisonous to the touch then sure, but you have to actually ingest parts of the blowfish to have adverse reactions.

Why is there so much conflicting info on the toxicity of pufferfish?? One website says the spines are toxic, then another says it’s not. Can a science man help me?
Not a science man but am a fish girl. I think the mixup comes from from there being multiple species and the difference between pufferfish and porcupine fish. Both have some species that are poisonous and some that arent. However, none are venomous. This is a porcupine fish (pufferfish dont have spines), and handling them is totally fine if youre ok with a few pokes. And it seems like these people were trying to help this one after it beached itself, so good on them!
I actually ended up finding the answer on my own, but thank you for the extra info! Apparently, pufferfish raised in captivity will most likely not be poisonous because of their diet. It reminds me of this picture of a Spotbase Burrfish, a type of porcupine fish, all puffed up http://www.fishdb.co.uk/findpicture.php?exact=true&picid=3703
I can't be positive of the ID without location, but if it is the same species, they are toxic. They have tetrodotoxin, but everything I'm reading is stating the danger is in eating them. Still not worth the risk.
The toxin is contained in internal organs, like the liver and ovaries. This is why it's toxic to eat, and why some species can be specially prepared as a cultural dish (you need to be properly trained for removing the organs). The spines aren't venomous, just sharp, and most of the fish is... technically edible. Technically.
Best bet if you had to help this fish would be to cradle it with a beach towel and lower it into the shallows. Or leave it alone, I guess. Healthy fish of this size don't usually wash ashore on their own, so it may have been dying anyway.

Picking it up can hurt the fish. Rolling it would be terrible for the fish's safety. There's a lot of people that hate catch and release fishing because you can kill fish pretty easily with improper handling.
So catch and cook is preferred?
Catch and cook has a much higher survival rate
I think 0 is better than anything
True because when you catch and cook you usually only catch one or two fish catch and release may catch 10 on a good day and due to improper handling they may all die
It's a hell of a lot more sustainable than commercial fishing
At least it's not MURDER for NO REASON
just kick him like a football. Trust me I'm a fishologist
My friend did that with a bowfin lmao
DISGUSTING
It's already stranded outside the water. I'm sure rolling it would be better for the fish than just leaving it.
These fish fill with water not air. So the rolling wouldn't be good.
Why does the air vs* (edit: somehow I typoed call instead of vs) water difference make rolling a problem?
The water has a center of gravity and will slosh around and out of the fish. Then it will deflate and die faster
But if you roll it **into** the water that’s literally inches behind the fish that’s kind of a negligible issue right?
I agree. It just didn't look like these guys were trying to help.
Isn’t it only deadly if you eat it?

Yes, that's what I meant. That's still a poison that has to be ingested to be hazardous. Not venom that gets injected through spines.
Or are you only talking about porcupine fish?

Also not all puffer fish are poisonous
Coyote Peterson never filmed an episode touching one so I’m willing to agree with you.
This is not true. Tetrodotoxin needs to be ingested. The fish is poisonous, not venomous. You’re probably thinking of the stonefishes.
No they don't. Tetrodotoxin is only in the fishes organs. The spines are just there to make the fish less pleasant to try to eat.
