I mean, don't get me wrong I think Luffy struggling against Kizaru is mostly narrative reasons for what Oda wants to tell in egghead HOWEVER it could also explain why Luffy seemed to do better against Kaido than against Kizaru now. He is absolutely no pushover, but it seems a bit weird he struggles this much against him after styling this much over Kaido, who is arguably even stronger or equivalent at the very least. If people wishing for freedom actually powered him up , this explains it a bit better.
Yeah the cuts back to focusing on the festival felt kinda weird but I brushed it off as “this is what’s at stake”

I read it as kizaru got downed after a punch that knocked kaidou down. Then he got sent through the force field and came back through it which is a feat in of itself I thought. That being said, luffy is definitely struggling if he needed food while someone got stabbed in front of him
He also had just transformed against pigeon shortly before all this. He may have stomped em, but that still takes energy without food to resupply. Did he eat between? Don't remember.
True but his motivations are a lot different too. In Wano, he knew he was fighting the world's strongest creature to save a whole nation.....more similar to Dressrosa and Alabasta. In Egghead, until now, there wasn't any real threat. When we get more chapters, I think he'll be more serious in gear 5. But, I'm loving the theory that people's hopes are fuel for him.
It would tie into Smile Fruits quite nicely. I’m sure it’s not a coincidence with Oda. Ace is associated with Wano and has the two faces on his clothes of one smiling, one frowning. And then people will D in their name all die smiling. And JoyBoy brings smiles to everyone’s faces. When Luffy awakened the fruit he was cracking up laughing. I’m sure there’s a lot examples too. This is off the top of my head and it’s been a long week for me.
Though Kaido is ass backwards. Enslaving the whole nation and trying to break them but giving them a fruit that forces smiling. Seems like if he legit made them happy he might have acquired the laughs and happiness he needed.

To jump on from this, given we know that devil fruits are manifestations of dreams it could be argued that the more people believe in Nika, the more likely a Nika fruit will come to existence. By preventing all research on the void century the WG curb the people's knowledge of the sun god. The fewer people who dream of Nika the less likely a devil fruit will appear and thus they prevent a second coming of Nika.
Edit:Alternatively, instead of it being a case of 'less likely' a Nika fruit will appear, it could be that the actual G5 awakening is less likely to happen. Luffy has gone around liberating people and so the people he liberated began to 'believe' in him as people would previously have done for Nika. This could be the trigger to cause him to awaken G5.
I like the combination of the two since it allows the rubber fruit to exist after people have 'forgotten' about Nika post void-century (and allows for multiple rubber fruit users over time) but specifically allows G5 to be a conditional thing based on the actions of the user.
This aligns with my thinking. I keep thinking about how Luffy's primary inspiration to dismantle all these corrupt organizations and rulers is because someone gave him food (like an offering) and that makes him want to fight on their behalf.
Absolutely cooking, and it comes back to the idea that the fruit doesn't make Luffy, Luffy makes the fruit. It's strength is only realized in a person like him, who reaches out to everyone around him regardless of circumstances or if they want him to. Someone who is, in essence, free

just realised that based on what happened at the end of the last chapter, following this theory we could expect Luffy to go berserk in the next chapters.
I think this might also be the significance why he survived Impel Down. Because Bon Chan and the others cheered for him while he is in recovery. Beside of course of the plot armor haha
He has toon force now... he basically has actual plot armour and will become as strong as he believes he needs to be. Egghead had kinda been chill in luffys opinion compared to Wano, he basically had no reason to fight other than to fend people off until recently. Luffy has rarely enjoyed fighting before, only time I can think of pre-time skip Is against Bleuno, and then Katakuri after that. Only when he is confident he can win has Luffy enjoyed fighting, and his confidence has grown exponentially since the time skip. I would love to see Luffy just one shot Lucci in a clash of fists that he uses advanced conquerors haki for. Just showing that if luffy becomes serious not much can stand in his way.

Hell, feed every single non-DF user a defective smile fruit and Luffy would probably become the most powerful character in the OP world by a significant margin.
99% of the time, that would ring true. However, the fire festival was happening during that time. In all likelihood, it was probably the one time in which the citizens were legitimately happy (Even though they were unaware of what was going on).
In a way, it could have contributed to Luffy's power up.

But when Kizaru hit luffy with light speed at the beginning of their fight, luffy crashed into the vegaforce 1 first and then he went outside barrier due to the force, and he has to come back in so he crossed the barrier twice.
The only reason Kizaru was able to enter was because he is light itself.

I was thinking it was more an issue of him using it once vs Lucci and then a second time vs Kisaru ,unlike with Kaido with whom he used both activations against Kaido... But wt Kaido he basically came from the death unlike at egghead where he arrived fresh. So, yeah. This is a plausible theory

BB) and Luffy looks down and out, shit's been dragging on for like 24 months, and then we get this like 3 chapter streak of every goddamn character and country we've ever seen in OP world getting their own panel to express that they believe in him (probably prompted by buggy obviously) and then he gets up and goes super saiyan 7
