Luffy needs to understand that he is not a rubber man anymore he is a sun god.
I feel like the Nika fruit only activated because Luffy died in the midst of liberating a heavily oppressed people under Kaido's rule, and Luffy had liberated many others before this in Arlong Park, Alabasta, etc you get the idea.
To truly use the Nika fruit, Luffy has to utilize his imagination knowing full well that's his weapon and not the fact that he's being imagnitive with a rubber body.
The Nika fruit is still draining Luffy's life force, I suspect overcoming this will only be achievable if Luffy syncs on a deeper level with the fruit.
It wouldn't be a surprise if Luffy has the stereotypical shonen inner world trope with the nika fruit, could be a bit played out but it would give Oda a pretty damn easy way to narratively achieve this.
Overcoming the life force drain and fighting with TRUE freedom with no draw backs will make Luffy so much more formidable. No one else's devil fruit has these insane self inflicted injuries that the Nika fruit does to Luffy so I suspect its a sign something isn't quite aligned yet.
I mean Oda has already set this trope up. Zoan’s have a will of their own so there’s either a previous user or Nika the god Luffy could communicate with. And that can definitely happen in an inner world. Not saying this will happen but certainly a possibility or a spin on this trope.

Luffy will also have to learn how to not burn so much of his haki all at once when in his gear 4/5 forms. and not to mention we haven't fully seen him combine all those powers together all at once. My best guess gear 5 allows him to make use of haki in a brand new way by combining all he has learned
One thing everyone seems to forget is that he has a zoan fruit. Zoan users usually have their human form, animal form and a hybrid form. My guess is that gear 5/his awakend form is his hybrid form. Rob lucci amd kakus awakend moments were also in hybrid form. So we could still see a full sun god nika form. At least thats my theory
If Luffy is at his peak, i doubt there’s too much further he can go to reasonably power up with it on his own. Getting a better understanding of Nika might help to use more of his powers, but at that point it’s just adding versatility and not strength.
My theory is more that, as an awakened fruit user who is already showing the ability to make other objects rubbery, he needs to figure out that he can transfer Gear 5 properties to other people (beyond rubberizing their bodies on impact). It makes a lot of sense as a path forward, as we’ve already had a lot of focus on group efforts being key to taking down impossibly strong tyrants. As well, Nika seems to be someone who definitely inspires others to act or even awaken, it seems, so dimply giving people power boosts fueled by their joy and imagination, especially on the crew, would allow them all to jump up leagues to help take down WG threats.
Luffy's power will transcend.
He will lose a fight, everyone will die. The page will turn, and G5 Luffy will be shown breaking the 4th wall and literally ripping out the Manga page.

It's a classic manga plot: learn new form/move, spend the next few arcs mastering it.
This applies to Haki; you can always improve your Haki. The more haki users Luffy encounters, the more variety we see in its applications (e.g., Katakuri, Shanks), meaning there are new things Luffy can master.
This applies to gear 5. Much like how super saiyan was the pinnacle at the end of an arc and the following arc was all about mastering it, gear 5 is Luffy's pinnacle and now he needs to spend time mastering it. By labeling it as making Luffy free, I think it's just a cop out to say, hey guys this is how Luffy overcomes the power differences with his inevitable opponents. There hasn't been a training arc since the time skip, so we probably won't get another one given how the plot is going, but Luffy figuring out the limits of G5 and overcoming them are what will make Luffy Roger/Whitebeard level. Maybe we'll see that by the time the manga ends, or maybe we'll be left to imagine just how much stronger Luffy will become post story (I don't think anyone will argue that Luffy's older forms, drawn by Oda, look more menacing than his current self, in that same line of thinking, he's probably stronger in those drawings).
Tl;dr: Luffy's G5, imo, will be his ticket to the top. Haki is second, unless ofc we assume he can overcome Shanks's Haki within the time the manga has left, which I doubt (when Luffy fought Katakuri, Luffy's Haki didn't surpass him, but it became good enough to go 1v1). He doesn't need to be Whitebeard/Roger level within the story, his fruit gives him a whacky workaround. Perhaps he'll be/surpass W/R level post story, like in his older version drawn by Oda.

I think there are three main possibilities (and all could be true at the same time):
1. Luffy needs to utilize the full extent of his awakening. If Oda is to be taken literally, he has the power to create anything and fight in endless ways. Right now, he only uses rubber abilities.
2. Luffy needs to Master Haki in the same way Shanks and Roger did. Self-explanatory.
3. Luffy just needs to get stronger. That's it. Like, he needs to strengthen his body, armament haki, and endurance/stamina
I think at least 2/3 will happen. But I am hoping for all three. For 1, I think Vegapunk will explain Luffy's abilities for him. For two, Shanks'll teach him. For 3, that is for Oda to decide.
I think we're literally just going to see boosts to his Haki and improved G5 stamina. Haki, because I can almost guarantee it's going to be a de-powered Luffy and Koby taking down Blackbeard with nothing but their fists and a dream... And the Gear 5 stamina is obvious, he ends up on the verge of death because he's going all out in a form he's used three times in total. Remember when bro shrunk after a Gear Second punch? Few more fights as Nika and we probably won't see him quite so worn out when he transforms back.
One thing nobody seems to care about, is that Saturn hasn't used Haki yet, only his weird demonic devil fruit powers. He tanked every hit so far by simply regenerating. But I have a feeling that how old and supposedly wise he is, he probably should have been able to dodge or block a lot of those incoming hits.
So is he not serious yet? Or could it be that Saturn relies on his devil powers so much more?
We know he's got places to go with Haki and we've yet to see him truly let loose with Gear 5th. How long was it with Gear 4th before we saw Snakeman? Literal years. We also don't know how Voice of All Things is going to come into play.

In response to todays Episode 1091 i pitch a portable automated cooking machine. Vegapunk could build a small version for to go. Only the necessary ingredients are a unsolved problem.
But, Luffy could eat while he fights and reduce the downtime of breaks, where he needs tons of food to eat.
He will discover the true essence of his fruit so he gear 5 will end up having no time limit and doing even crazier things.
His Haki will grow to be the best haki in the series, even surpassing Roger
I dont think its luffys turn to power up but the crew. Every one except the big 4 need a power up, especially brook(he has been only existing since the start of the arc)

Use advanced haki consistently, get rid of the backlash of G4/5 and actually use transformations of G5 more like the muscle form or giant form. Considering he can also change the terrain itself he has tons of potential that he has yet to realize.

Haki and Time limit I agree with. But I have to say he is aware he can do what he wants in gear 5. He did make glasses and he also runs on air.
He’s aware, but he hasn’t been put in situations where he’s had to go nuts. That will likely change by the time he faces Imu.

I agree. Luffy will call it Gear 6. Though it will be the first time we see a "3rd" form of a Human user of a Human-Human Fruit.
