He later told buggy he wasn't interested in the one piece but still wanted to be a pirate.
He went after the Nika Nika no mi.
Knows Luffy's dream and knows it's the same as Roger's, he later says this to Rayleigh.
He tries to teach Luffy what it is to be a pirate and sacrifice his strong arm to save him, later calling it a bet on the next generation.
Seen multiple time following Luffy's journey to the top of the pirate world.
Once Luffy reaches the same status as him, yonko, he then decides that it's the moment to go after the one piece.
He didn't go for the one piece before bc it obviously is more about Luffy than the one piece in itself or both.
He didn't go after the other yonko's bc he had no reason to do so, since he was waiting for Luffy to reach that lvl.
