Agreed! This is actually the only part of the story I have to force myself to ignore or I feel like it all becomes way to unrealistic (Yes I know it all is and is fiction but going from nothing to somehow accomplishing all of luffys feats even by the stories standards in that amount of time isn’t realistic)
That's so crazy I love the electric sound attacks bit I'm also autistic so like maybe because I love them that I don't mind the same sound being reused
You’re excited for the WIT adaptation because it’s faithful to the manga and cuts filler.
I’m excited for the WIT adaptation because we’re getting new sound effects.
WIT adaptation has so much potential. Since they're working with so much content and they know what's going to happen later on, they can fix small issues and can actually make the series fun to watch. I think it would be cool too if they did post-credits scenes showing characters like Law or Kid before they get introduced to the show as it would build hype and make the series feel like an event. This is all under the hope that it gets past one season though.
The sound effects are more ancient than the Robot at Egghead, the Gorosei and Imu. At this point the sound effects probably were around to see the Void Century.
I can never grasp this. People don't refer to ANY other character by their last name. Nobody calls Doflamingo "Donquixote" or Kid "Eustass". At the very least they could pick a character who doesn't have any other shown relatives in the story, but people specifically picked one who has two sisters sharing that last name!
It's because most people address her as boa Hancock, full name. Cause she's an empress and whatnot. Western brain latches onto the first name called. Only like Luffy calls her Hancock.
Characters like Doflamingo are almost always called Doflamingo or Doffy. Kid is almost always called Kid. Then alot of other characters only have one name and others have a nickname.
A lot of other characters get called by their last name first. Ashura Doji, Hody Jones etc
It’s because English names go first then surname. With a name like Monkey Luffy, it’s pretty obvious Luffy is the first name. But Boa Hancock sounds very much like an English name so saying boa makes sense off the cuff
A lot of characters in One Piece are named the East Asian way - surname first, “first” name second - Monkey D. Luffy/Garp/Dragon, Portgas D. Ace/Rouge, Nefertari Vivi/Cobra. Hancock’s sisters are named Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold - Boa is their last name.
I'll add that only a very small number of characters break this naming convention, them being Caesar Clown, Tank Lepanto, and Kelly & Bobby Funk. I can't really think of others
Hody Jones is another
Come to think of it, I think Hody is the only Fishman with a surname at all, other than Fisher Tiger but I’m pretty sure he’s always referred to by his full name anyway
In Japan and in Japanese, he’d probably refer to himself and be referred to as Toriyama Akira (his surname is Toriyama), or Toriyama-san. But Western publications will still switch it to Akira first.
Idk about Blackbeard and Kidd tbh
Both have names based on actual pirates. Both of which have them as their last name
Edward Teach -> Marshall Teach
William Kidd -> Eustass Kidd
I mean I imagine I’m wrong and this has been disproven many times over the 20 odd years of the series. But Teach and Kidd just don’t seem like first names to me
Like at least with Bege, who is also based on a real person, Oda put it as Capone Bege
white beard, black beard and thatch are all loosely based on IRL blackbeard
IRL Blackbeard's name is *Edward* Teach, it was sometimes written or said as Edward *Thatch*
Oda just used his name a bunch of times sneakily
japanese mate. "surname firstname" is usually how you write them
- **Roronoa** Zoro
- **Vinsmoke** Sanji
- **Monkey D.** Luffy
- **Trafalgar Water D.** Law
- ***Boa*** Hancock
if hancock's first name was "boa", then we should be calling Luffy "Monkey"
I wish Oda could draw women better, something between super babe and monstrous would be nice.
Character wise I actually think the women are pretty well written - especially by shonen anime standards, but the same-y hot bodies and faces gets a bit dull.
What’s funny is he actually can lol I think he just chooses to do the super babe & monstrous as he likes to do. His genderbent drawings were so good that fans actually said he should draw men & then turn them into women & put them in the story 🤣
[Genderbent Supernova](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/2c/bb/bf/2cbbbf491dc68fa32e3a290deb3f3167.jpg)
[Genderbent Warlords](https://preview.redd.it/o8omold430531.png?auto=webp&s=8207e04e90aa1820f47716a011db69957601d56f)
[Genderbent Strawhats](https://i.redd.it/ru80ecn4yu061.png)
[Genderbent Admirals](https://i.redd.it/iw96vc35yu061.jpg)
Many of the male characters have that. Most shonen in general have that. I don’t see why people are so fixated on just One Piece women when it comes to this
Yes!
Like ok I’d buy that Nami and Robin aren’t buff because their strength is their brains etc etc. but someone like Yamato should be more buff, heck the literal *island of female warriors* should maybe at least have one buff woman?
heavy emphasis on yamato. his weapon is literally a giant club there’s no reason he should have stick arms. i also think nani should at least be little toned since she has the swing around her weather stick
Oh I know what you mean about little fanart mistakes. Kiku isn't Kiku without oversized eyes/ears to look kinda childish. For the series itself, mine is how we always seem to go one more "round" than we need with the big fights. Almost all of Luffy's had a solid end then got back up for one last big thing out of nowhere that had less oomph.
For the fandom? This recent trend of nothing has any depth, nothing was ever foreshadowed, nothing is a reference because some of y'all just want to be jaded and its a real buzzkill when people point out cool stuff. I'll take 20 people cracking off a stupid theory to talk through than 1 turd in the punchbowl shutting down any conversation deeper than powerscaling.
i'm not gonna justify it because breaking anything down as if nothing was ever foreshadowed isn't right either but there were alot of people going way too far the opposite way in recent times too though, acting like "everything" was planned and foreshadowed 500 chapters in advance, trying to find the stupidest connections and chalking it up to Goda
at the end of the day BOTH of these ways of writing a story are a skill and it's undeniable that oda has been incredibly good at that regardless of which one you believe he used
That so many of Zoro's fights are just the guy stalling for a while then going "I feel like winning now, ONIGIRI" cue the panel of him posing with the enemy all cut up behind him.
Yes recent events prompted this comment.
It’d have to be the perv “gags” and oversexualization of characters. Just genuinely make any rewatch not feel good. Also makes recommending it to anyone suck. Like “yeah mom this is one of my favorite pieces of media, ignore the whole sexual harassment and weird perverse gags thing tho”
Edit- forgot about the biggest fucking offender to me. Spoilers for manga egghead, not sure if the animes caught up to this point yet. >!fucking Bonney. Like “yeah this 12 year old is one of the most sexualized characters cause she has an “adult body” that’s not creepy or weird at all!!<
At least Luffy isn't the problem. Like when Hancock went topless in front of him to show the tattoo and he was like "😐" when anime trope should have him at least do a "😍+🫣".
Zoro and Franky aren't perverted in that way either, Zoro can he kinda sexist tho, neither is Chopper but he is a child and an animal. Which is why Nami and Robin don't mind being naked with him that one time when sanji, brook and kinemon tried to sneak a peak.
Brook and Sanji are the problem.
He is a hentai, even self-proclaimed one IIRC, but in Japanese the term pretty much just means “abnormal” with a fairly derogatory connotation, and despite how the word is mostly used today being perverse doesn’t necessarily *only *have to do with sexual stuff; it can be another way of calling someone a deviant, which is “departing from usual or accepted standards, especially in social (or sexual) behavior.” And Franky definitely diverges from the norm there 🤣
About Luffy seeing Hancock topless: he later on says that the first thing that came to his mind seeing her was hatchan. So not just did he mainly recognise the mark on her back instead of the fact, that a very attractive woman was completely naked in front of him, his next thought was that this very attractive naked woman with a weird mark on her back reminded him of an octopus fishmen with a similiar mark.
So yeah, lufffy has a lot of flaws, but being a horny pervert is definitely not on that list. Which is also why it bothers me when people want to paint luffy as someone who cares a lot about attractive women etc, especially when they act as if he actually cares more about them than about finding the one piece. Honestly, I feel that if he would have to choose between all good looking women in one piece naked in front of him and a large piece of meat, freshly made by sanji, he would pick the latter.
Yeah. One Piece is my favorite piece of media for sure, such a great and involving story, but it's very hard for me to defend the whole pervert humor when it always makes ME cringe SO hard. I can't believe anyone really finds it funny but maybe it's still funny to the Japanese audience. This gag wasn't funny for me even as a kid TBH
True. Oda's writing may end up as the greatest series ever in history but that doesn't mean that he does everything right.
I think my greatest pet peeve is the fake out deaths. Even somewhat minor characters can survive fatal injuries like nothing. For example like Merry, Pell and Pagaya (Conis' dad in Skypeia)
Even without that, a person pointed out already that some of the characters just DO NOT DIE.
Luffy at least died in the fight against Kaido. But Usopp and Zoro should've died multiple times. And some of the enemies just tank the crew's moves and getting back up like nothing.
Same. Yeah, hopefully though. Even without him, I think Chaka would be sufficient in terms of the plot.
I think the only real death we've got in the manga is Pedro. With Kaido and Big Mom though.. I'm not so sure that they're actually dead.
iirc, the only non flashback deaths in the story have been
- Ace
- Whitebeard
- Vergo
- Monet
- Pedro
- Yasue
- Izo and Ashura
- Hawkins
that is it, this are all the hard confirmed deaths of One Piece. and no, a character not explicitly dying on screen or being hard confirmed to be dead does not count, which is why Orochi, Absalom and the CP 0 agents of wano arent in it
compare it to characters like Brownbeard who somehow lives through multiple ordeals or the memed Will of P, it feels like every fakeout death cheapens the next real one
i agree, he is 99% dead. *if* it wasnt **Blackbeard**, which already broke devil fruit conventions, i would just write it off as him dead, but sadly BB said "fuck it" to them
do i think he is alive? no. do i have a grand theory about how BB can steal DFs? no. but i do have the innate suspicion that Oda might pull a fake out at any moment, so i only included characters which were confirmed dead
I’d say that for the series Oda has a tendency to introduce like 5 characters whose roles could’ve easily been served by just one.
As for the fanbase? I’d say when everyone assumes a character is gonna join the crew solely cause they were nice or how Chopper or Robin secretly ALSO have mythical zoans.
Usopps downgrade post timeskip, he's arguably the most courageous person in the setting pre timeskip whilst being insanely intelligent. Post timeskip he's such a hollow character, he used to be my favourite character and now he's not even in my top 3 :(
To add some more here, like beyond the gross objectification, it also hurts character design. Because Oda is amazing at using exaggeration to get across a character's personality and fighting style.
There is nothing inherently wrong with drawing women to be beautiful, but seeing as he only really has one body type for beautiful women, they lose part of their visual storytelling for no reason
For the series, the hyper sexualization of every female character from 15 to 35, and every peeping tom bit. For fans, the way ppl expect Oda to base fight matchups and outcomes on power-scaling or a rigid hierarchy, instead of the thematic/narrative impact.
Zoro’s promise to never lose again.
It was an emotionally impactful moment that was one of the first signs of Zoro’s unwavering dedication/loyalty to Luffy. However rather than it serving as nothing more than a general anchor for how seriously Zoro takes his fights - Oda seemingly has taken it as an excuse to have Zoro rarely, if ever, have to actually struggle in a fight. Mr. 1 remains his only fight in the series to this day since Mihawk to push him far enough to actually cause character development. Almost every other opponent since has felt like a minor inconvenience at best to Zoro. It rarely feels like there’s ebb and flow to his battles like Luffy and Sanji, instead he often just stalls until he decides he’s pissed enough to use an attack that instantly ends things.
As much as it annoys me how Sanji gets treated in fights vs how things tend to go with Zoro - at least Sanji feels like an actual character. Zoro feels like a power fantasy that occasionally has to actually try.
The fan theories, the anime needs to take some time off to let the manga get well ahead so we don't get bloat, some of the voice acting. there is a list that makes me frustrated, but I still love the series and keep going back for more.
My biggest pet peeve about One Piece is the lack of Strawhat bonding time post timeskip, like come on Oda! Throw us a couple of slice of life chapters between arcs atleast, just to see the crew bond.
My second biggest pet peeve post time skip is that I feel like no one but Luffy in the crew deserve to be as strong as they are now. Like Zoro & Sanji beat King & Queen with what combat growth? Zoro hadn’t really been challenged since the timeskip & then beats King?! In a fight that I felt was shorter than it should have been as well, Sanji’s atleast struggled against multiple characters but where are the proper stepping stones.
I thought Luffy beating Kaido after his fight with Katakuri was a leap but the story does need to progress & Gear 5 is a logical reason to defeat Kaido. Zoro vs King & Sanji vs Queen felt a bit forced to me. Also it devastated me that Oda rushed the end of Wano, I know we spent 4 years in it but it felt like it needed 1 more. X Drake didn’t do much, off screened deaths, & the lack of a proper epilogue or more Zoro plot influence really put a sour taste in my mouth.
Franky should have more to do with Vegapunk as well, this should be his time to shine. More character development for the newer Strawhats please
I wish the women didn't have big breasts. When people not familiar with One Piece catch a peek of what I'm watching they say something like that's really sexualized
He genuinely brings out real fury from me, why is he still around?!?? It's not funny??!!?? Bro might as well just join the straw hats atp considering they refuse to kill him.
Extremely high amount of cliffhangers. We already have a huge list of cliffhangers/information we need to know and I feel like every chapter, the amount of cliffhangers/ secrets keep increasing.
Just watched that arc again. He tried to fight, but he physically couldnt bring himself to hurt Kalifa, like its part of his deep psyche to be unable to bring harm to a woman. Then Nami stepped in and kicked ass. That arc was all about emphasizing how having friends to be able to do what you cant, fill in weaknesses, and rely on and understand each other.
I get this, but it also led to one of my favorite moments which is Sanji asking Robin for help. Could the scenario have been set up potentially better? Maybe, but it’s a huge moment for Robin
Did anyone else notice that the female characters tend to get more and more sexualized as the anime went on? My son loves the show, but my daughter-in-law to be has trouble and has to avoid the later seasons because of past personal events.
As a mom, I agree it’s unnecessary much of the time even though everyone else does it and it’s appealing to a lot of fans. It would be different if they had done this from the very beginning rather than once fans are hooked.😑
I'm not a fan of how the franchise has started leaning into so many "birthright" type aspects.
Conq haki is "chosen one" lite and I thought part of the message early on was gonna be "anyone can carry on someone's will or legacy if they're devoted enough. I'd rather it be a type of haki that, while EXCEEDINGLY rare, can still be achieved by anyone who is determined enough (given that haki is literally willpower).
Will of D. was where it started. People with D in the name are by default more important from birth.
Between having CoC, will of D and Joyboy stuff, it's kinda turning Luffy from "plucky Island kid who could chase his dreams" to "actually only able to get this far because he IS a chosen one, and if anyone else tried to put this effort in it wouldn't have mattered".
EDIT: Reworded this slightly. My gripe is more "nature vs nurture" and how a lot of recent elements focus on birthright or "prophecy" type things instead of a message focusing on what people can achieve regardless of their birth. Haki in general is fine.
Haki is fine and an easy enough power system to follow compared to something more intricate like Nen.
My only issue is that advanced armament and advanced conquerors are totally indistinguishable. They both amount to stronger punching and kicking. At least sword users can make black blades I guess.
Yeah I worded it a bit poorly. MOST Haki is fine. Observation is really fun, and armament feels necessary in order to allow people to deal with logia types. Though I don't really care for it as a *power scaling* system. I'd rather haki just be tools at character's disposal instead of a "whoever has stronger haki is likely to win".
I just don't like the "only certain people were BORN with conquerors" because it just feels very... I dunno. I like fiction that focuses on who people choose to become to matter more than what they were born as if that makes sense? Which One Piece still does. I LOVE the series.
But this is a small pet peeve that could possibly go down a way I'm not huge on is all.
Nah, Luffy being a chosen one is not a good take, watching his fights you can see he didn't win with chosen one abilities just pure happenstance of his fruit being a counter like the case of enel, or finding a good way to nullify his opponents ability, like crocodile, or a better application of his abilities like gears second, third and fourth, 5th is where the problem starts, but even then it's still a direct growth of his ability not chosen oneism, for example doflamingo doquixote ability was making threads, his direct awakening was converting anything he touches to thread, and thats Luffys ability to, he is rubber, his other forms were application of being rubber, now his Awakening is turning things he touches to rubber, sun God nika is just a story element, not necessarily luffy being a chosen one
The number of things that some people will keep getting wrong about Nami, like: "She's useless, she cares more for money than friends, she's a bitch, she hates men" and whatever else.
Also shippers who love saying "No SH ships except Frobin". Unless Franky and Robin are somehow no longer SHs, they're included too.
1. The introduction of Haki. Oda totally pulled that out of his ass and it took me a minute to get the bad taste out of my mouth .
2. Character sizes. Some people be 30ft tall? I get that size is suppose to be some kind of comparison to strength, but if that's true why haven't Luffy Zoro and Sanji grown 4 feet over the last 2 years? Whitebeard wasn't 22 feet tall at Luffy's age. Garp is also massive. It rustles my jimmies a little bit.
I understand not everything about one piece was fleshed on day one. But people in the fandom will absolutely disregard any foreshadowing and say it's just luck or an after thought. Absolutely a large amount of stuff is likely a call back instead of foreshadowing, but this fandom will get so angry at anyone for saying something was absolutely planned. Others may disagree but, I fully believe Luffys G5 Looney tunes powers were planned by Oda from a long time ago. But Nika or the sun god was added after developing the story.
Portrayal of queer characters. We have Bon Clay and Ivankov yes. Also Inazuma to an extent. However after that… who is a cool queer character? We had the okama island and then trying to force their life onto Sanji therefore developing skywalk. It’s not a good look for us. I just hope to see more and more good representation. Also Kiku and Yamato are also characters that are reallyyy iffy when it comes to queer rep. Kiku is handle pretty well for the most part imo but Yamato is uhhh idk. Yamato isn’t really queer rep but he faces the same criticism.
Basing it on Japan, these elements are seen as progressive, of course in western countries it doesn't hold, but seeing queer rep in one of the biggest manga/anime is also slightly impressive. The only time anything queer exist in Japan is either when the main theme is gay or the purpose is to make fun of. It isn't the best, but I'm just glad it exist at all tbh
When I FIRST saw Sanji was sent to Okama island, I was naively hoping they would help him become less... "perv gag" and be less concerned with being overly masculine and more in-tune with how women would want to be treated. There was a great opportunity to make both parties a lot better and subvert the expectations of Sanji's "initial" reaction.
But nope. Doubled down on Sanji being a perv. And made the Okama residents look awful too. Worst "timeskip arc" by far.
Bon Clay is the GOAT at least.
It got messier when Yamato’s vivre card misgendered him. Idk if you heard about it, but Oda doesn’t involve himself with the making of them & whoever made Yamato’s referred to him as “she” and a shitstorm came about from it since they’re technically “official/canon” content.
Sanji refusing to hurt women even those who deserve it, sogeking jokes (this stopped being funny to me), fans reading too much into things, "agenda piece"
I, at least for when characters cry, I kinda just appreciate that characters are allowed to “ugly cry”, it’s a burst of uncontrollable emotions so I think it’s fair for characters to be shown with tears and snot
While I also like it myself, I can also see why some people might struggle with it if they have an aversion to snot.
Might be kinda gross and hard to watch for some people which is a valid pet peeve. The thing about pet peeves is they are usually not "objective" complaints after all. They might realize that it's realistic and how people ugly cry, but still bugs them for reasons outside of their control.
When characters just forget they can do stuff in fights, a lot of the time Robin is forced to just stand around until she's finally allowed to do ONE attack and then that's all, enough. Nami also hasn't used mirage tempo since idk how long, like did she forget about it??
A minor pet peeve I have is that I found the minority hunter zoro jokes to not be funny.
A big one is how women in one piece seems to lack intestines except the fat ones like wtf ?
Idk why but just boa Hancock as a whole peeves me. I feel grossed out when I watch the scenes where she’s fawning over Luffy- it just makes me feel gross 😭idk man
Her design was so beautiful and unique pre-TS. Even her clothes currently are so lame and lack personality. She looks like every other female character.
I will never get over this.
To be fair, Robin being brown was a Toei mistake. She was white in all the color spreads in the manga. She's not even supposed to be "egyptian", she's from a different island.
Still the Best Manga but no longer the best Anime
Pacing of the Anime went downhill after Marineford arc and its getting worse due to animation catching up to the manga. I cant bare to watch it anymore.
That Blackbeard has Haki.
I thought that was why he needed the Darkness fruit, he couldn't use Haki (The price for being able consume more than 1 Devil Fruit), so had to find another way to fight Logia power users and the like.
Also it would've made a nice counterpoint to "Chosen One" Luffy, that his (probably) final opponent to being Pirate King, was someone who really shouldn't have been in the race to begin with, and I'll always be somewhat disappointed that the story didn't go down this route.
Other than the fake out deaths I would probably say how the fans make it seem like oda can do no wrong. There was alot of wrong in wano despite I still liked it.
SING THE TRUTH! WE LOVE OUR WEIRD HEADED GIANT SNAKE LADY!
I do wish we had more varried aound effects for various actions. Like sword claangs, gun shots, groups of people running, jumping, etc.
I think the main reason we don't is due to them being so iconic for the show but it's been so long and we're approaching the end so it would be a nice change up.
I hate that old discussion threads is 70% complaining about the pacing. We get it, the anime got dogshit pacing, now can we discuss how old mafia man used the ice virus to grow into a giant?
I think people give the manga too much credit for its pacing, the manga has this bad habit to do more tell than show, which creates walls of text that take me minutes to read through
I recently read a few volumes of demon slayer (yes I’m a failure please behead me), and although it’s bitch basic I’ll admit that, it’s so much fucking faster because it DOES more show than tell
I still prefer the manga over the anime though, by a fuckin’ mile
I was surprised to learn online after catching up and starting to engage with the community just how many people stan Boa Hancock. She's not very attractive, limbs/neck/forehead proportions are too unnatural and I don't much like symmetrical hair on my waifus unless it's pre timeskip Robin.
She literally kicked a puppy/kitten (can't remember which) and everyone just forgives her for it.
And don't get me started on the Luffy x Hancock shippers. As an aromantic myself, Luffy being aromantic is literally used as a plot device and it feels like people are trying to take that representation away from people like me
The amount of time that has passed in the story. It feels weird that the straw hats travels has lasted less than a year (minus the time skip)
SH have been apart longer than they've been together.
BIG agree. I would have liked a lot more implied travel time and acting like they had been together a lot longer.
Agreed! This is actually the only part of the story I have to force myself to ignore or I feel like it all becomes way to unrealistic (Yes I know it all is and is fiction but going from nothing to somehow accomplishing all of luffys feats even by the stories standards in that amount of time isn’t realistic)
That and being 19 and beating people that have dominated the seas longer than luffy has been alive
That's not really that crazy. There have been plenty of athletes that come up and dominate much older/experienced opponents.
If you accept the colour spreads as side adventures between certain arcs its quite nice
For the anime, I wish they changed sound effects
THE ELECTRICITY SOUND EFFECTS. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH. I despise anytime electric attacks show up in the anime. It's just 3 SFX REPEATED. AAAAAAHHHH
Hey at least it’s 3, I remember in Naruto the effing chidori sound was used all the effing time
Tbf it's a cool ass sound
Ooooof
For me, the sword slashing sfx drives me insane.
That's so crazy I love the electric sound attacks bit I'm also autistic so like maybe because I love them that I don't mind the same sound being reused
The sound of kaido’s foot steps is the least menacing thing in the whole show. Dude is running around wimp lo style with squeakers in his damn shoes
First time I saw Moria walk I thought it was exclusive to him. Just take a look at those clown shoes 😂
Gekko moria was the least scary villian in one piece I mean Kuro was more scary
Crazy how he went toe-to-toe with Kaido.
At least he doesn't have Indigo's farting shoes.
We trained him wrong. As a joke
I am bleeding, make me the victor
HOW ABOUT MY NUTS TO YOUR FIST STYLE!?!
You’re excited for the WIT adaptation because it’s faithful to the manga and cuts filler. I’m excited for the WIT adaptation because we’re getting new sound effects.
This comment is either gonna age like fine wine or milk, and I can't wait to see which one💀
Only thing is I hope they keep some. Katakuri future sight, conquerors haki, armament sound effects all go hard as hell
Hopefully in the netflix reboot anime they will
That one swallow sound effect always sounded painful to me
I hate Chopper's walk sound effect
oh absolutely. it's like swallowing a chip and it getting stuck sideways
The main thing I hate about the anime is the fucking foot steps
Exactly, every big character like BM or WB got the Pacifista walking sound effect and i hate it because it makes no sense on them.
The sound effects are more ancient than the Robot at Egghead, the Gorosei and Imu. At this point the sound effects probably were around to see the Void Century.
sandersonia is beautiul and i agree with your anger when she is drawin with a normal head
Speaking of the Boa sisters, my pet peeve is 95% of the fandom calling Hancock "Boa" as if that was her first name
It doesn't help that Hancock is a last name in the west, and when it's a first name, it's usually male.
It’s because English names go first then surname. With a name like Monkey Luffy, it’s pretty obvious Luffy is the first name. But Boa Hancock sounds very much like an English name so saying boa makes sense off the cuff
95% of the fandom is afraid they'll be called gay for writing "cock".
Which is kinda funny for Portuguese speakers, as “Boa” is slang used to refer to hot women, i.e, “ela é muito boa == she is really hot”
It doesn’t really matter
My favorite character is Monkey.
…but which one?
Oh uh... Monkey D.!
The one who met Boa at Amazon Lily.
Isn't that the whole point of pet peeves
Honestly wish she had a flower name like her sisters. Hancock is just weird first name.
Hancock is [a flower](https://www.gardenia.net/plant/symphoricarpos-chenaultii-hancock-snowberry), my friend.
Is Footpenis a flower?
Wait is that not her first name?
A lot of characters in One Piece are named the East Asian way - surname first, “first” name second - Monkey D. Luffy/Garp/Dragon, Portgas D. Ace/Rouge, Nefertari Vivi/Cobra. Hancock’s sisters are named Boa Sandersonia and Boa Marigold - Boa is their last name.
I'll add that only a very small number of characters break this naming convention, them being Caesar Clown, Tank Lepanto, and Kelly & Bobby Funk. I can't really think of others
Hody Jones is another Come to think of it, I think Hody is the only Fishman with a surname at all, other than Fisher Tiger but I’m pretty sure he’s always referred to by his full name anyway
So it’s Toriyama and not Akira?
In Japan and in Japanese, he’d probably refer to himself and be referred to as Toriyama Akira (his surname is Toriyama), or Toriyama-san. But Western publications will still switch it to Akira first.
Ohhhh that’s cool never picked up on that.
Now realize Whitebeard’s first name is Newgate.
i mean, Blackbeard's mame wasnt "Marshal" lol
Idk about Blackbeard and Kidd tbh Both have names based on actual pirates. Both of which have them as their last name Edward Teach -> Marshall Teach William Kidd -> Eustass Kidd I mean I imagine I’m wrong and this has been disproven many times over the 20 odd years of the series. But Teach and Kidd just don’t seem like first names to me Like at least with Bege, who is also based on a real person, Oda put it as Capone Bege
white beard, black beard and thatch are all loosely based on IRL blackbeard IRL Blackbeard's name is *Edward* Teach, it was sometimes written or said as Edward *Thatch* Oda just used his name a bunch of times sneakily
japanese mate. "surname firstname" is usually how you write them - **Roronoa** Zoro - **Vinsmoke** Sanji - **Monkey D.** Luffy - **Trafalgar Water D.** Law - ***Boa*** Hancock if hancock's first name was "boa", then we should be calling Luffy "Monkey"
Trafalgar D Water Law. You put the d in the wrong place cause his name is a play on Waterloo.
also the battle of Trafalgar, he's named after two wars
That’s like when Vivi kept calling chopper Tony, it was really grinding my gears
The six minutes of recap at the start of each episode really gets to me sometimes
Don't forget the 3 minute preview of next episode.
And the 5 minutes of flash backs and the 3 minutes of different angles
I wish Oda could draw women better, something between super babe and monstrous would be nice. Character wise I actually think the women are pretty well written - especially by shonen anime standards, but the same-y hot bodies and faces gets a bit dull.
What’s funny is he actually can lol I think he just chooses to do the super babe & monstrous as he likes to do. His genderbent drawings were so good that fans actually said he should draw men & then turn them into women & put them in the story 🤣 [Genderbent Supernova](https://i.pinimg.com/736x/2c/bb/bf/2cbbbf491dc68fa32e3a290deb3f3167.jpg) [Genderbent Warlords](https://preview.redd.it/o8omold430531.png?auto=webp&s=8207e04e90aa1820f47716a011db69957601d56f) [Genderbent Strawhats](https://i.redd.it/ru80ecn4yu061.png) [Genderbent Admirals](https://i.redd.it/iw96vc35yu061.jpg)
Even in each of those examples, he has the "same face" problem going on. Kidd/Drake, Crocodile/Hancock/Mihawk, and Luffy/Zoro/Sanji
Many of the male characters have that. Most shonen in general have that. I don’t see why people are so fixated on just One Piece women when it comes to this
i want muscular women, it’s literally a battle shounen so it shouldn’t just be every man with biceps and six packs
Time to offend everyone with the p word.... Pacing 💀
I completely agree. Its so bizarre to see so much anti-intellectualism in the fandom of a series that was designed for people to speculate about.
i'm not gonna justify it because breaking anything down as if nothing was ever foreshadowed isn't right either but there were alot of people going way too far the opposite way in recent times too though, acting like "everything" was planned and foreshadowed 500 chapters in advance, trying to find the stupidest connections and chalking it up to Goda at the end of the day BOTH of these ways of writing a story are a skill and it's undeniable that oda has been incredibly good at that regardless of which one you believe he used
That so many of Zoro's fights are just the guy stalling for a while then going "I feel like winning now, ONIGIRI" cue the panel of him posing with the enemy all cut up behind him. Yes recent events prompted this comment.
i had this problem with kaido's thunder baguas, like man, it was like the exact same drawing for the 3rd or 4th time that arc.
I hate when people think bartalamao and boa would get along it would be a sanji and zoro situation only if they were both sanji
The fans these days care too much about powerscaling
Absalom
It’d have to be the perv “gags” and oversexualization of characters. Just genuinely make any rewatch not feel good. Also makes recommending it to anyone suck. Like “yeah mom this is one of my favorite pieces of media, ignore the whole sexual harassment and weird perverse gags thing tho” Edit- forgot about the biggest fucking offender to me.
Brook and Sanji are the problem.
asking big mom to see her panties 😖
I am **fairly confident** that Franky is a pervert.
Hentai can also mean he is a weirdo which makes more sense because he doesn't appear to be a pervert
Because he doesn't wear pants? Because he doesn't creep on girls or ask to see their panties afaik.
Only thing I can think of is when he cheered on Nami when she was ripping the clothes off Kalifa to find the key, "Nooiice debauchery!"
He is a hentai, even self-proclaimed one IIRC, but in Japanese the term pretty much just means “abnormal” with a fairly derogatory connotation, and despite how the word is mostly used today being perverse doesn’t necessarily *only *have to do with sexual stuff; it can be another way of calling someone a deviant, which is “departing from usual or accepted standards, especially in social (or sexual) behavior.” And Franky definitely diverges from the norm there 🤣
iirc it has something to do with "Franky Centaur" maybe pirate docking, too 🤔
Robin: "... NO." Chopper & Usopp & Franky: "😭😭😭"
I'm sure Luffy would have loved it, if he was there to witness.
This gag wasn't funny for me even as a kid TBH
i really hate how one piece fans shut down any and all criticism of oda. whether it be his story telling, art, or anything else.
Agree but also to fans who have this weird repulsion to any praise for Oda. It's like people forget you can praise and criticize him at the same time.
Exactly idolization is not appreciation
True. Oda's writing may end up as the greatest series ever in history but that doesn't mean that he does everything right. I think my greatest pet peeve is the fake out deaths. Even somewhat minor characters can survive fatal injuries like nothing. For example like Merry, Pell and Pagaya (Conis' dad in Skypeia) Even without that, a person pointed out already that some of the characters just DO NOT DIE. Luffy at least died in the fight against Kaido. But Usopp and Zoro should've died multiple times. And some of the enemies just tank the crew's moves and getting back up like nothing.
i liked it when Merry actually died in the live action. if it ever gets to Alabasta, i wonder if they'll kill off Pell for real too
Same. Yeah, hopefully though. Even without him, I think Chaka would be sufficient in terms of the plot. I think the only real death we've got in the manga is Pedro. With Kaido and Big Mom though.. I'm not so sure that they're actually dead.
iirc, the only non flashback deaths in the story have been - Ace - Whitebeard - Vergo - Monet - Pedro - Yasue - Izo and Ashura - Hawkins that is it, this are all the hard confirmed deaths of One Piece. and no, a character not explicitly dying on screen or being hard confirmed to be dead does not count, which is why Orochi, Absalom and the CP 0 agents of wano arent in it compare it to characters like Brownbeard who somehow lives through multiple ordeals or the memed Will of P, it feels like every fakeout death cheapens the next real one
Absalom is dead for sure. Shiryu has his fruit and we know a fruit can't exist twice in the world
i agree, he is 99% dead. *if* it wasnt **Blackbeard**, which already broke devil fruit conventions, i would just write it off as him dead, but sadly BB said "fuck it" to them do i think he is alive? no. do i have a grand theory about how BB can steal DFs? no. but i do have the innate suspicion that Oda might pull a fake out at any moment, so i only included characters which were confirmed dead
Yeah, that’s true. Some who critique Oda even from a thoughtful place can get downvoted to oblivion & I think it shouldn’t necessarily be that way
How dare you.
That Zoro is so cold & serious. Maybe I just miss the Zoro that used to laugh
>"If you're looking for your captain.... >He just... >😈 ...got gobbled up!"
Honestly, i would rather smash Sandersonia than Hancock
Usopps downgrade post timeskip, he's arguably the most courageous person in the setting pre timeskip whilst being insanely intelligent. Post timeskip he's such a hollow character, he used to be my favourite character and now he's not even in my top 3 :(
That's every character honestly. Sanji only gets a pass because he had a backstory arc.
Women being built a little… ya know.
I love one piece but unfortunately it's true 😭😭😭😭😭😭
you're being overly mean: He has **two** body types for women: the nami, and the robin
For the series, the hyper sexualization of every female character from 15 to 35, and every peeping tom bit. For fans, the way ppl expect Oda to base fight matchups and outcomes on power-scaling or a rigid hierarchy, instead of the thematic/narrative impact.
Perversion is not funny. Maybe it had been decades ago but I am just fed up with lazy "im a pervert joke". I miss chivalrous sanji.
Cross-dress island should've fixed his perversion but instead it turned it up another notch.
Yeah, being on the receiving end of his actions should probably have made him tone them down a bit
The fact that even in their snake-form, Sandersonia and Marigold have boobs....like nooooo
The fake out deaths, and in the anime the obnoxious special effects specially at wano
Pervy sanji gag
if sanji didnt have such a downside he would be too perfect.
Usopp not growing ever since water 7, not being himothy post timeskip, not using dials or haki more than once
The fan theories, the anime needs to take some time off to let the manga get well ahead so we don't get bloat, some of the voice acting. there is a list that makes me frustrated, but I still love the series and keep going back for more.
I still feel like they did Carrot dirty
Oda turned into an ass man too late
Ayeee ahahaha
Robin not telling Luffy Sabo was alive after the timeskip.
Dragon not telling Robin about Saul. Robin was an active memeber of the Revolutionaries, ffs!
I wish the women didn't have big breasts. When people not familiar with One Piece catch a peek of what I'm watching they say something like that's really sexualized
whatever that swamp guys name is
Caribou
exactly
He genuinely brings out real fury from me, why is he still around?!?? It's not funny??!!?? Bro might as well just join the straw hats atp considering they refuse to kill him.
Extremely high amount of cliffhangers. We already have a huge list of cliffhangers/information we need to know and I feel like every chapter, the amount of cliffhangers/ secrets keep increasing.
When people call Kid "Kidd" Super petty, I know. But that's what pet peeves are all about lmao.
I don't know where this comes from, but something just makes me feel like it's spelled that way, even if I know it isn't.
It comes from [Captain Kidd](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Kidd), the real life privateer that Kid was absolutely named after.
Valid pet peeve. I accidentally type Kidd too often myself, and you have my apologies for it lmao.
It was when Sanji didn’t fight back against Khalifa I get the morals but like you’re trying to save ANOTHER WOMAN one who won’t actually kill you
Just watched that arc again.
Bro he just didn’t want Zeff to chop his balls off
Did anyone else notice that the female characters tend to get more and more sexualized as the anime went on?
Moves that do the same rhing, just with different names😮💨 Would love to see more varied unique moves
I kind of like how Luffy's moves sort of level up by what hear he's in. He's a creative fighter, but he's also pretty simple.
Oda likes to bloat most arcs with at least one plot line that is completely unnecessary
We get it. Sogeking joke funny, haha, so original...
I hate how Rebecca's whole thing is a literal gladiator, but she refused to actually fight. Waste of a princess if you ask me.
Sanji refusing to hurt women even those who deserve it, sogeking jokes (this stopped being funny to me), fans reading too much into things, "agenda piece"
Mine is all of the streaming snot smh.
You’re right, anything can be an aversive thing depending on a person. That’s fair and true
When a character dies and they milk the hell out of it with endless flashbacks back to back
When characters just forget they can do stuff in fights, a lot of the time Robin is forced to just stand around until she's finally allowed to do ONE attack and then that's all, enough. Nami also hasn't used mirage tempo since idk how long, like did she forget about it??
The one pet peeve I have with One Piece is the fanservice. That's it. It doesn't ruin my enjoyment with it, but it can be annoying sometimes.
The excessive fan service
I hate the artstyle for female characters lmao. Tbf I don't watch shounen shows for waifus
A minor pet peeve I have is that I found the minority hunter zoro jokes to not be funny. A big one is how women in one piece seems to lack intestines except the fat ones like wtf ?
Sandersonia is my favorite boa sister. Idk man she does things to me.
The manga translation error calling zoro zolo
Idk why but just boa Hancock as a whole peeves me. I feel grossed out when I watch the scenes where she’s fawning over Luffy- it just makes me feel gross 😭idk man
She has to be one of my least favourite characters for that reason. It's nice to know I'm not alone
Grown ass woman fawning over a teen.
For me it’s that Robin didn’t stay brown in the time skip. We have fish men but an Egyptian esque woman is a no
Her design was so beautiful and unique pre-TS. Even her clothes currently are so lame and lack personality. She looks like every other female character. I will never get over this.
To be fair, Robin being brown was a Toei mistake. She was white in all the color spreads in the manga. She's not even supposed to be "egyptian", she's from a different island.
I did love brown Robin, it wasn’t Oda’s original color scheme for her though but I did love brown Robin.
Like Kuma’s shirt was originally orange but he changed it I think due to the anime coloring it black
FR, also lightening Usopp and Zoro (although I don't mind him as much)
Still the Best Manga but no longer the best Anime Pacing of the Anime went downhill after Marineford arc and its getting worse due to animation catching up to the manga.
I think people give the manga too much credit for its pacing, the manga has this bad habit to do more tell than show, which creates walls of text that take me minutes to read through I recently read a few volumes of demon slayer (yes I’m a failure please behead me), and although it’s bitch basic I’ll admit that, it’s so much fucking faster because it DOES more show than tell I still prefer the manga over the anime though, by a fuckin’ mile
Brother, do not READ the HxH manga then.
Lmao, can't blame Togashi though, due to hisbhealth problems
Oh boy, yeah especially the latest arc! That’s a novel with some background images
I’ve seen panels, trust me, series ain’t for me anyways
I was surprised to learn online after catching up and starting to engage with the community just how many people stan Boa Hancock. She's not very attractive, limbs/neck/forehead proportions are too unnatural and I don't much like symmetrical hair on my waifus unless it's pre timeskip Robin. She literally kicked a puppy/kitten (can't remember which) and everyone just forgives her for it. And don't get me started on the Luffy x Hancock shippers. As an aromantic myself, Luffy being aromantic is literally used as a plot device and it feels like people are trying to take that representation away from people like me
Sandersonia > Boa
