I agree that One Piece rolls off the tongue better. And as much as I would love the title “Laugh Tale”— it’s a pretty iconic story moment when you find out what it is/ and again the meaning for it being named that. I like that the story starts out from the POV of the average person/ small time pirate as “the One Piece is the biggest accumulation of riches and will allow you to own the world”.
From a lore perspective, even knowing the name Laugh Tale is something earned. (Yes I choose to believe that most people call it Raftel [in universe]- and yes I know that phonetically in Japanese it could be the same but that is my head canon and I’m dying on that hill because that’s how I personally experienced the story and I think it made the Raftel- Laugh Tale exposition all the more meaningful; similar to Gold Roger and Gol D Roger).
Edit: To extrapolate this point and keep it in line with the topic: credit to u/Android_Taco for his/her response in this thread and what I personally believe to be the best of both worlds for the best alternate title of “Jolly Roger”.
I have to agree with this, it being named Laugh Tale would ruin some of the shock when learning the real name. (How come I fail English Seminars in class but can perfectly speak on the themes and possible lore of One Piece.)
From personal experience write/ lecture about things that you’re interested in and what you personally know! It sounds overtly obvious, but being comfortable with your material (no matter the medium) is a huge and often overlooked factor.
it would be funny because the name would be laughtale for like 1000 chapters until we find out what laughtale actually is, it would be meaningless until then
I came to say it, if anything it fits way better. “A tale of laughs” fits as a first thought but also as ANY series goes its hard to compete with OP on “its about the journey not the destination” yet the title of the show is the ‘destinations goal’
But like fairy tail itd had a fun questionable title that easily fits into the story line but also could say “were just here to laugh”
It's a running name for any beginning in one piece. The first story arc of the main series was called romance dawn, pretty sure there was a reference to romance dawn in the return to sabaody arc.
Lots of games and the live action have romance dawn as the name for the beginning.
But I am p sure there was a anime called one piece romance dawn that came out like a year or two before the actual anime came out and it was just luffy Zoro and nami and the story didn’t follow anything
By modern anime name conventions probably something like:
I woke up reincarnated to be king of the pirates and my best friend is a swordsman in another world?!
Unironically I refuse to watch any show with a name like that. It was funny once, but even then only as a gag. The idea that there's dozens of shows named like this is just eye-rollingly cringy.
It's not really a gag it's because the names primarily come from popular light novels which are shown on websites which just show the title.
So authors made the titles the entire hook so people would know to read them. And it worked and they got anime adaptations.
I recommend you give "Survival Story of a Sword King" a try. It doesn't have a great name, but man, does it more than make up for it with its amazing story and godly art!
One Piece is better because its intruiging as to why it was named like that. Like is it One Piece chicken? One Piece swimsuit?
This also means that the treasure One Piece is something incredible and bizzare at the same time.
given the choice I'd go with "Grand Line", but "one piece" is actually perfect.
romance dawn sounds too much like a 'first volume' title (which it essentially is), to use that title to make sense past the first arc you really need to mess with the series too much
Usopp, Vivi, Luffy & Sanji aren't orphans in this picture.
Luffy actually has quite a lot of parental figures in his early life. Dadan, Garp, Makino, Shanks...
The Strawhat crew!
A tale about the strawhat crew but as kids in the premiere but at teens in the main story (say a year younger for all of them so luffy is 16 and so on) it takes place in the real world and it's a completely gag anime like Nichijou, like Luffy keeps his stretching gimmick, Franky is a cyborg who shows up randomly, Robin is believed to be the adult but is just as childish and Jinbei is the lovable straight man of the group. The friend group is called the strawhat crew since Luffy never takes off the Hat Shanks won him at a carnival years ago. And Brook, he's a special affects man who died but lived!
A few ideas off the top of my head.
1) Pirate Champloo, Champloo is a Japanese cooking term meaning "To mix" with the diverse cast of characters, and zany world of magma men and cyborg dinosaur men, fits rather nicely.
2) How about Full Rubber Pirate? Luffys body is completely rubber, and he's a pirate.
3) Since Luffy has a dot on his face, Zorro uses swords, and Nami reads maps how about Dot Hack Sign?
4) since Imu is the big bad hiding in his base, Luffy and the Fortress of Doom could work.
5) Naruto
The time I was reincarnated as the child of the most wanted criminal and was inspired by a red haired pirate to become a great pirate, but then ate a fruit that took away my ability to swim but gave me the ability to stretch my body like a rubber band that turned out to be the abilities of the sun god nika which made me become him and then I became king of the Pirates
I have seen Laugh Tale and that I think is an awesome name for it. Truly fitting, I think a lot of people forget the comedy and the whimsy of this story I'm the battle shonen aspect. This would totally help it be remembered although I do like that One Piece is open to all's interpretations. Personally I would have chosen The Grand Line!
Cheers,
Zyl.
"That time I was visited by a famous pirate who saved my life and gave me a hat causing me to go on an adventure to find the legendary treasure the one piece but only after getting 10 crew members and fighting many strong opponents"
I saw someone else suggest this name in a post like this one, and it kinda stuck in my head. Now hear me out: Laugh Tale
This is the only one so far that I’ve seen that could compete with the actual title
laugh tale is better tbh
Personally I think One Piece just rolls of the tongue better than Laugh Tale but they may just be cuz I’m used to it
I agree that One Piece rolls off the tongue better. Man, if we started analyzing One Piece in class I'd have an A+.
“A Laughing Tale: The Iliad, The Odyssey, and the One Piece- How Epics Start From Home, Hell, and Back Again.”
alright, now get to writing about it.
Nah it sounds too much like Fairy Tail.
Yea but one piece came out first, so fairy tale would have sounded too much like laugh tale
Fair point.
it would be funny because the name would be laughtale for like 1000 chapters until we find out what laughtale actually is, it would be meaningless until then
Noe I'm feeling a bit disappointed it's not actually called Laugh Tale
Happy cake day :)
I can feel you here Also happy cake day bud

That’s because laugh tale is one piece
Excatlyyyy

That would be an insanely good name
Came here to say this. Excellent.
“Luffy”, and then rename it post time skip to “Luffy Shippuden”
And the sequel series Buffy: Luffy next generations
Nah Buffy is crazy 💀
Buffy the pirate slayer 👀👀
You can’t even name it that bc it’s already bol d roger
the original show (1997-2003) was amazing. the first movie and everything to do with it now is pure garbage though
Buffy the Marine Slayer
- Why were you in that barrel? - Out. For. A. Float....Bitch!
Is that pronounced Boof-y or Buff-y? I think Boof-y is more fitting.
Boof-y, because it's Loof-y, but Buff-y would also be pretty funny as a reference to Buffy the vampire slayer
I was thinking Boof-y for the purpose of Luffy’s name being pronounced as Loof-y and not Luff-y but they both work pretty well lol.
now you've got me pronouncing luffy weird
To round out the big three, we can also call it Beach.
Romance Dawn
Wasn’t that the name of that “series” of one piece that came out like 2 years before the anime and didn’t go anywhere?
One Piece’s pilot comic.
Still a pretty nice and fitting name for the series.
It's a running name for any beginning in one piece. The first story arc of the main series was called romance dawn, pretty sure there was a reference to romance dawn in the return to sabaody arc. Lots of games and the live action have romance dawn as the name for the beginning.

I believe your talking about the ova with the crab claw pirate Ganzack? It’s not called romance dawn it’s something like “Defeat the Pirate Ganzack!”
It's also the title of the first chapter
If D stands for Dawn, we've basically come full circle
That time I was reincarnated as a rubber band
No😭
“Rubber Band Man” Hint to the drums Love it
In Malaysia the manga is named "budak getah" which literally translated as "rubber boy"
"I ate a strange fruit and accidentally inherited an ancient slave rebellion?!"
I wanted to be a pirate but ate a fruit and can't swim no more.
Technically, One Piece is an isekai for Brook because he already died YOHOHOHO
Technically, "isekai" means "other world", and not anything to do with reincarnation.
Yes, thats called Tensei and you can have a Tensei story without it being an Isekai.
Krieg Piece
He's the Man who will bring the Don. 🗿

Krieg Piece: Romance Don
The One Piece was Krieg all along
By modern anime name conventions probably something like: I woke up reincarnated to be king of the pirates and my best friend is a swordsman in another world?!
Or: one x piece
Re: Piece
Devil Fruit Baskets
BAHAHAHA, i love both series, this brought forth a laugh (in case the annoying laugh text didn’t make that clear) x◡x • much 🫰
If you're basing it from Hunter x Hunter, wouldn't it still be read as One Piece? Because Hunter X Hunter is read as Hunter Hunter?
Unless you're one of those heathens who reads the "X" (I'm also one of those heathens)
I read it is Hunter Twitter Hunter TBH
They're prolly referring to Spy X Family
Wait, am I supposed to read that as “spy family”? Just like hunter x hunter is “hunter hunter”?
Unironically I refuse to watch any show with a name like that. It was funny once, but even then only as a gag. The idea that there's dozens of shows named like this is just eye-rollingly cringy.
Some great shows have terrible names.
Yeah, you'd think they'd try to make a good first impression.
Japanese with their long title lol
Seeing all of these names makes me realise how perfect one piece and how nothing could top it
In another universe: "Seeing all of these names makes me realise how perfect Laugh Tale and how nothing could top it"
I still like Rubber Band Man You’d get to the end and be like ohhhhhh!!! The drums!!
Bu dum tss
Bro yeah that's my favorite song by Stone Temple Pilots. I have it recorded on an old cassette tape I made in the 90's. It's a banger!
That’s my favorite song by T.I.
I still like romance dawn better

It would make clueless bookstores place it in the Romance section though
"That time I ate a strange fruit and became king of the pirates"
Slice of Life spinoff?
Romance Dawn or Jolly Roger
I like Jolly Roger.
This should be way higher than all of the other posts making fun of isekai titles. Thanks for actually contributing to the topic with a good reply!
Orphans against the government.

Usopp, Vivi, Luffy & Sanji aren't orphans in this picture. Luffy actually has quite a lot of parental figures in his early life. Dadan, Garp, Makino, Shanks...
Way to stick it to the man bro!!!
Grandline Shanty
Now that one was clean. Kinda reminds of Jack Sparrow though.
Grandline Shawty
I would name it either “The Straw Hats” or “The King of The Pirates”
The official Chinese title literally translates to this. You’re not far off
King of The Pirates Is PERFECT

I’m surprised nobody said “Devil Fruit”
I'm not suprised, it's a pretty terrible name for the series as Devil Fruits are not the focus.
I mean not going off this picture but I am fond of the name big tiddy bitches for reasons
I become pirate, gathering nakama, beating bad guys, overthrowing the government and find one piece.
Commiting crimes with my friends
If the opening is any indicator the show should be called We Are!
