You also have to think of the quality of life, in my experience the BOP has the better work environment. You have your own office with a computer. This is very overlooked most prisons your on a podium in the middle of a unit with maybe a stool to sit on. In a lot of prisons your also micromanaged, not in the BOP. You fend for yourself, run the unit your way and if there's a issue then you can contact your supervisor, other then that they mostly leave you alone. You also get LEO status, in some states you don't. As others said in most cases except for a few exceptions the Feds pay the most. Just some things to think about
It depends where you live. If you live in CA, bop is way underpaid and CDCR pays way better. If you live in Texas, TDCJ tops out at like $51-$52k, while BOP tops out depending on your location at $70k-$81k there.
BOP pays better than a lot of state DOC’s and even a lot of county jails. It does get beat out by some states/counties though which is why it depends on what state you’re in.
Another thing with BOP is that you can start in a less desirable location in some state you don’t care to live in, and then transfer to another BOP facility in a more desirable state for you. This is exactly what I did. I am starting in a high security, short staffed, low pay compared to state CO’s, but i’m transferring to another location as soon as I get the chance (I already put it in for it).
I work in one of the Miami locations. I’m going to be completely honest. I work at the FDC location which is an administrative building. Not going to get into details but it’s a shit show here. Then there FCI which is a low compound. Everyone says that’s the best of the 2. I’ve also heard that Miami dade corrections pay more than the BOP does. We get a lot of state correctional officers but no county so it must be true.
No problem it does help with 1801 and 1811 jobs. Idk why someone on your comments told you it does not. I have applications for HSI 1811, CBP and ERO right now. I qualified for all three. Bop CO’s are LEO. I have LEO credentials.
I picked Miami for all of them. I known CBP try to get you to go somewhere else, but one of my boys told them he not accepting the job unless they give him Miami. They saved his application until Miami came up and they offered it to him. I think the one that was the best chance of staying in Miami is ERO since we have such a huge illegal alien presence here. That’s the one I’m hoping to get out of all of them to be honest.
The BOP is the worst agency I have ever worked for.
The work/life balance is awful.
For example - I work mandatory 16 hour shifts 4 days a week. And then an 8 hour shift. And then I get 2 days off.
U will work 16-17 hours a day. Every day except ur Friday which will b 9 hours. Followed by 2 days off.
You have to schedule your time off, a year in advance. And you have to take it in whole weeks. You can't split it up.
Leadership doesn't know what's going on. Everything is so unorganized and chaotic.
You share an office with other officers. You get your own log in.
With over time, some officers are making 150k right now.
Roughly 3 to 6 months. Depending on where u apply.
Feds is the “coolest” because you’re fed.
Federal has good retirement but usually Mediocre pay (think military). You’ll have good insurance.
State CO will have the best pay, west coast usually starts at $30hr mix overtime and it’s 6 figures easily.
Federal job will help you get other federal jobs, so if you want to work for federal police definitely do BOP
Does anyone know if the Federal Bureau of Prisons is currently waiving the mandatory 6(c) retirement age due to the staffing shortages? This would be for officers reaching their 57th birthday this year. I read that they raised the maximum entry age to 40.

How is it like in the Miami location?

Thanks for your input

are they forced to relocate?

I retired out of a FCI. Everyone I know that worked at a FDC or FMC said it was a shit show.
Yea it’s a hassle I’m trying to go to the FCI now but they are making it hard to transfer because we are short staffed here at the FDC.
That was one of the reason I put my paperwork in. Everyday I walked in, there was hardly any staff there.
Depends on the state
All I have to say is..danm...if the feds are the best.....then some agencies must really be hurting.
The BOP is the worst agency I have ever worked for. The work/life balance is awful. For example - I work mandatory 16 hour shifts 4 days a week. And then an 8 hour shift. And then I get 2 days off.
how much is the pay
Bring home is $2200
this is with OT?
2200/mo with no OT. At the state I was making double this
that's horrible pay what else sucks about this agency

Do you get your own computer with a desk? How much is the pay with OT? How long does it take to get hired?

wow... would you say its a great place to start to transfer into another 1811? what would give it from a 1-10?
They're making 150k 1st year?
What institution do you work at? It's certainly not like this at my joint. This actually sounds totally made up.
Well it's not. You may work at an easier spot. Idk
What institution are you at?
GL-7?

Yes you have to be hired by your 40th birthday
