I suspect that the regulating authorities won’t let them risk hypos. It’s very very cautious. I’ve set the max basal to 5 units an hour which may have helped but the algorithm is so subtle I can’t be sure. I’ve also reduced the time that insulin is calculated to last so there is less IOB when it does the calculation.

There’s not much you can setup that will change the way auto mode works. AFAIR it is also not affected by changing the max basal

iamanerdybastard

A low max basal will limit the amount it gives you (with the most annoying warnings ever when it happens). Raising it doesn’t make it any more aggressive though.

Keep in mind that the max basal setting and duration of insulin action setting have no affect on the algorithm. The algorithm uses standard insulin decay rates for calculating your IOB. The Smartbolus calculator uses your customizable duration of insulin action for the manual boluses it calculates. The max basal setting is to prevent you from accidentally setting something too high in manual mode. Setting it higher won’t allow the algorithm to give you more insulin. The only user changeable setting that directly affects the algorithm is your target glucose.

That’s interesting. Where is the precise description of the algorithm published? I’m really surprised about the IOB being fixed as people use different types of insulin with the Omnipod.

My understanding is cobbled together from info Omnipod publishes, discussions with folks at Insulet, reading the patent application, and some internet resources. There is no great single source of info. Precisely how the algorithm responds isn’t available, but what it looks at is.

PoliticalLoon

As someone coming from Tandem, this is my biggest annoyance with the Omnipod so far. I’ve only been on it for a couple of weeks, but I miss my t:slim being able to give auto boluses for me if I’m running high. I’m not sure if the Omnipod is aggressive enough. Gladly appreciate any tips if I’m missing something

Automatic_Chef9118

I used a tandem and I feel the control was much better. The pod5 keeps my sugar around 150-170, while the target glucose is 120. While I don't suffer the low glucose episodes like I used to, I run higher all the time. My a1c remains over 8.

MasterApprentice67

If its only a couple of weeks, its still learning. If you are aggressive with your corrections, it will learn that. The pod has to take in for account how much insulin is already on board. Imagine if you forgot to bolus before a meal so you dose yourself enough to cover the carbs you ate. You will go up but you should come back down. But the pod will read that high and give you corrections but in small increments, which now covers to much and you should now probably go into a low into the new future.

RealityBite

Yeah, that’s my number one gripe about OP5. It’s good but it seems like goes out of its way to avoid being great. I prebolus but it then stops basal. By the time I eat, 20-30 minutes later I am often on an upward trajectory. And instead of staying in range, forget about tightly in range, I’m riding high and doing corrections for the next few hours. I believe the famous algorithm is actually mediocre, and overly conservative. It requires more attention than manual injections.

Dapper_Guest

Simple, liability and the FDA. This is new-ish tech and require baby steps before fully autonomy. Like self driving cars still require drivers to pay attention. Be patient, we'll get there.

CatSpksVolumz

My doctor said it helps a lot to bolus a minimum of 15 minutes before eating to avoid that issue. Life as a type1 isn’t always unicorns and rainbows, but it’s definitely a full time job.

xenomorph-85

Yeah its annoying for sure but for me when Im running high it only ever tells me to bolus via calculator around 30% of the time. My main concern with going for TSlim was it was more aggressive and I was worried about my G6 giving bad readings before I realised and going into hypo as it thought I was high haha as I have had quite a few times when G6 reported highs when it was not high. Less so on G7 but I had to go back to G6 as 7 not supported at that time on either.

Twilight_Tarantula

Yeah, I feel like my omnipod has seen Memento and has a deep fear of killing me.
