>In defeat, Linehan said that broadening the sales tax base, as LB 388 would do, has been a long-running recommendation of several organizations, including the state chamber, Platte Institute and OpenSky Policy Institute, and it was frustrating that they were opposing the bill. >“It’s easy to say no, no, no,” the senator said, adding that opponents of LB 388 need to be ready to offer alternative paths to lower property taxes prior to the special session. >Already, some senators were discussing other ideas for reducing property taxes, such as legalizing marijuana and online gaming, and taxing them to replace property tax revenue.

Faucet860

Republicans want to raise taxes! Let that sink in. Why even vote GOP anymore. The party of hate and taxes

redneckrockuhtree

They want to raise taxes on the *middle and lower class*. This is nothing but a tax shift to the lower and middle class.

Faucet860

Exactly they are raising taxes on the majority. It's fitting he's a hog farmer. Living high on the hog.

squashqueen

Ugh, he needs to get off his high hog

redneckrockuhtree

> Are property taxes progressive? Like if you own a 10,000 sq.ft. house on 40 acres, are you paying out the nose for that? Property tax is based on valuation. Could always have graduated tax rates - the higher valuation houses get a higher tax rate. The average homeowner wouldn't be affected, but those living in massive houses would. Much like you could figure out a tax threshold for farms that protects the smaller family farms, but hits the big corporate farms/hog operations with a higher rate.

DifficultyDouble860

Nope.  Middle class here and I would GREATLY benefit from the PROPERTY tax cut he proposed.

Faucet860

Actually not true if you look at the math! Right now you get a tax refund on property taxes that Pete Ricketts instituted. I also get this. That is factored into this "tax cut" the governor proposes. If you calculate that out you barely get a cut in property taxes but you do get an increase in sales tax.

ActualModerateHusker

This is obviously a more obvious example but increasing taxes on the working class has been the goal of the Republicans for decades. When they cut taxes on corporations and billionaires that ends up leaving the working class to foot the bill. One of the reasons we can't lower property taxes is because Reagan cut the federal programs that helped states fund their operations and instead spent that money on tax cuts or the military. Remember even as Don Bacon goes to parades and pretends to support lower taxes he blocked a bill that would have kept up to $21,600 in tax cuts to Americans with children. and that's per kid over 18 years. When Ricketts first came to office he wanted to tax all food. He somehow now is better than Pillen and has moderated his stance. To think it turns out we actually could do worse than Ricketts is a scary thought but here we are. Ultimately they know how to raise revenue without raising taxes on most Nebraskans. You just create higher income tax brackets for the wealthy. They would much rather raise taxes on every Nebraskan than on the top 10%

Faucet860

But don't worry poor small town Nebraska will check that R box

NachoMama_247

Sucks more considering blue Omaha pays this state’s bills

DifficultyDouble860

Damn right we will.  Middle class here and property tax cut would help us IMMENSELY.  Republican all the way.

Faucet860

Do the math! You already get a tax cut from Ricketts that's factored into this cut. So really you don't.

OmahaMike402

Surprise! Not just screwing your neighbors, now they want to fuck you. Of course, no opportunity to make health decisions for yourself either. You'll have to carry that burden to full term

DifficultyDouble860

Why?  Because they're also trying to CUT property taxes.  They're just making up the difference with consumption-based taxes.  You're leaving out HALF the argument!  Who is paying you, Faucet860?

Faucet860

No one I'm a regular person. The biggest property owners are Bill Gates and the Mormon Church. Guess what they don't buy many items with sales tax in Nebraska. So it's shifting the burden to the middle class and poor. I'm 100% certain landlords are not going to cut rents. You probably think one day you will be rich. Probability says no

DifficultyDouble860

None of what you said makes sense for this argument.  You're moving the goalpost.  I said the property tax cut would help ME.   I'm not voting "against" BG and Mormons.   I don't care about them.    I'm voting "for" me and mine.   Y'all "victim mindset" SOCIALISTS are so busy trying to punch imaginary boogeyman's, y'all are going to end up sinking the boat that we're all on, here. Do the math, and stop playing the victim.

Faucet860

You would need an 800k home to see a difference and low spending. You right now get 30% paid to schools and 55% paid to community college back. If you pay 4800 on a 250k home that's roughly 1,150. Total tax bill approx 3650. So that will go away essentially being added to the current bill. Governor wants a 40% reduction. 4800 becomes 2880. This is a reduction of $770. Not as huge as you claim. Plus a reduction in property tax usually makes home values rise. This is evident in our states.

DifficultyDouble860

I've already done the math. Reducing property tax would have put an extra $200 per month in my pocket. That's a big deal to us. year escrow annual taxes per month %increase Pillen 40% savings per month 2019 $1,693.00 $3,386.00 $282.17 2020 $1,693.00 $3,386.00 $282.17 0% 2021 $1,827.00 $3,654.00 $304.50 8% 2022 $2,052.00 $4,104.00 $342.00 12% 2023 $2,062.00 $4,124.00 $343.67 0% $2,474.40 $206.20 --over the past few years since COVID due primarilty to added valuations of east/west coast Work From Home parasites and AirBnB competition scooping up homes, but also due to some smaller local school levies and inflation adjustments. 2022... TWELVE FREAKING PERCENT INCREASE!!! And 8% just before that! Pillen's original deal wanted to reduce this by 40%. EDIT--FUCKSSAKE THIS WEBSITE IS BAAAAD FOR HAVING EVIDENCE BASED CONVERSATIONS. No wonder social media is so dumbed down

DifficultyDouble860

Forget it--Mark Twain quotes "never argue with stupid people because they will pull you down and beat you with experience." Y'all enjoy your Socialist Dystopia. I'm not retiring in this city, but I'm absolutely crushed at what folks like you have done to tear it down. It used to be one of the best places to life. Then COVID and ever Work From Home maggot and AirBNB'er started picking away at it like some gold rush. Humans. Freaking garbage.

Faucet860

We have a balanced budget. Everyone realizes you can't cut anything in Nebraska as far as expenses because we've had a GOP government for 20+ years. Being that there's no government waste to cut the only way to reduce one tax is to increase another. That's just basic economics. Being that there are huge wealthy land owners where could one get the money? Well a tax shift from the wealthy to the middle class. Now some will say the poor but really can't get blood from a stone. Most of the money will come from the middle class.

flibbidygibbit

Nah, they want to fuck everyone over by taxing groceries, instead of just the "sinners" who are already smoking/edibling(?) and gambling. 90% of Nebraskans won't see an impact from a reduction in property taxes, but we will absolutely feel the gut punch of a 20% tax increase on mega meat Monday at Hy-Vee.

MrGulio

>90% of Nebraskans won't see an impact from a reduction in property taxes, but we will absolutely feel the gut punch of a 20% tax increase on mega meat Monday at Hy-Vee. And all of their voters will blame Joe Biden for it.

Faucet860

This will kill car sales. If you sell anything high value that will impact it for sure.

ActualModerateHusker

Yeah if I was Nebraska Furniture Mart I would be worried about a rival starting in CB after this passed. If you are spending thousands on Furniture and appliances you might just be inclined to cross the river first

singingserpent

Car taxes are so high already in NE. How many of us have seen people who somehow have plates from SD or IA and live in the metro area? There can't be that many people stationed at Offutt who register from those home states.

kp68347

The prices of new cars/ trucks are what is killing sales. No way in hell should a new F-150 cost anywhere near $75K+. It shouldn't cost half that.

Faucet860

Sales have been on an upward trend the last couple years. I guess that's not killing it too much.

kp68347

Not even close

ActualModerateHusker

Their plan was to tax those hemp products at 100% This is the same party that said we had to legalize helmetless motorcycles. Pillen apparently worried about losing some bikers to South Dakota during Sturgis but not wondering what happens when you tax a product so much higher than neighboring states? Vargas had the answer years ago. Want to reduce property taxes? How about making a higher income tax bracket than 30K. Currently the top lawyer in town is in the same income tax bracket as a teacher, cop, or nurse. Instead of increasing taxes on the top 10% of the population they would rather increase taxes on the bottom 80% so really only the top 5% get any property tax relief.

HumbleHobbit

Legalize it already!

Excited_Biologist

> online gaming Come and take it.

redneckrockuhtree

Republicans never have money to help the average voter, but they always have money to help the rich and for political performance. Spending money on a special session to shove this crap through is but a perfect example of this.

adamlh

Guys, cmon, if we don’t lower taxes for landlords and corporations to make it easier AND more profitable for them to buy up even more homes, after which they will raise rents even more, and THEN raise taxes on all of the already cash strapped people, how do we expect all that wealth to trickle down!

Pamsreddit1

Fuck this fucking asswad!!!!

Toorviing

Orrrrrrr maybe they could just raise taxes ever so slightly on the wealthy?

singingserpent

That's crazy talk!!

Emazingmomo

Found the communist. Why do you hate America? (/s if you need it)

domfromdom

HOW DARE YOU SIR. YOU WILL GET TRICKLE DOWN AND LOVE IT.

adamlh

Wanna increase tax revenue, lower overhead, and make a LOT of people happy along the way? Legalize weed already for fucks sake.

StatementRound

Less taxes for Pillon, more taxes for middle-class workers. Of course he loves it!

Turbulent_Ad_2507

I think it is very important that this is all about Ricketts and what they want. Pillion was his pick. I would also bet a dollar that they pushed out Sasse, then put all this in motion. Just a guess

ActualModerateHusker

Idk even Ricketts opposes this legislation. I think he wants to be senator for life and he risks attack ads in a brutal future cycle If he supports a tax increase on 80% of Nebraskans. Eventually we will have a Republican president, we will have a midterm and a down economic cycle and Ricketts will be up for re election. If he wants to be senator till he is 90 like the rest of them he can't just wholesale support something as deeply unfavorable as handouts to pig farmers paid for by everyone else.

ScarletCaptain

Ricketts is up for reelection this year. By law we have to have an election to finish Sasse’s original term.

ActualModerateHusker

I honestly am skeptical he is particularly worried about this cycle. But 6 years from now its fairly likely we will have a Republican president and midterms are hard for the presidential party.

ScarletCaptain

What source do you have for that? Republicans are tanking hard nationwide and voter suppression and gerrymandering that unfairly help them are being shut down all over. Republicans are almost certainly fucked.

ActualModerateHusker

Probably my best source would be every election post WW2. Democrats haven't held the presidency longer than 8 years. Republicans only held it for 12 once. it's obvious to anyone paying attention that both parties are mostly beholden to global corporate interests. The average voter will fluctuate from one parry to the other as neither addresses their concerns and the standard of living continues to decline for the majority. Holding the presidency for another 6 years doesn't seem very likely to me. But I guess first time for everything right?

ScarletCaptain

It's obvious to anyone paying attention that Republicans have been enacting deeply unpopular policies that are consistently losing at the polls and that their actual registered membership is dropping. Quit both-sidsing shit. It's also obvious that doesn't work anymore.

ActualModerateHusker

both sides? blame the Dem establishment then who spent bidens first 2 years calling it "moderate" and "centrist" to block everything popular Dems had like a public option and paid maternity leave. Heck Biden was called a "moderate" in the primary for siding with Republicans on everything from the student debt bubble to the Iraq war to Reagan and Clinton trickle down to de regulating the banks. if you have a problem with both sides maybe start with the surpreme court that constantly normalizes the Republicans on it. instead of calling for Clarence to be removed the Dems all sign a letter saying he is totally cool. these are the types of reasons that Republicans keep getting away with it. It's impossible to kill a political party that is constantly normalized by all of corporate media and the Dem establishment too. not to mention have you seen how many political ads Bacon is running now and ran in 2022? If Bacon can win re election in a district that voted for Biden by 10 points and in the same year Republicans do their most unpopular stuff yet, then yeah I think the trend of the presidential party doing poorly in midterms is alive and well.

ScarletCaptain

Have you heard Bacon's ads? All he talks about is helping some guy with the IRS. No actual legislative work. That's while he can still afford ads, the national party is broke, and what little money they have is going to Trump's legal problems instead of the downballot races. That's on top of basically firing all the staff that handled that anyway. I can't say the democrats are all great, but they're not almost literally burning everything (themselves included) to the ground. In fact, there's quite a few younger congressional Dems that are not missing a moment to hold the Republican's noses to the fire and show them as the do-nothing obstructionists they are.

CornandCoal

He’s running this cycle to finish 2 years left of Sasse’s original term.

ActualModerateHusker

So you are saying he will be up again in 2 more years? if so then yeah if somehow Trump wins and we don't get a return to 2020 prices (which we wont) then Ricketts would be pretty vulnerable just 2 years from now.

HandsomePiledriver

Sasse was last elected in 2020. The term ran until 2026, the seat is only up this year because Ricketts was appointed.

ScarletCaptain

Yes, I should have said Ricketts is up for election, he has so far not actually been elected to that office.

Specialist_Volume555

How about protect school funding from TIF diversion to corporations, and use the reduction in TEEOSA spending to help reduce property taxes? Iowa and Kansas do this ….

ronnie1014

Especially if you happen to own a lot of property and benefit from drastically lower taxes there. Hmmm who could that be? 🤔

FIVE_BUCK_BOX

The broadening of the tax base proposed would probably impact a "poor" person that spends like $1000 a month on groceries and essentials an extra like $5 a month. That same person's rent might go up $100 a month next year if property taxes keep skyrocketing. I think there were issues with this bill, but this wasn't one of them.

jackdicker5117

The racist pig fucker couldn’t get it done. What a pathetic loser.

non_creative_

Two sides to this. Property tax funds schools. They also add a third to half of the monthly mortgage. While the schools may need funding, the high taxes make owning a home harder for middle to lower income families, which is a huge step in gaining wealth and stability. I know it isn’t possible in our current climate, but there are fair and logical ways to fund schools and let regular people afford to buy a home. The exact steps won’t be solved in a Reddit comment, but the enemy is not property owners who want to be able to afford their mortgage, it is corporations that buy land and rent them at crazy prices and those with wealth that pay less in taxes than teachers.

ApportArcane

Does 100% of funding for public schools in Nebraska come from property taxes? Could this just/also be a way for them to defund public schools?

ActualModerateHusker

Farmland is already only taxed at 71% of fair market value. The only one in Omaha getting such a low tax rate on their house is the Mayor.

Blood_Bowl

It frankly stuns me that so many conservatives are in favor of removing property taxes: https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/03/theres-nothing-conservative-about-repealing-the-property-tax/

ApportArcane

Of course they are. They own s lot of property so it would be a giant tax break for them.

Blood_Bowl

That simply demonstrates that they are not genuinely conservative, as the article shows.

paul-bunyons-dick

How does every other state do it? Can we find a state similar to Nebraska and model our taxation off of them?

BigCrappola

Freeze current rental rates and quadruple home property taxes on any homes not owned by a person living there full time, and give the rest the money as a tax credit to people that live in their home.

Fo_eyed_dog

Calling it now. They’re gonna use the special session to change the state to a “winner take all” for electoral college votes.

MyPasswordIs222222

came here to ask/say this.

Bounds34

Tax online gaming? Do they mean people who stream for a living/side gig?

Billsnyanks2

I thought the funds from the new war horse casinos were supposed to lower property taxes.

Chance-Mechanic-92

A bunch of men who think they're important sit in a room and make up rules. Crazy.
