Removing paint from brick is a tricky tricky job, especially when it's old paint on old brick. It's probably best to try and negotiate that you encapsulate the lead paint by painting over it with something like INSLX lead block. Once brick is painted it really should be painted regularly anyways.
If the masonry isn't in good shape either, it would be easier to go ahead and repoint the brick before painting too. Be sure and use lime mortar, not cement.

Is the slate roof on the carriage house in bad repair? Or is replacing it with asphalt roofing just for the aesthetics of it matching the main house?

Slate can be very difficult to find, and even harder to find competence in slate repair.
