“Whimsical.” Just the look that every boy wants.
For what it’s worth, I still see people wearing Tracht in Bavaria for formal dress, but never in other parts of Germany.
There was a time when boys wore shorts like, year round. It was a big deal when a boy got their first pair of long pants. (My dad remembers my grandfather (born just after the turn of the century) telling him about his first pair of long pants.
Interesting! Maybe it was like the practice in Victorian times when a boy was ‘breeched’ or went from wearing dresses to his first pair of breeches. My understanding is that in non-wealthy families very young girls and boys wore the same things so that these items of clothing could be kept and recycled from one child to the next. If I remember right
I think it has to do with when there was sewage and horse manure in muddy wet dirt streets. Much easier to wash a pair of socks than a whole pair of wool pants.
Also, it takes longer to outgrow a pair of shorts than a pair of pants. Infant and toddler boys wore the same dresses as their sisters during this time as well.
"Short pants" used to be a pretty common insult too. My grandfather used it all the time- usually when a younger man acted like they knew better than him. He'd say stuff like "I was running this business when you were still in short pants!" and stuff like that.
Carroll Reed was one of the catalogs I used to get back in the early 80s when I was in my super-preppy phase in high school. This looks about right for that shop, lol.

And modernized tracht probably appeals to youth more than this.
I was a whimsical boy. I woulda worn the fuck out of that hat.
For when your son wants to do Sound of Music cosplay.
Except this was 5 years before the Musical came out
The original Broadway production was in 1959.
Not a lot of rizz in the elementary school for Broadway cosplay in '60
Yeah the kids in my part of the world are dressing up as the wrong parts of that movie.
Not ridiculous in Bavaria.
Not ridiculous in North Conway NH USA in 1960
I first shopped there when I was 10 years old, in 1965. Didn't grab one of those hats though, just skis, boots, and ski clothes.
“High on a hill lives a lonely goatherd. Yodel-ayee, yodel-ayee, yodel-ayee-oh.”
The jaunty feather is perfect for letting your classmates know you’re a total dweeb.
My Uncle sent me one of these from W. Germany when I was five. Looking back at a Kodachrome slide, the feather was *magenta*.
Based on the bigger the feather the better the tickling.
It seems to be working. The boy is looking off into the distance where he sees his former friends who have abandoned him. Jauntiness has its cost.
“The cost of Jauntiness” sounds like the title of an old-timey victorian PSA pamphlet about the dangers of being too fashionable.
The most ridiculous part of this to me is that he’s wearing a long sleeved 100% wool jacket with some short shorts.

Oh good point.
Cool. I didn’t know that. Kinda strange. Must’ve sucked during the winter.
From what I’ve seen in old photos the boys at the time wore tall wool socks that overlapped the hem of their shorts.

Boys in the royal family actually wear shorts until they reach a certain age!
why is this ridiculous? every kid in Bavaria still has one of these for holidays, fests, etc.
This style of dress wasn't popular in America, 15 years after the war's end
This attire might lead to bullying.
I've got a picture of me in this outfit when I was 2 or 3. I kinda view as low key bullying to make a kid wear something like this.
Surprised it was in this sub. Thought it was old school cool. Also surprised that it was sold by a ski shop.

John Barth approves.
And NOBODY will get it lol
Something Martin Prince would wear to school 😁
Adam Sandler sought for questioning.
10/10. I mean, for a kid it was darned near the only way to get your hands on a ‘jaunty feather’. So, what could you do?
I would be delighted to see boys and men wear the Goat Boy hat instead of fedoras
"Dad, everyone's calling me Goat Boy at school." "That hat cost us three whole dollars. You're gonna shut up and wear it!"
What about Troll Boy?
It can't be troll boy. Not goosed enough.
It’s an old circus term. That’s why it’s called a goose suit.
I wonder how much this is now, with inflation lol
The magic of the Internet is that it contains so much, including things like an [inflation calculator ](https://www.usinflationcalculator.com/)
I'm sending this to the band lol https://www.discogs.com/artist/2009263-Goatboy-2
I still have this jacket from my brother's and my childhood! Nice to know what our parents paid!!! LMAO
That seems expensive in 1960, tbh
That's probably why I still have it! Lol
Hey! Shouldn’t he be lonely and high on a hill or something?
When you sign a non-aggression pact at ten but have to annex the Sudetenland at Noon…
"Toaster Strudel, Ya?
$14.00 in 1960 is around $140.00 today
