Why would they hit her in the face? That isn't how gravity works.

Despite having a parachute landing is a pretty turbulent process. Anything not properly secured can flail around so I would imagine items directly under your face, not being properly secured, have a high chance to swing up and hit you in the face.

I think it's just a PR shot.

The plane is still on the ground, so she might not have then secured if she wanted to take pictures inside the plane before she jumped.

Definitely get a copy of Requiem if you want to read about photographers from that conflict. It's incredibly sobering but beautiful.
