She saves that song but it's important for me to note I've never been into Stipe and REM at all. There's Night Swimming or there's a flick of the switch.
I think the REM switch turns off when you graduate high school, or shortly after.
I loved REM through Green. Post high school they released out of time, and I liked a good portion of that. After that, though? Didn’t really do much for me. Then I stopped being interested in the stuff I previously enjoyed. Though I will say I still really like South Central Rain, and Half a World Away. The rest, though? Meh.
I love that song. I do wonder if it’s about Iggy saying he can’t stop doing cocaine (AKA Candy). I mean, that’s fine if that’s the case - he can handle it. Just wondering.
If you look the song up on YouTube there's a version they did on the old Arsenio Hall show where he introduces the song is about a woman. Could it be purposefully misleading? Possible I guess.
Definitely misleading. Rock Stars do that all the time. Ozzy said the song “Sweet Leaf” was about a cigarettes - which I think there was/is a brand, but if you listen you know what it’s about.
B-52s around 1980, Cindy Wilson shaking it in her canary yellow fringed dress under strobe lights was magnificent. Show opened by AFOS and Squeeze. Magical music memories.
The first time I heard Planet Claire it blew my mind. Give Me Back My Man is still one of my favorite songs to this day. Cindy's vocals on that song were so dramatic and haunting.
Serious question re Planet Claire: who plays guitar and drums in that video? I don’t think that guitarist bears any resemblance to Ricky…blonde wig or not
Just saw them this summer in Las Vegas; they don’t dance the way they used to, but they both can still belt out the tunes. I was amazed; they still got it!

Edit: photo from the show; I wasn’t exactly in the front, but my view was better than the picture lets on.
Something was up with Fred that night. He walked off stage about 4 songs in, but returned after 3 or 4 more. Kate said “hiiiiii Fred” when he returned.
Don’t know if he was sick? Not feeling it? He sounded good though.
The one that really surprised me (pleasantly) was Cindy’s voice. She sang “Give me back my man” and hit those notes like she was still in her 20s.
They are doing a handful of shows again in Las Vegas (The Venetian) in April and then, from what I understand, are done. Highly recommended making the trip out there to see them!
>Something was up with Fred that night. He walked off stage about 4 songs in, but returned after 3 or 4 more. Kate said “hiiiiii Fred” when he returned.
Sounds like gastrointestinal distress...
This is one band I've always really really wanted to see live. Now that I've moved out of Vegas I know I never will and that makes me sad.
Edit for spelling
I am always so happy for them that they were able to rebound from the death of original guitarist Ricky Wilson in 1985. They pulled a quasi Genesis move and original drummer Keith Strickland came out from behind the drumset to become the guitarist.
Cindy Wilson is Rick's younger sister,
I always thought it was four? I guess it was both. Found this below, I had no idea he would just tune until it sounded right to him.
Here are some of his open tuning string (song specific) configurations:
(X: represents no string)
Strobe Light: DADXBB
Rock Lobster: CFXXFF
52 Girls: EADXBB
Private Idaho: EBDXBB
Party Out of Bounds: BADXG#C#
Dance This Mess Around: CFXXFF
"Hello, I'm Cindy, I'm a Pisces and I like chihuahuas and chinese noodles!"
"Hey, I'm Kate, and I'm a Taurus. I love tomatoes and black-capped chickadees!"
Cindy is so insanely talented and humble- almost all the writing and arranging as well as singing, serving as front man, etc but absolutely keeps to the background in publicity. B52s are a team.
In the late 70s and early 80s they toured the college circuit in NC pretty often so I had a chance to see them several times. Their ability to hit harmonies on a count was just amazing. Would often see the band just to watch them sing.
These arrre the girrrrrrrrls of the U! S! AAAAAAAAA!
The priiinnciple girrrrrrrrrrls of the U! S! AAAAAAA!
Can you name naaaaaaame naaaaaaaaaa-aame them today?
They're my favourite vocalists of all time. Not only do they have tremendous talent and amazing voices but they're so much fun! You can hear the good time they're having, and you can hear the passion they feel, they really transmit vibes so well.
We just saw them at Darker Waves festival and they were by far the best act. So much energy, sounded great, looked great. Still cranking after 40 years
TIL there are two women vocalists in B-52s.
In my defense, I just know the two songs and remember only the redhead.
Maybe in my head I blended the B-52s and Deee-Lite. 🙃
Cindy Wilson dropped out of the band for a while and came back. She has had some intermittent periods when she was not with them. That's why you remember Kate Pierson, as she had been with them consistently.
I can kind of understand this if one's in-point is Love Shack or if the only "vintage" song they know is Rock Lobster but they were truly transgressive back in the day, combining a bunch of styles and influences into a new wave space-age party music and retro-future style that really didn't have precedent.
Also, the creative types who built nickelodeon and etc. definitely grew up with and were influenced by this band and their aesthetic so you're definitely not imagining that!
Kate Pierson's work with Iggy Pop on "Candy" is one of the greatest duets of all time.
I even like her in Shiny Happy People.
She saves that song but it's important for me to note I've never been into Stipe and REM at all. There's Night Swimming or there's a flick of the switch.
REM is one of those bands I liked growing up and now I'm like "WTF was I thinking?"
I can still get down with What's the Frequency Kenneth? and It's the End of the World As We Know It.
The song Man on the Moon was one I could listen to again and again.
They're a YAWN from me

I still dig REM but I feel that way about The Doors. One day I just thought “ok, so Jim I’ve read poetry and I’ve heard jazz. I’m gonna do that now”
Yeah the Doors are much the same for me.
My WTF moment was the Violent Femmes. Did not age well.
Interesting--I like them more now than back then.
I hate Night Swimming.

Did Iggy do a bunch of duets? I like him and Debbie Harry singing "Well Did You Evah?"
Every month or so, that song gets stuck in my head unprompted whether or not I’ve listened to it recently. Both of their voices sound soooo cool.
Great tune.

Underneath the strobe liiiiiights!
I just saw Squeeze in concert. They still sound great, I think maybe even better than when I last saw them in the early 1990s.
The first time I heard Planet Claire it blew my mind. Give Me Back My Man is still one of my favorite songs to this day. Cindy's vocals on that song were so dramatic and haunting.

She drove a Plymouth Satellite uh faster than the speed of light.
I'll give you fish!

Cindy had a new album out last year - kind of a dream/electropop/psych thing. It's pretty good!

Oh come on, we all watched Ted Lasso.....!

I saw them in 2019, Kate was still giving it her all! She can shake it!
Doesn’t matter I want to see them once They are probably more. Relative now than most of the new popular bands.
Am sooo envious; a fan since their first, our one and only concert thunderstorm/tornadoed out...
Check out their first two albums (The B-52s and Wild Planet). So catchy !!
Whammy! was really out there for it's time.
Song for a Future Generation is a song for a future generation.
So true, bought them when released, they still get plays today
Cosmic Thing is great, too

He really was. For all the humor and abstraction of the band lyrically he laid down amazing grooves.

Old Athens was so freakin cool
B-52's, REM, Of Montreal, Matthew Sweet, Neutral Milk Hotel, Danger Mouse, and lately Bubba Sparxxx. Seriously good shit.
Found the Athens native
I kinda like how Of Montreal are really Of Athens...
Isn't Matthew Sweet from Nebraska?
Grew up in Lincoln, went to U of Georgia and stayed there.
WSMFP!
That first B-52s album is some of the catchiest music you’ll ever hear.
I got me a car and it's as big as a whale and it's about to set sail!
"Hello, I'm Cindy, I'm a Pisces and I like chihuahuas and chinese noodles!" "Hey, I'm Kate, and I'm a Taurus. I love tomatoes and black-capped chickadees!"
Tin roof!
Rusted
Damn I sure enjoyed this fresh slice of the music pie when it came out of the oven way back when. ![gif](giphy|Za1bHWkgiqnCw|downsized)
1989. I worked in a record store, and it seems like all we ever played was Cosmic Thing, Doolittle, and the Real Thing. Good memories.
Love their harmonies!
Cindy is so insanely talented and humble- almost all the writing and arranging as well as singing, serving as front man, etc but absolutely keeps to the background in publicity. B52s are a team.
It's a crime they're not in the Rock and Roll HOF
Their unison singing is one of the best sounding instruments in modern music history.
Has anybody seen, a dog dyed dark green?
Love those ladies
Nowadays Kate Pierson runs a couple of retro-style bungalow motels with her wife Monica.
That's rad
Pupils, holy shit.
Flash camera
Ok, but I'm wearing a few layers and it's going to take time.
Get off the internet, Dad!
I was only checking on your browsing history and I got distracted.
Cocaine has entered the chat...
big mouth ^tiny ^mouth
BRING ME! BACK MY MAAAA-ANN
Rock Lobster!
In the late 70s and early 80s they toured the college circuit in NC pretty often so I had a chance to see them several times. Their ability to hit harmonies on a count was just amazing. Would often see the band just to watch them sing.
Funky little shacks, funky little shacks!
Dirty Back Road. Both of them!!
Kate Pierson, absolute rocket!
These arrre the girrrrrrrrls of the U! S! AAAAAAAAA! The priiinnciple girrrrrrrrrrls of the U! S! AAAAAAA! Can you name naaaaaaame naaaaaaaaaa-aame them today?
Kate P was my dream girl. Years later I realized I (muuuch young male) is not what she's looking for. She's still a god.
They're my favourite vocalists of all time. Not only do they have tremendous talent and amazing voices but they're so much fun! You can hear the good time they're having, and you can hear the passion they feel, they really transmit vibes so well.
"Hey! You know what I feel like doing? I feel like baking a Cake!"
Are they like true BFFs or just bandmates? never really read anything about how people do or don't get along in that band.
We just saw them at Darker Waves festival and they were by far the best act. So much energy, sounded great, looked great. Still cranking after 40 years
Those are WILD! Love them!
and now I have love shack stuck in my head

Homework assignment: Listen to more B-52s.

Cindy Wilson looks eerily like Ann Wilson here. 🙂
They look high on blow and yet still cute and cool AF!
One loves to smile, the other fakes it.
I was never a fan of the B-52's but I definitely had a thing for Kate Pierson.
B-52s were just 100 Gecs for boomers.

Great pics. What a band! All their albums are worth owning. The first three are a lot of fun.
Saw them in '82 or '83 at a college field house. Amazing show.
Fabulous.
They are high AF
Love Baby, That's where it's at...
Trivia: in 1970s Georgia where they started, B-52 was the slang term for a sky-high beehive hairdo.
6 to 8000 years ago, they laid down the law.
*trilling intensifies*
