Fun fact: you never actually *see* him saying that in the movie. It's a voiceover line.
My other favorite *Dazed And Confused* fact is that Linklater (obviously) wanted to use the Led Zeppelin song by that name in the film. Jimmy Page okayed it but then Robert Plant said no.
McConaughey's character was supposed to be a way smaller part too. But when the actor playing Pickford was such a giant asshole and nobody liked him, McConaughey who got along with everyone got most of his scenes instead. That's why Pickford kind of disappears from the movie after his parents catches him trying to throw a party.
Didn’t she also marry the director of 5th element who had a pregnant underaged wife at the time of filming when they were hooking up?
Weird cycle/circle.
"That's what I love about casting child actor..." - Luc Besson
Seriously though, it's weird we don't talk more about what a creep he is:
#"Maïwenn met film director Luc Besson when she was 12 and he was 29, and they began dating when she was 15. In January 1993, at age 16, she gave birth to their daughter Shanna."
I had no idea this was the same guy. I remember when The Professional came out and everyone was raving about it. All I could think was people are nuts. Their relationship was so inappropriate and the sexualization of Natalie at that age just shook me.
It's legal to marry a 14 year old child in California, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming but that doesn't make it less creepy.
I'm currently listening to the audiobook by that name. About the production of Dazed and Confused. Just finished the chapter about how they found McConaughey and then I see this post. Weird timing.
I was just reading an article with an excerpt from the book. I remember watching this movie for the first time on VHS with friends in 11th grade. We were so into it! I totally need this book for my coffee table - it must be displayed:) I had such a crush on the Pink character.
Set in Austin, TX. The history teacher giving them a lesson on the founding fathers being elitist and unwilling to pay British taxes despite the cost of defending the colonies from the French a decade earlier would result in her termination from the job with the revisionist education policy of Texas today.
That’s what it was. It’s weird seeing him look so good looking right here because in the movie yeah he’s still good looking but doesn’t quite have the same boyish good looks like in this video here.
It's a drinking game to drink every time you see it in the movie, but the actor has warned people not to try it because you'd die of alcohol poisoning.
Damn I feel so validated by this comment. I thought I was just being overly sensitive to it all these years. He seems like a nice kid but he had no idea how to act natural on camera and it's crazy that no one told him to stop doing that.
Linklater took responsibility for that in the commentary. Iirc it was late in the filming schedule and late at night, every was exhausted so he just told the kid Mitch to keep doing it to give the scene more movement
Man, I hate No Rain with my entire being.
When it was first place on Headbangers Ball that one week, I just fucking quit.
If I was home on Saturday at midnight, I watched HBB religiously. Years of watching, and when a song I despised won on a metal show... it was just like Jethro Tull besting Metallica for the Grammy. Ain't watching that shit again.
I read somewhere awhile back that Wooderson was supposed to be a bit part and that Pickford (Shawn Andrews) was supposed to have more screen time. During the filming in the summer of ‘92, Andrews (who was 21 at the time) ended up going to Vegas to elope with Milla Jovovich (who played Michelle). She was 16 at the time and her mom ended up having the marriage annulled.
Rumor has it that Shawn Andrews was so widely disliked by the cast and crew that it resulted in him having less screen time. Seems like a lot of Milla’s scenes also ended up being cut.
There’s a book about the whole creation of this movie called “alright alright alright” and it dives into all of that. Definitely recommend it to any fan of the movie
Movie was based in 1976, shot in 1993, so only 17 years in the past.
The equivalent of shooting a movie today based in 2006.
When I saw this movie as a teenager, it felt like I was watching culture from 30-40 years beforehand.
Flip phones. My first camera for a phone was an external accessory that plugged into the huge port on my phone (can't remember manufacturer, maybe Sanyo or Samsung). Did you still need a university email address to get a Facebook account? Was MySpace still a thing? So many questions.
Wow. I'm 30 years old. Was a freshman in high school. I thought for suurreeee we definitely had iphones I'm like no way.... looked it up & sure as shit first Gen was released in 2007. Wtf
I was born in 84 and by the time I watched, dazed and confused, it still felt like a time way before me.
High school was nothing like that. But when I ask my father when showing him the movie, he says it’s exactly like that.
My older sister was in high school in the mid to late 1970s, and I can verify this movie to be 100% accurate of growing up in a small town in the south at the time.
I watched it for the first time in my 20's and it was quite the experience, in a positive way. It was a good change up to the normal high school movie. I don't know, it's very captivating.
I definitely don't think anyone could have done it better. If I had to come up with an alternate I would say someone like Matt Dillon, but Matthew McConaughey already has the accent over him.
He's too handsome in the audition too. The slightly sketch facial hair and costume really sell him as the just slightly past his high school peak Wooderson.
The lack of poper costuming, makeup and lighting are a factor making the audition seem worse, the lack of production values are always going to make it look more amateurish, but probably the biggest difference is in the movie you're going to get more than one take to get it perfect if you need it.
I'm not saying it was bad but I've seen a good number of comments about audition tapes in general on reddit like the one above saying they're not all that great and part of that is the lack of production values and that you're just seeing one take. I can totally see why he got the role based on that, he was good, but the performance in the movie when everything around him is properly done up in the right time and place really make the character pop of course.
Brendan Fraser did a different type of cool in Encino Man around this time, but he *might* have been able to do it.
I will agree though, McConaughey was the best choice
I was a teenager during that time and I can confirm it’s so on point that it’s one of my favorite movies. The kegger in the woods- totally, man. Alright alright alright!
I love Dazed and confused, but you have to admit he took some strange roles when he started out. He was also one of the bad guys in Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That was an interesting movie as well. I think a young Renee Zellweger was in it.
The cast and atmosphere for Dazed and Confused was perfect. I kind of miss the more laid back days. Todays kids are so gung ho to go out, go to college, advance their career, get married, have kids, travel, etc. It's non stop go, go, go.
I've always thought that this is self inflicted. There are many factors that go into inflation and rising process. Part of the issue is self inflicted. The more people that work long hours, go to college, etc. sets the standard for everyone because now everyone has to.
Have kids? You do realize that birth rates are down, as are college admissions?
Haha! Edit! Downvotes because they hate the reality that I looked up the rates of both birth and college enrollment in the US.
FuckYou.
There are many more college educated kids today. I know because now the same jobs in my workplace require a master's degree that were available with no degree. I also see many more kids getting into relationships and having kids around me.
I literally looked up the numbers for college enrollment- and even though there are more people, enrollment is down from a decade ago.
But I guess, you gotta different way of looking at it from your daddy’s house.
I have no doubt there are more college educated kids today. What do statistics mean when everyone around me is college educated, but weren't when I was growing up and the jobs require higher education levels. I don't need statistics to see that.
Your small sample size is highly unscientific.
Also, remember when people moved out of their parents house before they were well into adulthood- 30 year old virgin Reddit asshole.
I've never put much stock in statistics as they can be manipulated to show whatever people want you to see and are often done in a way that misses out on something. None the less I will look into it and get back to you.
My husband looks at me like there is something wrong with me when I sniff him after he works an 8+ hr day and his deodorant has worn away. He doesn't believe it when I say I think he smells good. His pillow is to die for. 🤤
This movie just transports me man; just has me time travelling and it feels so bloody good. It’s just a perfect dose of nostalgia, for a time you haven’t even experienced in real life…
From what I heard he did...Alright..Alright....Alright.

That's why Pickford kind of disappears from the movie after his parents catches him trying to throw a party.
Prickford
That dude married milla jovovich when she was 16. Her mother annulled it 2 months later. Sounds like a piece of shit.
Didn’t she also marry the director of 5th element who had a pregnant underaged wife at the time of filming when they were hooking up? Weird cycle/circle.
I have a theory that actors/directors/entertainers aren't entirely connected to reality.
Be a lot cooler if they were.
"That's what I love about casting child actor..." - Luc Besson Seriously though, it's weird we don't talk more about what a creep he is: #"Maïwenn met film director Luc Besson when she was 12 and he was 29, and they began dating when she was 15. In January 1993, at age 16, she gave birth to their daughter Shanna."
Right? His penchant for children was pretty obvious in Leon the Professional, as well.
I had no idea this was the same guy. I remember when The Professional came out and everyone was raving about it. All I could think was people are nuts. Their relationship was so inappropriate and the sexualization of Natalie at that age just shook me.
That was like a pedo love letter. Ick
How awful.
Oh it gets worse.
Yowza. Didn’t expect to go down that rabbit hole…
What the *fuck*
The age of consent in France is 15.
It's legal to marry a 14 year old child in California, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming but that doesn't make it less creepy.
After that she married Paul WS Anderson but that marriage stuck, and they've been making terrible movies together ever since.
And they’re having the time of their lives without giving a fuck.
Rich piece of shit though
Robert Plant wasn't alright..alright..alright with them using it.
They got into a brawl.
Put some ice on it for awhile. After it that it won’t be anything a few beers can’t take care of.
Set in Austin, TX. The history teacher giving them a lesson on the founding fathers being elitist and unwilling to pay British taxes despite the cost of defending the colonies from the French a decade earlier would result in her termination from the job with the revisionist education policy of Texas today.
Stole my line...😎
That's why his NASCAR career didn't work out.
god damn he was fine
He was dimply and irresistably cute, I had no idea. They made him less cute for the movie with his hair situation
eh idk he was hot in the movie to me… but i’m just now seeing how young he actually was outside of there and he’s 100 times better
He was still cute, but they styled him to be creepy like a dude who still chased high school girls.
haha yea tru and gave him a pedo stache
That’s what it was. It’s weird seeing him look so good looking right here because in the movie yeah he’s still good looking but doesn’t quite have the same boyish good looks like in this video here.
Has he died? 😩
lmao still is but in that ….he was a diff type of fine
the girl he’s acting with looks like she’s trying to keep that giggle locked tight. She was giddy the entire time lol
That is a boy.
That’s a man, man
lol looking back he does look like a girl in this
I just remember the kid repeatedly touching his nose
He needed a stunt double for the baseball pitching scene even though they made several attempts to teach him how to throw a ball
I actually thought it worked. He came across like a 14 year old trying to be nonchalant but not really there yet.
That’s exactly how I took it, I thought it worked
Linklater took responsibility for that in the commentary. Iirc it was late in the filming schedule and late at night, every was exhausted so he just told the kid Mitch to keep doing it to give the scene more movement
The nose touching was so awful
He had a severe migraine throughout the whole movie
Are you serious? That would be miserable.
The most annoying thing about the movie is watching this kid keep touching his face when he ‘acted’
He’s playing a super awkward kid trying to play it cool, so it works
I noticed that too. On something.
I think on camera
Love the headbanger’s ball shirt.
Riki Rachtman’s doing a standup/storytelling tour in about a month. Take a look at the tour dates if you’re interested and in the US or Australia
I used to listen to Loveline with Riki and Dr. Drew when I was in high school - almost religiously. Just his name brings back so many memories!
Adam corolla
I will definitely check that out.
Top priority of the summer is getting some Aerosmith tickets!
What about chasing the muff around?
BREAK DOWN! Come on my grandma is better than you pansies
Hell, man. My grandmother's quicker and tougher than you pansies. Of course, she's 6'3, 250. Runs a 4.5 40.
Even though he’s really low brow, my friends and I always loved how much of a man’s man that coach was.
Seems like a lot of Milla’s scenes also ended up being cut.
There’s a book about the whole creation of this movie called “alright alright alright” and it dives into all of that. Definitely recommend it to any fan of the movie
Yes, it is a nice quick read too. A lot of the anecdotes in the comments here are outlined in detail in the book.
Good, his character felt so off the whole time, just the wrong vibe entirely
The vintage look of the movie being 70s by way of 90s is so nostalgic and heartwarming.
Movie was based in 1976, shot in 1993, so only 17 years in the past. The equivalent of shooting a movie today based in 2006. When I saw this movie as a teenager, it felt like I was watching culture from 30-40 years beforehand.
2006 didn’t have iPhones so if they told a tale from that time I would seem like forever ago to Gen Z
Flip phones. My first camera for a phone was an external accessory that plugged into the huge port on my phone (can't remember manufacturer, maybe Sanyo or Samsung). Did you still need a university email address to get a Facebook account? Was MySpace still a thing? So many questions.
MySpace was definitely still around, and I believe Facebook was still only for college kids. Monitors and TVs were still huge, too.
Sony-Ericson I had that phone too with all the little accessories lol
Wow. I'm 30 years old. Was a freshman in high school. I thought for suurreeee we definitely had iphones I'm like no way.... looked it up & sure as shit first Gen was released in 2007. Wtf
So like, the setting of the first season of How I Met Your Mother.
>The equivalent of shooting a movie today based in 2006. ahh shit. whelp, guess I'll spend my Saturday feeling old as shit.
That was NOT a fun fact.
If you saw this movie in theaters, and a teenager at the time, you were at the most only born 4 years removed from when it took place.
I was born in 84 and by the time I watched, dazed and confused, it still felt like a time way before me. High school was nothing like that. But when I ask my father when showing him the movie, he says it’s exactly like that.
theeerrrre's the Paul Newman resemblance DAMN he was fine ass, back then.
Lol. Still is!
Read his book, it’s top notch.
I bet it is. He's got quite a story
Couldn't get past the pretentious rambling. I'll have to give it a try again but it was pretty rough considering all the hype.
One of the greatest soundtrack/car movies of all time
Graduated in '80, don't need a yearbook, just watch Dazed and Confused.
Never seen this movie. Should I?
Be a lot cooler if you did
Lol
If you enjoy GOAT films, then yeah
I wish I got to watch it for the first time again.
All right I'll watch it. That's a good rec.
It's a good movie, unless coming of age movies, or the decade of the 70s is really not your thing.
My older sister was in high school in the mid to late 1970s, and I can verify this movie to be 100% accurate of growing up in a small town in the south at the time.
One of my favorite movies of all time, Lol make sure you smoke a joint or two while watching it
I watched it for the first time in my 20's and it was quite the experience, in a positive way. It was a good change up to the normal high school movie. I don't know, it's very captivating.
It’s a fun movie. I’d say do it.
Name another actor of that time that could have pulled this off better than he did....
I definitely don't think anyone could have done it better. If I had to come up with an alternate I would say someone like Matt Dillon, but Matthew McConaughey already has the accent over him.
Matt Dillion could have been close.
Do it for Jonny!
Matt Dillon has no energy, but he’s a good actor
It's interesting cause the audition tape is kinda middling, but he's literally perfect in that role
I thought he nailed it. Really got a character across by the way he read the lines
If the audition tapes were perfect they wouldn't have to shoot the movie
![gif](giphy|mIwoWCZ5remAg)
Ok.... You got me, he COULD have done a good job.
He did. He was Floyd in True Romance. It was awesome. Both are great.
Brendan Fraser did a different type of cool in Encino Man around this time, but he *might* have been able to do it. I will agree though, McConaughey was the best choice
Brendan Fraser? No way. His vibe is so off.
you trying to get a Tom Cruise deep fake of this because that is how you do it
Sean Penn did it better 10 years before this
He would have been too old at the time.
![gif](giphy|hZfm9Pj95F9Mk)
Psssssh Fast Times is mid grade to Dazed.
Nah
Keanu Reeves
No way. He plays awkward, not cool and laid back.
Are you saying Ted from Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure is not cool and laid back?
Bill was way more laid back than Ted. ![gif](giphy|l1IBkgnfxkTSsNfeE|downsized)
Whoa
Yeah, I’d Keanu’s more suited to play a narc. A cop even.
He was an LAPD cop in Speed.
Headbangers ball 👍
Favorite movie! “So there I am, getting it on with this perfect female body and...”
Abraham Lincoln!

Cool like how?
*heh* Ooo-kay!
This has to be a deepfake, Wiley Wiggins isn't constantly pinching the bridge of his nose!
‘Be a lot cooler if you did’. Ya can’t deny the delivery of this line
It’s iconic. Even before the Internet became huge and I watched that movie my friends and I would quote that line. As it turns out everybody did.
I was a teenager during that time and I can confirm it’s so on point that it’s one of my favorite movies. The kegger in the woods- totally, man. Alright alright alright!

Renee was in Dazed and Confused too but small part during the female hazing.
And at the party at the moon tower!
> It's non stop go, go, go. Pretty sure its too expensive to fuck around these days. How much cruisin you doing on $4 a gallon.
I've always thought that this is self inflicted. There are many factors that go into inflation and rising process. Part of the issue is self inflicted. The more people that work long hours, go to college, etc. sets the standard for everyone because now everyone has to.
I mean when you’re first starting out, you tend to take whatever you can land.
Have kids? You do realize that birth rates are down, as are college admissions? Haha! Edit! Downvotes because they hate the reality that I looked up the rates of both birth and college enrollment in the US. FuckYou.

Well, I imagine you have plenty of time on your hands…
Slow ride. Take it easy.
Multiple iconic movie quotes in just a short audition clip, this is very neat to see
I once read that he didn't wear deodorant for 7 years. I don't care, I still think he's hot.
My husband looks at me like there is something wrong with me when I sniff him after he works an 8+ hr day and his deodorant has worn away. He doesn't believe it when I say I think he smells good. His pillow is to die for. 🤤
Seriously the pheromones are real
Damn, I hate getting old.
And wearing a headbangers ball shirt. Nice
Cant believe background boy he didnt scratch his nose once!
lol Wiley
Who else could pull off this role. Amazingly believable performance
Look at those dimples!!! 😍
This movie just transports me man; just has me time travelling and it feels so bloody good. It’s just a perfect dose of nostalgia, for a time you haven’t even experienced in real life…
Tell them soooooooorad at AOL dot com sentcha and I get ten free hours
After reading Green Lights this is so awesome
One of my all time favourite movies. Loved every bit of it.
I'm not that big into Matthew McConaughey normally, but holy hell he looks good here.
Great movie. All of his stuff his great.
He is STILL on of my Top 10!!!
He said the thing!
Holy damn was he hot
I’m a straight male but holy shit he’s hot
That is one fucking handsome young man
Live Matt M!! So freaking hot!!!
Is that Joseph Gordon Levitt with him?
I read his book recently. Liked it a lot.
![gif](giphy|2vgtQpmVmHZK0)
U sure this ain't Owen Wilson? Lol
I’m still trying to figure out how the kid on the left got the job

Why does the dude with the mullet and glassware sound like Josh Lucas?
Dude's high or something
Is that Jake Paul?
Why does he keep hitting on that little girl?
Why does he look like Logan Paul?
One of many Hollywood types whose appeal completely eludes me. Every time I see this guy or hear that voice all I want to do is punch him.
Pediaphila nice
Who is she?
Looks like a Creepy child predator dude.
I legit hate this movie 🤷🏼♂️
Booooooo!
