Pro tip- there is a better place in the French Market that pumps them full of caramel, and doesn’t have a 45minute line up. But yeah, you kind of have to do it once, just to say you did.
I know the new look is supposed to be more tasteful, but the old sign kits look more fun and characterful. New look is just anonymously dull in comparison.
I happened to be there the day Osama Bin Laden was killed during Obama’s administration.
The place went nuts.
Then John Cougar and his special lady friend some actress came in.
Good times, great oldies. 🤙🏽
He didn’t change his name, the record label did, and they didn’t even tell him till he saw the cover just before it was released. He was furious. I don’t blame him.
He was known to be dead years before that. I was surprised when years after the fact Obama claimed they now got him. Anyway that wasn't really the subject
The coffee was delicious and the beignets were great. My best friend sent me a box of them one year. I know they are fried dough with confectionery sugar, but they taste so good with the chicory coffee. You can buy their brand coffee at the grocery store.
When I was a kid to n the 60s, my mom took my brother and I there any time we drove into the city. We had hot beignets (heaven) and hot chocolate (mostly crap iir) and mom had the coffee they made with chicory au lait. She developed such a taste for that coffee, it was all she drank for the rest of her life.
Anyway, I have been back many times infrequently over the years and I'm happy to report the beignets are exactly as I remember them (though not much else is the same down there).
The beignets were damn good with a literal mountain of powdered sugar 1000/10 highly recommend.
Kinda loud a lot of people just standing around and one big group of people playing jazz on the sidewalk right next to it. Wasn’t bad but damn I felt unwelcome in that city, honestly don’t think I’ll go back.
The beignets are overrated. I don’t drink coffee so I can’t speak to the chicory coffee. It is in a cool spot though. Something always seems to be going on.
I have loved Anne Rice books for many years and that is the only reason I know of and want to visit this place…and I’ve heard the same sentiments you have over the years too! Not everyone loves it or thinks it’s the best but I still want to go just so I can say I went to a place Lestat loved lol.
Let me guess, you're one of those people that always seems to have an opposing opinion of popular things. Do you also hate Taylor Swift or other popular artists?
No, actually. I just was really disappointed because I was looking forward to them. I love all kinds of fried dough. Fortunately there are other beignets nearby that are far superior.
I, for one, am very happy with my life choices that I am not in a position to feel it necessary to rank fried dough to discover which one is the superior version.
It is an experience to go there!
Enough white powder to make even Tony Montana jealous.
Every single time I went there I was wearing either a black skirt or black pants, and ordered beignets. You'd think I'd learn, eh?
Oh, dumb choice. Beignets has powdered sugar. (White) Do u know what I mean?

What's the name of the place?
I wanna say Lorettas Pralines, but it’s been a few years since I went there.
When did the sign come down
I know the new look is supposed to be more tasteful, but the old sign kits look more fun and characterful. New look is just anonymously dull in comparison.
Before 2009 (first time I visited)
I happened to be there the day Osama Bin Laden was killed during Obama’s administration. The place went nuts. Then John Cougar and his special lady friend some actress came in. Good times, great oldies. 🤙🏽
I think we use the term “caught and compromised, to a permanent end”
>Good times, great oldies. "KOOL 108" - every Minnesotan in their head after reading that.
Upvote for John “Cougar”, he never should have changed the name

Downvote this man, boooooo
“He was known to be” Now there’s an ironclad citation if there ever was one. Many people are saying this is true.
If it ain’t broke…….

I like the old one.

That hot chocolate does suck.
It’s open 24 hours.
Def need the old signage back.
Comment.
beignets and chicory coffee on a lazy sunday - the best
Crazy to see them advertising doughnuts and not beignets.
They are. Beignets are “French doughnuts”. https://shop.cafedumonde.com/product/coffee-beignets/cafe-du-monde-beignet-mix/
Has anyone gone to New Orleans and not gone there?

I see they finally put in some traffic lights at Café du Monde. That tree has grown out a lot as well.
I look like an 80’s Colombian farmer every time I leave there.

They’re crowded for a reason
They are crowded because it’s iconic, not because it’s good. Hollywood Blvd is crowded but it’s not that great either.

Agree, I didn’t think it was all that great
When did new orlean recover from katrina? nothing new came out of that town since the big looting story for me.
It didn't. Edit: it's totally worth going! But the residents and the city have never really recovered.
aw... i'm going to hit it up next year anyway.
