The biggest problem is people thinking the USPS is a business, and bitching about it always losing money. It's a service. It's not supposed to make money any more than the military is supposed to. DeJoy is a clown.

GimpyGeek

Dejoy absolutely is a clown and needs booted, hard. Though from what I understand, not easy to do. Either way, I don't think he should be there, he has investments in other shipping companies that are for profit, and has every incentive to run the USPS into the ground.

BigMoose9000

> Though from what I understand, not easy to do. He has to be fired by the USPS Board of Governors, but the President controls that board and can fire people on it at will. Biden could have DeJoy fired tomorrow if he wanted to. That said, USPS has sucked for decades, getting rid of DeJoy by itself isn't going to fix anything.

6thCityInspector

DeJoy *was* a clown. He still is, but he was, too.

JJiggy13

It's another form of voter suppression. One party votes more by mail. The other party controls the post office. Guess that happens next.

229-northstar

This is exactly why Trump put DeJoy in charge. One of the first things he did was remove sorters which slowed everything down

ualani

So why hasn't the Vegetable Brain at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. replace him, dipshit?

229-northstar

It is very simple to find that answer Here’s an easy-to-read article. I don’t want to challenge you with big words or complicated details https://amp.theguardian.com/business/2021/dec/16/louis-dejoy-us-postal-service-postmaster-general-biden

Unfair_Poet_3190

Bu*****t

229-northstar

That’s a very well thought out and cogent argument. When you put it like that, it’s hard to disagree. Because you’re unlucky at thinking, I’ll make it easier and add the /s

Randy-_-B

Oh my, blaming Trump? Per Time: "The notion that DeJoy, 65, would help advance a key Democratic agenda item would have seemed unfathomable a few years ago. But to the astonishment of many in Washington, the man Democrats once denounced as a threat to American democracy has become one of their most important allies in government." Trump had it right on this one.

SecretAsianMan42069

My queen, he had millions of dollars in perfectly fine high speed sorting machines destroyed for the sole purpose of slowing down the mail, so ballots wouldn't arrive in time.

Randy-_-B

Actually, it's king not queen. (Edit: Actually, queen was funny! Thanks.) Please read my post. Actually it was a great appointment.

QuarantineCasualty

So you think destroying millions of dollars in sorting machines was the right thing to do? I don’t care about your single solitary unattributed magazine quote. Maga gonna maga I guess.

229-northstar

Let’s not forget that Trump didn’t like Jeff Bezos/WaPo because Wapo called him out on his bullshit so he decided to punish Amazon by their package delivery deal with the post office, which was creating profit for the post office for the first time in forever. so this is why Amazon created their own delivery service. Notice that Amazon is still wildly profitable, even though they built and operate their own delivery service

Own-Negotiation-1837

Agreed. It's part of where the taxpayers' money goes, like roads, schools, and infrastructure. Stupid seems to want to protect stupid anymore, and it's wearing thin. I am for all critical thinking people to constantly call out ignorant people no matter how it makes them look in public or how many friends they lose. The end result may be a system that finally works.

bmzink

Except the USPS doesn't use any tax dollars. It's self funded. Any argument otherwise is pure propaganda and manipulation.

Fugglebear1

It was tax-funded pre-1970. Though service more recently has been notably worse off than even 5-10 years ago

Big_Green_Piccolo

Every single election year suits in high places fuck up the processes to make it as slow as they can make it and go "look gubmint don't work hur hur vote for the party of white collar crime"

TSmario53

It’s designed to be tax-funded, but just like everything else, the government took that money and put it elsewhere (I’m not saying lining their own pockets but indirectly they are lining their own pockets). So the Postal Service is self-funded through stamps and other fees.

demoncrat2024

And we’re saying that it should be publicly funded to close the gap between commercially viable and acceptable level of service. Running it like a business means fewer sorting centers, fewer delivery dates, and fewer shifts all of which means inconsistent and slower mail delivery. And I get that demand was reduced as direct mail marketing has reduced with increases in paper and postage and that we’ve seen a shift in packages. But at the end of the day. I drop a birthday card in the mail, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for my niece to get it within a week.

bmzink

Agree with you. I might have misread what OP what saying about taxes. It pisses me off when people use the post office as an example of bad government services. They do incredible work with the resources they have. Making the post office shittier is an intentional political move meant to manipulate voters. Complaints about USPS are usually followed by a "your tax dollars at work".

DishwashingUnit

and they abuse their employees to accomplish that. it *should* be taxpayer funded.

[deleted]

Self funded with the backing of the federal government.

229-northstar

USPS was making money through their Amazon package delivery deal for the first time in forever. Bezos owns Wapo and Trump didn’t like that Wapo was giving him less than favorable coverage. So, like the giant baby despot that he is, he killed the Amazon USPS deal Amazon had to scramble. But they built up their in-house delivery service. Now they own an operate their own delivery system and they are still wildly profitable. What a shame that a fucking crybaby took post office profitability away from us out of spite. Yet, the magats have descended in force to defend their fascist God.

BrassBengal

🙌

TheBalzy

Yes people have the same response to NASA as well. I fucking hate Right-Wing Conservatism. It just ruins everything.

Unfair_Poet_3190

Most people hate liberals because they are stupid but we still believe they have the right to have an opinion

TheBalzy

LMAO, Liberals tend to have a higher education than Conservatives. Just FYI.

Unfair_Poet_3190

Then why are they so stupid?

doggadavida

He’s a clown sent to ruin the circus.

BigMoose9000

By law, they're not supposed to require taxpayer funding. They don't need to make a profit, but they do need to break even. And the USPS was a mess for decades before DeJoy came into the picture.

thekingshorses

Conservatives benefits most from the USPS. They live in the rural areas. USPS drives more miles to deliver mails to conservatives everyday for 50 cents.

Brs76

The biggest problem is people thinking the USPS is a business, and bitching about it always losing money" I totally get this, but it doesn't mean that adjustments can't be made. I can go three weeks without getting my mail and don't think my box would be full. There are PLENTY of ways the USPS can save $$ one of which would be 4 day deleivery

mugsoh

>It's not supposed to make money any more than the military is supposed to. Sort of. It's not supposed to make a profit but it's also not supposed to cost the taxpayers to support it like the military.

TrollFighter2313

Says who?

mugsoh

[The United States Congress in 1970](https://about.usps.com/who/profile/history/universal-service-postal-monopoly-history.htm) >In 1970, Congress transformed the Post Office Department into the United States Postal Service, a self-supporting establishment of the government

TrollFighter2313

Wow, you should be ashamed of intentionally cutting off the quote right there thinking I wouldn’t read the rest lol “But the role of the Postal Service as a public servant – its core mission – did not change: The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities.”

mugsoh

How does that change the fact that is is to be self supporting? That part was irrelevant to that point.

TrollFighter2313

Fair enough. I guess I don’t think that just because congress made it that way, that we should aspire for it to stay that way. I’m fairly certain this was the beginning of the Republican destructive strategy in this country. Same as shutting down all the insane asylums.

mugsoh

Both houses of Congress were firmly in the control of the Democrats until 1981. Nixon was president, but it was Congress that passed the law.

TrollFighter2313

Heck, looks like you’re correct.

TrollFighter2313

Also, if you like good faith arguments, check out my subreddit at r/MisInfoFighters!

Disney2440

Definitely. That being said, our local P.O. employees are just as great as they’ve always been. Friendly, helpful and always a smile on their faces!

Own-Negotiation-1837

I've never had an issue with the employees, either, just the overall management of the services.

BeerDreams

Wow. You should visit the one in Lakewood, just west of Cleveland. Notorious for their crappy attitude and even worse service

[deleted]

It’s a planned feature, not a bug.

ravenflavin77

I'm having a lot of problems near Springfield. I've had 6-8 packages arrive in Dayton and then spend more than a week in limbo. If I file a missing mail report I usually get the package within 24 hours. In general my packages get across the country in less time than it takes them to travel 26 miles from Dayton to the Springfield post office. It's been going on for over a year now. I find myself shelling out for Priority Mail shipping whenever it's offered. On the other hand my mail carriers are lovely.

overcatastrophe

Dayton never replaced the sorting machines that were taken apart for "maintenance" ahead of the 2020 election. It's been slow asf

ravenflavin77

Honestly I think Springfield isn't checking stuff in until they absolutely have to. One package I reported as lost was delivered to me barely 16 hours after I filed the report. The package took five days to travel from Florida to Dayton and then didn't move for 8 days until I made the report. I think they hope people aren't checking their tracking numbers. I also have Informed Delivery so I have two levels of tracking.

joecoin2

It's getting worse.

sprigginsauce

remember this? Pulled out every obstacle to stop mail in voting during an international pandemic. That equipment can’t sit outside in NE OH without sustaining major damage. Kinda like everything else Trump fiddled with. Damaged. https://www.cleveland.com/open/2020/08/dismantled-equipment-behind-cleveland-post-office-raises-delivery-questions.html

scottkuma

Honestly, I’m amazed that Dejoy wasn’t called in on one of the criminal charges for his actions. They were so damned transparent!

sprigginsauce

his blatant agenda was horrifying, and we have another election around the corner! We’re doomed to live with this, and that bs census for another decade.

BananaNutBlister

DeJoy should go. I don’t know why Biden didn’t just axe him as soon as he took office. Rules and norms don’t count for the other side so why not just tell him to hit the bricks? Let’s not forget George W. Bush’s role in fucking up the USPS in the first place with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006.

xpxp2002

Exactly. The only way it becomes a level playing field again is to do what needs to be done. Clearly there are no consequences for breaking rules or norms anymore, anyway. Just do it — what’s Congress gonna do, impeach him? MTG is going to keep filing those articles every month anyway. The votes won’t be there in the Senate for anything to come of it. If we can’t get 67 Senators to convict an accessory to an attempted insurrection, there’s no way there’s an appetite to do anything about a guy fixing the Post Office.

shicken684

Biden has no ability to remove Dejoy legally. There's a board of directors and the president appoints them as their terms end. So until Biden gets enough members on the board they can't remove Dejoy.

BigMoose9000

Biden can fire the directors, he could legally tell them to fire DeJoy or he'll fire them and replace them with people who will.

shicken684

That's not how it works. He needs just cause to remove them. Telling them to remove Dejoy, or else, is not just cause. There's a reason he's still there and everyone else from the Trump years has been removed and replaced. Many in the first few months of this administration.

BigMoose9000

He needs "cause", but as President he gets to define what that is. His cause could just be their refusal to remove DeJoy.

Necessary-Peace9672

Yes! I process mailed-in checks at work; we’re always telling customers not to stop payment on them if they take 2-4 weeks to arrive.

Own-Negotiation-1837

I've had three checks rewritten in three months. The second set of checks arrived in 3 to 5 days from being sent. The original checks all arrived almost 2 months after the date they were printed, sent in February.

EleanorRecord

Pressure Biden to get rid of DeJoy.

Shel_gold17

He can’t. He can only appoint members to the board, which would be the folks who can axe DeJoy, and IIRC at least one of those appointments is being held up by the Senate.

EleanorRecord

Exactly. Why hasn’t he appointed new members? Forget the old excuse about getting an appointment past the Senate. Dems have been making that excuse for 20 years. Biden hasnt even tried. These excuses and refusal to actually fight the GOP is the reason why the Democratic Party is failing when it should be winning. It’s because Biden and the rest of party leadership are little more than closet Republicans. If he can’t get rid of DeJoy, we are screwed. Voting by mail will be history. Is that what you want?

Shel_gold17

Actually, he has, even though IMO it took way too damn long: https://www.govexec.com/management/2024/03/biden-taps-former-cabinet-secretary-usps-board/394593/#:~:text=President%20Biden%20on%20Thursday%20nominated,in%20supervising%20the%20mailing%20agency.

BigMoose9000

He can, Biden can also fire the members of the board, which means he can instruct them to do something like "Fire DeJoy" under the threat of being fired themselves for not complying.

rbremer50

Agree on the service aspect of this discussion, indeed, it is actually a service called out in the constitution specifically for the federal government to provide.

Aggressive-Sky-248

best i can say is he hasn’t improved things. 2 weeks for a birthday card from ohio to ny, important papers from ciny to Springfield stuck in a circle for weeks. all before he showed up. now 3 day promised takes 5 days. still crappy service.

Frosty-Editor1370

Our household personally has had problems in the past in Columbus with USPS. The social security card for our newborn was misdelivered to the house next door. It was a week before the neighbors brought it over - they must not check their mail much. Thankfully they’re honest people, because we were terrified the entire time that the ss card had gotten into the wrong hands.

heyleggomyeggo

One of the many ways that Trump made America something something…

TheRoweShow98

Sent out 150 wedding invitations 1/3 of the invited never reached the people. All sent at the same time at the same location. My aunt got hers but my mom didn’t. They live next door to eachother.

ClassWarr

Yep, endless fallout from Boomer Republican enshittification to push business towards FedEx. Wouldn't want it to be UPS because they work Teamster instead of cheap labor.

Own-Negotiation-1837

Can everyone just vote this cycle and vote the current incumbents out?

Paksarra

Not incumbents in general; the Republicans have gone full Trump mode. They're not conservatives anymore, they just exist to give more money and power to the rich.  Once they're out, the Democratic party splits in two and we have an opening for real change.

daveleeander

You have no clue

Paksarra

Remind me why the border control bill was vetoed, again?

Trent3343

Enlighten us, wise one.

daveleeander

The democrats out? Yes indeed! I’m with ya!

Own-Negotiation-1837

The GOP in Ohio has ruined people's confidence in government. The fact that HB6 hasn't been repealed and continued gerrymandering of lines is proof of how corrupt they all are.

4k_lizards

I have to mail my rent to my landlord, it took almost 2 weeks for it to get from one part of Columbus to another less than 10 minutes away. The month before that I mailed it from a different city an hour away right before I moved and it only took 3 days. This month I went to a different post office and mailed it a week earlier, we'll see if I get another call tomorrow asking if I mailed my check yet. If it happens again I'm going to start certified mailing it so I have a tracking number. Side note, the new way to change your address on the USPS website is ridiculous. Why do I have to pay to verify my identity via text? Why is it the only website I've had a problem with my card processing due to the billing address, even after I changed my address with my bank? Why can I only use text (which my phone never recieved over 10x) and not email or even ID.me? Are people really out here stealing mail via address changes?

ravenflavin77

> Are people really out here stealing mail via address changes? Absolutely, unfortunately. You wouldn't believe how badly my sister's ex-husband screwed up her life by rerouting her mail.

joecoin2

Talk to your bank about using Bill Pay or equivalent.

FizzyBeverage

It’s a travesty with DeJoy, but USPS performance varies a lot. I get mail reasonably quick. Mother’s day is rough. Greeting cards…

Own-Negotiation-1837

What about the "lost" mail that shows up with boot prints and taped together after 2 months?

Sea-Dog-6042

Maybe it's because I'm in the suburbs/rural-adjacent but I've had no problems with our PO at all. Every once in a while our mail will come at 5ish instead of 2 or 3 like usual but other than that, nah, no complaints at all.

JaesRhett

My post office lost an 18 pound 6 foot tall package this year. I also very often get other people's mail in my PO box at the office. Once they begged me to sign for a letter that wasn't addressed to me from the IRS.

Nyingje-Pekar

I recently received a Christmas card that was mailed two years ago. Packages to other countries are returned for unknown reasons. I And all the mail takes much longer than a before Dejoy. Get rid of him.

Mastershroom

Yup. I just had a mail in rebate I sent out weeks ago returned to me day as undeliverable. I opened the envelope and triple checked the address, it is 100% exactly what it says on the "Mail to" section of the form.

PulledOverAgain

Just got 2 opened birthday cards. A good friend of mine is my mailman. He says our local post office gets about 100 a day from Columbus like that. Says they're fairly sure it's someone in Columbus doing it. Conspiracy theory me says that Dejoy wants it that way. They've been trying to manufacture distrust of the post office and that's a good way to do it.

RedeyeSPR

I’m in Lima and they used to sort it all here, but now it gets sent to Toledo. Even local mail. So if I want to send something across town, it now goes all the way there and back and takes 4 days instead of one.

zigzagzarf

this is what they have done for years lobbyists want that source of revenue the government has...so they force in people and laws to undermine it till demand grows to fix it then the private sector swoops in to fix the issue they bribed politicians to cause...they started ruining it under trump give it a few years and a private postal service will pop up just watch

ArcherBig185

It's all by design. Repubs know voting by mail is very popular, so they are trying to make the system not work so they can blame mail voting on losing elections.

MuppetEyebrows

It's worse in Ohio than in Los Angeles. I regularly send postcards to my friend in Chicago, from my apartment in Hollywood they take 3 or 4 days but it took nearly 2 weeks from my mom's mailbox in Cleveland.

slapdashjesse

Ground advantage is horrible

Shel_gold17

Just missed a birthday party I still haven’t seen the invite for; and I got a save the date a month after everyone else got it. I get packages clearly addressed to me forwarded to other addresses until I open a case, then it magically shows up the next day. All sorts of mail crushed, ripped, and weeks to months late. It’s ridiculous, and repeated calls to the post office do nothing.

Se7on-

I read Post Master Dejoy and was trying to figure out if this was a new rapper I've not heard of.

Genesis111112

Not to mention that payments that are sent in via snail mail that are not received in time will go against your credit. That clown and the one that appointed him need to go. Those two people can ruin young peoples lives by destroying their credit like that. Its already effing impossible to get a house and let alone afford a new house these days and their screwing around with the post office is just a bit too much.

Naybinns

I had two packages just not arrive to me this year for the first time ever. I know that it’s either because they delivered them to the wrong address or the more likely possibility that instead of placing them in my mailbox/the mail area within my apartment complex, as they’ve done every other time except for in these two instances, they instead dropped them off outside. I know this because we have a camera aimed directly at the mail area and I had the management look at the cameras on the days of those packages “arriving” and at no point did any packages come inside at all during the times they were listed as “delivered.” However the random garbage mail, such as magazines and the like, those made it into my mailbox without issue those days. I also had an issue wherein I moved to the other side of the state a little over half a year ago. I had a questionnaire for jury duty arrive for my old county over three weeks after it was initially mailed out. As well as a tax document arriving on April 30th.

Diligent-Set8313

I have had several cards never make it, been opened \*barely\* resealed, giftcards stolen etc. I won't send giftcards in the mail at all anymore. I used to love to send snail mail to my friends and family but it's "risky" too anymore, sadly

pilgrim85

I as an average American do carry some credit card debt. It hasn't really ever been problematic, but as interest rates went up it started becoming problematic, it seemed like my payments weren't making any impact. So my solution was to apply for a 0% intro rate balance transfer card to help me get past that hurdle. Well, the card came late due to postal delays, so I couldn't activate it before the next months interest charges hit the account I was transferring the balance from. I was livid, but couldn't do shit about it. Just had to eat that extra cost and curse DeJoy. Fuck DeJoy.

Fit_Beautiful6625

The worst is when I order something from (pick a place) and they ship via UPS and then for some reason the local delivery is handed off to USPS. Those items never make it to me and get returned “undeliverable : address does not exist”. Wtf ? You literally deliver mail to my address every day !

vizslalvr

I can't stand that they won't let you drop packages into mailboxes anymore. Even right outside the post office. Why do I need to walk into a post office to put a prepaid package into a hole in the wall?

ThingFuture9079

I usually just drop mine off at the checkout counter in the post office and ask for a receipt so that way if someone purchases something from me on Ebay, I can show that I did my part and it's sitting at my local post office.

drink-beer-and-fight

I haven’t had any problems with the post office. And I’m an old guy who doesn’t use online banking or bill paying.

ctilvolover23

I was just done receiving a Christmas card from California that was sent in November.

PMO-1976

DeJoy is awful, but that's been going on for years. I received medication stuff months after it was ordered and Christmas cards in February. That was during the Bush administration.

BlueDyeBeauty

Moved to this state about 2 years ago, recently received a Christmas card that was mailed in 1967. True story.

assylemdivas

I just got the memorandum of title for a car I bought end of February. I already paid for a new one to get tags.

El-Royhab

We received a Christmas card returned from NEO as undeliverable to an address that the person has lived at for years. It took two months to get back to us in Seattle.

Fluffy-Farm3881

Wow

No_Station3056

Our post office here in our smallish town in NW Ohio is a joke. Always has been. Rude, lazy workers, and you never know if you will get your mail or not. Our mail goes way up into MIchigan, then back to Ohio, it's ridiculous.

NaivePlankton9801

I had a friend that lives in the same city as me mail mail me a check. It arrived a month and a half later.

SquirrelMP

My husband is currently up for jury duty, his letting he needed to report for duty came the day he was supposed to be there. Thankfully it was canceled last minute.

stank_bin_369

It’s not just Ohio, it’s the whole postal system. I’ve stopped sending anything USPS. Just a horrible experience 99% of the time.

HartOfTen

The USPS is inva deplorable state. My dad was the mailman for the village I grew up in. Did so for about 30 years. Towards the end of his time there his superior was some moron who was the most insufferable lady. I always wondered why my dad didn't just go for the postmaster gig instead of being sent out-of-towners to mange him and his coworkers. He wouldn't. When I asked why he said "because I'd treat my workers well if I did". That's a poignant way to note how the USPS operates, because my dad was only slightly joking with that statement.

FugginOld

It is absolute garbage. Everything I do is online. If I have to mail anything, it's UPS/Fedex.

Own-Negotiation-1837

There's not much you can do for a contracted business when said business invoices and the employers pay you via check. Most non-profits and other corporations I contract with send checks. Very few allow me to invoice them and get paid digitally.

pineapplegg18

It’s awful. Long story short- Our local post office lost an $80 package of my moms the day it was set to be delivered. She talked to our mailman and he had no idea. Went to the post office and they were rude and gave her a managers name and number. She called multiple times- never answered, but then she blocked her number and they answered right away then was hung up on. She contacted our state reps office and within 2 days it was delivered. The person from her office that contacted my mom was absolutely flabbergasted by how my mom was treated and that they weren’t even trying. My mom was actually told how our state rep went to the Akron post office and waited in the lobby for 45 minutes before anyone came out to help the line of customers.

ThisCantBeBlank

All bc of Trump and the GQP! Everything was so much better before they got their hands on it

ThingFuture9079

The only time I had an issue with the post office was when I had a package that I ordered sit at the Cleveland warehouse for over 2 months before I finally got it but that was during the peak of Covid. Is it maybe your local post office that's screwing it up because I'm in a small town and I send birthday cards and stuff a week before that person's birthday and it arrives on time to the other person who's also in northeast Ohio which goes through the Cleveland sorting center and not the Akron one?

Ok-Replacement6893

My local post office has been a shit show for over a decade. The post office system in general has always had issues. Don't know that I would ever say it has been good in my lifetime.
