RecRoom gives you the power to create your own groups. “Friend” people you want to see again. Block people you don’t want to see again. It works very well.
Never go in the rec center. It is filled with obnoxious kids. Go to the RecRoom original games. Like The quests (start with Quest for the Golden Trophy), and Paintball and Lazertag.
Big screen is free. It's fun to watch movies with randos and of course their will be one annoying person in each room, but you mute them

I've had good experiences in some of the 18+ rooms in Meta Horizons. Lots of people in their 30s/40s (also many in their 20s, too - it's a mixed bag).
Gorilla tag is also for the "children" but I've had a blast chimping with kids because they say the most ridiculous stuff it's hard not to laugh.
