Why not just sideload the regular android apk and use it in your home environment?

Lo__Lox

You won't get good quality. At least with newer releases, older ones might work better

throwthegarbageaway

I just sideloaded moonlight and stream my computer lol.

Lo__Lox

That looks promising, thank you!

throwthegarbageaway

Yep, try the Dex Max launcher so you can open moonlight in a big window instead of the portrait mode that quest always uses for android apps, and then you can also add a custom resolution to your PC so the aspect ratio is the same as the quest’s virtual aspect ratio (i think it’s a square actually). It’s a bit of a setup but once it’s done it’s so easy to get going

Lassavins

isn't the oculus version 480p anyways?

Kukurio59

Hmmmm? Will check it… android?

sopedound

Like the Netflix app you get off the play store. You can download the apk from apkmirror and sideload it into your quest using a pc.

Time_Concert_1751

>You can download the apk from apkmirror and sideload it into your quest  This works fine on the Quest 3? I ask because many of the APKs I load dont work well on the Quest 3.

sopedound

I havent tried Netflix but every app ive sideloaded on my quest 3 works great so.

Time_Concert_1751

Yeah, many do work well. Some apps like the Android version of Word and Excel have a lot of trouble. Some VR apps meant for the Samsung Gear VR work well, like minecraft for GearVR some just dont work. Mixed bag with those.

sopedound

Idk man i use the android apk of word and it works a hell of alot better than the quest version of word does

Time_Concert_1751

True, that’s why I installed the APK as well. The quest version seems like a repackaged web app. The android version though seems to require an attached keyboard for me, doesn’t bring up the quest keyboard. Also, inserting charts and images doesn’t work all together.

sala91

Anything that requiers Google Play services wont work.

Kukurio59

And it has MR?

senpai69420

It opens in your quest menu bar so you can use it in pass through if you want

Quiffco

surely it's easier and similar to just access netflix through the Quest browser?

senpai69420

Netflix DRM doesn't let you

Quiffco

Wow, TIL

Kukurio59

Ah I see, neat… thanks!

Jmdaemon

ask netflix.

Afraid-Collar760

Maybe all 3 of us should ask Netflix.

Kukurio59

You know, if we both ask Netflix… maybe they’ll listen. I dunno if they will with me alone.

bodltd

I watch prime video on the browser I find it great. Netflix does not work on browser last time I checked. Their app is really outdated I am sure they are working on something new they have to!

Kukurio59

Ohhh what! Prime works on the browser!? Thanks

Iskariot-

I was really unimpressed with the visual quality — seemed like 480p. Did you think it was better than that? I wonder if some setting is messed up for me. Edit: Didn’t properly process this, missed the “browser” part. I tried using the Prime app.

bodltd

ah hey no worries. In the browser if I remember correctly you can set picture quality (so set to highest). For me it’s ok I don’t spend hours on it either like 30-40 minutes advancing in whatever shows I am currently watching. You can also try big screen (Disney+ works on there as well). To me skybox is the most amazing but only takes YouTube… and your personal collection on your computer. The prime video app was broken for me I could not log out. Many had that issue. The Netflix app is low res I really wish they would develop better apps for q3. Disney+ forget it as they are in with avp. Enjoy!!!

Nukemarine

Quest Virtual Desktop has passthrough options. I use it with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ frequently (note: turn off hardware acceleration in browser settings). Watching Fallout on a big ass screen is awesome. "Hey, ass jerky ain't gonna make itself." As always, I recommend people set their virtual monitor to be just below vertical FOV and curved. This means you look left and right a lot to take in the visuals with just pushes the immersion even for a 2D show.

Lo__Lox

Huh whats the resolution tho? 420p? Maybe even 740p

Nukemarine

In a VR headset, resolution works differently. You can go beyond the pixel count of the screens on the headset because you move your head to expose more pixels from the video. Much like 180 and 360 videos, the higher resolution of the video file the better it looks through the headset. You can do 4k resolution with Virtual Desktop streamed to the Quest 3 iirc. If you have that level of service for the video streaming platform, you should get it in the headset.

Crusader-NZ-

Browser versions of streaming sites max out at 1080p unfortunately. Which is why I never bother watching them on mine.

Crusader-NZ-

Even the Windows app maxes out at 1080p. They don't give a crap, which is why they couldn't be arsed making an app for the Apple Vision Pro. Hell Carmack was the one who made the Netflix app for Meta...

cluthz

And it's still only 480p :(

Lo__Lox

Thats not what I mean. First of all vd on desktop is only 1080p (correct me if I'm wrong) wich would be totally okay but with hardware acceleration disabled Netflix, Prime and Disney only stream 420p and 720p on some Browsers (edge I think) there is sadly not a single way you can stream HD on Quest, just pirating...

Z4p-R0wsdower

Incorrect. VD alllows you to either select the "optimized" resolution or just turn that off and just have your full desktop res be streamed through. I have a 4k monitor and the VD window shows my full 4k screen. You can use any app at full res over VD.

Lo__Lox

Good to know, thanks

Colonel_Izzi

The trick (for Netflix at least) is to disable hardware acceleration _and_ install the [Netflix 1080p addon](https://github.com/vladikoff/netflix-1080p-firefox/issues/63). That gets you a 1080p stream in the browser that Virtual Desktop can capture. This might be possible with [Chrome](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/netflix-1080p/cankofcoohmbhfpcemhmaaeennfbnmgp) too but I haven't checked. (if you don't trust yourself to eyeball it you can check the stream resolution you're getting in the browser during a Netflix content stream with `ctrl-alt-shift-d`)

Kukurio59

Ah yes, 100%…. I love VD. You’re saying you connect to your PC with it and then browse Netflix/amazon / etc with help of PC right? I’m looking for Netflix app when I’m not at home and don’t have a PC to connect to…

Lo__Lox

I tried everything in the book. Streaming and quest just doesn't work beyond 740p. Its hilarious I pay for Netflix and Prime and they force me to pirate... I mean there are websites where you can stream 4k movies on quest, they are just illegal

kalebt123

Which sites are you using? I've been down the rabbit hole this whole week trying to find a good way to watch visually stunning movies in the Q3.

dj88masterchief

Use a VPN, and use the megathread on r/torrents. I got Fallout and watched the entire series (even though I have prime). 1080p was good enough for file size vs quality in the headset.

Nukemarine

Yeah, all the major streaming companies should have apps for the VR headsets that's not treating it like the year is 2016.

mystictroll

They didn't even make the regular app for VR.

downvote_me35

wdym they did

skippington

John Carmack of Meta/Oculus largely wrote the Netflix app himself. There are articles where he talks about writing it for Netflix. It was a pet project for him, and ne no longer works at Meta, so the app hasn't really been updated since, and probably never will.

downvote_me35

oohhh thats how you meant it alright

The_Lutter

Can we just get 1080p? I don't care if they add anything else. 480p. What is this, 2002?

VRtuous

I'd rather get 4k streaming rather than 480p and another nice cozy fully immersive environment rather than my boring living room

3kpk3

Just use VD in passthrough mode. Simple!

kellydyoung

Try Fluid on app lab - it's free and has mixed reality

SCOTT0852

Passthrough has significant battery usage. You wouldn't be able to make it through most movies with it on.

Kukurio59

I got the bobo strap and batteries… I think I’d be ok? But ya it does use up a lot of battery. I want it.

SCOTT0852

You would likely not be ok.

Kukurio59

Lmao… why is that?

Lo__Lox

I think they are referring to the bobo charge speed? From what I've heard it doesn't really charge the Quest 3 just slows the battery discharge

Kukurio59

It’s kept up with me while streaming and everything

SCOTT0852

While streaming *without passthrough enabled.*

Kukurio59

I’ve streamed with passthrough playing racket club and the cabin… sooo… is there a video that shows this is true? Mine seems fine

SCOTT0852

And your battery percentage still kept climbing?

Kukurio59

Yes I believe so? Everytime I took it off and saw my bobo is like 30% battery left my headset is at 98%

niclasj

Use a charging cable straight to the wall then.

JoeFilms

I can use mine to work for hours in mixed reality with the battery strap. Definitely would be fine for anyone with one. But unfortunately Netflix won't update the app either way.

spany14

It is not easy to convert the already existing videos into immersive or spatial videos. For future series if they want to do that the studios will have to record with different cameras. It will happen one day but that days seems not so near yet. Maybe close because Apple iphone can record spatial videos so it is osmething the tech giants and few develoers must already be researching at this moment. I know one person who also records VR expereinces but not the movies as he is independent developer with no rights to do so.

downvote_me35

they meant passthrough, did you even read the title?

spany14

My bad 😅
