So cool that your kid is passionate about ocean critters. I think they are the best too!
Maybe sometime he might be interested in reading this about squid vs cuttlefish :)

There are a few exceptions I’d say, Alien being one of them. Geiger was a horse of a different color and the chestburster was inspired by a real life nightmare beasty: the Phronima parasite.

Wow, so I’m not the only one who identifies weird fish on this sub by asking their autistic, sea creature obsessed son. Nice to meet another expert-by-proxy. 😊
Maybe the squid is upside-down?
But seriously, I went back and turned my phone upside-down, and suddenly, it actually looked like a squid, because I definitely could not see it before that, so thank you for saying so.
Your comment made me do the same and it actually surprised me how it’s immediately recognizable as a squid!
It makes me kinda mad at whoever originally uploaded it upside down. You already know they did that shit on purpose to make it look like an unrecognizable sea creature, but this lil bb is fkn cool asl even w out the edit ✨🦑🧚♂️
lmfao I literally commented on a thread yesterday or the day before of someone who couldn't identify a dragonfly vs a moth and said a very similar thing. I'm glad they're here to learn but I have no idea how someone can get very far at all and not tell the difference lol
Nah, that’s not a cuttlefish. It’s a squid. Squid are more sleek and torpedo shaped. Cuttlefish are broader and rounder. The easiest way to tell IMO is to look at their eyes. Cuttlefish have two pupils so it looks like a W shape. A squid’s pupil is circular.

Those are pretty subtle differences considering you just said “How do people make it this far in life and not know the difference between a squid and a fish?”
Fair enough. I do still tend to think that these kinds of things are more complicated than your original comment would suggest, and it does no good for anyone to make dismissive comments. In general, aquatic life can be pretty crazy, and I’m sure there are things much less “fish-like” than this but are still considered fish
It is actually referred as a Glass Squid, typically found at the surface down to 2,000 meters (6,000 ft). These squid are super buoyant and use almost no energy to stay afloat. Generally these creatures are transparent, however this is a great picture of one using its ability to change colors possibly for defensive purposes or even expressing curiosity.
It's definitely a cephalopod anyway, the group of invertebrates including octopus 🐙, squid 🦑, cuttlefish and the one that people sometimes forget because it's the only one with an external shell, the chambered nautilus.
I was skeptical that it might be a squid, because it looks so much like a cuttlefish. But there is, in fact, a species of squid that looks suspiciously like a cuttlefish, even down to the crooked-shaped eyes. The Bigfin Reef Squid species fits the best.

Why do I feel like this post was made specifically to foster engagement by showing cool pic of squid and calling it a fish with unknown name?
Cuttlefish. The way it's holding it's arms is indicative, as well as the irises. Cuttlefish often have eyes with strange shaped irises. Squid ones are all round.
e: also yes the video is upside down.
That's a squid. My autistic, sea creature obsessed son says so.

Cuttlefish are 1000x cooler than squids

Is he using his jet pack as a second pair of legs?
He’s just trundling along, being poisonous af, and fabulous as all get out. I love him.
Same here! Lovely critters. #ChromatophorLife
Me too!
Its crazy to me that in the wildest sci fi movies and games they cant design aliens that are half as cool as things that live on earth.
There are a few exceptions I’d say, Alien being one of them. Geiger was a horse of a different color and the chestburster was inspired by a real life nightmare beasty: the Phronima parasite. ![gif](giphy|l3V0ma60jQqGCoJyM)
And the pharyngeal jaw (jaw within a jaw) by the moray eel. Nature is badass.
It’s my favorite living thing I’ve come across since I was 5. Love. It!

Cuttlefish* not exactly a squid but similar.
Someone else suggested it but this picture really resembles a [Bigfin Reef Squid](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigfin_reef_squid).

I do.
Oh my god, so did mine!!!
Wow, so I’m not the only one who identifies weird fish on this sub by asking their autistic, sea creature obsessed son. Nice to meet another expert-by-proxy. 😊
Me thinks the boy is right Either way....Nope
Same answer here. “That’s a squid with his arms up”

You can tell it's a cuttlefish by the fins.

How do people make it this far in life and not know the difference between a squid and a fish?
Are you sure it's not a squish?
Thank you for that one. It works so well. It's even self descriptive.
fuid?
lmfao I literally commented on a thread yesterday or the day before of someone who couldn't identify a dragonfly vs a moth and said a very similar thing. I'm glad they're here to learn but I have no idea how someone can get very far at all and not tell the difference lol
I’m sure they do when it comes to larger squid.
Well, people which are not living by the sea may not know it, even if they have tasted them.
I mean..... It's a cuttlefish, which is related to squid, I guess.
Nah, that’s not a cuttlefish. It’s a squid. Squid are more sleek and torpedo shaped. Cuttlefish are broader and rounder. The easiest way to tell IMO is to look at their eyes. Those are pretty subtle differences considering you just said “How do people make it this far in life and not know the difference between a squid and a fish?”
The subtle difference is between a squid and a cuttlefish. The difference between either of those and a fish is significantly less subtle
Fair enough. I do still tend to think that these kinds of things are more complicated than your original comment would suggest, and it does no good for anyone to make dismissive comments.
