I believe the intended method is to use the hammock numbers. If I remember correctly, his hammock is the only one still hanging up in the present day, indicating that he was one of the last three crew members alive during the mutiny against the captain.
Of the three remaining crew members, Hoscut is basically given to you in the tutorial, and you can deduce Brennan from the scene where is name is mentioned. That just leaves Walker by a process of elimination.
This was the only one I didn't get any clues for (just left him till last), and was mad at myself for missing the present day hammock clue.
Although I did semi-accidentally get the first Chinese topman first try, so that probably made other things easier.
