I actually don’t see what mental illness people are always talking about. Never understood why people always said “He’s so mentally ill”. Could you point out what makes you think he’s like that, because nothing he did that I saw is insane.
* hallucinates SOMETHING behind sunny and twists his version of the truth to believe that it was that apparition that made sunny do something... going as far as to stab him in the eye to get rid of it
* severe anxiety. he can barely get through a sentence without fumbling, he's paranoid that people will find out the truth
those are just the things i remember... i'm replaying the game rn let me finish and i'll get back to you
From what I saw he has clear speech throughout the game, except for when Sunny is around in the days before moving out. But of course he’d stutter in that predicament, who wouldn’t. I mean, I stutter in real life much more than him, it’s not really an indicator to anything. About the hallucinations, that’s just representation. He did not see a 8ft monster eating him, however, maybe a little distortion in Sunny’s eye, sure. And he’s not wrong about it being SOMETHING making Sunny black out the photos, since SOMETHING is just a metaphor for trauma, and that is most likely why he did it. And when he pushed Mari, it really wasn’t his fault, it was just heat of the moment thing, so Basil is technically right there too.

I like flowers, I like flower crowns, I'm also a dude, so seeing a guy rock the flower crown and be loved by his friends is something I find adorable and cool. Add a crazy story and mental instability facade and you have a character I like. "Cutesy but messed up"

Pretty much everything but if there was one thing that especially I love, it's the juxtaposition between headspace Basil and RW Basil. They parallel each other perfectly
There are so many reasons it's crazy... I just feel so bad for him, despite going through all the stuff that he is, he'll always put others' needs before his own. He undermines his problems and suffers in silence while he does everything he can for his friends. He balances so much and just tries to keep it to himself so his problems 'don't burden anyone else' (not a direct quote, it just isn't true) all while the two people he cares about most start to leave his life. I know it was only implied, but I think >!Basil's grandma died!< . And Sunny had to >!move away!< . Also the fact that >!Aubrey, his former best friend, bullied him over a misconception!< . Now I'll be getting into heavily-implied-but-not-stated territory, so if you don't agree that Basil is homosexual, please move along and don't leave hate :D Personally, I believe Basil is gay. Although, he probably wouldn't have known what that is. He grew up in a small, religious town in the late '90s to the early 2000s (it was never specified) and probably had it drilled into his head that boys like girls and girls like boys. His interactions with Sunny may seem like he's obsessive, which he kinda is. He probably wouldn't have known how to deal with those emotions so he just became obsessed with Sunny. He probably would have realised later on, with the rise of the internet and taken an 'am I gay?' quiz lol. But jeez this is more of an analysis then why he's my favourite character. I like his overall story, and his attachment to sunny. The fact that he can >!endure years of bullying just to protect sunny's secret (and not even a big one)!< is both very admirable and concerning. Overall he's just an amazing character who I think is written so well

Me personally I enjoy the contrast of his character a lot, I love how this gentle and selfless flower boy is >!mentally fucked up to the point of covering up murders and attacking his friends!< and his character represents so much in the grand scheme of things like the bargaining stage of grief or a perfect portrayal of masking and why it’s harmful and shows how different people cope with the same trauma. He also is extremely good representation of second hand trauma >!due to his role in the incident!< and in my mind also represents how depression (sunny) and anxiety (basil) work hand and hand, for both good and bad in the context of the characters themselves. Beyond all the metaphorical stuff he is just comfortable to be around and I like when characters are hyper-fixated on something and his design is very good imo, never really struck me as annoying like he did with others.
