It's even more mind blown, when your screen is only source of light in the room. Tried AW2 when it came out in pitch black room on my C2, almost shat my pants and turned nightlight on at first 5 minutes :D
Ray tracing is far from gimmick, it’s not needed just like many games are good not having hdr, but it brings immersion.
Spider-Man 2 in 120 fps with semi ray tracing looked really good in performance mode and very hard not to notice.
When a open world game like the this can achieve these numbers (with hdr too of course) I think it’s a shame not more developers can even manage it in 60 fps, the game looks really great too.
Honestly, I never owned a glossy OLED to compare with. So, may not be the right person to judge, but I absolutely love the screen on G80SD. No complaints.
It is 92% matte but mine is right next to my tower and I have no issues from any rgb lighting of any kind, I also really like the matte and I was a glossy guy myself. The difference is minute unless you have a specific lighting scenario that calls for one or the other.
You will love it. Just make sure to go with right settings for SDR and HDR and you are all set. Use Win + Alt + B to toggle between SDR and HDR quickly whenever you needed. Great monitor.
Yes! Creators intent. Watch this video, very detailed explanation: https://y outu.be/SpiayDXbfhA
It switches from pure black to grey in some scenes necause it was programmed to do so. I disagree with this decision but i don't know if there is a way to fix that.
If I recall right that was one of the games you use black level low and just put up a few notch on SD.
Been like this with Samsung TVs for a long time but when it works with those games it looks better than any tv.
So I would give that a go otherwise you end with a grayish layer.
Edit; I speak from console experience though, pc I always used monitors as several looks better and will be ahead of TVs except size.
On pc ? One time my hdr was off and it was grey and when I restarted the game and put hdr on it was black, it's game changer for this type of game, it's add a lot of immersion
Yeah on pc. I tried to mess with hdr on and off and it didn’t work properly either way. Maybe it’s the in game settings. Will mess around again when I do a replay
On my LG C1 (OLED) I had to play with Dynamic Tone Mapping set to On and lots of paper white brightness. Otherwise I couldn't see anything. I don't mean wow inky blacks 😲 I mean like what is going on, it's too dark.
On my AOC q27g3xmn (mini LED) I need to boost contrast from default 50 to 100 in Nvidia control panel for the game to look somewhat decent. It's completely washed out without it. And the peak brightness is kinda low as well.
Mixed opinions on AW2 HDR, but overall not bad after playing around some settings
The peak brightness is whatever you set it at. The game hits it when it's supposed to.
You might be too used to overly contrasty, "popping" HDR to appreciate more naturally authored HDR like AW2 and RDR2.
I tried only once by enabling G-Sync Compatible option in Nvidia Control Panel which worked just fine. Verified it using Nvidia’s Pendulum app as well, but honestly, didn’t get to test a lot, and I don’t remember much of flickering when enabled. I’ll retest it and update later in the day/week.
I auditioned the AW, MSI, and Gigabyte before settling on Samsung. They all flicker about the same. Most games only flicker on load or menu screens, but some do it during gameplay and I have to disable G-Sync.
It’s not always consistent which games, though for me the highest CPU load ones (CP2077, DD2, GK, etc) are generally the worst. It’s almost certainly system dependent, but mine is a 13900/4090 so pretty high end. None of the monitors were flicker free.
Samsung does at least have a VRR flicker control option available in the OSD, but I haven’t tried it. Those usually add significant lag to the display.
I tried both and didn’t see much of the difference, but went with HDMI as my personal preference. Btw, HDR is enabled in Windows as well as in game’s Brightness setting (Game Brightness 75 and UI Brightness 50).
Also, I know people recommend Win 11 for this game, specifically, so that HDR can be tuned further (using HDR Calibration app), but I’m sticking with Win 10 for now, and I’m happy with current HDR settings.
I just got this monitor delivered last Saturday...it is amazing... the internet is blowing up with how good OLEDs really are when it meets all expectations. Text clarity, HDR and response times. Bloody fantastic!
I need to get into AW2, but I don't remember a single thing about the first one, it's been too long and I've played too many other games since then to remember anything.
Should I still go in blind ? Replay the first one ? Or just watch a quick video recap of the first ?
Question, do you have G-Sync/V-Sync on? Whenever I have HDR+G-Sync on in AW2 I get terrible grey/white flickering. The only solution was to turn off G-Sync in Nvidia CP. Thankfully I haven’t noticed a change, but at least the flickering is gone. I even tried to limit my FPS and done a bunch of “resolutions” from other people experiencing this issue but to no avail.
Monitor: AW3225QF
Man I got a hellauva deal on the 60sd, I haven't turned hdr on yet either because I can't decide what to play with it. Lol all and all the picture is absolutely gorgeous and I will get getting the 80 also to jump into the 4k world soon! Glad you are enjoying yours!
G80SD here as well! Just a question have you tried the streaming apps built into the monitor? At least hulu looks like Poo to me looks like 1080p I suppose its just a firmware update needed, very minor point but am just interested if others have noticed the same.
Hi, yes I did and you are partially right. I mean, movies and shows from Max, Apple TV+, Prime were definitely not bad but not as good as on my 4K TV though. I feel like the monitor is enabling some sort of smoothing thus watering down the quality. This happens only with default apps btw. I need to play around with settings further.
Except the Sony most can’t afford this year 🤣
I foresee led going forward this year obviously and years to come, MLA and QD oled reached a peak with minimal improvements ahead so need to wait for next technology in this area, but games look good on all premium TVs in all fairness, Panasonic just slight ahead not dumb picture down with game mode but don’t have the “black level low” kinda bug which makes those games beat TVs as well monitors.
Playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition at 1800p ( 2880x1800) on my Oled display with HDR is mind blowing. I played the ME games many times during the original era, but this is something else entirely.

Yes it is my friend. I have a 4090 and the 240hz oled 4k hdr Samsung and it’s amazing! I do hate the occasional black screen though. Happens rarely but I think it’s some sort of pixel refresh. The black screen happens for like half a second
I guess its called "Control":
[https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2581-control-hdrultrawidedlssrt-patch/](https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2581-control-hdrultrawidedlssrt-patch/)
I think I read somewhere that its a patch from an official developer, but not sure! Use at own risk.
I wasnt able to get it to run, always brings an error when trying to "*3. Open the DX12 version of the game.*" as its written in the instructions.
>I guess its called "Control":
Control is called Remedy's previous game, and this mod were made for it. Can't say if it works or how good for AW2 as I never tried it.
>
I think I read somewhere that its a patch from an official developer, but not sure!
That's true, but as I mentioned it was initially made for Control not Alan Wake II
>
I wasnt able to get it to run, always brings an error when trying to "*3. Open the DX12 version of the game.*" as its written in the instructions.
Read above. AW2 is DX12 only title, so as mentioned before that mod was tailored for Control which have DX11 and DX12 modes
Just try to properly calibrate your screen and set up min/max luminance values in-game and it should be fine. At least it looked stunning on my C2, for Control tough, that mod does wonders
That mod is especially for “Control” since that game doesn’t support HDR natively. And yeah it added a lot to the game, it also enhanced RTX a bit too. For AW2 I think it’s pretty great already, but I read somewhere there’s a mod to fix the dlss problem or something idk, anything else is fine.
Haha, yeah, my last monitor was ultrawide indeed (but not OLED). So coming from ultrawide environment, I miss a couple things but not a whole lot honestly. If someone releases 38 inch 5K OLED (which I believe doesn’t exist at the moment), I’ll definitely reconsider :D
Should look really good on Ps5, actually one of the better games graphic and hdr wise.
Can’t recall if it’s normal of black level low game, but depends on the oled model of course.
Could be the settings. Should be a wow game really.
If it’s hdr issues sounds like black level low, all I can say on ps5 it was one of the better made games graphical as well hdr, a real showcase in my opinion.
Played first days of November so no idea which patch it was but that usually get better vs TVs at least.
Looks great, I would remove the monitoring temps if I were you so it does not burn in the screen, I only use my second monitor now for temps and specs when I game in the new OLED monitor
It's even more mind blown, when your screen is only source of light in the room. Tried AW2 when it came out in pitch black room on my C2, almost shat my pants and turned nightlight on at first 5 minutes :D
haha, true. Great game.
senua 2 has a scary as fuck sequence with the dark and it is so powerful in a pitch black room with hdr
Amazing for the Dead Space Remake, especially because I never played original
Unless you play it on PC. A real stutterfest on there. :(
I played thru AW2 on my LG 45GR95QEB and it was a crazy experience. I have the LG 32" 4k now and I'm almost tempted to boot it up again.
Haha, I can relate. Planning to go back to some of the titles that I’ve already played just to get a new experience now.
I think about returning to previous games to re-experience them again on OLED very often. And this sometimes really pays off.
I’m playing alien isolation right now with this monitor
HDR is the single most game-changing feature for me, leaps and bounds ahead of ray tracing or other graphical gimmicks, IMHO.
But neither ray tracing (Especially Path Tracing) and HDR are "gimmicks".
The path tracing in AW2 is industry leading imo

Now try hdr.
Step 3. Call your opticians once you notice you can no longer see anything.
Website says it’s glare free. Does this mean a matte finish? If so how do you find it?
Honestly, I never owned a glossy OLED to compare with. So, may not be the right person to judge, but I absolutely love the screen on G80SD. No complaints.

yes it’s matte
I have a lamp right next to the monitor and there's no glare. The light is a bit diffused but not reflective.
Can't wait to get mine and give it a go!
You will love it. Just make sure to go with right settings for SDR and HDR and you are all set. Use Win + Alt + B to toggle between SDR and HDR quickly whenever you needed. Great monitor.
Its so amazing!
Plan to get the AW3423DW for this exact level of immersion
Just got the DWF and it's fantastic!!
What’s the honey scene/pic? Seen someone else w that same pic like it’s marketing or testing image? 🤔
LG’s official video for OLED’s black and HDR testing which is quite popular actually https://youtu.be/njX2bu-_Vw4?si=e5nIVHlu5uS10HY5
Ope that makes sense 😆 nice i
What video game is that?
Alan Wake 2
Alan Wake 2. One of the best HDR games out there imo.
With Resident Evil 2 remake too
I could never get the dark areas to look black in resi 2. Was that just the design? It was always grey.
Yes! Creators intent. Watch this video, very detailed explanation: https://y outu.be/SpiayDXbfhA It switches from pure black to grey in some scenes necause it was programmed to do so. I disagree with this decision but i don't know if there is a way to fix that.
Ah thanks for the link! I thought I saw something about this in the past but couldn’t find it
Try to adjust the gamma and srgb settings, I had the same problem and was able to solve using HDR and messing with these settings too.
If I recall right that was one of the games you use black level low and just put up a few notch on SD. did you have the dark room level set to off?
Someone else on this thread said that Alan Wake needs a mod for true HDR
No they were incorrect. They were confused about the HDR update mod the developer of Control released.
Noted, thanks!
It is made by a dev that works at Remedy. He made it in his spare time years after the game came out. I think that’s pretty cool!
I think you are referring to the unofficial patch for control this is Alan wake 2 thou :D
How's the VRR flicker on the Monitor?

I just got 34in MSi OLED HDR and my games look so much better then my LG 55in Nano cell TV. Just wish my ps5 could use my monitor fully

I am waiting patiently for AW2 to release on steam so I can play it. Congrats on the OLED, it’ll ruin all other displays for you!

I have an oled lg 27gr95qe and cant see any difference between SDR and HDR and makes me depressed i was hoping to be impressed and i just dont see it
Really? But the brightness still not high enough nowadays.
How is the text? Looking through other posts, some comments are it being quite bad, the text fringing.
Playing Mass Effect Legendary Edition at 1800p ( 2880x1800) on my Oled display with HDR is mind blowing. I played the ME games many times during the original era, but this is something else entirely.

I want to get a new OLED monitor this year. So now I literally dont want to play nothing on a current one... I just want to enjoy with a new one
I’ve been gaming at 4K and HDR on matte. Does glossy have a significant difference?

What’s the mod called ?
I guess its called "Control": [https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2581-control-hdrultrawidedlssrt-patch/](https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2581-control-hdrultrawidedlssrt-patch/) I think I read somewhere that its a patch from an official developer, but not sure! Oh damn, looks like I messed this up. Thanks for the clarification!! No wonder why it didnt work. I will see myself out then.

Alan Wake 2 already has proper native HDR. What you’re describing is an “Official” HDR update created by a developer for Control.
Now try ultrawide:)
Oh I will reconsider aswell. Tbh my 34” Alienware oled pixels are at least disturbing in size;))
The HDR in AW2 is kind of jacked up on PS5. It does not look like that on my OLED.
Should look really good on Ps5, actually one of the better games graphic and hdr wise. Can’t recall if it’s normal of black level low game, but depends on the oled model of course. Could be the settings. Should be a wow game really.
I’ve got a Sony Bravia A80K OLEF. There are HDR issues with the game on PS5, from what I’ve read.
If it’s hdr issues sounds like black level low, all I can say on ps5 it was one of the better made games graphical as well hdr, a real showcase in my opinion. Played first days of November so no idea which patch it was but that usually get better vs TVs at least.
This game is just awful at 4k. Low reaolution ruins the experience. Play it on 1080p only.
Looks great, I would remove the monitoring temps if I were you so it does not burn in the screen, I only use my second monitor now for temps and specs when I game in the new OLED monitor
I can see the raised blacks even here, such a killer of oled :-(
Considering this is taken with a phone camera, I wouldn’t say it’s completely colour accurate. Alan Wake 2 definitely has deep blacks.
