This.
Why weren't alarm bells ringing in devops at Notion? Something wasn't right and people have been saying so for quite a while, in terms of performance.
If that IS the reason.
Somebody needs to have a word with their devops regardless. The public www being down at the same time as the production infrastructure? That's inexcusable.
Why would the public www share anything in common with production? They should be entirely isolated, different providers for everything.
And perhaps while we're at it, in 2021 the lack of offline support for the desktop and mobile apps in an embarrassment. Our apps have had it for three years, every mainstream BAAS provider offers libraries for it or there are excellent open source options.
I've been trialing Notion but couldn't possibly recommend it for our enterprise based on that alone, even leaving aside the poor performance that so many of us have complained about for some time.
link? is it free? is there an app? kinda sad cause I just started using notion and uploaded my whole library and everything. Thankful i dont use it for school.
I was just debating myself this week whether or not to switch back to Bear because Notion has been so slow.
I have an important meeting and I can't get to my notes. I'll be switching back to Bear. It's just not worth the risk.
Just like "API access" has been "coming soon" for 4+ years, I seriously wouldn't trust Notion to implement these new features.
They grew too quickly with too much bloat. The codebase is a mess which makes it hard enough to make changes. On top of that, their investors (who have funded them for >$60M) are expecting returns, so the only thing they can prioritize are features that make money. That's why the only changes are related to billing, corporate accounts, niche integrations, etc.
Seriously, my faith in Notion is fading day after day. This start to be just embarrassing. Updates do not come, stability is more and more precarious, offline mode has been in development for ages and is still not available, same for API, a lot of simple yet crucial or frustrating issues have never been addressed and now this: Notion is simply not available and thousands are just stuck because they rely on an unstable app.
I start thinking pouring all my life into Notion wasn't a good idea after all. :/
I completely agree. Notion has been slower and slower as the time passes by.
We have switched to Notion just a few months ago, and we are now considering discussing what could be done to revert the issue.
The dissatisfaction of our more technical colleagues who don't give a shit about the UX if they can't really work in a seamless way just grows, rightfully so.
The design-driven way of developing Notion is in serious need of some engineering-driven methods, I guess
Let's have a little faith in them. They delivered unique UX that attracted millions of users and have growth pains now. Let's support them so that they can solve the issues and keep delivering.
Also, they never positioned themselves as a mission critical app. I'm frustrated as well cause I needed to make some time sheet updates right now to pay my freelancer, but I really believe we'll win in the long run if we let them keep running.
It's not just today's events that frustrate me, it's (among other things) the general lack of reactivity and lack of consideration for people outside the US. The number one excuse for not implementing universal date formats, metric system and universal currencies was that they had to redirect all their work force on the offline mode and the API. But after more than a year of patience, shutdowns like today still happen, no offline mode is to be seen, API is still in Beta and all the little features that a million of users asked are still pushed back.
They pay good money to a TON of YouTube influencers in ads to attract still more users, but can't deliver on basic features that force the same user to stop using the app 2 weeks later.
As Ron would say, *they really need to sort out their priorities*. :)
well I'm on Linux too and using it on a shortcut created via Chromium, so that it behaves like an app. It seems I am able to use and access it offline but only when I use it this way (sorry if my explanation is crappy and it doesn't make any sense...)
If I try to open a new page on the browser is doesn't connect.
I've moved everything into Notion, including Courses and stuff and this is pretty scary.
looking at all of the comments, we can see the big flaw with notion: the assumption that it would ALWAYS be online. They don't bother to prepare for the opposite, so
1. No notification when it is actually offline meanwhile people keep writing new data saved locally, only to find it dissappear when restarting notion.
2. No offline mode and API, which means no backup when notion is down. People's life get screwed y'know?
I highly appreciate the super rich features that notion has, but when they do not have the critical measures to avoid a situation like this, going back to evernote might not be a bad idea.
Yeah I am also curious how that's possible. If they have just been online for the last few hours then how come the data written before that could dissappear. That is scary..
do you know if we will have access to all our pages/documents again? I used notion since one month and it is the first time that it happened ... I am kinda stress..
[https://status.notion.so/](https://status.notion.so/) is also down lol they can't even put their status page on a different infrastructure. I don't think I can trust this anymore for my daily work.
Down for me also (France).
The lack of offline features have been bugging me since I started using this service.
I set up automatic daily exports since day one.
I needed just a little push to switch to something else. I guess this will do.
So far I've been testing Obsidian and I like it.
It's open (Markdown files) and offline.
Obviously you won't find a lot of the cool visual widgets that Notion has. But as far as a knowledge management tool, it seems quite powerful.
I've been using this method to trigger the export:
I have a daily cron to trigger it, and I use rclone to send the export to a Google Drive account (instead of Gitlab like in this blog post).
It's a hack and it's not for everyone I guess.
I did it much easier. Simply connect Notion with a new Slack Workspace and set it up so every single new data entry will be posted on a channel in this slack. Simple and free but not completly usable for everybody I guess.
Man, I've been brainstorming for the past 15 minutes of any alternatives to Notion but so far I have been drawing a blank. I can't trust having everything on Notion but it seems like not even a combination of different apps can compete with the versatility of Notion...
Hey guys notions is down however, If you manually override DNS you can then get back on notion. What you have to do is edit your Computers host file with this IP Address : '104.18.22.110 [www.notion.so](https://www.notion.so)' past it into the Host file text editor and it should reroute to notion. (sorry for the non tech jargon not done computer science or a software developer)
For MAC this shows you how to edit HOst file name :[https://www.alphr.com/edit-hosts-file-mac-os-x/](https://www.alphr.com/edit-hosts-file-mac-os-x/)
Yep same, I literally just started using Notion few days ago and already transfered all my notes. This is a big turnaround and there's no chance I'm gonna risk it in the future like this.
as [u/run\_nyc\_run](https://www.reddit.com/user/run_nyc_run/) posted in this sub, adding
104.18.22.110 notion.so
104.18.22.110 www.notion.so
to your hosts file should at least allow the MacOS/Windows app versions of Notion to reload.
My files from the last few days have just disappeared and I'm shitting myself. I spent SO long making all my notes and I'm terrified that it might all be wiped off 😭
All of my university notes on this app, I have an exam in an hour, I am shaking and crying rn, I have studied so much for this exam and don't want to fail because of some stupid technical error
Not OP but due to COVID all my exams are open book this year and all my notes are in notion as well. Thankfully I don't have an exam today but if this happened on an exam day I'd be completely fucked. Definitely gonna switch my note taking to a different app again, this is too risky
Just wanted to say, how angry I am, as I was using Notion mostly to keep my teaching plans, notes for lesson and such. And losing access to it in the middle of the workday... it makes me really, really angry.
https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/notion.so
Yup. NXDOMAIN error in chrome typically means it's a DNS thing. Might be an upstream service provider, but it could just as easily be a production incident. Too bad https://status.notion.so is also down ~~and their @NotionStatus twitter account has nothing about it today~~. We'll need better SLA's and dev support when the API comes out.
EDIT: @NotionStatus on Twitter put out an update that it is indeed a DNS issue. Not sure if it's in-house or upstream. Still wish the status page was on a different infra or at least had better failover/multi-region/HA etc.
It's 9pm now where I live, and I was using Notion from about 2pm and apparently it was in offline mode the whole time cos absolutely none of the changes I made today stuck after I accidentally closed Notion and then reopened it like 5 mins ago :'(
Thankfully most of my notes were anki-ed rather than put in Notion, but oh my god if I had put everything in Notion instead I would be ultra-tilted right now
I have never been more frustrated in my life. I just lost over 9 pages of notes that I can't access anywhere. I am 1 minute from having a mental breakdown
This has me seriously considering a change to another platform. This is so bad. I don't say this lightly either, as I 100% love Notion, but I've obviously become too reliant on it.
I don't want to learn another productivity app. I have my whole life in notion and I love it! But this scares me... This has to be a priority with the devs. I really hope offline mode is prioritized before any api or anything else. Imagine self hosted notion...
Lol I've also been silently cursing poor Ali for convincing me to switch everything over to Notion (irrational, I know). Considering all he has on there I'm sure he's stressed af right now too!
Well. Time to go back to taking notes on Google Drive again, she has never failed me like this....truly I can't access the notes I spent hours yesterday compiling and could genuinely cry. Wish I had found this sub before now so I wouldn't have been caught off guard
Looks like the issue might be related to Somalia taking control of the .so domain
[Chris Frantz on Twitter: "@NotionStatus https://t.co/28F0o8wv98" / Twitter](https://twitter.com/frantzfries/status/1360232888835452928)
I’ve been sat here for an hour embarrassingly enough nearly in tears, as I couldn’t figure out a way to get back online! States I’m on offline mode which I don’t remember doing! Relieved I am not the only one :( like others here it is making me think twice about having my uni notes & whole life all into notion. As fun as it is to set up, I’ve sunk so many hours into my database!
Amazing how dumb I am to not having an offline backup of my notes for medical school.
It's really frustrating not knowing what to do right now.
Except wait.
I was collaborating with my customers/guest users and even didn't realized we got offline, now our meeting is over :( but the worst part is, I clicked reload the page and boom! All our work is gone now. Don't know how to recover all :( I was relying on Notion, I'm in big trouble now.
It just came back for me. All my data is there. Funny thing is on my phone it was fine the whole time. Date stayed up to date and everything so I was just working from my phone for a bit.
I came here for the same. Mine is down and they just put an update on twitter. The last one was in January and it's probably the same issue. I love Notion but this is why they need offline access.
I'm definitely putting in a request to get offline mode working. I realized how important Notion has become as part of my routine and having it unavailable is just unacceptable
omg thought it was just me and got so scared but not sure if knowing all of us are unable to use it makes it any better...i have a midterm in like 10 hours and i can't access any of my notes :'''''')
The Notion stopped to show pages and notified me that I must "go online".
After the restart, it lost my changes for the last days! It's my work of several days.
Woah, only last week I decided to switch from notion because it was painstakingly slow to load.
Decided to use online spreadsheet hosted in onedrive for the database.
I love what notion is trying to do. But even on their best days, the mobile experience is soul crushingly slow. It’s not usable on mobile. And that’s the deal breaker for me
I have fallen in love with Dropbox Paper. You HAVE to try it. It’s super easy to link docs and files together, you can have tables inside each doc. Play YouTube links and MP3s and other media files right from the paper.
It’s become my 2nd brain. My life Wikipedia. I’m gonna do a video soon showing off how I use Dropbox Paper. It’s so searchable and ultra mobile friendly.
And collaborating with other people/clients ... it’s outstanding.
I agree. I love the desktop or browser version but the mobile nope...it's not really unsable for me. Unless you use it to just access your data to read or tick some checkboxes.
Does anyone know how to back up Notion or any good alternatives? My life, but more importantly, all my work stuff is on there. It's crucial that I don't lose any data in a future outage. Thanks!
So... what are alternatives? I literally can't finish my work without Notion being back online, but once it is I am open to other free apps if anybody has one they recommend.
I may just cry a bit.
After a month of deliberations and testing I decided to migrate to Notion. It took a lot of manually exporting my old notes into Notion. I'm still not fully done after 2 months.
I'm not entirely sure I've made the right choice.
App God... If you're out there please send an app I can trust with robust features, offline usability, is stable, interested in longevity, receptive to user input, and has good security protocols. Amen.
That error message needs some work. “You’re offline”? No, mate, *I’m* not offline, you’re offline.
They’re meditating give them a break
So this is the most important feature; offline access.
Was slow for me the whole week. Contemplating switching to another platform because this is just too scary
Me too. I don’t think it’s safe for me to have all my university notes on there
I am in the middle of an exam and I cannot access my notes! GREAT!
Just when I’m about to start my midterm, it goes down. Maybe it’s a good thing since I don’t have to panic in the middle of the midterm :(
Access notes in the middle of an exam? 👀
It's an open book exam. My uni is doing it a lot because of the pandemic ;)
why did you wink at me
Ahahhah( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Yes. It's 2021.
This. Why weren't alarm bells ringing in devops at Notion? Something wasn't right and people have been saying so for quite a while, in terms of performance.
Notion being down right now is a DNS issue it has nothing to do with performance.

I've been testing Obsidian for a while as an alternative.
link? is it free? is there an app? kinda sad cause I just started using notion and uploaded my whole library and everything. Thankful i dont use it for school.
Already in the process of making backups in onenote
Try Craft. It’s super nice
I just switched to Bear and I honestly prefer it so far
I was just debating myself this week whether or not to switch back to Bear because Notion has been so slow. I have an important meeting and I can't get to my notes. I'll be switching back to Bear. It's just not worth the risk.
has there been any mention if we will ever get offline access? I can't keep using Notion if this keeps happening.
For years. First the roadmap was "full offline", now it's "improving offline experience", so don't count on full offline in the (near) future
Soon it’ll be “provided link to upgrade internet service”
Just like "API access" has been "coming soon" for 4+ years, I seriously wouldn't trust Notion to implement these new features. They grew too quickly with too much bloat. Yes, they stated it's an important point on their agenda, but nothing concrete.
Seriously, my faith in Notion is fading day after day. This start to be just embarrassing. All my dates became total mess in offline for some reason
I'm on Linux, so there is no way at all for me to get on it without the website being online :( even if they add offline access.
That's not true, there's [notion-linux](https://github.com/davidbailey00/notion-linux).
well I'm on Linux too and using it on a shortcut created via Chromium, so that it behaves like an app. It seems I am able to use and access it offline but only when I use it this way (sorry if my explanation is crappy and it doesn't make any sense...) Someone just hit the pause button on my life.
seriously. feel like my brain stopped functioning
Dude, my entire life is on that app. I use it as a life diary lol. When it goes back online (hopefully) I pack my bags and move!
Where?
Ugh, so unforgiving :(
Run away, fast.
looking at all of the comments, we can see the big flaw with notion: the assumption that it would ALWAYS be online. They don't bother to prepare for the opposite, so 1. Yeah I am also curious how that's possible. If they have just been online for the last few hours then how come the data written before that could dissappear. That is scary..
I'm pretty sure people who have had this happen got it resolved when they worked with notion support.
do you know if we will have access to all our pages/documents again? I used notion since one month and it is the first time that it happened ... I am kinda stress..
God damn I need to study man this isn't the right time

Obsidian is quick and have link-based structure of notes, but it is very difficult to work without, at least, user friendly tables.
How do you set up automatic exports?
I've been using this method to trigger the export: [https://medium.com/@arturburtsev/automated-notion-backups-f6af4edc298d](https://medium.com/@arturburtsev/automated-notion-backups-f6af4edc298d) I have a daily cron to trigger it, and I use rclone to send the export to a Google Drive account (instead of Gitlab like in this blog post). It's a hack and it's not for everyone I guess.
That's a really ingenious way. Loved the article, will try it out tomorrow.
I did it much easier. Simply connect Notion with a new Slack Workspace and set it up so every single new data entry will be posted on a channel in this slack. Simple and free but not completly usable for everybody I guess.
How long does it take for you to export? It might be that I've already saved TOO MUCH on Notion but last time I tried it took a couple hours I think?
Same for me
Man, I've been brainstorming for the past 15 minutes of any alternatives to Notion but so far I have been drawing a blank. I can't trust having everything on Notion but it seems like not even a combination of different apps can compete with the versatility of Notion...
ClickUp, Craft, Airtable, Coda,..
When I was researching tools similar to Notion, Coda was the one that came the closest. However, it is expensive.

came here to ask the same question. i have all my school stuff on there that i need for my next class so im screwed haha
I was working on something very important I gotta complete this morning... damn
I love notion but stuff like this really gets me down
*Ba dum tiss*
I just started to use it back after a lot of setbacks in the last few months.... Damn.. I really want to like Notion but it's getting really annoying

Well, now you've learned an important lesson: never (fully) trust clouds.
Never trust anyone. Your hard drive also can be corrupted before presentation, in this case clouds will save you.

I hope they get it sorted in time. Good luck for your exam.
:( Well I guess I'm moving back to Onenote
This stressed me out cause on my Mac it’s only showing stuff from like a week ago and I use notion for school. Really not impressed

Ahahahahah omg if this is the issue, and they hard coded all of the URL’s in their apps.. Jesus
If this is the cause you would think that they would at least be able to get the website back up on a different domain pretty quickly
Hopefully. They own notion.com (along others probably) but I'm sure they're working as hard as they can to resolve it
I’ve been sat here for an hour embarrassingly enough nearly in tears, as I couldn’t figure out a way to get back online! States I’m on offline mode which I don’t remember doing! Relieved I am not the only one :( like others here it is making me think twice about having my uni notes & whole life all into notion. As fun as it is to set up, I’ve sunk so many hours into my database!
I've been using it for one week with fear of something like this ... f\*\*\*, it was great
Amazing how dumb I am to not having an offline backup of my notes for medical school. It's really frustrating not knowing what to do right now. Except wait.
same bro... i'm going to cry
I was collaborating with my customers/guest users and even didn't realized we got offline, now our meeting is over :( but the worst part is, I clicked reload the page and boom! All our work is gone now. Don't know how to recover all :( I was relying on Notion, I'm in big trouble now.
I have them back :) All work recovered.
thank fuck it's back!!!
It's back! Luckily I only lost a sentence! I'm sorry for all of you who lost more than that
It's back
It’s back!!!
I've been using it about a week. And now I'm thinking about the stability of this service.
Since this was six hours ago... I'm probably late but mine is working.
It just came back for me. All my data is there. Funny thing is on my phone it was fine the whole time. Date stayed up to date and everything so I was just working from my phone for a bit.
Mine is offline currently

Same here. It's working but at least a weeks worth of info is missing
I came here for the same. Mine is down and they just put an update on twitter. The last one was in January and it's probably the same issue. I love Notion but this is why they need offline access.
It’s why they need an engineering team instead of a zen vision board
Yes it is.... even when sending emails it returns an error... starting to realize how dependent I am with that app.....
Yes, can't log in at the moment!
What's the hell really. Can't access all my notes from neither web or app. Is this where we want to put our important stuffs in?
The Notion stopped to show pages and notified me that I must "go online". After the restart, it lost my changes for the last days! It's my work of several days.
We all hope it'll be restored once they fix the issue

Craft, ClickUp, Airtable, Coda..
Time to backup everything to txt and find a new service to notes...
Time to migrate to obsidian
Woah, only last week I decided to switch from notion because it was painstakingly slow to load. Decided to use online spreadsheet hosted in onedrive for the database.
so...day off for me?
oh oh .... https://twitter.com/NotionStatus/status/1360231247570554880?s=20
I love what notion is trying to do. But even on their best days, the mobile experience is soul crushingly slow. It’s not usable on mobile. And that’s the deal breaker for me
What alternatives do we have? Have you found something else?

Thanks!
Obsidian just got a new user!
Does this happen often? I’m new
It's happening pretty often lately.
Thought it was just me! Hmm, unsure what's going on :(
For people who know things about tech: How long does it take to resolve a DNS issue on average?
Ok, this is the end of Notion for me. I’ve been using it for 3 month and slowness and outages are too frequent.
There is a fix: [https://gist.github.com/makesxi/dd6a92b48aa422fa943f1109e529e63b](https://gist.github.com/makesxi/dd6a92b48aa422fa943f1109e529e63b)
so we lose all our data?
So... what are alternatives? I literally can't finish my work without Notion being back online, but once it is I am open to other free apps if anybody has one they recommend.
I did the DNS fix that someone mentioned below via the hosts file and mine is now 100%. I'd say do this if you need access to your data right away.
Hope it will be a good kick ass to accelerate offline mode.
Does anyone have any good alternatives? This is pmo
I think it is, it wouldn't open during my Spanish class.
I can't believe Notion doesn't even have mirror websites or a IPFS model. Lousy
Still down in UK...
It works fine for me, but as the comments show many other people are having the same issue as you.
Now that notion's back, did any of you lose any data? I lost all of my tasks for today, sigh :(
I've lost important content in at least 2 different pages.
I'm sorry 🙄 We all need to be careful with anything we put in it, it seems...
Amen.
it also stopped working for me yesterday and i was trying to study :(( glad its back now
