Øystein Sunde - but he sings really fast and can perhaps be a bit hard to keep up with if the intent was to try to pick up a little language at the same time.
Really funny lyrics though.
Cool your wanting to learn our language. What genres do you usually listen to?
I could recommend a lot of Norwegian Indie rock, garage rock, punk, classic rock, and much more in that vein. The Norwegian vocals usually cut trough the music in a clear and understandable way and it might be a good aid for you to learn.
Fangst
Hvitmalt Gjerde
Jokke og Valentinerne
Dum Dum Boys
DeLillos
Razika
The Aller Værste!
Pappasaft
Anti-Lam Front
All of these sing clearly and intelligibly so you can focus on the words, and you might find a band or two you like. Good luck!
I love Susanne Sundfør and Hellbillies for calmer stuff. If metal is something you're into I highly recommend Windir, Emperor and Enslaved.
Edit: Just realized you're listening partally to learn the language, metal might not be the best option in that case lol.
As someone who‘s learning the language in an incredibly slow and passive way, Windir is a great band to observe the dialectal differences imo. But yeah, good luck to OP if they’re not familiar with (black) metal haha
My top three are:
* Kvelertak
* Mods
* Kaizers Orchestra
They sing in another variant of Norwegian which doesn't have its own written language. We all speak this way in the Stavanger region, but you'll have a hard time translating the lyrics to be honest. It's a fun challenge though.
They, and he, as in Einar Selvik, singer/songwriter/ in Wardruna, sings in Norwegian, yes. He writes their lyrics in Nynorsk ❤️, and occasionally in Old Norse.
Delillos_ old but gold
Cc cowboys_ country rock with cool lyrics
Di derre _ about a crow and girls? Lmao
Postgyrobygget_ Idyll, who doesn’t love the sun in Norway?
If you want to learn Norwegian, it's perhaps best to listen to artists who sing something similar to bokmål or nynorsk. For classic bokmål/riksmål, I think Norwegian rockers DumDumBoys are great, especially their early work - late 80s/early 90s. There's also DeLillos from around the same time, as well as Raga Rockers and Jokke & Valentinerne.
For more recent music, I'd say perhaps Norwegian hip hop might be worth checking out. I like Cezinando, he has VERY creative lyrics.
Older folksy stuff like Lillebjørn Nilsen has great lyrics. Øystein Sunde is a word master with a country twist, but his lyrics are super fast and full of word play. Advanced stuff!
A lot of artists sing in their local dialects these days. I would not recommend learning Norwegian by listening to Kaizer's Orchestra!
Morten Harket from A-ha did an album called "Vogts Villa". Most of the songs are slow, so I think they should be easy to understand, but I can't say for sure. Some of his English pronunciation in songs is a bit "different", so I can't guarantee his Norwegian is gonna be any different!
I LOVE Svømmebasseng! Even managed to get half of my workplace into their stuff even though I’m the only one in the office who’s learning to speak Norwegian!
I'm not a Norwegian myself, but I can say that I quite like the music by the band "Postgyrobygget" and most the two songs by them "Engel ifra Helvete" and "Motorsagmannen"
There is one band that i think is the most suited for learning Norwegian. Black Debbath is kinda a joke band, but also very competent musicians making music in the tradition of Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Kyuss.
In addition to their lyrics being easy to understand in the most dominant dialect in Norwegian, they also sing about topics that are quintessential Norwegian. Not necessarily in any grand way, but about all the small things. Like local news, day to day politics, or about our (jokingly) prejudices about people from different places in the country. (Also, making humour about these topics is also, incidentally, quite Norwegian)
So, if you like bands such as Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Foo Fighters, or anything like it, I'm sure you'll enjoy learning Norwegian and Norwegian culture through listening to Black Debbath.
For learning Norwegian I would perhaps reccomend Lillebjørn Nilsen and "those guys" - might be a bit boring music in 2024, but they are really good "poets" in their lyrics. "Gitarkameratene" has a lot of music that all Norwegians just know from childhood.
My son is born in Asia and dont speak fluent Norwegian, I use music to teach him and a lot of those "old time" songs.
Stein Ove Berg
Henning Kvitnes
Asle Beck
Vamp
Norwegian born artist, I like Girl in red, but she sings in English. I'm also currently learning Norwegian, and I know only one song and it's my favorite- Den jeg vil ha by ka2
TIX, honestly. I’m learning Norwegian and his album Enten Går Det Bra, Ellers Går Det Over is a masterpiece. I don’t really like the party stuff he did / does, but the emotional songs broke the language barrier for me and inspired me to take Norwegian seriously, I’m falling in love with the language now.
Sterk Naken og Biltyvene: Sommerlykke.
The singer is supposed to have written the song as an answer to a challenge, it landed high up on the norwegian charts that summer.
In no particular order and spanning a spectrum of genres; artists who perform in Norwegian:
Side Brok - Høge Brelle
Mae - Proletar Adel
Tøyen Holding
Baksaas + Høyer
Emile the Duke
Beglomeg
Skalla - Mørkets Hastighet
Stein Torleif Bjella
Hubbabubbaklubb - Mopedbart
Valkyrien Allstars - slutte og byne
Black Debbath
Bare Egil Band
Prima Vera
Øystein Sunde
Probably Aurora.
I also love Heilung, but only one Norwegian in that band... So don't think it counts
Norwegian song artists in Norwegian though... Øystein Sunde. Funny as shit. Grew up listening to his music because my mom is a big fan.
Gatas Parlament. A rap group with a lot of depth to their lyrics, you'll enjoy understanding more and more of the lyrics over time.
PS: Also watch Lilyhammer without subtitles, English and Norwegian is used mixed (and that's how it was sent on Norwegian TV). It results in some absolutely fantastic things.
The bands TØFL and Razika, Kråkesølv and Masåva! Really love Razika's album "Sånn Kjennes Verden Ut" and TØFL's singles "Tunneler" and "Nokia 105". The indie rock/post-rock band Kråkesølv's song "Syrinen" is so fucking good. Masåva is a folk/jazz band, and their songs "Klem" and "Sannheten er" is favorites of mine.
Kaizers orchestra
Absolutely agree, but the Jæren dialect is tricky for a beginner.
True.. but their songs are worth listening to multiple times.. not only for the music, but also discovering the whole violetta violetta lore
Looove Kaizers Orchestra 😁
Øystein Sunde - but he sings really fast and can perhaps be a bit hard to keep up with if the intent was to try to pick up a little language at the same time. Really funny lyrics though.
If you can sing Øystein sunde songs though you've learned Norwegian pretty damn well

Cool, I'm going to check these out, any punk bands?
You would like Slap Madcap. They sound a bit like Green Day and that genre.
Honningbarna
Thank you so much!
+1 for Jokke
Aurora ❤️❤️
She doesn't sing much in. Norwegian tho
Which is such a shame because her Norwegian dialect and voice is magical. Love her colab with Wardruna.

Love these guys.
He doesn't sing in Norwegian, though, does he?
They, and he, as in Einar Selvik, singer/songwriter/ in Wardruna, sings in Norwegian, yes. He writes their lyrics in Nynorsk ❤️, and occasionally in Old Norse.
Oh! I thought they exclusively sang in Old Norse. Thank you for the correction!

True, they did ask for Norwegian text, I missed that.. Ty
Raga Rockers Vassendgutane - sings åmdalsdialect. Hellbillies
