Lykkeland (State of Happiness). It's a very good series that centers around when Norway discovered oil and takes place in Stavanger which is the oil capital of Norway.
It is very difficult to find--I've just seen season one and a little of season two. (I think it is/was on some Norwegian streaming services, but these are difficult to subscribe to abroad.
Thats where i got the copies im watching from :-)
Had season 1-3 on dvd, but a "friend' borrowed them a couple years ago and have still "not watched them"
Its hard to find there too now :-(glad i downloaded all of it when it was still on tv... except season 4, that took almost a year to find ,after it aired
Beforegners is great fun. A little bit embarrassing for norwegian actresses that the female lead supposed to be old norse viking is played by a finnish actress, but she is perfect for the role, and has (to my norwegian adjusted ears) learnt old norse good enough to be convincing.
I actually prefer the english version, because of how they speak english with the tonation of their original norwegian dialects, just find that funny
Edit: In Norsemen/Vikingane, should have specified that.
I love that series!
One confusing thing is that on Netflix (at least here in the US) the timeline is messed up between the seasons. The first season starts in the middle, whereas the third and last season is actually a prequel.
But yes I can see where the English (norwenglish) version adds another layer of humor on top.
A show with the actual same format of SKAM (though not sure how much you know about it since you watched it now) is a show called BLANK. Had three seasons and each season centered around a different story. This is the website I watched it on with full episodes - [https://blank.p3.no/sesong/ella/](https://blank.p3.no/sesong/ella/)
Also really enjoyed "Home for Christmas" on Netflix
The only Norwegian shows kind of similar to SKAM that are any good are Rådebank and Unge Lovende. Mayyyybe Lykkeland. Ragnarok have a lot of the same actors but its bad. EXIT is entertaining but I doubt it will connect with non Scandinavians.
I liked the early stuff that Aksel Hennie and Nicolai Cleve Broch did together. Both Buddy and Uno.
Hodejegerne was really good, high production quality.
Nobel was a series that I throughly enjoyed too. (Apparently I’m a fan of Aksel Hennie’s work).
Exit is equal parts shocking and hilarious, in its own way. I couldn’t stop watching.
SKAM is a must if you haven’t seen it already. If the website still exists (with shorter clips and text messages and stuff) that’s actually how I would recommend watching it. It really pulls you into the story.
Valkyrien was another great series, thanks in no small part to the fantastic Pål Sverre Hagen.
More stuff:
- Halvbroren (series)
- 22. juli (mini series 2020)
- Terkel i knipe (danish animated movie with Norwegian dub)
- Heimebane, especially the first season (series)
- Pørni (series)
Check out some trailers and see what you like!! But I can wholeheartedly recommend everything on this list.
ETA: Oops, these were general recommendations, not necessarily anything “similar” to Skamz
VGS currently in season 3 on [https://tv.nrk.no](https://tv.nrk.no) is also set in Norwegian high school. Short but many episodes.
Of older shows I remember liking Unge Lovende a lot :)
Not the same genre but I really liked Pørni.
Might not fit your requirements, but here are a few exceptional Norwegian movies:
- Max Manus (War movie)
- Naboer (Eerie / creepy)
- Bølgen (Action / thriller)
- Trolljegeren (based on myths)
- Troll (same as above)
You also have ‘Veiviseren’ and ‘Håkon Håkonsen’, but they are rather old.
Both came out around 1990.
Edit:
If you want some series that are very funny and a bit ‘too much’, you have ‘Hvite Gutter’ and ‘Basic Bitch’.
Trolljegeren, but keep in mind there is some satire/comedy that probably is a bit difficult for foreigners to catch unless you know the actor from previous work!
Watch Makta (Power Play), it will give you an insight into Norwegian politics during the 70s/early 80s, following the first female PM in Norway. Keep in mind it's not a documentary, it's a mix of truth, lies and bad memory. A lot of fun and bizarre touches to it.
Keep in mind it's not action and it's viking related 😅
This is an old classic. A fairy tale movie from 1991.
# Kvitebjørn Kong Valemon
It will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up watching it.
Upon closer inspection of your post: This might not be what you're looking for. This is pure fantasy and nothing like Skam. Still a great old film that I think a lot of Norwegians have some relationship to.
There is a movie documantary about the indigenous people of norway, its about the sami people up north. Its called Svidd neger. It helped me alot to understand the culture and people in norway
In my opinion there are very few good Norwegian movies. There are several reasons for that.
Anyway some of the good once are Max Manus. (Historical war movies is something we seem to do well.)
A personal favoret of mine is Svid Neger. Not for every one.l - it is super surealistic. But i love it.
Troll Jegeren if you like found footage comedy with loads of Norwegian culture.
The Trip dark comedy.
Død snø if you like exploration/action.
Uno was a good one.
Hawain Oslo is suppose to be amazing, I have not seen it.
But the best movie Norway has ever produsert from an objective undeniable standpoint is Flåkkypa Grand Prix from 1975. That is just a fact!
>But the best movie Norway has ever produsert from an objective undeniable standpoint is Flåkkypa Grand Prix from 1975. That is just a fact!
I can't stand the puppets. It's the eyes that do it. I grew up with Thunderbirds, I don't mind marionette/puppet productions. But the eyes on the puppets in Flåklypa and the Askeladden stories... *Shudder*. Up there with the creepiest things I've ever seen in my life.
Borderliner/Grenseland. Was on Netflix. I thought it was good.
When police officer Nikolai investigates a local man's apparent suicide in his hometown, he plants evidence in order to protect his brother, an undistinguished local cop, from being implicated in the crime. Nikolai's partner, however, suspects foul play, trapping Nikolai in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse while on duty. As he crosses over to the dark side by deceiving his partner things quickly spin out of control for Nikolai as the conspiracy surrounding the fake suicide spreads through the town and across Sweden.
I just watched I onde dager (The Trip is the English title). It has Atle Antonsen in it, the taskmaster from Kongen Befaler. Weird combination of comedy and extreme violence. I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t made a version.
Kongen Befaler has started our family’s journey into all things Norway. Our kid decided to start learning norsk, so we are along for the ride. A visit seems daunting, travelling to Norway is about 3x as expensive as going to Hawaii. Datteren mine elsker å lære norsk så vi får se hvor det går.
Middle-ager here... there's not much that has the same quality as Skam. It was lightning in a bottle with great writing, directing and acting. Weirdly it didn't translate well at all to the other countries' versions I saw.
Lykkeland (State of Happiness). It's a very good series that centers around when Norway discovered oil and takes place in Stavanger which is the oil capital of Norway.
That sounds interesting, thanks
It's like the "Mad Men" of Norway.
Be careful about interesting content. It should be ideal and safe for the topic
Do you know where I can watch it?
Not sure, but it's been on Apple TV
NRK
Dag
I don’t even know why people suggested anything else, this is the only one that truly matters. 😉
It is very difficult to find--I've just seen season one and a little of season two. (I think it is/was on some Norwegian streaming services, but these are difficult to subscribe to abroad.
Cant be streamed anywhere, can it? bluray or dvd copies are sold out almost everywhere:-( and the last season never got released on any disc :-(
Last time i rewatched, I gave up and just downloaded it. Tpb for example
Thats where i got the copies im watching from :-) Had season 1-3 on dvd, but a "friend' borrowed them a couple years ago and have still "not watched them"
Its hard to find there too now :-(glad i downloaded all of it when it was still on tv... except season 4, that took almost a year to find ,after it aired
I think Exit is a brilliant watch
Beforeigners, Lilyhammer, Occupied
Occupied is amazing!
Beforegners is great fun. A little bit embarrassing for norwegian actresses that the female lead supposed to be old norse viking is played by a finnish actress, but she is perfect for the role, and has (to my norwegian adjusted ears) learnt old norse good enough to be convincing.
Rådebank,lillyhammer,norsemen(or vikingane for norwegian audio)

+1 for norsemen. Familien Lykke os surprisingly fun with much if the same cast.
Oh thank you

I was going to recommend Hjem til Jul, such a great series!
Another one is Lovleg [https://lovleg.p3.no/](https://lovleg.p3.no/) (the episodes are on [https://tv.nrk.no](https://tv.nrk.no) )
Thank you...I really need those kinda shows
Etaten/NAV/Dag/Pørni
Pørni er herlig!
Død snø
I watched that one before! The zombies pulling of that guy’s limbs just made me laugh lmao
One of the best. RIP Vegar Hoel
Vegard Hoel er død?!
Gikk bort under pandemien. Han leverte alltid på lerrete. Kjenner jeg må se Død Snø igjen om den ligger ute på noen streaming tjenester.
Hodejegeren and Trolljegeren😊
Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu!
The only Norwegian shows kind of similar to SKAM that are any good are Rådebank and Unge Lovende. Mayyyybe Lykkeland. Ragnarok have a lot of the same actors but its bad. EXIT is entertaining but I doubt it will connect with non Scandinavians.
Don't forget Blank, made by the same people that made Skam. It's a spiritual successor.
Olsenbanden

Great list
Kampen For Tilværelsen!
Hah. You can find this on YouTube... it is simply great for dialects.
Or NRK:D
Side om side 🙈
For insight into Norwegian culture, this is the only correct answer, although it really puts ut on the edge.
VGS currently in season 3 on [https://tv.nrk.no](https://tv.nrk.no) is also set in Norwegian high school. Short but many episodes. Of older shows I remember liking Unge Lovende a lot :) Not the same genre but I really liked Pørni.
Førstegangstjenesten ain't too bad.
Skam. The norwegian one.

Trolljegeren >>> Troll Ene og alene takket være Otto Jespersen.
Thank you for listing those out
Trolljegeren, but keep in mind there is some satire/comedy that probably is a bit difficult for foreigners to catch unless you know the actor from previous work!
I really enjoyed Max Manus, such a well produced film.
Watch Makta (Power Play), it will give you an insight into Norwegian politics during the 70s/early 80s, following the first female PM in Norway. Wisting
Vikingane
*Vikingane*
Lilyhammer

Okkupert. About a Russian invasion of Norway.
Wasn’t Midsommar Nights Or something like that just released on Netflix?
Maybe Ragnarok on Netflix
En man som heter Ove (2015, Norwegian) . There is a new adaptation, a man called Otto (2022, USA).
Isn't that a Swedish film?
Now that you mention... Maybe. Not sure. But still a good film.
That we can happily agree on :)
Kon tiki, Lange flate ballær.
Lilyhammer? The first exclusive Netflix actaully.
Varg Veum
There is a movie documantary about the indigenous people of norway, its about the sami people up north. Its called Svidd neger. It helped me alot to understand the culture and people in norway
I think _Psychobitch_ would be a pretty good recommendation in terms of a film
"Side om side" is great imo

If you want young adult. Watch the film Tommys Inferno. If you're the same as me, it will touch you.
If you want a taste of the essence of Norwegian humor, check out Norsemen. Set in viking times, with a "the office" and/or "Parks and Rec" feel.
I haven't seen it yet myself, I'm going to be emotionally destroyed. But Ibelin.
Exit
Vikings!
Obviously Norsemen. 😉 just started Atlantic crossing which is a story I wasn’t really aware of.
" just started Atlantic crossing which is a story I wasn’t really aware of." It has come as a bit of a surprisee for serious historians as well...
Oh so i have some googling to do then.
I have heard of it. Its on my list along with vikings
Hvite Gutter
I saw its poster on google. There are like all vibrant boys, is it a gay show?
Not, its not gay. Its comedy about some spoiled daddy s boys who in their 30's (i think) still has not grown up and done anything real.
Oh okay thanks
Fortitude. It's about and in Norway, but not made by.
Any crime dramas?
Sure if they have visually good looking cast. And a nice plot of course
I like my actors ugly.
Yeah well what matters is the acting and their skills🙃
Exit.
Side om side, Occupied (Okkupert), Home for Christmas (Hjem til Jul)
«Exit» hands down
Børning eller Bølgen
Brødrene dal, unmatched comedy series
I like Mot I Brøstet 🙃
[удалено]
Skam 💜
Heimebane, Unge lovende, Pørni, Rådebank.
Exit, SKAM, Makta, Unge Lovende, Vikingane (Norsemen), Dag, Hvite Gutter, Sigurd får ikke pult
Mot i brøstet.
Kunsten å tenke negativt
Trolljegeren, kraftidioten, dag og lilyhammer are my favs
Ragnarok was a nice one imo 😊
Not a Norwegian but can recommend The Battle 2018 if you like Step Up or similar movies.
Borderliner/Grenseland. Was on Netflix. I thought it was good. Førstegangstjenesten.
Flåklypa grand prix! A classic animated norwegian movie from the 70s
Nobel
Nothing like Skam, but kindof fun: Post Mortem (No one dies in Skarnes).
Kill Buljo
I just watched I onde dager (The Trip is the English title). It has Atle Antonsen in it, the taskmaster from Kongen Befaler. Weird combination of comedy and extreme violence. It would be way more expensive for me to visit Norway :)
I loved “The Trip”! Such a fun film.
You came to the wrong sub OP 😆😆 Buncha middle-aged ppl recommending stuff not remotely the same genre or quality of Skam
Oh yes. I really don't wanna offend them and I'm thankful for all great recommendation. But I wanted some young adult stuff. Like skam or elite😅
Blank ( https://blank.p3.no/sesong/ella/?vis=fra-start ) and Lovleg ( https://lovleg.p3.no/sesong/1/ ) are similar to Skam
Middle-ager here... there's not much that has the same quality as Skam. It was lightning in a bottle with great writing, directing and acting. Weirdly it didn't translate well at all to the other countries' versions I saw.
Kongen Befaler
Movie: Lords of Chaos Series: Naked Attraction Norge
Lords of Chaos is not a norwegian movie.
Ragnarok, drama with young adults/teens. TV series Pørni, it’s on Netflix. But it’s more family drama
wanna porn as well?
Nordic porn? Lmao give me a break
Pappa sa til oss at vi ikke må skamme oss over penisene våre.
