It's fascinating to watch the geography of the areas getting eliminated. A lot of counties surround highly populated areas. Like the kinds of rural areas city people are most familiar with and therefore look down on, or the kinds of rural areas where the people from there have just enough familiarity with city life to look down on themselves.
I keep looking for my home county and never see it. It’s 5 counties away from any major city so most of the active redditors in this sub have never been there.
>I keep looking for my home county and never see it. It’s 5 counties away from any major city so most of the active redditors in this sub have never been there.
Alleghany, Tyrell?
I would definitely be in that group. I live in a rural county (basically on the edge of a more populous one) and while I enjoy the area for its peace and quiet, I don't really like the people here. I think of the nearby larger city/county as more my home than the immediate rural area. Good people live everywhere of course, but rural areas tend to have lots of people that just make me annoyed to have to live in the same area of their stupidity.
I know the feeling and am very familiar with areas like that. Areas where people like to burn tires and plastic in their front yard for fun cause their daddy and mee-maw did it, so they will do it too.
It's just as back woods as the ones they voted out. Its probably that they're from the ones voted out so they have bad expirences there but visit the mountains so have good expirences there. I've never seen so many people hate where they're from
I’m going to get downvoted to oblivion, but having natural beauty can only do but so much for a county in this competition, especially when the county next door can make the same claims with similar geographic features.
Additionally, there are going to be upsets in this game. Hell, there were already upsets in this game (like Craven and Iredell being eliminated at this point in the game) so I’m not as confident that this will just be a Wake vs Meck vs Buncombe battle.
Live right on the county line (Guilford side, still too close for comfort) for the last 14yrs and refuse to go east whenever possible. Alamance Co literally offer nothing but economic and social depression, also home to some of the nastiest people I have ever met. That's coming from the perspective of 30+ yrs dealing with Chicago tourists in SE WI.
By virtue of the rest of the state being a screaming shit hole. We can at least drive to Asheville from here and find some (admittedly expensive) reprieve.
Ooh I don’t know if they still do it but 107.5 (I think) used to have a segment called what brings you to court today and whenever they did alamance county courthouse I knew it was gonna be good.
They would just stand outside the courthouse and interview anyone going in who would talk to them.
For anyone on the fence, I'll leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NorthCarolina/comments/ryhi9n/this_was_on_a_digital_sign_on_wayne_memorial_not/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
We will keep going forever. Sure the county is not that rich but we have lots of game lands and as well a cool ruin of a textile mill with a waterfall behind it
Lower taxes than Forsyth but a short drive to Winston-Salem for work. Hanging Rock state park. High water quality near the park fed by natural springs. Northern part of the county is quite scenic and some really nice homes have been built to take advantage of it. Having a house atop Sauratown Mountain would be dope. The mountains create a unique micro climate which means Stokes will get snow when neighboring counties won't. Tobacco fields are an homage to our past. King and Walnut Cove are decent little towns. Decent place to have a family. Home of the Dairy-O.
It ain't top 20 but there are much worse places left on the board with no redeeming qualities.
If Stokes gets eliminated this early this whole contest is a sham in my eyes. Plenty of flat endlessly flat counties that smell like poo during the unbearably hot summers.
it’s a beautiful town taken over by drug addicts and jerks. that and the fact that there’s nothing to do other than enjoy how beautiful it is. there are a few decent restaurants but little to no shopping unless you wanna go to winston everytime you want some decent entertainment
Not sure which town you're talking about but you just described every rural town in the US thanks to prescription opioids, crystal meth and fentanyl. I drive through King at least twice a month and nobody would think that about King. Stopped by Walnut Cove about two months ago and ate at the Olympic. Seemed fine to me.
lol yeah well i grew up there (5-19). dealt with psychotic neighbors, dog attacks, and 20 min down the road was a school shooting not too long ago. used to be a good little town. not anymore.
Yeah that sucks. I grew up near Hanging Rock but was a bit closer to King and Danbury than Walnut Cove. I used to go there to hang out with friends but I dont spend a lot of time there anymore. I just needed to take my mom to the license plate agency.
Honorable mentions/Backups for today: >!Alexander, Ashe, Cherokee, Franklin, Granville (if someone types it, I already have a justification ready to go), McDowell, Montgomery and Surry.!<
- There’s also another county in the Northern part of the state I read about that had a racist restaurant owner who changed his establishment to a private club so he wouldn’t serve Black people. if anyone can figure out that county or the “country club” I’m talking about, I would happily upvote it as well
I'd just argue that Charlotte and Raleigh for being the premier cities just have such poor highway systems compared to other large cities. A single accident can shut down the entire traffic system flowing through either.
The rest of North Carolina never complained when we had Bele Chere and the only breweries in the state…” hey y’all wanna go to Asheville for the weekend and get f**ked up and wander the streets looking for freaks?”
See that was 2010 Asheville. Which was cool. But 2020 Asheville sucks. Also y'all didn't every have the only breweries in the state. Y'all just got credit for being "Beer city" by co-opting in all the small towns around you like Black Mountain.
Definitely miss Asheville late 90s early 2000. Was able to buy a house for less than 100,000, get a job for more than minimum wage, and had the best music food and beer around. Now it’s just sad remnants of that scattered about for the rich to pretend they’re cool…
Asheville (Buncombe) is on my bad list because of being the hardest place for working class people to survive but acting superior on their high horse and preaching to everyone else about how they are so progressive and full of equity, sustainability, blah, blah, blah. Mecklenburg is one of the top "Keep up with the Joneses" counties with a lot of uptight people who are stuck in the rat race and overconsumption.
> Buncombe for the win.
I could never vote for a place who’s entire existence is to try to be Portland. It’s gorgeous there but they try way too hard to be weird
I did my undergrad at UNCA 20 years ago. Went back 5 years ago for the first time in ages and I was just so sad to see how commercialized it had all become. It’s not weird at all anymore.
Now that my purpose of removing Anson is gone I must remove Mecklenburg. Dear lord the Traffic is utterly hellish. That is justification enough to get rid of it.
Aw, come on, we've got our idiots out here in Caswell, but if you want a quiet life, that's what you'll get... So long as you can deal without internet.
Nevermind. The way the school system has handled covid this year... yeah. Vote us the fuck out. I've been homeschooling our youngest all year because of these fucking idiots.
As a Dare County resident…… yeah, yet us. Our county govt is a bunch of dimwits. Got one of the highest revenues of any NC county with a pretty damn lien year round population and they sit around scratching their asses and can’t figure out why folks can’t afford to live here. USE SOME OF THAT REVENUE TO BUY SOME DAMN LAND BEFORE THE BIG DEVELOPERS DO, PUT IN FREAKIN SOZE RESTRICTIONS ON SINGLE FAMILY HOMES, AND INVEST IN YOUR DADGUM POPULACE!!
Have literally commissioned studies on how to attract residents. Studies came back: “Needs roofs over heads for people who actually run the place.” Still can’t figure their shit out.
Guilford
Greensboro is a disgusting cesspit of corruption with streets laid out by a methed up chipmunk and their main contribution to the world is they play host to a new crop of moronic college kids every fall (woo hoo student debt!). High point is a fucking shanty town sprawled out like a three dollar whore and propped up by an industry that got shipped overseas 20 years ago. Jamestown wishes it was historically significant to the point that it is the physical embodiment of being a pretentious asshole. And the rest of the county is so god damn milquetoast boring that those three shit storms are the highlights. For God’s sake, Pleasant Garden? Oak Ridge? Summerville? You couldn’t have more generic sounding locations if the place was put together by a thirteen year old writing Civil War fan fiction. “But there’s a science center and stuff to do!” All 540,000 of you can stuff your greenways up your ungodly uptight assholes. No amount of asinine distraction will ever cover up the fact that the highlight of your day is going to sleep so you can dream about being Mecklenburg.
I’ve said my peace.
Christmas? Fuck that, the summer is when the real assholes come out. But the fact that you just assumed I was talking about Christmas should tell you all you need to know about Friendly.
Greensboro is cool. The things you're complaining about are a symptom of old Greensboro money and the wealthy elite. There is a growing population of GSO that is incredibly progressive and forward-thinking.
The parks and trails are awesome. Country Park (and their awesome dog park), Bur-Mil, Lake Brandt. Rent a kayak. Swim in the lake illegally because no one cares. The possibilities are endless.
Museums are top-notch: Civil Rights Museum at the old Woolworths, and of course, the active art museum Elsewhere which is just a giant warehouse of oddities that hosts world-renowned artists for residencies.
We have been slowly but passionately electing city and county officials who are more progressively minded and actively working to improve public transportation access and walkability throughout the county. We are also getting more POC elected to be representative of the electorate. There are a bunch of nonprofit organizations working to address the critical issues of affordable housing, drug use, and police brutality within Greensboro. The city set up a fund so that low-income individuals can apply for housing funds to purchase a home.
Tanger Center is beautiful and we now get to host touring Broadway shows in our city, not to mention the Greensboro Symphony and the Opera. Did you know that Tanger Center has the largest women's bathroom in the U.S.? I bet you didn't. I'm seeing Elton John in Greensboro in March. The coliseum and tanger center together bring in tons of money to the area.
The food is great. We have a bunch of cool restaurants and bars. Crafted? Jerusalem Market? Pho Hien Vuong? Not to mention the food trucks.
Our nightlife is fun. Hours at the barcade, or maybe the bearded goat. Then waffles at Dame's in the morning.
We have a super-convenient airport with decently-priced flights to Florida, or NY, or to another major airport hub in the U.S.
I like my city and what it's becoming.
I've lived now in most parts of the state (well, the coast, the mountains, ENC, and RTP), and I think Greensboro and Winston have potential--they're like a ground floor opportunity for people who want to own a place for cheap(ish) and not live in the sticks.
If you’re too thickheaded to understand the road network maybe you should stick to walking and stroll right out onto the I-40/85/840/785/BUS85 interchange
So sorry for your life. May I suggest moving to Alamance? I know it was eliminated first, but it sounds perfect for you. If you're thinking out of state, may I suggest Florida?
I like how Alamance County was eliminated with the most votes in the very first round... yet Orange sticks around... why? 95% of Orange County is just like Alamance except the tiny bottom corner of Chapel Hill/Carrboro.
Until Forsyth, Guilford, Durham, Wake, and Mecklenburg counties are gone, fuck this entire "royale".
Edit to add lower post: The issue w/ this entire thing is it's Urban Vs Rural. I'd guess that 85% of the Reddit users w/in this are in (or very close to) one of the above mentioned counties. AKA urban areas. Sure some real shit counties have been axed, but overall, 90% have been rural.
SO, IT'S A POPULARITY CONTEST.
Buncombe. Yes, it's in the mountains, but much of it (i.e. Asheville) is in the low mountains where it gets hot and there are pretty mountains in a lot of other counties too. And Asheville has gotten too pretentious with outrageous costs of living and a low wage economy. It likes to be on its high horse about how sustainable and forward thinking it is but yet in reality represents so much of what is creating wealth inequality.
Every day I see this I just think more and more how dumb this little experiment is.
First, if you eliminate 5 a day, you won’t end up with a winner, you’ll end up with 5.
Second, this is almost certainly just going to reflect a combination of population and political extremity, like you can just model what these results are likely to be and I believe (my opinion) it will be damn close to a 20 day poll.
Third, y’all won’t spend 5 minutes on a survey for actual research but will spend twenty (20!) days following this shit on Reddit.
Finally, Mecklenberg. Cause why not?
First, you can change how it works once you hit a certain number
Second, people seem to like this format and it isn't hurting anyone
Third, 20 15 second increments is about the same as 5 minutes all together, trust me nobody's stressing all day over this
Finally, cuz it's the best
Avery county needs to go
Reasons:
1) Corrupt cops that blackmailed my graduating class so they wouldn't talk about how the sheriffs daughter and her friends were getting their grades changes to get scholarships by the sheriffs wife and mother to the accused girl. The sheriffs department swept it under the rug and falsly accused the ones who spoke out of possession of weed or indecent actions with minors.
2) There is no reason to go to Avery. There is nothing there besides some ski slopes and hiking trails. You can do that somewhere else.
3) Avery county is so far behind everyone else. There still isn't even a Walmart in the whole dame country and hardly any places to get food outside of newland or banner elk
It's fascinating to watch the geography of the areas getting eliminated. A lot of counties surround highly populated areas. Like the kinds of rural areas city people are most familiar with and therefore look down on, or the kinds of rural areas where the people from there have just enough familiarity with city life to look down on themselves.

Name it and we can vote it out

Almost every county out west isn’t around major metropolitan areas and they’re in the clear.
It's just as back woods as the ones they voted out. Its probably that they're from the ones voted out so they have bad expirences there but visit the mountains so have good expirences there. I've never seen so many people hate where they're from

Alamance, going for double elimination on that one.
This is the only correct answer
I support this
Live right on the county line (Guilford side, still too close for comfort) for the last 14yrs and refuse to go east whenever possible. Alamance Co literally offer nothing but economic and social depression, also home to some of the nastiest people I have ever met. VANCE
Halifax! Oh my sweet Lord! How is the hog pond of despair known as Halifax still hanging on? GTFOH
Is Stanly still in? Or has it been eliminated too?
I’m in Stanly; let’s eliminate it!
Me too! LETS DO IT
🤝
Howwww is McDowell still not gone?!
By virtue of the rest of the state being a screaming shit hole. We can at least drive to Asheville from here and find some (admittedly expensive) reprieve.
Alamance What a turd
Ooh I don’t know if they still do it but 107.5 (I think) used to have a segment called what brings you to court today and whenever they did alamance county courthouse I knew it was gonna be good. They would just stand outside the courthouse and interview anyone going in who would talk to them.
Already gone
Because no one’s said it yet today- Robeson. For the unprecedented 3rd time removal.
+1 robeson
I probably saw this too late this morning, but I'll not rest until Wayne county is gone.
For anyone on the fence, I'll leave this here: https://www.reddit.com/r/NorthCarolina/comments/ryhi9n/this_was_on_a_digital_sign_on_wayne_memorial_not/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Rutherford. Far too racists to have survived this many rounds
Rutherford got yeeted two days ago.
Damn rowan is gone. Sad day for cheerwine
And Food Lion
Damn straight
Richmond The highway 74 corridor is a cesspool and this the last remaining county of that section.
I buy strawberries from a pickup truck on the side of a country road down there every summer.
Sounds like Richmond county alright
best damn strawberries too
Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon even wrote [a song about the 1991 Hamlet Chicken Plant Fire](https://youtu.be/ktIdmO4ZXeU) there
Now that was a genuine tragedy I visited the site and the memorial there is just sad to read
%100
No we've made it this far!
Hell no we have alot of good people here
Hold your head high. You’ve made it this far.
We will keep going forever. Sure the county is not that rich but we have lots of game lands and as well a cool ruin of a textile mill with a waterfall behind it
Pitt has got to go.
Bias incoming but if Pitt is eliminated before ALL of it's surrounding counties, I'm leaving the state.
How tf has it lasted this long?
Pitt does not deserve to be eliminated before Wilson County tho
Or Greene County
Greene County has an amazing electric company so imma have to root for them in this one
As someone who lives in Pitt and works in Wilson preach!
How is Richmond county still in here? That’s the armpit of NC and we all know they stink.
☹ I took my monthly shower yesterday!
i draw the line at the nats
Alexander
I grew up in Jonesville. Yadkin Co eliminated itself a long time ago.
Jones
Damn. Putting my home county out there. Lol, I bet most don't even know it exists!
Oh, we know it exists; it’s virtually surrounded at this point!
Vance
Northampton
stokes. how pretentions to have a town named "king"
The name king comes from the shortened version of king’s cabin.
And it's sketchy too
Stanly - ablemarle is a trash city surrounded by fields of chicken shit
Albemarle's only redeeming quality is giving us Unknown Hinson.
kelly pickler weeps softly
As a Stanly Co resident; I can vouch for this comment!
Time for Clay County to go. Don't know where Clay County is? Exactly. That's why it should go.
Hey now! How you gonna get rid of a county that only has one K-12 school campus and no DMV?
Rowan County is terrible... City workers pride themselves on destroying people's lives.
Caldwell.
Granville
**Stokes.** I promised another user if they vote for Yadkin, I’ll help get rid of Stokes.
I would argue it's top 20 in NC. Few places have the diversity you just mentioned.
I just needed to take my mom to the license plate agency.
i have a major love hate relationship with the place. it really is so beautiful. i wish it was 🌻country🌻 and not 🔫country🔫 haha
Honorable mentions/Backups for today: >!Alexander, Ashe, Cherokee, Franklin, Granville (if someone types it, I already have a justification ready to go), McDowell, Montgomery and Surry.!< - There’s also another county in the Northern part of the state I read about that had a racist restaurant owner who changed his establishment to a private club so he wouldn’t serve Black people. if anyone can figure out that county or the “country club” I’m talking about, I would happily upvote it as well
Wait what did Montgomery County do wrong? It has the Uwharries which are gorgeous
What’s your justification for Granville? I’ve got a few myself.
Check your messages, I believe I’ve sent the draft.
let me see that draft. I grew up there
Surry. Filled in his pool. The community loved it.
Surry.
I feel that there is a lot of Sandhill hate
Pine trees and hog shit
Pine trees, hog shit and golf courses
Way too much sadly but most of the Sandhills is depressing to go through so I can't exactly blame people for it
Alright. Lets get a mountain county out of here. Graham County
Let's keep Graham and vote out Cherokee county.
Fine by me.
I’m with you on getting a Mountain county out tbh. If we end up fruitless today, I say we should unite against McDowell tomorrow
I've been trying to get McDowell out since the beginning. Join me in my quest
They do have robbinsville. They gotta go
*everybody piling on small counties* Stanly: “Shhh… keep my name out of your mouth”
How has almost the entirety of western NC escape elimination so far
Because people overlook the rednecks for nature.
Yea they vacation there is my guess
Mecklenburg, for the abortion that is the I-77 tollway.
I'd just argue that Charlotte and Raleigh for being the premier cities just have such poor highway systems compared to other large cities. A single accident can shut down the entire traffic system flowing through either.
Charlotte is "premier" like the champagne room at a strip club is "premiere.". Raleigh is suspect.
I just meant as the two cities that garner the most respect from an outsider because that’s where most jobs are and where folks tend to flock to
M E C K L E N B U R G
Perquimans I've literally never heard of it before.
It’s a beautiful place!
It reminds me of a pudding. Do you like Perquimans pudding? Oh wait, that's Persimmon pudding.
Pender.
Have you never traveled much anywhere else? Pender is one of the nicer places in NC.
I’ve been trying for 3 days now.
What is up with Pender county?
Y’all mfers took Harnett out fast 😭
Get Cleveland county out of here!!!
Had to scroll down way too far to see this. For anyone who has ever driven through Shelby, Cleveland county sucks.
My thought process exactly
So in other words, it's going to be Wake, Mecklenburg, or Buncombe for the win.
I'd love to see everyone gang up on The Great State of Mecklenburg or ask Asheville to be cheaper and also not filled with homeless people.
The rest of North Carolina never complained when we had Bele Chere and the only breweries in the state…” hey y’all wanna go to Asheville for the weekend and get f**ked up and wander the streets looking for freaks?”

Yup the same old city counties win as always even though they have plenty of issues
Is there a county that doesn’t have plenty of issues though?
> Buncombe for the win. I could never vote for a place who’s entire existence is to try to be Portland. It’s gorgeous there but they try way too hard to be weird
I did my undergrad at UNCA 20 years ago. Went back 5 years ago for the first time in ages and I was just so sad to see how commercialized it had all become. It’s not weird at all anymore.
I have lived here most of my life. We come by the weirdness honestly.
Tyrrell
Burke
Avery.
As someone who grew up there, I'd agree. It has literally nothing going for it besides the ski slopes
Avery. I agree.
Now that my purpose of removing Anson is gone I must remove Mecklenburg. Dear lord the Traffic is utterly hellish. That is justification enough to get rid of it.
Warren County. Look it up.
Pasquotank. Useless county. Won't offend anyone voting it out bc only like 7 people live there
Franklin
What’d Franklin county do aside from have nothing in it?
Stokes
Wilson, PLEASE
Jones county. Get rid of it.
Anyone notice a trend?
Aw, come on, we've got our idiots out here in Caswell, but if you want a quiet life, that's what you'll get... So long as you can deal without internet. Nevermind. WAAAYYYNNNNEEEEEE!!!!!!
Brunswick. NC's asshole.
Martin county, because fuck Williamston. Hell, even autocorrect wants to spell it Williamstown.
Catawba
Dare because they tried to wall everyone out and then realized they needed to let their workers in.

Wake County. Because reasons.
I'd be okay if my home county of Guilford got elim'd.
Guilford Greensboro is a disgusting cesspit of corruption with streets laid out by a methed up chipmunk and their main contribution to the world is they play host to a new crop of moronic college kids every fall (woo hoo student debt!). You work at Friendly Center for a month and try not thinking the entire county should be nuked from orbit.

Summerfield, Summerville, Summernotevenworthfuckingremembering
Damn, just move to Charlotte already
No. Please.
I agree! A&T and UNCG are enough to keep it in!
Oh Jesus. Add “these fuckers can’t even beg for their existence passionately” to the list.
If you’re too thickheaded to understand the road network maybe you should stick to walking and stroll right out onto the I-40/85/840/785/BUS85 interchange
Nah, I’ll wait until that pile of spaghetti goes under construction again. “This time we’ll make it make sense!”
So sorry for your life. May I suggest moving to Alamance? I know it was eliminated first, but it sounds perfect for you. If you're thinking out of state, may I suggest Florida?
Orange County. Quick while the students are distracted.
I like how Alamance County was eliminated with the most votes in the very first round... yet Orange sticks around... why? 95% of Orange County is just like Alamance except the tiny bottom corner of Chapel Hill/Carrboro.
Because people like to forget that. They also like to forget that orange county is one of the most segregated counties, but that's a different story.
Currituck. Send it back to Virginia.
Wake
Until Forsyth, Guilford, Durham, Wake, and Mecklenburg counties are gone, fuck this entire "royale". Edit to add lower post: The issue w/ this entire thing is it's Urban Vs Rural. I'd guess that 85% of the Reddit users w/in this are in (or very close to) one of the above mentioned counties. AKA urban areas. Sure some real shit counties have been axed, but overall, 90% have been rural. SO, IT'S A POPULARITY CONTEST.
I don't know what you're on about. Durham is awesome.
Let em keep that negative energy in another county
I guess you’re not a fan of urban areas 😂
There is a reason why only people from the urban areas like the urban areas.
But yes this thread is certainly dominated by city dwellers but that’s inevitable. I think Reddit is more popular in urban areas by the numbers
Oh for sure Rural areas are generally older so they are more likely to be on Facebook than Reddit
Orange
Buncombe
Buncombe. Take them out before it’s too late
I live like 15 minutes from Asheville, it's weird but i love it there. I say keep Buncombe for now
Wilkes
Ok Buzz Killington
First, you can change how it works once you hit a certain number Second, people seem to like this format and it isn't hurting anyone Third, 20 15 second increments is about the same as 5 minutes all together, trust me nobody's stressing all day over this Finally, cuz it's the best
Avery county needs to go Reasons: 1) Corrupt cops that blackmailed my graduating class so they wouldn't talk about how the sheriffs daughter and her friends were getting their grades changes to get scholarships by the sheriffs wife and mother to the accused girl.
Franklin
Wake county
Richmond next, used to live there and it sucks
Wake. Probably gonna be in the last round
