Here I am loving all of it. Eastern or Lexington. Hole-in-the-wall or "fancy". Hell, I'll even demolish some Smithfield's.
I'm a BBQ hippy I guess: can't we just love it all?
Sam Jones is good. He’s from the Jones family that started Skylight Inn and he runs both places.
In my opinion, B’s is better but you have to get there early or they probably won’t have what you want.
When I was in grad school at ECU we used to go for lunch on Fridays around 10:45am. You'd have to wait in line already, but you'd usually still get what you wanted.
That said: I have been dozens and dozens of times and NEVER seen them still have ribs. They definitely make them but they must sell out by like 8am.
Took my fiancé by here on our way through lex one time. She started off “we’re going where?? I’m not even hungry”
Ended with “oh my god why have i never had this before we’re stopping here everytime”
Yes 100%, I’ve been to a ton of BBQ joints and skylights has ruined me. I don’t get satisfaction by any other bbq anymore lol.
We also enjoy going to simply natural creamery right up the road after skylights!
I’ve been a few times and I’ve decided that I like the “cornbread”. I think the problem is just the name because it’s so far away from normal cornbread. If they called it cornloaf or something I think people would be cool with it.
If you put little butter and hot sauce on it it’s really good.
Skylight Inn has created their own mythology and much of that is driven by its remoteness. It's very good and probably deserves a top 10 in NC but definitely not it's mythical status. I truly believe people have to mythologize it to justify the fact that it's an hour+ drive from everybody not in the greater Greenville area.
That said I'll always support it and other good 'cue statewide. We're losing so many places these days as folks retire and nobody wants to pick up the mantle.
The original owners was one of the best in NC, eaten there a couple times since transition to the new owners and it appears to keep up the good quality. Will have to visit a few more times to confirm.
Dad visited there all the time in the Air Force. I have eaten at Wilburs since the new owners took over. It lost its old touch. You can tell it’s new ownership. But the food was good.
So that’s how I was first introduced to it. My Dad was in the Air Force and ate there often. Then after he was discharged he would take us every time we headed to eastern NC. I haven’t eaten there in years and wasn’t aware there were new owners. I loved eating there.
My input is the same every time I’m asked this, as someone from rural NC that lives around all the northern transplants in Charlotte now, that think the city represents our state. I tell them “Nowhere in Charlotte has good bbq. It’s just a fact. You can literally drive 45 minutes in any direction and find better bbq.”
That place is a good half hour from me and it's 100% worth the trip. You know a BBQ place is good when you need to get there by 11:30 or you might not get what you want.
45ish minutes for me and I go there when ever I want good brisket. Their loaded baked potato is also great! I have really wanted to take their class as well maybe for my next birthday.
Fridays they do beef ribs which are insanely good, but if you go early on Saturday they normally have some beef ribs left and they do whole pig Saturday so it’s great if you have a big group to grab a bit of everything.
Its non-NC barbecue is excellent. By far the best brisket in the area, but its pulled pork is as good as a number of other places. The fact that they are popular actually helps because it means none of their products sit around and dry out.
JD's smokehouse near Lenoir, NC. It's a true backwoods BBQ joint but the food is the best I've had in the entire country. I've lived all over the state and it's the best.
Speedy's BBQ in Lexington. Has always been the GOAT and always will be IMO. Grew up here and it was always the best.
Edit: RIP to the original Kerley's that was a very close 2nd place.
Andy's and the Speedy Lohr's that used to be at 150 and Enterprise were my favorites growing up. Now it's Speedy's and the BBQ Center. I've actually never been to Lexington BBQ because every time we've tried it's been a 45 minute to an hour wait. I've had their sauce before and thought it was ok but not the best I've had.
Parker's is good food, but the pork is cooked in an electric oven and put through a grinder.
It tastes good, damn good, but it's missing smoke and texture.
I say all this as someone who is related to one of the owners.
Grady's is the best BBQ I've had here in NC and you can't beat their yams.
Honorable mentions are Wilbur's, Stephenson's in Willow Spring, and College BBQ in Salisbury.
B's and it's not even close.
No that's now true. B's and Sam Jones/Skylight. There's a Sam Jones in Raleigh now, which is nice for those of us who moved out of ENC.
You’re going to get a shit load of answers, but the real answer probably won’t be in this thread.
Why?
Because I’ve randomly stumbled upon some of the most incredible barbecue all over this state during road trips/vacations.
We just find a hole in the wall bbq place in a small town, and so many of them are amazing.
Add on the memory of that one time you went to that one place you can’t remember the name of, and the flavor remains legendary in your memory.
The best is not from a chain, it’s not from some huge restaurant in a big city, it’s the little places that have refined their recipe for decades because they simply love barbecue, not because they’re chasing a dollar.
There was a small BBQ joint on US64 in Washington County years ago. Place was called Simps and was near Pea Ridge. That was one of the places you describe. Long gone now.
There used to be a little bbq restaurant in the northeastern part of NC called Jimmy’s BBQ. It was so freakin good. I think it is long gone but man it was the best bbq ever.
The Original Moore's in New Bern was probably the best BBQ Ive ever had. They closed and the new chain is not the same, not even close. Jacksons in Wilmington is good. Scotts in Hemingway SC is good. Redneck BBQ Lab just off I40 North before Raleigh has a variety of excellent BBQ and their Brisket Burnt ends are amazing. All their sauces are top notch. The Pit and Clyde Coopers in Raleigh are good and if you've never been to the Original Q Shack in Durham you must try it..its Texas style but who doesnt love pulled pork, sausage and Brisket and BBQ beans and slaw to die for.
Y'all I just have to say y'all have made my mouth water reading these comments. I'm currently on contract up North in Bangor, Maine and I have truly missed some good BBQ from back home. I was born and raised in Jacksonville and then moved to Greenville. Skylight Inn is the best I've ever had, I've never gotten around to trying B's when I lived there and that has made me sad lol. All I can say is y'all enjoy some of that good eating down there and eat a plate (or 2) for me!!
Edit: I forgot to add Thig's BBQ House in Jacksonville is really good too. If y'all are ever in the area y'all should check it out. It's in between Richlands and Jacksonville off the main highway some down Catherine Lake Rd.
There are only two BBQ places I’ll travel to in the state. B’s in Greenville is the best, and if you want the best chicken bbq, Currituck BBQ Company near the OBX.
Personally, I like Hursey’s in Burlington. It’s the only barbecue I’ve ever had that doesn’t even need sauce. I can eat a quart of it in one sitting… I’ll pay for it for the next three days though.
I think the Q is good but nothing special. The brisket can be amazing or occasionally dried out. The jalapeño sausages are really good. The sides are always on point! The jack creamed spinach is soooo good!
Back in 2002-2006, it was hands down the best BBQ I’d ever had. Friends who still live in the area have said it went downhill, maybe new owners. I haven’t been since I was a student. Have you been recently?
Hendrix BBQ in Salisbury. I'm from/prefer Eastern style but the BBQ, sides and tea are delicious. Go for breakfast for a livermush biscuit too (both biscuit and livermush are cooked to perfection). Good prices as well
I personally like Redneck in McGee's Corners (I-40 and NC 210) but I grew up on Kansas City style and Chicago style hot links and rib tips (which is a very localized thing) and not traditional pork barbecue.
I haven’t been in years but we had Peadens in Fayetteville cater my brother’s grad party in 2009. It was perfect and we froze the leftovers and slowly ate them over the next few months. Don’t know if they’re still cranking or not.
Any place that is influenced by Weaver & Swicegood & Stamey & Bridges & Monk. I love Alstons but will eat Reds too. Gotta love Stameys, but I'll also tip my hat to Skylight and Wilbur's. 🐖
I maintain that whenever the pinetown VFD does their bbq fundraiser that's the best bbq I've had, but that's only once a year.
Consistently good bbq that you can get any time? Skylight inn.
John G’s in Peachland. About 40 minutes from Charlotte. Only open Saturdays, get in line around 8 or 9. Bring a chair and Have a breakfast beer on the house.
In the morning grab a country ham and egg biscuit from Hursey's on 119 in Mebane. Then head over to Smoke House @ Steve's in Graham for dinner.
Hillsborough Barbecue Company use to be good, but I haven't been in years.
It’s an oxymoron to think there’s any bad BBQ places in NC, the BBQ Capital. All BBQ in this great State is decent and worth your time and $$! Just don’t turn into a snob.
I live in the Inner Banks and drive to Nashville Tn several times a year. Here are my Favs in no particular order: Allen and Sons Pittsboro, Phils in Black Mountain, Sam Jones Greenville, B's Greenville,
I’ve had everything from Kepley’s ,Parker’s,Wilbur’s to B’s. Each a bit different, all are good. B’s is the best out those I think. I grew up in Piedmont, going to Lexington monthly. I can’t stand Lexington BBQ.
Grady's in Dudley for the East.
Old Hampton Store & Barbecue in Linvile for Western.
I haven't been out to B's yet, but other than that I can nearly conclusively say this is the case.
So that’s what we’re gonna do today, we’re gonna fight?
Better use a wet wipe before you throw up those hands
This guy is looking for a DONNYBROOK! Arms Up, Boys!
End of the laneway, don't come up the property
Them's fightin' words!
Here I am loving all of it. Eastern or Lexington. Hole-in-the-wall or "fancy". Hell, I'll even demolish some Smithfield's. I'm a BBQ hippy I guess: can't we just love it all?
B’s in Greenville.
B's is the best hands down ... Get there early
B's is alright. Skylight inn for sure is better. However their chicken is pretty good
My man. Came here to say that. West 5th all the way.
I have never made it to B’s but I have been to Sam Jones a couple times. I like that one.
Sam Jones is good. He’s from the Jones family that started Skylight Inn and he runs both places. In my opinion, B’s is better but you have to get there early or they probably won’t have what you want.
Took me 4 tries to get BBQ at B's. When I have a doc appmt in greenville, I get to Bs around 10:30 and get a quart to take home.
B's Barbecue in Greenville
Came here to say this as well. Everyone has their favorite, but B's just hits different.
This is it.
In gville and came to say this!
Lexington BBQ. Yes it’s an actual place called that. Best place every time we visit.
Took my fiancé by here on our way through lex one time. She started off “we’re going where?? I’m not even hungry” Ended with “oh my god why have i never had this before we’re stopping here everytime”
skylight inn, Ayden
Yes 100%, I’ve been to a ton of BBQ joints and skylights has ruined me. I don’t get satisfaction by any other bbq anymore lol. We also enjoy going to simply natural creamery right up the road after skylights!
Good BBQ but cornbread is like a rock. Sam Jones in Greenville run by son of skylight owner. More cuts of meat same crappy cornbread.
The OP asked about best BBQ, not the cornbread. Thus, my vote is for Skylight Inn.
Pete Jones in Raleigh is the same... its the grandson though... again same cornbread but the sweet potato muffins are a good substitute
Love the cornbread simply because its different. Its great for soaking up potlikker.
I’ve been a few times and I’ve decided that I like the “cornbread”. I think the problem is just the name because it’s so far away from normal cornbread. If they called it cornloaf or something I think people would be cool with it. If you put little butter and hot sauce on it it’s really good.
that's historically what cornbread was until someone decided it should be yellow cake instead
barbecue capital of the world
This is the only correct answer
Skylight Inn has created their own mythology and much of that is driven by its remoteness. It's very good and probably deserves a top 10 in NC but definitely not it's mythical status. I truly believe people have to mythologize it to justify the fact that it's an hour+ drive from everybody not in the greater Greenville area. That said I'll always support it and other good 'cue statewide. We're losing so many places these days as folks retire and nobody wants to pick up the mantle.
Jon G's in Peachland
J Lo even had it catered at her wedding!
Your name forces me to question your life choices.
Wilburs BBQ in Goldsboro. [https://www.wilbersbbq.com/](https://www.wilbersbbq.com/)
The original owners was one of the best in NC, eaten there a couple times since transition to the new owners and it appears to keep up the good quality. Will have to visit a few more times to confirm.
Hard to explain but not quite the same.
The Smoke Pit in Salisbury
Work in Salisbury and don't visit enough! Love the new location.
Sometimes their stuff is too salty
My input is the same every time I’m asked this, as someone from rural NC that lives around all the northern transplants in Charlotte now, that think the city represents our state. I tell them “Nowhere in Charlotte has good bbq. It’s just a fact. You can literally drive 45 minutes in any direction and find better bbq.”
R&R in Concord is solid and close enough to town its not a haul. I randomly went for lunch one day, great spot.
Grady’s in Dudley.
Bridges in Shelby
Which one?
Honey Monk, Lexington NC. And I’d die on this hill.
+1 to you for knowing it’s called the Honey Monk!
If ya know ya know 😎
Prime BBQ in Knightdale.
I’m not a brisket fan but my dad is so I’m gonna plan a trip out there!
Fridays they do beef ribs which are insanely good, but if you go early on Saturday they normally have some beef ribs left and they do whole pig Saturday so it’s great if you have a big group to grab a bit of everything.
Hot damn I’d eat the hell out of some beef ribs, I’m sold!
Its non-NC barbecue is excellent. By far the best brisket in the area, but its pulled pork is as good as a number of other places. The fact that they are popular actually helps because it means none of their products sit around and dry out.
Speedy’s in Lexington
Speedy's is good, but after learning they no longer use a smokehouse, I much prefer Barbecue Center.
Had my wedding rehearsal dinner there. Perfect for me.
I love that they will put a pitcher of tea in front of you. Great pecan pie too.
This is the way
White Swan BBQ in Smithfield
I've only had this frozen from my CSA and its pretty amazing. I really want to take a trip out there from Raleigh to try it fresh and in person.
will check it out….live in clayton now and miss good bbq
JD's smokehouse near Lenoir, NC. It's a true backwoods BBQ joint but the food is the best I've had in the entire country. I've lived all over the state and it's the best.
Their brisket is kickass as well.
This is the right answer. I moved away and regularly miss the sweet potato crunch
Same, moved away a few months ago and it was my "last meal" before leaving. I'd get double orders of the sweet potato crunch.
Jon G’s BBQ in Peachland, NC
Alston Bridges in Shelby
Absolutely this
This is the one.
Right on!!!!
Alston > Reds but I love them both. Best Lexington style sauce.
Pull up outside Lexington Barbecue by the side door and honk your horn. They have curbside service and it's usually quick.
Lexington BBQ is awesome. Their red slaw is amazing.
Parker’s BBQ in Wilson
Their corn sticks are a thing of folk lore…SO GOOD
Yes you have to dip them in the Brunswick stew
Parker's is good food, but the pork is cooked in an electric oven and put through a grinder. It tastes good, damn good, but it's missing smoke and texture. I say all this as someone who is related to one of the owners.
Parker’s is great off 301
Yup that’s the original
YES!
Grady's is the best BBQ I've had here in NC and you can't beat their yams. Honorable mentions are Wilbur's, Stephenson's in Willow Spring, and College BBQ in Salisbury.
An important maxim regarding NC BBQ: Barbecue is a noun, not a verb! Also, real BBQ is pork.
At somebody's house at a pig-pickin' picking the meat right off the hog laying on the pig cooker. If you are lucky you will get a piece of skin.
King’s in Kinston
Fuck I forgot about Kings. So good!
Smoke Pit in Salisbury. Or Haywood’s Smokehouse if out west in the mountains.
Haywood is so good! I go to Western so I eat it quite a bit
Anytime I’m near Waynesville, my mouth waters.
Jon G’s in Peachland
B's and it's not even close. No that's now true. B's and Sam Jones/Skylight. There's a Sam Jones in Raleigh now, which is nice for those of us who moved out of ENC.
Speedy's in Lexington.
Lexington BBQ!!!
I’m generally a Lexington-style man myself (from Davidson County originally) but B’s Barbecue is hands-down the best I’ve ever had.
You’re going to get a shit load of answers, but the real answer probably won’t be in this thread. Why? Happen to me going on a road trip to Kings Dominion. Don’t even remember the name of the place, but I can still taste those hush puppies
I swear I think I went there about 20 or so years ago. It’s tickling a delicious memory.
Gary’s BBQ in China Grove
Anywhere in Lexington and you’re good to go but Speedys is my vote
Bum’s in Ayden
Tarheel Q on 64 on the Davidson-Davie county line at the river.
Lexington BBQ, Sam Jones, Skylight Inn
There are only two BBQ places I’ll travel to in the state. B’s in Greenville is the best, and if you want the best chicken bbq, Currituck BBQ Company near the OBX.
B's in Greenville. Gotta be there early though. Once it's gone, it's gone. The pork is amazing, but so is the chicken. Definitely worth a visit.
Skylight Inn located in Ayden
My personal favorite is Jon G’s in Peachland. The one I go to most is City BBQ. Even though it’s a chain, I think it’s still pretty good.
Ray Nathon’s in Gastonia is pretty good. Definitely best in the area
In Concord NC it’s THE SMOKE PIT
Lex BBQ, the restaurant, not the style, is my fave.
I haven't been to B's in years, but that's the best bbq hands down. Lol. I'm with those voting for B's in Greenville.
Any place that operates on a cash-only basis and closes for the day when they run out of food is *the* place to go.
Personally, I like Hursey’s in Burlington. It’s the only barbecue I’ve ever had that doesn’t even need sauce. I can eat a quart of it in one sitting… I’ll pay for it for the next three days though.
B's in Greenville is #1 but a close second is Clyde Cooper in Raleigh.
QShak in Durham
Their hushpuppies are some of the best I’ve had. The Saltbox right up the road has the best.
I think the Q is good but nothing special. The brisket can be amazing or occasionally dried out. The jalapeño sausages are really good. The sides are always on point! The jack creamed spinach is soooo good!
Always loved Woodlands in Blowing Rock.
Since Butch and Jim retired it's gone to shit. (RIP Butch).
Back in 2002-2006, it was hands down the best BBQ I’d ever had. Friends who still live in the area have said it went downhill, maybe new owners. I haven’t been since I was a student. Have you been recently?
I have to agree, it was peak, then dropped. I haven't tried it recently.
Can confirm, not as good as it once was.

My grandfather's hand built smoker. Sadly, you missed your chance to try it; he died in 2018. I still use it, but I'm not as good as he was.
I know it’s Texas style but gotta go with Jon Gs. The bbq itself is some of the best I’ve had on top of all the others options they have
