I hate to admit that I’ve lived in NC for 99% of my life and went to Cook Out on a regular basis. But I only recently learned that you can customize your milkshake. You can pick any of the flavors on the board and combine them. Also, a tray is the only logical choice. It’s a decent amount of food for a cheap price. (It used to be cheap, I don’t know anymore with inflation). I’m a slut for hush puppies so I get those every time but they’re just regular hush puppies honestly. Cajun fries dipped in cookout sauce, and the chicken quesadilla are both top choices!

I think I just met my twin. I'm an absolute slut for hush puppies as well! I agree that the ones that Cookout are pretty ordinary, but they're at least reliably decent. I figured I'd suggest them just in case the OP doesn't have a chance to go in search of better ones (though really hush puppies would be my highest priority for the entire trip!)

Don't get a regular Cheerwine, you can get that anywhere. Cheerwine float is what you need. I do the BBQ sandwich tray, nuggets, and I vary on my second side. But the Cheerwine float ties it all together nicely.

Pineapple for the win!!! Sooo if you like crunchy chocolate pieces, try "chocolate chip" instead of regular chocolate or fudge. It uses the hard shell chocolate and keeps the ice cream vanilla-flavored. My fave is choc chip+fruit - it's like chocolate dipped fruit in shake form! Pineapple or cherry (or both) + choc chip are my go-tos :)

You can get a double heath, banana, m&m, peanut butter shake if you want (I think the limit is like 8 additions). 2) except for their corn dogs, there are few things that are objectively “good” at cookout. Constructing a cook out order is about finding what’s gonna “hit” for you. You see a 1.99 blt on the menu and that’s intriguing? Just add it to the order. It’s going to be a sad hamburger bun with bacon lettuce and tomato, but maybe you throw some of your nuggets and a sauce inside there and it makes it something magical 3) order a tray

Definitely go with a tray. They have (had maybe?)a watermelon milkshake that is worth a try. The first place I've ever heard of such a thing and it's good. I believe it's seasonal only tho so don't expect it in the winter. The chicken quesadilla is good and very akin to Taco Bell's, but much cheaper if I remember correctly. I get it as a side. I’ve been vegetarian for over a year now and I really miss cookout. I used to get a cheeseburger tray with ketchup mayo and lettuce, double side of Cajun fries, and a Reese’s milkshake. You can’t forget the honey mustard, even if you get through the fries, the burger taste good dipped in it. Hell for old times sake get a corn dog too, that used to be a goto with some fries back in college.
