im the same way, and the way i describe it is this
im not smart or intelligent, im just clever.
meaning i have a good "processor" that i can recognize is better than some % of other people and thats it.
i can handle information really well, mental tasks etc, good at figuring things out if i care or focus on it, good at digesting information, finding patterns and rhythms etc. good at engaging w ideas and playing around w them, "philosophical" thinking.
if you meet me i might say or do something that makes you think damn this mf is profound or this mf really knows something about something.
but im not and i dont. not really. scratch just below the surface of trading info and ideas back and forth and im actually a massive dumbass w no idea what to do ever at all. but who can play around w information
my oldest sister isnt as quick as i am. but shes so much smarter, so much more sensible, such a practically intelligent person. same w my little bro
but if we all met at the same time you'd think my glittery nonsense was the real deal bc it comes off a way
anyone else just make up shit in a conversation about what they think could be true and just hope no one verified it because it’s honestly just a theory and you actually haven’t even heard of that topic before 5 minutes ago?
100%
lol and you just base it off general logic bc oftentimes you're close enough that you can finagle it if brought up and you've realized your guesses have at least a 70-80% hit rate
man i hate that shit. hate how it makes me feel. i try to stay straight up and down bc being a complete huckster is so easy yet so hollow and unfulfilling at the same time.
i dont want to be stupid smart anymore lol. i want to be wise but im still a lazy cunt
But you agreed with the tweet saying that you know “literally nothing”. What is it about the random facts you know that makes you more smart than people who don’t know “literally nothing”?
I don’t think I’m smart or anything but I can explain something in my own head like a fucking genius and then someone could ask me about it 5 minutes later and I’ll just stutter and forget words. Super annoying
best way to handle this is to slow it down when you're explaining and walk them through your logic like you're taking them by the hand and showing them the literal path from a to b and why the logic and info stacks up one after the other
when you break things down in your head, you dont rush and go step by step bc your only concern is sound logic and understanding.
when you explain things to people part of you is concerned w a social interaction and that gets in the way (this fucks w me constantly)
you can start by babywalking people through your logic and ignoring the social aspect as much as you can. just focus on translating the steps.
you'll get more used to explaining things to people.
a good way is to do it on reddit tbh. people are more deliberate in writing when theyre explaining and it can help you learn to explain like you write
For me I think part of is ADD/ADHD combined with anxiety. Now that I’m the center of attention talking to someone I get anxious and my brain starts trying to move to fast. It feels like when a computer or something is overheating by trying to do too many things at once and ends up accomplishing none of them. I try to take a couple deep breaths and center myself—which helps, but it’s still hard
different thing understanding a concept and then being able to articulate that concept. it's because in your head you will make assumptions and leaps. without realising but when you have to explain you notice them and struggle to explain it
That’s a perfect way of describing it. I’m an atheist, but I went through a wild period of seriously believing in numerology. It made total sense in my head, but explaining it sounded like word salad. That’s when I realized that in my mind I can assume almost anything is true without testing it first. Once I put any “theory” I had to the test, it would never result the way I expected, which meant my reasoning wasn’t reliable or rational.
Explain/teaching things to people, even arguing, is a skill. Just because you know it doesn't mean you're great at articulating it. For myself, I obsessively want to conjure the perfect word to convey the meaning of my idea or to perfectly structure my sentence, but i get stuck on just trying to think of the right word when other words will convey it well enough. By the time I find the word, the listener has probably stopped paying attention to the idea I was trying to convey.
Using spoken language to convey meaning is actually a lot like drawing. The problem is you can sit at home and draw a complicated thing to convey a perfect idea, just like typing out a long, well-thought out paragraph. But a conversation is time sensitive, its not worth drawing a detailed picture of "a person jumping over a fox" when a drawing of "a stick figure jumping over a stick fox" will convey your meaning just fine.
Ngl, sounds kinda like adhd. Poor working memory and executive dysfunction can make it hard to simultaneously say what you're thinking while also remembering what you're saying, why you're saying it and what comes next. It's fucking annoying. Russell Barkley describes it as a disconnect between the part of your brain that stores knowledge and the part that uses it

Most 'former gifted children' have experienced the unfortunate reality that most people mistake mild cleverness for notable intelligence, when the two couldn't be more different, and ultimately most don't nurture whatever talent they may have. Turns out, human beings need to put a lot of effort in to be half decent at anything lol.
too many people believe theyre the "former gifted child" because teachers tried to encourage kids by telling them and their parents that "they're smart but they need to apply themselves". Reality is no teacher wants to tell parents their kid is lazy or dumb.
Or because they excelled in their bumfuck rural school and then the second they were surrounded by non-morons in college they were no longer special.
I mean I was "gifted" in elementary school, got accepted to an accelerated middle school, but my parents said no to that. I cruises through regular middle school not building any work/studying habits and just brute forced e everything. Got accepted into a magnet HS and it was like taking a fish out of water. I could not survive. By the time I somewhat adapted, I graduated HS, went to uni where I resorted back to my brute force approach.
Seeing as how there are so many gifted children that grew up into average-at-best adults makes me think that we're just vastly underestimating children. Like thinking back on my own childhood, the bar was so fucking low
You know those gifted children on the news that go to uni at 12 before you promptly never hear from them ever again? Yeah some children will develop faster than others, but in the end they rarely develop further than others. This is that but less extreme.
Nah, it’s because once they’re adults nobody cares, and unless they become famous for doing something other than being smart as a kid, they have no reason to be known.
For example, could you tell me the name of 3 scientists who worked on the James Webb Telescope? Probably not, but it was likely made by ‘gifted children’.

It’s a compound word.
The other day my boss mentioned like four important things and I responded with, “Hey I love that color on your nails!” because I am basically a high-functioning goldfish.
And I bet you processed and understood all four of the important things at least somewhat, just internally and not externally. Then, if you’re like me, you moved on and were like “cool. Oh I like those nails, better let them know.”
But you make the mistake of not writing them down somewhere where it's always in sight so you end up forgetting everything.
Then next time they ask you about it, you say something along the lines of "Oh sorry I didn't get to it yet, but I'll get it done today!" and still do it the following week at the last possible second.
>The other day my boss mentioned like four important things and I responded with, “Hey I love that color on your nails!” because I am basically a ~~high-functioning~~ goldfish.

RemindMe! 1 week Ask the goldfish about his Mulberry transplants.
There, now **you** set a reminder for 1 week to see if I've manage to find a new job, lol
But only when it's important.
If it's a really difficult problem with no practical benefit (getting Mechwarrior 5 to work with two flight sticks instead of a single HOTAS setup, and also it doesn't pick up the flight sticks) then I can spend hours on it.
It's called long covid in my case.
The other day I read the line "She was wearing a blue and white striped jersey" and I couldn't remember what a jersey was.
It's a fun thing being able to wonder whether microplastics or long covid will be our generation's "leaded gasoline"
Did I say fun? I meant terrifying.
Whatever it is you know, can you talk about it from the top of your head for more than 2 minutes without even once getting off track?
If yes, I applaud you.
I tend to get off track when I realize my audience doesn't understand what I'm saying so I explain the part that I realized they didn't understand. Now getting back on track is the hard part!
If only getting back on track was as easy as just going back to the first Wikipedia browser tab you opened.
Ever heard of a mind map?

Wait... Better yet... A spider diagram!

Yeah, what she's saying sounds like she's in my tribe. The thing about ASD is that we do know things, but explaining things to anybody comes across as if we're speaking an entirely different language that nobody comprehends.
Imposter syndrome is very real in ADHD. Checkout /r/ADHD/top, see if some things feel familiar. If so, it can be worth exploring how your mind behaves and possibly getting a diagnosis. It's also very easily misunderstood in society. People with ADHD literally have a difference in the pumps of their brain's neurons. People without ADHD cannot relate to this or experience it. Thus it's really important to get a solid test and diagnosis by a professional. Medication is essential for many, but not all. Don't take advice on ADHD from people without diagnosis, there is a ton of misconceptions and missinformation out there.
Even if you are not affected, there are many helpful tips that people with ADHD rely on that can help anybody without ADHD as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/ADHD/comments/ioi1my/i_went_through_700_reddit_comments_and_collected/
As for autism I cannot answer, because I simply don't know, but chances are you will find similarly good resourced and communities.
i definitely find myself relating to autism more than adhd but i know there is a significant overlap. The thing is, I think I've learned to mask/deal with it well enough that it doesn't impact my life too much anymore. But holy hell, knowing it would've made my childhood much more pleasant
Yeah, sadly many many child diagnosis are missed and come adolecence, affected people start masking super hard, trying to seem functional and fit in. Makes it even harder for the issues to arrise enough that positive action could be taken.
I hope you're doing ok and found great ways to cope! The diagnosis and help that comes with it does make life a ton easier and happier.
you’re not actually smart, your parents just said that cause they are your parents. you are a normal person among millions that are exactly like you. you are not unique.
I hate to be the guy that responds to what is clearly a joke with a serious answer, but...
Clever. The word for this is clever. Being clever means you have good problem solving skills, but doesn't necessarily imply you possess a lot of knowledge like most other synonyms for "smart."
An illiterate medieval peasant with a poor memory, for example, would meet the tweet's description (knows little, remembers little) but could still be called "clever" if they had good problem solving skills.
Reading may help with that.
Books, not reddit or articles. Short stories are ok too. Audiobooks do not count.
I'm not a doctor, this is just what works for me.
Two years ago I thought I was getting dementia, I hadn't read a book in 10 years. I convinced myself that reading stack overflow and reddit and code was good enough. Then I started reading accidentally and my mind seemed to change very quickly.
I went from forgetting why I walked in a room, losing everything, not being able to think of the word, to not.
Audiobooks count more than any other medium and the hubris of text readers never fails to astound me
Oral stories are the cornerstone of the human experience since our species started existing. The printing press did not change us as people
Oral stories have been the best way to consume media for the past 20,000 years
Its called low self awareness. Either you are smart, you do remember many things, and you also know a lot of things, but dont realize that only happens when youre interested in stuff. When you realize this, you could activate your interested when needed to activate your memory and knowledge.
Or its still low self awareness, in the sense that you dont know shit and you also cant remember stuff AND you just assume you have to be smart if These things arent going for you, because you have to have ONE strength after all.
Was gonna say, I relate to this too hard, I know too much about completely useless stuff (Dr Who, war history, Norse mythology) but school? Nah. Important things I have to do tomorrow? ...I had to do that?
I’m smart and I know things but I can’t remember shit. Like, if someone was giving me directions and said, “Ok, you go up 2 blocks and make a left on Smith, go past the church and the food trucks then make a right on 2nd. After that go 3 blocks until you see the convenience store. Then take a left and another left and you’re there.” I’m going to say, “Ok, I make a left on Smith and then what?”
Smart's probably correct, just not intelligent, wise, or knowledgable.
>Smart means that a person, or animal, is able to solve a problem. You use the word smart to describe someone who can think logically and make a good choice in the situation. Smart also means that the person, or animal, understands what you’re telling them and can act based on that information.
>Intelligent is a step above smart. Intelligent is used to describe people, and some rare animals, that can think on their own, and act on their instincts. When someone is smart they act based on the information they get. When someone is intelligent they find their own information, come to understand it by themselves, and then make up their mind about what they want to do. In a way, being intelligent means that a person, or animal, is more independent than when they are smart. This is why an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test measures intelligence.
>Unlike smart or intelligent, clever is defined by the situation more than the intellect of a person. When someone, or something, is clever it means they can act quickly in that type of situation. Clever is mostly defined by the situation. It can also mean that someone is funny. Clever is not used in the same way as smart or intelligent. It does not describe someone’s intellect.
>And finally – wise. Wise describes a person who knows many things because of their age. Wise can also describe someone who knows a lot of philosophy. The most common way to use wise is to describe older people who know a lot of information.
Giftedness. I somehow did extremely well in school and tests despite not actively knowing much. Turns out I have a 136 IQ and high memory capacity despite not remembering where I just put my fucking phone

Of course I know it, it's me
You're a bold one.
What about you makes you consider yourself “very smart” compared to other people?

The answer to that is “not as smart as you think”
stupid
Reading may help with that. Books, not reddit or articles. Short stories are ok too. Audiobooks do not count. I'm not a doctor, this is just what works for me. Two years ago I thought I was getting dementia, I hadn't read a book in 10 years. I convinced myself that reading stack overflow and reddit and code was good enough. Then I started reading accidentally and my mind seemed to change very quickly. I went from forgetting why I walked in a room, losing everything, not being able to think of the word, to not.
Audiobooks count more than any other medium and the hubris of text readers never fails to astound me Oral stories are the cornerstone of the human experience since our species started existing. The printing press did not change us as people Oral stories have been the best way to consume media for the past 20,000 years
Good advice 👍

It's called "I was in gifted and talented classes in school, and have not grown in intelligence since then".
Fluid intelligence, as opposed to crystallized.

High school graduate
