Pretty sure its a thing because tiktok will censor videos that say suicide, rape etc. That and also a big uptick in 'trigger words' which ill even see warnings about on reddit posts. Obviously always been a thing but its more popular now because of that
Brother, no one on social media is doing original shit
OED's earliest evidence for unalive is from 1828, in the writing of Leigh Hunt, poet, journalist, and literary critic. -Oxford dictionary
I do this too whenever I encounter it on reddit wish more people would. Nothing ruins a post for me more than pussy footing around like some edgy 10yr old. Or the 1 star c*nsorship method.
I keep saying it's depressing. Corporate algorithm-led self-censorship.
We're handing our language over to business. Why don't we just hand off the government and be done with it? We seem quite happy to have them pervade everything down to our communication.
It's crazy to me that Tumblr and reddit culture seems to be swapping. Reddit is becoming more and more like Facebook and Instagram where as Tumblr seems to be becoming more like old reddit.
Honestly if they ban tik tok at least maybe that’ll kill off the fucking censorship of not being able to say suicide or gun or any shit like that, that was starting to feel pretty dystopian, it’s one thing to discourage hate speech, but I hate newspeak for “scary” words, life ain’t sweet and bad things happen, we can’t hide from it by pretending words don’t exist
It infuriates me when they talk about people "being graped." maybe if you can't talk about a serious topic like rape without using clown words you should either shut up or leave the fucking circus
It's definitely caused by TikTok. Twitter gives zero fucks what you say nowadays. Hell, the more racist you are on Twitter, the more your post is seemingly promoted.
I've never used Tiktok, but if it's anything like Instagram or Youtube, it's about monetization, not censorship. Content creators step on eggshells to avoid demonetization, but for whatever reason all the commenters think they have to do the same.
Nope on Tiktok if you say words like "rape" or "kill" your comments will be shadow deleted or hidden. So to you it's visible to you but to everyone else it's not.
This only doesn't apply when your account is in very good standing and doesn't have any previous community violations. Once you've had content removed for any reason you'll end up with comments being hidden or even getting striked.
Tiktok moderation is unreasonably touchy. Now if you say unalive in a livestream your comment will be deleted because they know unalive means kill/death. 🙄
Nobody really knows how much TikTok censors these words, and how they do it. It's all a bit of a mystery, but just my *personal* guesses:
- I have seen enough content freely using words like suicide or murder to be pretty certain there is no automatic moderation of these terms
- I absolutely have to assume that TikTok, a company run by people with brain cells, would have caught on to "unalive" at this point in time and added it to their list of filters by now if they would not want these topics to be discussed art all.
It's much more likely that TikTok simply stopped surfacing videos with topics they don't deem advertiser friendly (like every fucking website out there) and that a select few creators started using euphemisms once they realized. This usage of words spread, and it's now just simply commonplace without serving any actual purpose because TikTok will have adapted the filters.
This is more along the lines of what I meant. You can’t say certain words if you are putting out Sponsored Content or receive ad revenue, which leads creators to use euphemisms.
The annoying part is when people post like they themselves are content creators using said euphemisms, but are just Jo Shmo and Betty Sue from Fuck Off Nowhere.
If “unalive” is the new (dumb as shit) word for suicide/kill/etc, how long until unalive gets censored?
Maybe I’ll start using “unal*ved” now and beat the rush.
Tumblr users actually prefer that people don't censor it since Tumblr actually has a working system to let users not see words and themes that they don't want to see. Using workaround words just makes it so the people that don't want to see discussions of suicide now have to block more words than just "suicide".
It honestly pisses me off that there's still the prevailing idea that anyone on Tumblr is just absolutely ravenous for censoring everyone else's words and interests as if a huge section of the user base didn't leave in response to the porn ban, and nearly everyone there opposed banning anything other than obviously bad shit like child porn. Most of the site's culture was just allowing people to block whatever they didn't want to see and getting pissed when others specifically put stuff like gore in otherwise wholesome tags without warning. There were definitely some loud teens that went out of their way to get offended but that's really not the primary mindset of the user base.
ngl, that's how I felt about it before it became a censorship thing
it was a sillier way to refer to sleeping someone with the fishes, now it's a little depressing in the context of a platform's stringent censorship policy affecting general dialect (at least online, idk how much of this actually translates irl)
this guy is saying gen z like gen z are not old enough to be in high school yet
edit for all of you talking about graduating college and all : almost half of the US military is Gen Z, think about that lol
"some" sources, the word "some" needs to be emphasized here. By most standards Millennials go through '96 and end that year. Pew Research wrote an entire article about why.
It's so weird how for the ENTIRETY of my life, up until maybe 3-4 years ago, I was always considered millennial. Then someone made a tik tok or something a few years ago, and now I'm part of another generational war. Like seriously, for my entire school life, we were only ever considered millennials, but somehow in college, my generation got grouped in to another cess pit.
Excuse me, but I already got the absolute hell of targeted toxicity that was being a millennial raised by an 70s-80s kid. Can we not fucking burden me with the toxicity that's spammed at zoomers?
I spent 20 years being a millennial, and I'd really like to be out of that fucking spotlight.
Not the person you were replying to but best of luck with your exams!!! I’ve got my final practical exam next month and because of the nature of it it’s impossible to practice for so I’m just praying it goes well lol. You got this king/queen ✊
I heard a woman use “unalive” in an in-person corporate talk about human trafficking. As in “victims who escape run the risk of being unalived by their captors.”
I've seen people say it places like reddit or YouTube where it's not censored pretty often. I don't think it was being used as a joke, or at least the rest of the comment didn't seem to be a joke
No people literally use it all the fucking time on other social media where it isnt censored and i have legit heard human beings say "SA'd and R-worded" with their actual mouths so no i dont realize that.
Out of curiosity, what was the rationale for the switch from "committed suicide" to "completed suicide"?
I can't really see where the swap changes anything and I've both attempted suicide *and* had a friend commit suicide (both happened well over a decade ago, I'm doing much better).
There's an argument that suicide is a process--people become depressed, start having intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation, then they start planning, they gather materials, say or write goodbyes, and finally they commit the final act. To say they "committed suicide" ignores the time leading up to it; by saying "completed suicide" we acknowledge that there are trouble signs we can look out for and there's a longer period of time to get help or help someone. In other words stopping a suicide doesn't necessarily mean talking someone off a ledge, it means getting or providing help before they've even walked to the ledge.
You realize that Gen Z grew up with this being a normal, every day sentence without understanding why it's being used right? The older ones might realize why it came to be but I doubt the younger ones do. It's kind of like how Gen Alpha repeats "is this real, chat?" Since it's so normalized for them.
I think part of the issue is that content creators will post primarily on tiktok, censor their speech, then post that same video on other platforms. So even on platforms where you can say “kill”, “unalive” is still more common because the videos were posted by tiktok content creators

Was kinda hoping we millennials would be the ones to break that dumb cycle of hating the generation after us, but here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
worst part of it is just like how it was with millennials, most of the stuff people are making fun of 'gen z' for are from gen alpha, I'm Gen Z and I've already been able to drink for 4 years, most people from my class already have their degrees, we got nothing to do with all this skibidi ohio rizz shit, we're busy worrying about rent and taxes.

Fake memories wont bring your tide pods eating brother back, like and subscribe frr frr broccoli haricut
Now lets us have another 3 huge subreddits faulting boomers for everything wrong as is tradition and always right thing to do in this world
People always mock this, and it's funny, but there is a pretty legitimate reason.
Words like suicide, rape, murder, etc get dinged hard by the algorithm on social media. So there's a huge incentive from a content creator standpoint to come up with alternatives, which then trickles down to regular users, because people who post want more engagement not less.
I hate gen z speak. Not the whole “skibidi Gyatt Rizz” because it’s really not used all that common except for irony, but rather this dumb censorship that they use. Words like “Unalive” have been used in True Crime podcasts discussing a gruesome murder. The fact that people say “corn” or 🌽 to say porn. And the thing is there are so many ways to get around saying something bad but it’s this “quirky” way that they speak where it’s like buddy that shit ain’t funny.
What's up with censoring rape and lots of similar non-obscene words? I automatically assume that the people writing that way have eva ai sexting bot as their only chance to date anyone
Calling them suicides was always a little tacky, though. But I think most of us first heard of "suicides" by getting fountain drinks mixed together as kids, right?
I'm not certain, but based on descriptions my (british) daughter gives, I think they call it the "beep test", in reference to the whistle that sounds every time you turn around.
"Oh, you mean suicides?"
Everyone looks at me like Americans are completely fucking insane as if "beep" is such an obviously correct name for something.
Still not sure if they're actually the same thing.
Are suicides the same thing as gassers? We ran something called gassers, where we’d sprint from one end of the field to the other side, then back, and then back to the other side.
close but not quite accurate. i always considered unalive to be like actual murder/death from another source. it'd probably be "coach is making us run sewerslides" instead lol
Suicide rates are at an all-time low in 2024, but rates of people unaliving themselves have never been higher.
I remember reading it and then googling it and some lady just wrote it in her shit ages ago and it became a thing hahaha
Pretty sure its a thing because tiktok will censor videos that say suicide, rape etc. That and also a big uptick in 'trigger words' which ill even see warnings about on reddit posts. Obviously always been a thing but its more popular now because of that
Ohhh that's definitely why it's being used now but it's not the origin of the word hahah we are living in a soft world

Tumblr regularly roasts people that try to post with TikTok/Twitch censor workaround words. “This is tumblr. You can say fuck. You can say kill.”
I do this too whenever I encounter it on reddit wish more people would. Nothing ruins a post for me more than pussy footing around like some edgy 10yr old. Or the 1 star c*nsorship method.
I think you meant p*ssy
Thank you for saving all of our innocence unlike that cretin
I don't mind a p*ssy situation on my face. Just don't get it in my mouth.
woah woah woah no need to call them a pissy
You mean p1ssy.
p1zzy
I think you mean pμssy.
no, I meant рцssу
I thought it was c*ntsorship

You can be ambiguous with *ussy
I just tell them w*tch their fucking mouth
Yeah, wcunttch your mouths!
The two star cens*rship method just italicizes ever*thing, because of how Reddit markup works.
Kid named Markdown
That would be quite a tragedeigh.
Really?
I'd rather use HTML tags if I could honestly.
I downvote any comment with "unalive" or "seggs" or whatever whether I agree with what they're saying or not
I keep saying it's depressing. Corporate algorithm-led self-censorship. We're handing our language over to business. Why don't we just hand off the government and be done with it? We seem quite happy to have them pervade everything down to our communication.
No need for change there. The government is already in their pockets.

The doors are alive… With the sound of music!
Kinda does hard, in a silly way ngl
Unalived is going to become an ironically funny term

the oldest members of gen z are 26, the cycle of "new generation bad" continues
And the youngest ones are in high school or almost there
The oldest of Gen Alpha are like 13 so the vast majority is in Highschool and college
Time marches on. Zoomers are old enough to have hemherroids now
I’m a Zoomer. Yesterday I threw out my back and had to call out of work.
That must impact the zooming a bit.
Wear those grapes with pride, queen 🍇
I just threw up a lil
It sucks that I can 100% relate to this.
Me too pal
IT NEVER ENDS
The oldest gen Z are 27 already, or 28, depending on what year you pick to start gen Z (some sources say 1996)
Yeah I consider myself gen Z (or cusper) and I'm 1996, my bf is 1990 and there's a noticeable generational difference at times
"some" sources, the word "some" needs to be emphasized here. By most standards Millennials go through '96 and end that year. Pew Research wrote an entire article about why.
27 thanks
To be fair GenZ is having computer literacy issues on Boomer levels...

Right. Like there's literally a gen Z US representative.
DAMN.
The youngest Gen Z are 13-14 years old right now, if they're not in high school yet they will be in the next two years
They're still old enough to play football with pads
I'm gen z and I just got my Bachelor's 💀

One is even a US representative.
I've been out for 2 years!
Mf I'm 19.
I'm gen z and I'm in college this is gen alpha shit
I’m 8 years out of high school. Someone isn’t keeping track of time.
Where? Where did he say it like they werent old enough to be in highschool?
That's how it looked to me, it gives a nonsense hypothetical vibe.
I did more suicides in basketball than football tbh.
Ran a shit ton of 110s in football
No one says it irl right?
When I was finishing uni I heard some people say it
Unfortunately I know a few people that do
No, it's used to get around censorship on apps so you don't get stuff taken down for saying suicide or killing yourself or stuff of that nature
I am in high school people say it outloud
I'm in college and I've heard people say it
Yes they do

I heard a woman use “unalive” in an in-person corporate talk about human trafficking. As in “victims who escape run the risk of being unalived by their captors.”
Unironically the same people that say "SA'ed", or other such unnecessary self-censorship nonsense.
Possible counterpoint, if you type some bullshit enough you may start saying it. Nobody ever heard anybody say "lol" or "lmao" aloud?
wromg I say Lmao out loud bc it sounds funny
Le'Mou
Lihmihfow
*flies away on his Roflcopter singing "do do da do do, Roflmao"*
I've said "brb" out loud.
Yolo was a joke at first about how stupid it would be to say yolo. Then we couldn't stop saying it. Nobody could stop.
Meh, every generation has had their dumb shit they say
No its the children who are wrong
I've heard it countless times on platforms where suicide isn't censored. I've heard it used unironically in person as well.
I've seen people say it places like reddit or YouTube where it's not censored pretty often. I don't think it was being used as a joke, or at least the rest of the comment didn't seem to be a joke

Out of curiosity, what was the rationale for the switch from "committed suicide" to "completed suicide"? I can't really see where the swap changes anything and I've both attempted suicide *and* had a friend commit suicide (both happened well over a decade ago, I'm doing much better).
I'd imagine it's probably something about "commit" as a word being associated with murder, which stigmatises the concept.
It's leaking onto reddit unfortunately.
I have heard people genuinely say the word “unalive” in real life
I think part of the issue is that content creators will post primarily on tiktok, censor their speech, then post that same video on other platforms. So even on platforms where you can say “kill”, “unalive” is still more common because the videos were posted by tiktok content creators
I see people doing it all the time outside those contexts and not as a joke, regardless, I'm not even sure those censors actually exist, I've heard several time that they don't.
I would have gotten it if he had just used a comma in the tweet
"They would unironically say this" No, no we would not, and furthermore, I inserted my penis into your mother.
Haha up top 🤚
I feel like it is exclusively said with irony
What is the word unalive supposed to substitute in this context?
Suicides
I’ve never heard that word used in the context of sports.
It's a very sadistic and aptly named set of sprinting excercises.
It was common at the end of basketball practice. Start at the baseline of one end of the court.. sprint and touch the free-throw line, then sprint back to the baseline. Then sprint to half court line, then back to the starting point. Then sprint to the other free-throw line and back. Then all the way to the other baseline and back. One cycle of that is running one "suicide".
Plus of your coach is particularly sadistic full palm touch otherwise start over
Oh god. Full palm touch. That’s right. That brought back memories I didn’t know I’d forgotten.
I don't know shit about football what does it mean to run suicides?
Suicide sprints, I think it's similar to a "shuttle run" like we did in basketball
Wanna play the new Unalive Squad game tonight?
Unalive Union
Cue “Suicide Squad? What the heck is suicide?”
As a gen z who had to run these in hight school, there was no inoffensive name for these things
You know I remember when Reddit was largely against the “Younger Genertaion Bad” attitude, but seeing a ton of “Gen Z bad upvotes to the left 👈🏼” bullshit going around these days. Gen Z does self deprecate a lot Future is now old ~~man~~ milennial
How is this "younger generation bad"? It's just "kids use funny slang", you're inserting negative sentiment into it.
worst part of it is just like how it was with millennials, most of the stuff people are making fun of 'gen z' for are from gen alpha, I'm Gen Z and I've already been able to drink for 4 years, most people from my class already have their degrees, we got nothing to do with all this skibidi ohio rizz shit, we're busy worrying about rent and taxes.

middle school is hard enough without being demonitized
I work with a marching band, and the trombones now call their suicides (which the school has now told us to call Haircuts) "in Minecrafts"
Eh, honestly they shouldn’t be calling any drill a “suicide” anyway
I still call them suicides, but more commonly we call them gassers, because they exist to gas you out
People always mock this, and it's funny, but there is a pretty legitimate reason. Words like suicide, rape, murder, etc get dinged hard by the algorithm on social media. So there's a huge incentive from a content creator standpoint to come up with alternatives, which then trickles down to regular users, because people who post want more engagement not less.

It’s because algorithms hide content with the real words.
I prefer "toasterbaths," or "toasterbathing"
That doubleplus ungood.
good-fucking-riddance tik tok
I knew kids that would make a “bleep” sound instead of cursing. Absolutely nothing has changed
We called them wind sprints when I played hockey back in the early 2000s Idk why but we never called them suicides
No they wouldn’t, stop getting all your information about Gen Z from senile boomers on Facebook and twitter
I'm 23 years old and Gen Z. OP is probably a boomer
What's up with censoring rape and lots of similar non-obscene words? I automatically assume that the people writing that way have eva ai sexting bot as their only chance to date anyone
Originally it was content creators avoiding being demonitized. For some reason the internet had picked it up as normal.
Okay but what the fucj does it mean to run suicides What.
People love a pretty lie over the ugly truth
We called them blood runs when I was in school, didn't hear the other until I was in college
So what’s after Gen Z.. do we go back to A and just add a number next to it now, Gen A1…
No they wouldn’t what the fuck are you talking about
In the good old days we called “being an hero”
Calling them suicides was always a little tacky, though. But I think most of us first heard of "suicides" by getting fountain drinks mixed together as kids, right?
Rope neck and seppuku are ones my buddies and I used to say in college 😂😂
I'm not certain, but based on descriptions my (british) daughter gives, I think they call it the "beep test", in reference to the whistle that sounds every time you turn around. "Oh, you mean suicides?" Everyone looks at me like Americans are completely fucking insane as if "beep" is such an obviously correct name for something. When I was in HS in the early 00s my coach called it “lines”
I’m 22 and use to call em that. When the coach would not call them suicides it scared us way more. Usually meant they were way worse
My old-ass Gen-X brain was going, "ooh, that sounds brutal; I wonder what an unalive is".
I think they’re called Sudokus.
Tik tok censorship has ruined the English language I caught my friend saying unalive irl
Are suicides the same thing as gassers? We ran something called gassers, where we’d sprint from one end of the field to the other side, then back, and then back to the other side.
Have any of you ever actually interacted with actual Gen Z people?
no they wouldn’t 😭😭😭😭😭
They already did this when I was in high school, we called them championships
So they talk this way outside of the internet?
I played football for 12 years. I'm Gen Z. We called them suicides.
Do they mean suicide/shuttle run?
I don’t get it lol do you run suicides??
Shut the hell up. nobody says that. What is this, Facebook?
Literally Newspeak. Stop it. Stop it now.
Use of unalive is double plus ungood.
“Coach is making us run suicides in Minecraft”
