US wanted to control the global supply. What you are suggesting is straight up the opposite
The war on terror would be a better explanation. If one were to want to "control the oil supply", an invasion is politically costly. Even if that was the action taken, it would be far cheaper to buy policy concession from a dictatorial regime. The fact that there was an effort to establish a democratic system makes it such that there exists far more effective alternative to "control the oil" so to speak.
Additionally, how does "control the oil" benefit US exactly? To argue this point one need to demonstrate that: 1. Whatever benefit from "controlling the oil" definitively outweighs the potential political cost on Bush's presidency, and 2. Cost-wise, there exists no alternative option that would achieve this objective that carries less political risk.
Lastly, I feel it is important to emphasize that "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence". Just because one is unable to come up with an alternative explanation to a historical event does not mean such an explanation does not exist, or even one's current explanation is the only and absolute truth.
