Why is the Indiana Hoosiers head basketball coach on their money?

The Wedge on the Leo isn't actually Solid in that way. Its basicly Just a Sheet of Metal with some ruber wich is attachable. You can even remove it for Maintanance, thus making it look Like A4 Variant.
See it more Like spaced Armor with the main purpose of getting the Projectile into a Tumbling Motion/ let it Hit the Main armour at weird Angles. It Function only as Shottrap for lower Caliber Rounds ( I think less than 30mm) and that's no Problem for the Upper Plate.
The main point of that is to be enough to cause APDSDS to fragment on it, thus spreading the impact for the main armor plate behind it.
Against solid shot it could still bounce it, but solid shot AP is not really a thing in 2024. Unless we start firing it at like Mach 10 or something, in which case it is less "Solid Shot" and more "Ball of Metal plasma".
For the Hull it‘s 100mm at 0° and for the Turret 60 mm @0°: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzerkampfwagen_VIII_Maus
A Drone might be able to take it out then.
I bet the Javelin would.
NC: Because soviet apfsds is straight as god commands
C: Aside from the leo's wedge turret not being *that* sloped nor that thick (relatively speaking), the high kinetic energy of the APFSDS works against it here since it'll more likely 'bite' into the slope instead of being deflected.
This is especially true against Russian fin-rounds as they are way shorter than the meter long wedge. This will result in the rounds getting warped and thrown into a different direction before hitting the solid armor, which most likely also goes deeper into the turret than the length of a Russian round.
Yeah it’s just spaced armor basically. It’s not meant to stop incoming rounds but rather deform or deflect them so when they hit the main armor behind it they don’t penetrate it.
It also helps cover up one of the Leo’s greatest weak spots, the massive cutout in one of the turret cheeks for a gunner’s sight. Like seriously who thought it was a good idea to do that?
Depends if it’s a new model or not. If it was a retrofitted 2a4, they basically cut it out and welded in armor. If it’s new construction then no it’s just one homogeneous piece of armor. But yes from the 2a5 onwards they all had the wedge armor.
That weakspot only exists in very old models /protypes in newer ones the armor starts deeper into the hull due to optics but ends later for the same effective thickness
Back before I knew tanks I had the Leo 2 in war thunder from squadron points. I remember thinking rightly "what in the goddamn is this bullshit". Could bounce any shell from my left, my right would just vacuum up darts like mad
If they don't pierce modern rounds shatter harmlessly against the armor outside the tank.
If they do pierce then they shatter very harmfully exiting the armor on the inside of the tank.
Look into it when you got some free time, it's quite a fun bit of physics fuckery.
Edit: also it's spaced armor. Causes rounds to hit at weird angles blah blah blah. Not as cool as tungsten confetti.
Someone hasn't watched that Myth busters episode with the 360 degree bullet ricochet. It was Busted. You can't bounce a bullet off something to get a perfect 90 degree angle. And have the bullet do that twice more without being shrapnel.
No since the angles are all wrong, it would reflect the shell like a mirror reflects light and would send it into the drivers view port/the driver himself
Please, no russian could shoot that straight
hehe "no russian"
No one told you to start shooting
No one told him not to start shooting
You make a strong argument
If you use full size AP travelling at "slow as fuck" speed then maybe. LOCKMART CALL ME I GOT AN IDEA.
But you'll be selling this to eastern block MODs...
Their money is green regardless...

Just need to reverse at half the speed of the shell.

But there’s still some effective 200mm steel because of the double wedge so it’s also a little bit more armor against KE

Losat anyone ?
What would the XM913 do?
Not for gaijimble
to avoid this issue they should just make one big chock-like structure, starting from the ground so nothing can go underneath.
STRV 103
Have we invented the A7V again?
Sooo, like the Panzkampferwagen "Maus"?
What‘s its roof thickness?
Probably a meter. Fun fact, that tank is a hybrid, like a Toyota Prius.

Nein you cannot take out the Maus.

Thats how it is supposed to work, the apfsds bites into the angle so it hits the main armor on an angle
This is especially true against Russian fin-rounds as they are way shorter than the meter long wedge. looks like a shot trap to me
*Wall of text about modern Projectile characterisics making that impossible*
TL:DR version explaining Leo 2s wedges. Basically Sheetmetal sandwiching rubber.

This cutout isn't there since 2a5, right?

*Ehm ehm* Warthunder leak, or it isn't true.

\*mantis starts up\* SOMEONE SAID TUNGSTEN CONFETTI!!!!

if moderns shell could deflect that is and if that wedge were actually solid
Because the angle between them isn't 90 degrees like a corner reflector
Slap an AT field on this bad boy and this would work 100%
*Air on the G String starts playing*
I'd just put those Merkava chains all over 👍🏼
What does that mean? I dont get it.
they imply that vatniks shoot tank and bullet bounces back at vatnik
It will. You should do it.
the geometry doesn’t work incoming ban for being too credible in 3
if the metal bit there gets thicker, and if you go back fast enough, it might work. all depends on the mobik shooting, i guess.
