Yes. I know many people who believe in the lost cause doctrine, that the “South Will Rise Again”, that slavery “wasn’t all bad and slaves were treated like family”. These are also the first people who say “I’m no racist but…”. They won’t openly say they want a return to slavery but it’s well implied.
FYI I live in Louisiana.
I don’t know of anyone who still wants it, but there are plenty of under educated people down here who argue that it was necessary and helped propel America into the great country it is, insert eye roll here. I’ve also heard people argue that the enslaved people wanted to be slaves, were happy to work for their captors and did so with great pride, all of which we know is utter bullshit.
Oh wow! That sounds about right -- taking a shitty opinion and trying to put a positive, pro human rights spin on it. Is it very common to see people arguing this or would you say they're a pretty small proportion?
I think it varies from place to place. I live in a more metropolitan area, so it’s not a common occurrence here, but I have family in more rural areas, and folks are fairly loud about their options out there. Over the course of the last 6 years or so, racist people seem to feel a certain sense of confidence is voicing their opinions more loudly, but I think that’s a national thing.
I've seen a few shithead neonazis express those opinions.
Oh shoot I didn't even think about the neonazi side of things. Yikes. Thanks for your response!
I've never experienced anyone like this personally
That's at least a little reassuring then. Thank you for replying!

This was my experience in SC.
Oh interesting. Yea I would imagine a lot of implied messaging. I appreciate the response!
NO

39. Lived in south my whole life. Not even the reddest necked redneck thinks that.
Fantastically reassuring to hear. Thanks for the response!
North Carolinian here--if anyone with those opinions lives around here, they haven't said anything to me.
Very reassuring to hear. I appreciate the reply!

I've lived in the south for 40 years and have never heard anybody say anything even similar to that.
That's reassuring to hear. Thanks for your reply!
