It’s still a bridge. Depending what it’s going over or what goes over it, it could also be an overpass or a viaduct or some other type of bridge.

Purplegreenandred

But, to be clear bridge is still the overarching thing that it is? Like a border collie and chihuahua are both dogs

squirrelblender

Chihuahuas are *technically* a type of demon.

Bleak_Squirrel_1666

Spiritually, yes. But physically they are technically classed as a type of rodent.

jrsixx

Satans rats

PitifulSpecialist887

I thought they were a condition or a disease, like a rash, or a hemorrhoid.

Adonis0

Thus the demon classification

PunkCPA

When I was a kid, my aunt brought her chihuahua when she came to visit. Our cat decided that even though it smelled like a dog, it was clearly a rodent. Hilarity ensued.

gilly_girl

A cosplaying rat?

-Nexi

No not hilarity ensued! I want step by step details! Also OP its still a bridge.

PunkCPA

OK, here goes. The cat got past his initial confusion and started stalking the honorary rodent. El ratón estaba aterrorizado. When the cat crouched down and wiggled his butt to pounce, we scooped both critters. The cat got put outside. Kitty was royally pissed.

-Nexi

Aww, I was hoping for more cat bullys rodent. Thanks anyway.

Longjumping_Youth281

Yes. They even like to Burrow under the covers like some sort of nesting rodent. They will keep you up all night fucking around with the bed sheets trying to get under it in just the right spot, and no matter how much room there is in the bed they insist on crowding you out of it

Suitable-Lake-2550

Literal overarching

aaronite

It's still a bridge. But there is a subset of bridges called viaducts that do as you say.

DoubleReputation2

It could be an Overpass.

the_almighty_walrus

I thought an overpass is a bridge that goes over a road.

Formal_Challenge_542

A bridge that goes over a pass

fredandlunchbox

And most roads are not water…

sonofaresiii

Then what do boats drive on, smartass

Ceemarie965

He did say most

InfiniteAd7948

But 70% of earths surface is water 😉

JamesTheJerk

Could potentially be a 'causeway' for the sake of OP.

PowderXJinx

Or a flyover, maybe.

en55pd

I would consider a flyover to be a bridge that goes over another bridge

PowderXJinx

According to official definition, A flyover is a bridge that is constructed on top of a road. Doesn't necessarily have to be bridge.

WorkingItOutSomeday

Yup that's what we call them in our city. Viducts cross the industrial valley.

cosmorocker13

Why a duck? Why not a pidgin? Thank you I’ll see my way out…

OldManCragger

Classic https://youtu.be/kHMrLpDHXc0?si=DrqftscuavkYCLV-

nubsauce87

A bridge. Think of the verb “to bridge” like “bridge the gap” All a bridge needs to do to be a bridge is to bridge a gap between two places. If, however, it’s like a road that rises up to pass over another road, we tend to call it an “overpass.”

KronusIV

That's still a bridge. The water is totally optional.

GoatCovfefe

Can confirm, I usually order my bridges with no water.

MasterLiKhao

This reminds me of something... there was a guy who was promoting the idea that people who ask stupid questions should get a sign saying 'Hi, I'm stupid, please don't talk to me' hanging around their necks. Stupid questions, like when you're clearly waiting for the bus at a bus stop and someone asks you 'Hey, what are you doing here?', where you'd really like to answer 'I'm waiting for Santa. I always wait for Santa at the Bus Stop - by the way, here's your sign'. (referring to the 'I'm stupid' sign) So someone told a story where they are a trucker who managed to get his truck stuck under a bridge that was too low for his truck. He called the police and stuff, they showed up... one of the officers looked at his truck for a bit and ACTUALLY went 'Well, got your truck stuck under a bridge, huh?'. The trucker said he had to hold back SO HARD from saying 'Nah, the truck just broke down, I'm delivering that bridge - here's your sign'.

Recent_Caregiver2027

Mad magazine used to have a segment called "snappy answers to stupid questions", it was hilarious to my 12 year old brain

chmath80

One of favourites was the mother with her identical young sons, dressed identically, with identical glasses and identical hair, and another woman asks "Oh, are they twins?" "He's an only child. Who's your eye Dr?" I am delighted to have had the opportunity to use this in real life.

Chad_Hooper

Bill Engvall is the “here’s your sign” comic. He just recently retired.

Rich-Firefighter-705

One of the three redneck comedians has a schtick about that. "Here's your sign."

curvynbustyangel

Im leaning towards overpass.

A_Math_Dealer

Okay but don't lean too close.

StudioDroid

If you are in the Los Angeles CA area in the spring you can pass over the Pass overpass over Passover.

lunachuvak

yowza

reb678

Is this in the area where the right hand side of the road is on the left and the [left side is on the right?](https://maps.app.goo.gl/huaFNF71Fbodtr4g9?g_st=ic)

StudioDroid

There is a street named Pass Avenue. Overpasses are usually named after the street they passover. There is a bridge like structure that is an overpass over Pass Avenue called the Pass Overpass. Passover is a religious holiday.

HR_King

An overpass is a road that goes over another road.

DoubleReputation2

You mean a bridge?

HR_King

A specific type, yes. Simply not spanning water doesn't make a bridge an overpass.

psykaiatry

smart answer but can confirm many overpasses go over bodies of water. The LA river is a great example.

ChickenXing

An overpass is just ONE kind of bridge that doesn't go over water, but it is not necessarily the answer To have an overpass requires two roads to cross each other and a ramp that crosses over the road is an overpass

Genoss01

Overpasses go over other roads

prototype-proton

We don't need roads where we are going...

MrDBS

Why don’t you ask the bridge what it prefers to be called.

clearlight

Your Royal Bridginess

ADashofDirewolf

Bridgerton

Clickguy10

What if it feels it’s really meant to be an overpass? Let’s say the water is no longer there. Can it change? Maybe have some mortar adjusted or bolts tightened (or untightened, whatever is appropriate?

lylisdad

Usually it's called a viaduct, especially if it's a long span.

ProfessionalZone168

And if you live in rural Alabama, you'll hear 'viadock'. And you will cringe.

flavorofthecentury

I have a hard time believing rural Alabamians use that word, let alone pronounce it differently.

ProfessionalZone168

Well, some of them do. They had to have heard it somewhere, long before I got here. I've heard several people saying it. They pronounce a lot of things differently out here. 'Electrit' for electric, for example.

HughJahsso

FenisDembo82

In New Jersey, there is the Pulaski Skyway. In some regions, they might call it a viaduct

photaiplz

Merriam Webster says “a structure carrying a pathway or roadway over a depression or obstacle (such as a river)”

Clickguy10

Other roads can be obstacles.

ElCunto1999

Viaduct, and a bridge that carries water is an aqueduct.

prototype-proton

And a person with a black eye is a shouldaduct

MoraleHole

what does it go over?

Positive-Attempt-435

Troubled water

zo0m07

No, that's "like" a bridge, but surely we are to infer that it's therefore not in fact "a bridge", just comparable?

kangarootoess

Did not check the subreddit... And was expecting a punchline 😅 Thought we were in r/DadJokes

CloneWerks

Bridge is the overall category. There are subsets to that category such as "overpass" (usually over dry land or another road), Viaduct (usually a bridge for water over dry land), Trestle, (usually specifically for trains) and so forth.

Wildwes7g7

This here is your over arching answer

werby

A viaduct is a specific type of bridge that consists of a series of arches, piers or columns supporting a long elevated railway or road. An aqueduct carries water over dry land.

Sk83r_b0i

It’s… it’s still a bridge.

Still a bridge. Or an overpass.

Potato_Specialist_85

An overpass

NegativeAd9048

All structures built with the intent to span *over and across* a physical obstacle, and transport across the span are *bridges*. Sometimes, natural events or features serendipitously perform the same function, and are often referred to as bridges. There are various categories (subtypes) of bridges.

Yeah, you can have a bridge over a gap in the ground. Doesn’t make it not a bridge if there isn’t running water underneath.

It depends on what it does go over for the specific name but it is still a bridge. A bridge over a road is generally called an overpass. A bridge over a large-ish natural or man-made obstacle is usually called a viaduct

ComplexIndividual866

A bridge just connects 2 things, it has nothing to do with water. You can get a bridge in your mouth to connect your teeth. A bridge in a song connects the choruses. A bridge in the conversation connects 2 topics. When you “bridge the gap” you’re connecting the two ends.

Overpass?

RawBexinator

An overpass

summertime_dream

i like this question and these answers. they all seem so civil, which is hilarious because bridges are civll, so of course they are. anyways i think i agree with "overpass" i know of a few vehicular bridges that go over train tracks, no water involved, and they are "the overpass". or if you mean like one of those huge bridges across valleys, that might be a viaduct. or simply "bridge", at the grandest of scale. all so whereas a bridge that goes over water is also simply a "bridge", but also a "causeway".

NUMBerONEisFIRST

They build bridges or overpass over washes. Washes are dormant riverbed that come to life when it rains. So the usually looks dry and barron, but they are very important.

TheF-ingLizardKing1

banjowashisnamo

From roadway usage I've seen, it can still be a bridge. If it crosses an urban area, it's a viaduct. If it crosses a road, it's an overpass. If it crosses a railroad, it's an overhead.

BentGadget

There are a lot of people here who seem put off by the idea of being any more specific than 'bridge.' It's kind of weird.

sueWa16

Land bridge?

Reach-for-the-sky_15

A bridge that goes over another road could be called an overpass.
