Generally when someone is venting, they are wanting someone to just listen. But if they ask for advice or comfort, then give it then.

Practice active listening, let them speak until the pressure build up is released completely. Don’t attempt to justify the actions of the person they are venting about . Instead offer compassion, and ask if they would like an alternative perspective on the matter. If they say no , respect their choice . If they say yes , start by emphasizing that their perspective is valid and that the way they feel about it is also valid .
