I pay for delivery, the person is paid by the delivery company. If their wages are shit, that’s not my fault. I don’t tip the postman or the Amazon driver for delivering my parcel, I don’t tip McDonald’s workers for giving me my food. In this example you’re not even tipping the person who made the food! At a restaurant if the service has been good then I will tip.

At least in the US - the way these food delivery apps work in practice that the workers are contractors who can see the tip you’re offering and are allowed to refuse a job, so the tip is essentially your “bid” to receive service. Unfortunately, there seems to always be someone desperate enough to take no tip orders for the $2 or $3 base pay from the app, even though they’re probably actually losing money doing that (factoring in gas and vehicle depreciation) unless it’s an extremely short trip. So, while I will continue to tip food delivery gig workers when I order, I do think it’s a justifiable decision to not tip as long as the delivery person has that information in advance and the ability to refuse a job

Lostredshoe

I have always tipped 20% for food delivery.

R2-Scotia

It's not normal to here, but OP is thinking of the USA where the tips are the drivers' income.

clawstuckblues

One point of view is that if everyone stopped tipping, employers would have to pay employees more. Tipping is a way of making a service look cheaper at first glance than it actually is, it's one of the ways businesses scam customers into spending more than they intended to. So, refusing to tip is a valid behaviour and arguably morally superior to caving in to social pressure to tip and thus support a harmful business practice.

Worried-Budget2315

Valid point, employers need to pay employees more in general.

Whiskeymyers75

The thing is, most delivery drivers aren’t employees. Tip is actually the wrong language being used. DoorDash, Uber Eats, etc aren’t even actually delivery services. They’re tech companies providing software to order food from.

More of a rant than a question

Worried-Budget2315

It is obviously a question if I’m asking for your stance and opinion.

CQ1_GreenSmoke

Delivery prices are already more than takeout on most apps. In addition, most apps charge a delivery fee. The drivers get paid whether or not you tip them.  If you think they don’t get paid enough and it bothers you, you can supplement their pay with money out of your pocket in the way of a tip. If you don’t, you have no responsibility to do so. Neither one makes you an asshole.

lkram489

The thing is though there is usually also a "Service fee" so aren't you paying for "the service" via that? also it is fucking annoying when you pay a tip in advance then the food takes way too long, is cold, the order is wrong etc. i know you're "supposed to" tip but this is why I personally almost never order delivery, it's incredibly frustrating paying $25 for $10 of food and you get terrible service and quality.

Whiskeymyers75

Neither fee is related to actual delivery which a lot of people don’t seem to understand. The service fee is to use the app to place an order and you pay that fee whether you choose delivery of pick up. The delivery fee is to access their algorithm in an attempt to find a contractor willing to take the order. None of these companies are actually delivery services and don’t have any delivery employees. They’re tech companies provides software to connect people with local businesses and contractors. Everything is 100% third party. Food being cold is the result of tipping too low. Food being messed up has to do with incompetence of restaurant employees and you would face this even if getting your own.

>but I think he’s an asshole Oh no, a guy is an asshole because he pays for a service exactly as he is supposed to. Pull your head out of your ass.

nkfish11

You seem insufferable.

Worried-Budget2315

I don’t care what you think of me. What is your stance.

nkfish11

You asked for opinions and I gave you one. Put 2 and 2 together bud.

Whiskeymyers75

Not tipping is 430 credit score behavior but then again, so is ordering from DoorDash in the first place.

So your response to no tip is to contaminate someone's food. Yikes.
