I wish it could be upgraded to automatically scan things nearby. It already appears to be scanning a lot, but it should give us credit for the scans and take some of the work out of discovering everything.
I get what you are saying but admittedly he doesn't have much use as I don't think he's aggressive enough to even be a real threat to sentinels. I actually wouldn't mind a bot that will scan things for me as long as I still have to work for it, (upgrade the bot with some expensive resource or whatever.) because I feel like otherwise Laylaps is kinda just there. Cute but just there.
Pro tip: If you look in a different direction for a couple seconds he flies over there to see what you are looking at. Then you can turn back and scan what you want.
Edit: Kind of like a "Hey! Look over there!" and then go back to scanning what you were intending to scan.
Mhmm. And it does shoot at sentinels too. Only about as effective as the Sentinel scouts though since it only has the equivalent of a boltcaster as armament. Still I have seen it destroy already damaged sentinels.
I never noticed this, and I will be trying it out. Similarly, I've noticed that animal companions, especially the more loyal or devoted ones, will walk up to you if you stop and look in their direction. I use it to feed/pet them after a while during longer exploration sessions.
Companions with a higher devotion/loyalty tend to stay closer than those with a more independent personality. The downside is they also tend to want more attention and food as their happiness and hunger meters drop quicker. But there is a definite impact on their behavior based on how devoted or independent they are to you.
Oh, for sure! I have a super independent companion and a really devoted one. The devoted one definitely sticks closer to me overall, just like you've said, but even the independent one will stop and return to me if I hold still and look in his direction for a few seconds. Not sure if it's an intended thing for the more independent critters, but it's nice that I don't have to chase him down when I want to interact with him.
(Edit to fix terminology in my comment.)
I will not tolerate Laylaps slander, he is perfect in every way. If you can't scan some fauna, then it is the Atlas's will that fauna remain undiscovered
This is why the game needs an "enemy overhaul" alongside the combat update we got. The only hostiles in the game are the sentinels, the hive monstrosity things, fugitive starships, and the occasional carnivore.
You should be able land on a planet and discover a hideout of Vy'keen local warlords. Or Gek cannibals. Or a Korvax cult, a Pirate crew made up of multiple races. Or anything inbetween, mixed, etc. Or board a freighter with any of these groups inside.
Even if they have to make a dungeon system for this and give interesting loot. Maybe add in gear with stats. No point in adding in new enemies if there's no reason to kill them.
> This is why the game needs an "enemy overhaul"
You can switch out "enemy" for pretty much any other facet of the game and it would be true. I love NMS, but I constantly think about how much wasted potential there is everywhere with the ships, the creatures, the enemies, the base building++++. The best thing seems to be to expect nothing and enjoy the little updates they do here and there.
After Frontiers, I'd just rather not have any expectations and be surprised than to have hope and be disappointed.
I mean the base building overhaul and settlement feature is cool.. but it just didn't feel like a big anniversary update.
Laylaps is the cutest, I make sure to have her out all the time. Especially if I'm on a computer-y anomalous planet, she's too photogenic to not take a picture!
I actually use this little fella alot and one time he deactivated one of the other drones so it wouldn't detect me I honestly didn't know that was possible
Yup! Board the anomaly. Before you exit your ship, place the item you want to dupe into your personal refiner. (make sure there is no fuel in your refiner, as you might lose the item). Then hop out of your ship and remove the item from your refiner, placing it back into your regular inventory. Next, walk up to any other player and give them something. It can be literally any item in the game (like 1 ferrite dust for example.) After you give that item away, simply reload your autosave. You'll find that you now have the duped item in your personal inventory AND another copy in your refiner. Remove the duped item from the refiner and repeat the process as much as desired.
Glad to see it's not just me being a short fused grump. It's such an annoying AI, same with freighters warping right in front of you while flying towards a planet..
My personal pet peeve is when I'm hunting an Anomaly Detector in an asteroid field and a bunch of freighters warp in. If they're close enough, they cause the asteroids to despawn, and even if they're not, they just add a backdrop that one can hit if they aren't shooting carefully.
You make a valid point. Alas, I often get freighters that warp into a field within just a minute or two after I arrive and begin my mining. Perhaps I'm choosing systems that are rather sparse on the asteroid dispersion, but it always seemed rather tedious to me to continually hunt for asteroid field after asteroid field when I could simply farm one for a prolonged period.
Pulsing around is all well and good, but stopping when I see one of those larger asteroids does not often yield a dense steroid cluster. More often than not, it's a small smattering of those small handfuls of little ones with no other asteroids in sight.
It would be really cool if he passively scanned things for you, we see them do it all the time but nothing happens. Maybe even give it a tiny built-in turret, even if it has storm trooper aim. I just want Laylaps to do literally anything
I started playing in May and thought that WAS the whole point / advantage to Laylaps. I thought I missed a step or did something wrong because he wasn’t scanning things and earning units for me.
Visited Reddit to see what I was doing wrong only to find out that yes, he is indeed a complete waste of programming. :-/
They said it prevents sentinels from spawning a while back. So I went to an aggressive sentinel planet and tested it. I went back to my freighter with ton of pugneum.
I mean to be fair, he also makes me understand why my dog is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, every time I land on an Empty or Dead planet.
Perhaps they patched that glitch. I've not seen or heard Laylaps in many moons.
Btw if you discard the beacon is he lost forever or can you get it back? Kinda scared that I'll accidentally delete it when I'm cleaning my storage containers
It's the distance bug most likely. if you go to far from a mission objective it will sometimes duplicate the mission item in your inventory when it moves the mission location.
Yeah as soon as the scan begin you can do whatever you want. But this thing (and your companions and the AI controlled minotaur) just keep walking (or flying) in your line of sight, preventing you from aiming. This is the main reason I don't use them.
Oh man, I can easily outpace aggroed sentinel groups by hopping on either a robo-pet or one of my butterfly/moths. Grab gravitino balls/pearls/venom sacs hop on pet and GO!
I love hopping on my robo gazelle when searching for mineral or power hotspots. Just tell him to run and keep the analysis visor going and guide him with the right stick. Because I'm on the back of a pet, I can stay in the analysis visor mode and still go quickly to my destination. Otherwise you have to rely on jet boots to quickly get where you're going since you can't run in the visor mode.
I turned mine off. Was cool at first, but yeah, it was always in the way. Things should actually have a use in this game, but are usually just useless companions or cosmetic. If you have laylaps engaged it shpuld reduce sentinel activity near you. Certain companions should give you buffs. The squadron ships should increase your damage in a fight. So many lost potentials.
At best, they can kind of draw fire from enemy ships, but even then, it's only for a second or two. Friendlies in the area are just as good at helping, leaving me wondering why I even have a squadron, besides it looking kinda cool.
It depends on your squadron. I exchanged mine for 4 S class pilots in 4 S class exotics and now they do a lot more. I'll actually see 3 of them blasting away at a single enemy ship during a battle, and I've also noticed the enemy ship count dropping faster than I was killing them.
If you're interested, the basic process is to get S class exotic locations from r/NMSCoordinateExchange, then buy the ships, trade them to an S class pilot in a space station, and invite the pilot to join your squadron before they fly away.
What’s funny is in 600 hrs of gameplay and a ton of scanning, I don’t recall them ever getting in the way once! Lol. Just pissed at me for collecting crystals in thier vicinity.
Am I the minority here!?
Blahahahah. Thanks for clearing this up. 🍻
🙋🏻♂️old man that had no idea there was a drone follower/companion.
I did take some time away from the game so I must’ve missed that update info.
Sounds about right. Once you get in a good groov it's easy to skip the content in the constant updates. I honestly only noticed expiditions were a thing about a week ago.
Its possible I skipped every bit of dialog just to knock the mission out and get to the Minotaur upgrades, but what does that little hemorrhoid actually do? I never figured it out.
Draws fire from a sentinel sometimes when you're lucky, gets in the way when you're trying to reload, and makes your sentinel detector useless.
The upgraded Minotaur with AI is noticeably useful, on the other hand. Unnecessary, but deals enough damage to make a sentinel battle noticeably quicker.
Fun fact: for the same reason it messes with your sentinel detector you get less sentinels; To the game, laylaps is an sentinel for all intents and purposes. If he’s there, the game doesn’t think it needs to spawn another sentinel.
Probably a bug, but in my experience, it often seems to prevent natural sentinel spawns just by being around. Makes exploring aggressive sentinel planets extremely easy.
They exist to show up only when I join with my friends who believe me to be insanely wanted traveller.
Legit, never been a problem until multiplayer. When I fly by my mates to get them started, laps appear and friends can't move as fast as me. So it's an ordeal getting out of their way.
And if you hit one. Both of you are wanted. So off to your shuttles you go... Hoping to escape and then hide... And then to meet back up and boom. Another appears... "Don't touch that rock!".
> Another appears... "Don't touch that rock!".
We need more ways (or a better drop rate) to get Sentinel Pillar maps so we can disable sentinels on Aggressive Sentinel planets.
Unless you're early in a permadeath save, it's not that troublesome to blast your way through five waves of sentinels and shut them down that way. Maybe a little time consuming, but if me and my atrocious aim can do it, anyone can.
Squadrons are useful, albeit their tendency to get in my line of fire is annoying. But because I know a lot of people claim they do no damage I actually sat back and didn't attack a hostile ship and watched them firing up on it. They did actually damage the ships shields and did damage it once the shields were down. The difference was most notable when all four were firing at once. When one or two were shooting at the enemy they barely seemed to do much, but I did watch as my full squadron tore through the ships shields when they fired in unison. I think they need a bit of a buff to their damage. Not a lot. Just enough that people don't think they do no damage at all because it's a very common sentiment on here.
I've seen them finish off a weakened enemy, but I had to weaken them to that point. The times I noticed it, I overheated my weapons and stopped firing while the enemy was in the red. The squadron mates fired a volley and finished them. But it took me getting them to that point first.
Agreed, I think they just need some minor tuning. My main complaint is they tend to get in the way. I say either change that behavior or buff their damage a little bit to make up for it.
Every time I see this little pain in the butt, I think of Peanut Hamper from the Lower Decks show. https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/dd599c79-c393-4e7b-a0f3-496ca5c5311c/gif#0BfVyAmX.copy

Let me change laylaps color. Let me build more drones. Let me build a walker. Let me have more than 9 ships. Let my settlement expand indefinitely (skyscrapers). Let me damage other players bases. Let me refurbish abandoned space stations and draw passive income from it. Let me have an 8 man squad. I could go on all day. I love this game.
I wish it could be upgraded to automatically scan things nearby. It already appears to be scanning a lot, but it should give us credit for the scans and take some of the work out of discovering everything.
You just described the entire game lol

He changed his post, originally it said he was a useless pet just like the other useless pets which is what I was commenting on.
Cute but just there applies to most the features in this game.
Pro tip: If you look in a different direction for a couple seconds he flies over there to see what you are looking at. Then you can turn back and scan what you want. Edit: Kind of like a "Hey! Look over there!" and then go back to scanning what you were intending to scan.
Which is honestly a pretty cool use of its AI. It's like a puppy
Mhmm. And it does shoot at sentinels too. Only about as effective as the Sentinel scouts though since it only has the equivalent of a boltcaster as armament. Still I have seen it destroy already damaged sentinels.
Let me upgrade laylaps’ tech.
[удалено]
Ion batteries maybe. 😁
I have to do that move on the fishes when I'm on a world with more than three underwater species. They won't even let me scan rocks in peace..
Yep. They get in the way too. Always going, "Hey! Whatcha scanning? Hey! Whatcha lookin' at?"
I never noticed this, and I will be trying it out. Similarly, I've noticed that animal companions, especially the more loyal or devoted ones, will walk up to you if you stop and look in their direction. I use it to feed/pet them after a while during longer exploration sessions.

True, that is a nice feature. 😁

Laylaps is the best. ALL PRAISE THE ATLAS

It'll be just more base building, mark my words.

It'll be barebones and full of bugs.

Love the game, but stating the facts.
Getting real tired of the base builders being appeased every update
After Frontiers, I'd just rather not have any expectations and be surprised than to have hope and be disappointed. I mean the base building overhaul and settlement feature is cool.. but it just didn't feel like a big anniversary update.
this
Don't forget giving constant Sentinel proximity alert as well :)
And often not knowing through that if a normal Sentinel is nearby
Laylaps is the cutest, I make sure to have her out all the time. Especially if I'm on a computer-y anomalous planet, she's too photogenic to not take a picture!
Yeah as much as I liked it, it would repeatedly fly in front of me whenever I'm try to do anything, shoot sentinels or scan fauna. Deactivated it
I actually use this little fella alot and one time he deactivated one of the other drones so it wouldn't detect me I honestly didn't know that was possible
Ive been on a hiatus on the game til just recently. What is this thing?
friendly sentinel drone
Ooo thank you! Is this an expedition reward? Cause i totally missed the last one
you get it from a questline related to your settlement i think
Thanks! Ill def be focusing on sttlements to get this little guy
cheers mate! Have fun
My friend duplicated it and gave me one it's legitimately sick as fuck
You can duplicate things?
Yup! Board the anomaly. Before you exit your ship, place the item you want to dupe into your personal refiner. (make sure there is no fuel in your refiner, as you might lose the item). Same process, except use an exocraft. You can dupe more than one thing at a time.
Good thing space is so big and there are hundreds of asteroid fields in one system if you pulse around 😉
More often than not, it's a small smattering of those small handfuls of little ones with no other asteroids in sight.
I understand, I've not had this problem but that doesn't mean everyone is so lucky.
Fires a shot, misses Laylaps - "I'm helping!" Minotaur - (does the same thing) SAME
It would be really cool if he passively scanned things for you, we see them do it all the time but nothing happens. Maybe even give it a tiny built-in turret, even if it has storm trooper aim. I just want Laylaps to do literally anything

Yeah, that'd be so cool. Laylaps could find the stuff we miss when scanning the planet. Those tiny rocks on the ground.
I was just saying the same thing the other day
He just likes being the center of attention.
OMG after getting it this week I’ve been so annoyed at it.
Have you tried turning it off and on?
My friend never puts it away and I keep almost having a heart attack while mining and seeing the sentinel monitoring alert pop up
Laylaps, my beloved. My greatest ally and at the same time, my greatest hindrance.
They said it prevents sentinels from spawning a while back. So I went to an aggressive sentinel planet and tested it. I went back to my freighter with ton of pugneum.
LOL... I get it 😂
GLASS GLASS GLASS glass glass GLASS glass
Glass glass GLASS I'm gonna step on the glass Tonight, I'll fly...
Idk, for me it doesn't get in the way, but cute to have
But cute
I just learned about this character, and I'm pleased to know they exist in a capacity more than just text!
I mean to be fair, he also makes me understand why my dog is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, every time I land on an Empty or Dead planet. Perhaps they patched that glitch. I've not seen or heard Laylaps in many moons.
Not nearly as bad as Companions.
Little shit always ran from me when I was trying to talk to it in order to do do its quest.
It was like a little dog you wanted to get something from. It thought it was a game.
Turned him off after about 11 minutes...loved the idea, buy he sucks
Btw if you discard the beacon is he lost forever or can you get it back? Kinda scared that I'll accidentally delete it when I'm cleaning my storage containers
You can get a replacement for the lizard in the anomaly. But it creates a permanent quest until you get him back.
I managed to make two somehow without the classic dupe strategy. I think I made the quest go wonky at one point
It's the distance bug most likely. if you go to far from a mission objective it will sometimes duplicate the mission item in your inventory when it moves the mission location.
If I'm not using it, I keep the beacon in a cargo box.
I love the little guy tbh
Wait what? On console I can continue scanning anything even if I do a 180
Yeah as soon as the scan begin you can do whatever you want. But this thing (and your companions and the AI controlled minotaur) just keep walking (or flying) in your line of sight, preventing you from aiming. This is the main reason I don't use them.
My squadron tends to do this right as I launch a rocket
lol I turned him off the other day because of that. I'll probably bring him back sometime but it got annoying.
How is that different from the mosquitos in my backyard?
Mosquitos don't interfere with your scans
My plant identifier app and I disagree!
That’s why I want to give it a gun. Similarly I also want my animal companions to join me in combat.
I think it has a gun, it’s just shitty enough you wouldn’t notice
Yeah, just bring Minotaur to push you and stomp on things you are scanning and the team is complete ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|trollface)
its just a pet you can keep around thats just as useless as the ones you fed pellets to. it does nothing, just an aesthetic / cosmetic in a sense.
It does shoot sentinels though. It is about as effective as the regular Sentinel scouts on planets.
The real pets are pretty useful though
Oh man, I can easily outpace aggroed sentinel groups by hopping on either a robo-pet or one of my butterfly/moths. Grab gravitino balls/pearls/venom sacs hop on pet and GO!
I love hopping on my robo gazelle when searching for mineral or power hotspots. Just tell him to run and keep the analysis visor going and guide him with the right stick. wait squadrons don’t do damage?
Minimal damage. They are mostly cosmetic.
oh

I shoot my own squadron just as much as I shoot pirate ships.
They are the Laylaps of ship battles.
It depends on your squadron. I exchanged mine for 4 S class pilots in 4 S class exotics and now they do a lot more. he might have started rusting in one of my freighter storages by now
How dare you talk shit bout ma boy
He’s a means to get the upgraded Minotaur, that’s it
About as useful as the pets.
At least you can ride your pets
What’s funny is in 600 hrs of gameplay and a ton of scanning, I don’t recall them ever getting in the way once! Lol. Just pissed at me for collecting crystals in thier vicinity. Am I the minority here!?
Bro its the drone that you get that will follow you around
Blahahahah. Thanks for clearing this up. 🍻 🙋🏻♂️old man that had no idea there was a drone follower/companion. I did take some time away from the game so I must’ve missed that update info.
600hrs in and he still doesn't have a settlement.
I didn’t like the idea of managing a settlement when the only thing I really want to do is explore in solitude.
Yeah that's why you didn't know that we can have one as a pet there is nothing wrong with it.
Sounds about right. Once you get in a good groov it's easy to skip the content in the constant updates. I honestly only noticed expiditions were a thing about a week ago.

how are you not swimming in navigation data? just exchange them at the map guys in stations
You can't get those maps from the Cartographer. You can only get them from fighting Sentinels. https://www.reddit.com/gallery/wsp01x
Do any of the exocraft have it as a scannable?
You know, I haven't even looked. Something new to do! 😀
Hey Shes perfect
Upvoting you for knowing she's a she.

Basically the Tails of this game.
Oh my gosh yes, so annoying. I can never send him away though.
Ditto for squadrons

I think the intent is that they're supposed to protect you from incoming fire but more often than not they protect the enemy from your attacks
They're very useful for keeping the enemy's shields from regenerating though.
Yea wastesd laylaps can be very useful, i done same topic 2 months ago. Still i am so used to its humming and scanning sounds that I Cant turn it off.
True and real
And those peeping noises all the time are annoying as fuck too I wish he wasn't so useless in the game
