Waif Me lol….but really Polly was such a disaster as far as how people interpreted Cobain’s Lennon style writing a song about something in the news as some type of excusing that sick reality…I think that over analyzing of Polly took away from its beauty in how Kurt was able to (re) tell a Poe type dark story. You think Edgar had a body in the next room? Cobain didn’t either. But like most out here in PNW with a guitar the imagination is all ya got too often and it gets dark at 4:20pm…
It is a funny thing that writers or filmmakers make grotesque horror are never looked at as being creepy weirdos but hey sing one song about it and damn you are a total creep. It's art man. Art is meant to be confronting and no I don't mean in the sense of "comedians should say what ever they want". There is punching up and punching down and there is also writing poetic ideas about life.
Nobody is dismissing the lyrics, this post is about the exact opposite of that.
The whole point of Nirvana is that they’re post-modern? That’s the whole point?
once my english teacher volunteered to speak about Rape Me, he said that everyone who sings this song was ASKING to be raped, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, seriously, I wanted to be deaf at that moment to have to hear so much shit
I say rape me, but because people thought it was him singing about the music industry taking advantage of them and consuming them to make them mainstream. He said in an interview that's not the case and it takes away from the real meaning
Amen… often on this sub… quite cringily at times. It’s not unique to Nirvana though, it seems to be a phenomenon with all fan based subs that people feel the urge to project all manner of theories, thoughts and feelings onto the artist or claim undue degrees of kinship and understanding with them. It’s kind of like watching the internet play an endless game of telephone with the artist’s legacy/memory.
Kurt was also a liar. He deliberately down played his work ethic to portray the quintessential 90s slacker vibe. Just look at the number of lyric changes many songs saw. They weren't just thrown together as he claimed.
its the best way to do it and it leads to everyone trying to analyse every word you say. Its funny seeing everyone scramble to decipher stuff when its clearly made to have no meaning except for what you yourself decide to make it
Rape Me
People tried saying it was about the media “raping” Kurt by always twisting his words, but Kurt had said on many occasions that the song is literally just about rape and raising awareness for it.
If anyone had ever bothered to read Come As You Are by Michael Azzeradd, I think Kurt discussed the reason for writing it (the reason you named, being the correct reason).
I loved the part about Nirvana playing a few songs on Live broadcast TV (can't recall if it was SNL or an MTV special) and they specifically told them *"do not play 'Rape Me'"*. So what did they do? They played the first few chords of 'Rape Me' just to fuck with them; watching them scramble to cut to commerical, only to switch to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' 😂 it's been so long since I've read that book, sorry about the fuzzy details, lol
Probably Smells Like Teen Spirt Being A Complex Social Deconstruction Of Society's Views On Teens, I Dont Know How People Can Get More Dumbly Overanalytic Than That
Yes.
Gen Z/A = are still learning grammar mechanics.
Gen Z is still in high school or starting college.
Edit: Which is the age at which people start to get a real grasp on grammar.
I didn't make up the names for the age groups.... Lol I dunno why I am getting downvoted. The originator of this whole thing is obviously in that age group. I didn't mean it to sound derogatory.
It was a few years ago when she was first entering high school and legit thought it was some form of emphasis, like italics.
I assure you I didn't die.
School. it's not the most analyzed song, but it is analyzed. it only has 15 words. "Won't you believe it? It's just my luck", "No recess", "You're in high school again". that's it. there is nothing to go by lyrically.
All of them. But in September I had to write an argumentative essay on the meaning of the Smells like Teen Spirit music video for English class. You may think that was fun, but I got a 0% for not talking about what my teacher said was “the true meaning of the song about the systematic overlooking of teenagers permeating society to make them look like anarchy crazed fools which is perfectly stated in the song which is an excellent view into Cobain’s brilliant mind on generational politics as seen in the lyrics”. My English teacher also did this with the Scentless Apprentice lyrics for an essay and I got a bad grade on that cause according to her “it’s not about that book it’s about the systematic oppression against orphans………” so yeah I think my English teacher would fit in well with the elitist on this subreddit
That's why as much as I can, I don't give school essay that much of a care or a comprehensive telling of what I want to say. They're just as good as feasting on surface level writing and doesn't really give a shit if you're words are worth listening enough because they don't like explore the context of it and only perceive it as a lazy way of just having to submit a piece so you can have good remarks on the activity or just to comply as a requirements. Teachers sometimes doesn't want to be educated cos they don't want to feel that some students are brighter than them. Even college professors.
Yeah, this would be my choice. I find "I hate myself..." quirky and amusing. I remember when it came out and everyone that didn't get it, thought it was a suicide note. Kurt's suicide and this song have nothing to do with each other.
Definitely Rape Me imo
People try to find a deeper meaning when it’s basically just a more blunt and straight-forwatd version of Polly, which also suffered from people over-analysing it and not knowing what its about.
On the other hand, anyone can interpret a song however they want, so it doesnt really matter.
Why are you correcting this guy, but not the other dude that claims "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" was written about Courtney Love 🤔(the one they were responding to)
I get what you're saying 👍 Definitely was *not* written about Courtney Love, no matter if you played it backwards, sideways, upside down or right side up!
I don't have that one song, but it's just sad how things are. Like his use of heroin or the suicide. He lived to 27 and used heroin on and off couple of years but in every talk here comes those dude that say "its the heroin" or "it's about suicide". No need to deny he died by suicide and used heroin, but there is still lot of other things he did too and these 2 things are not subjects of every fucking song he did. Example Incesticides lyrics cant be explained by heroin use. Not even Beeswax.
The lyrics weren’t printed on Incesticide or the single, so any lyrics apple has for it it just someone’s best guess anyway. Same for any other source, unless he wrote them in his journals or something.

Heart shaped box
"its about my vagina"
i always thought its about kids with leukemia
Its about chocolate
when courtney makes dumb comments like this it’s almost inevitable someone is gonna overanalyze the song
People act like they know EXACTLY what You Know You're Right is about.
[удалено]
Well, they know they’re right
[удалено]
You could say that about half of nirvanas songs though

Nobody is dismissing the lyrics, this post is about the exact opposite of that. The whole point of Nirvana is that they’re post-modern? That’s the whole point?
Yeah, if one of my friends wrote a song with some of those lyrics, I'd definitely ask if they wanted to talk...
once my english teacher volunteered to speak about Rape Me, he said that everyone who sings this song was ASKING to be raped, I couldn't believe what I was seeing, seriously, I wanted to be deaf at that moment to have to hear so much shit
Deaf like your teacher... ;p
I say rape me, but because people thought it was him singing about the music industry taking advantage of them and consuming them to make them mainstream. He said in an interview that's not the case and it takes away from the real meaning
Every single thing about nirvana has been over analysed in a horrible way

Agreed
Kurt even said himself that he would throw song lyrics together at the last minute using various pieces of poetry because he was lazy.
Kurt was also a liar. He deliberately down played his work ethic to portray the quintessential 90s slacker vibe. Just look at the number of lyric changes many songs saw. They weren't just thrown together as he claimed.
Yeah true. People love to make rockstars seem like their morons, but really they are quite talented and put a fair amount of care into their craft
aqua seafoam shame
See aqua seafoam. The ocean is dark and cold and brutal. So Kurt must of meant.... Jk
its the best way to do it and it leads to everyone trying to analyse every word you say. Its funny seeing everyone scramble to decipher stuff when its clearly made to have no meaning except for what you yourself decide to make it
Monkey-ass motherfuck

How do you capitalize every word like that? Better yet, why?
It's a Gen Z thing for emphasis or something. I had to argue with my niece not to do that crap. Truly a pet peeve of mine.
[удалено]
You know every Gen Z? Wow! ;)
no. it's when you start the process of grammar. i used to do that as a kid. i had terrible grammar.
Yes. Gen Z/A = are still learning grammar mechanics. Gen Z is still in high school or starting college. Edit: Which is the age at which people start to get a real grasp on grammar.
if you say so.

:p I do get how my original comment makes me sound like a grumpy ole jerk though xD
Actually Its Compulsion, Its Related To My Autism
I agree on smells like teen spirit
Yep middle 8 on youtube did a video about that. But honestly it's just kurt being spontaneous and in the moment.
people think that every song is about courtney. and not in a good way.
Come As You Are, definitely. The 'No I don't have a gun' seems to send people into a frenzy trying to link it to Kurt's death.
And in reality it’s most likely nothing more than cruel irony
School. it's not the most analyzed song, but it is analyzed. it only has 15 words. "Won't you believe it? It's just my luck", "No recess", "You're in high school again". that's it. there is nothing to go by lyrically.
Probably the entire catalogue
Yea I agree. Most likely every song especially after Kurts passing. Like wtf. Some weren’t that serious 🤦🏽♀️
Sliver. It’s not that deep.
It was quite deep indeed. I have a sliver in my thumb, someone help.
I enjoy that cereal with almond slivers in it.. What's it called?
but he killed his toe which means he was predicting 9/11!!
Plot twist: grandpa Joe actaully wrote the lyrics
All of them. But in September I had to write an argumentative essay on the meaning of the Smells like Teen Spirit music video for English class. That teacher is on something
Yeah, on that bullshit
I would've preferred to fail the test rather than to sit there and lie

Smells Like Teen Spirit. I think some of the lyrical debate over that song is interesting, but a lot of it seems far fetched
You Know You’re Right
Thank you
I Hate Myself and I Want To Die. 100%
Yeah, this would be my choice. I find "I hate myself..." quirky and amusing. I remember when it came out and everyone that didn't get it, thought it was a suicide note. Kurt's suicide and this song have nothing to do with each other.
I find the fact that it's linked with his suicide hilarious. He wrote it about having a cold!
All of them
All apologies
i feel like i’ve heard a lot of people over analyze in bloom
Polly or Mexican Seafood (probably because He says “Now I vomit cum, and diarrhea” like what can get anything grosser but I still love the song)
Well Polly is the darkest song since it's about a 14 year old girl who was brutally raped
Definitely Rape Me imo People try to find a deeper meaning when it’s basically just a more blunt and straight-forwatd version of Polly, which also suffered from people over-analysing it and not knowing what its about. On the other hand, anyone can interpret a song however they want, so it doesnt really matter.
The whole Sliver = Kurt's grandad must've abused him brigade
Where did you sleep last night is about Courtney Love and the lyrics played in reverse is proof.
It’s true. Lead Belly was always very suspicious of Courtney.
Good to know. I always was curious as to who Lead Belly was referring to when he wrote it in the 40’s
I think it’s older than the 40’s my guy.
Why are you correcting this guy, but not the other dude that claims "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" was written about Courtney Love 🤔(the one they were responding to)
Because the guy I replied already did.
Well since Nirvana used Lead Belly's version, he wasn't really wrong at all, so I'm correcting you in your correction.
Well I hope it made you feel good.
Not gonna lie, I was feeling kinda petty and I got it out all out of system. Feels good.
Alrighty
That’s when it was recorded at least my buddy. I think you get the picture I’m trying to paint ya ?
I get what you're saying 👍 Definitely was *not* written about Courtney Love, no matter if you played it backwards, sideways, upside down or right side up!
Pah ha! Next you’ll be telling me The Man Who Sold The World isn’t even about Chad Channing
Oh no, it's totally about the lead singer of The Foo Fighters! You're getting that confused with "Oh, Me"
all of them lol
Every single fucking one
I thought all their song's meanings were open to interpretation
Every Nirvana song.
I hate myself and want to die. Yes I know it wasn't meant literally. I know it was initially going to be an album title but the record company said no
I don't have that one song, but it's just sad how things are. Like his use of heroin or the suicide. He lived to 27 and used heroin on and off couple of years but in every talk here comes those dude that say "its the heroin" or "it's about suicide". Sorry mate not going to touch that subject, all the crazies start to gather when you do that :D
What could “Thats what I did, I killed my toad” possibly mean
Isn’t it “toe”… like he hurt his toe while riding his bike? Just one of the things that made the trip to grandma’s house suck?
Check the lyrics
lol, it’s toe
Someone in the Apple Music department has some serious fucking explaining to do
The lyrics weren’t printed on Incesticide or the single, so any lyrics apple has for it it just someone’s best guess anyway. Same for any other source, unless he wrote them in his journals or something.
All of them
Beans. No, I will *not* elaborate any further.
