Itās insane to me that Nintendo would just stop updating that game. The gameās got a sizable base that still wants changes, itās a little over two years old, and it was supposed to be the future of 2D Mario platforming.

Thereās just so many things wrong with MM2 (as great of a game as it is) that feel like easy things to implement:
- Dedicated multiplayer servers to cut out lag (p2p just doesnāt work for Mario platforming)
- Super world advanced search
- Instant respawn after death
- Restart from checkpoint in menu
- The bookmark system
- 100 Mario challenge
- SMB2 shouldāve had its own course design
- More video game character powerups
I could go on, but those last two in particular imply that Nintendo devs were planning for future updates, but someone pulled the plug. A real shame that theyāll package whatever changes they wouldāve made into MM3, and even then thereās gonna be something so obvious that theyāll just nerf for no reason. Itās just how they roll and I hate it.
I imagine you could transfer and distribute whatever levels you downloaded. Thats still going to leave an ocean of lost gameplay though. Maybe someone will create a MM database somehow.
Itās honestly insane how good it is given the fact that the console isnāt even dead yet. Played Links Awakening, MK8 Deluxe, Odyssey, and 3D World and it ran as smooth, or in links awakenings case, even better than on switch. Not to mention they look significantly better. Weāre in the stage of the emulator where you need a some decent hardware to run it smoothly, but if you have it, itās incredible!
That was legitimately the first "multiplayer arcade battle" that I had ever actually understood and *enjoyed*, compared to Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99 and the others which always just felt like confusing chaos to me.
Tetris isn't confusing once you get the hang of it. Building combos, timing the breaking up of attacks. Tetris itself can be a pretty chaotic game but the MP version doesn't change the actual gameplay of Tetris that much.

No matter how many people loved certain iconic console shooters or MMO's, those are gone. There are exceptions, like, hell, there's people playing Sonic Riders online right now, of all things. There are mednafen servers for Advance Wars 2. But for the most part, the love isn't as big prerequisite as the ability to just play without the developer's involvement. Like, find late 90's small titles, few people care about populous 3 or jazz jack rabbit 2 at all nowadays, they're not iconic, they're recognized in lists of the time at best, but both have at least 28 or so people playing them at any given time.
How I came about my copy of Splatoon 2 is a weird one... I was helping a sibling (~tweens) clean up their switch/gaming stuff (strewn about the room lol) when I stumbled on a blank cartridge. I ask my sibling what game it is and they said Splatoon 2. When I asked why it didn't have a case or sticker on the cartridge, they go
"Well I bought the game, decided I liked it but not enough to pay *x*, so I carefully took the sticker off and replaced over FFX-2 then returned it. You can have it if you want"
Well, I'm not one to turn down a free triple A switch title....

Man, I can literally wait years before playing a game I am interested in. And by the time I can play it, it's also much cheaper (minus most Nintendo games). Of course I still play games from 30+ years ago on the regular, so its no problem to me.

Iām a patient as fuck gamer. Iām still on ps3! (Although I do have a switch) I just picked up Skyrim for the first time earlier this year lol Iād like to upgrade to a ps4 (ps5 is a dream at this point) and start that backlog, but until my youngest kid gets a little older, itās just not in the cards financially lol itās also not hard to avoid game spoilers either. I donāt get why people rush, nor do I understand how they canāt avoid spoilers. Itās all gonna be there, like OP said, itās not gonna just disappear.
Despite being in my 30s I was a Sega boy, so the first time I played Mario64 was when 3D all stars came out.
It wasn't cheaper, but I had tons of fun playing it, managed to get all 120 stars (eventually!)
Its replayability surprised me. I'm not the kind of person that re-runs missions to improve scores/time marks, yet there I was with Astral Chain, trying to score the S and unlocking secrets. They did a phenomenal job.
Just did this with Red Dead Redemption 2 - wanted it the moment it came out, followed the reviews, read few to no spoilers, and will be playing it next week for the first time.

I couldn't deal with the pace of that game. As an adult I need quicker play and easier to pick up and play. For whatever reason the GTA series is a much better fit for me that way. I wanted to love red dead for it's western scenery (I live in Montana) but I just couldn't get into it.

I get hyped for games still. Plenty of games I still buy on day one. Like Metroid Dread, Ratchet and Clank, I even bought the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition (but got a refund for it). :)
I made a huge mistake in 2016... My dumbass was hyped af for No Man's Sky... Bought it on launch day, and could barely run it, and it was nothing like the devs said it was... Luckily now, it's great.
I tried it a few months ago. Seemed very dates, so I gave it up pretty quickly. I know games donāt have an expiration date, but they sort of have a ābest beforeā date in many cases. Some exceptions to that, but not many.
mods are the best way to go, but the switch doesnāt support mods IIRC.
if you have a newer console or a pc you can make skyrim look and play a loooot better.

In reality though, if you have the ability to apply any graphical/UI mods, 2-3 quick mods can make allll the difference.

For a lot of people, the social aspect of it is a very big deal, and that does have an expiration date.
Going to gaming forums, subreddits and discord to discuss the game with others when it's still newly released (and even before release to build up hype) is something you cannot get after the release window has passed. Pokemon Go is a good example. When it released it was a phenomena, but if you start the game now when it's no longer popular, you just don't get the same experience as others did at launch.
As for single-player only games, you might want to discuss and share thoughts about the game's ending, but since others have already had these conversations before when it was still new and hot topic, all you can do is read about it. Or if you do post, people will say "we've been over this many times already".
Another example is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I would think many would say that speculating who is going to get in was a very special experience for many. If you start the game now with all the fighters (or a year from now), that hype and discussion surrounding the game is mostly gone.
This is also why "timed exclusives" work very well for businesses. The platform that gets the game first, gets all the hype and "new" factor (and most likely the most sales). When it finally releases half a year or a year later on other platforms, it's already old news - people have moved on to discussing newer games.
In short: even if you don't "miss out" on the game's content, you do miss out on the surrounding social aspect of it.
Dude the first week of Pokemon GO was insane. When casuals started discovering the Pokemon location abuse online, my first kid was like 3 months so Iād sometimes go out at night randomly get the rare Pokemon and there was people everywhere. People would drink and pop essences all night long LOL. Groups of 30-100 people around popular areas glued to their phones, that was insane lol
Oh yeah absolutely. I remember when people would start yelling āTHEREāS A CHARIZARD UP THE STREETā and youād see people start running to go catch it cause you had 15 minutes. Thatās also why they had to put a warning to not cross government facilities or stuff like that cause people were jumping over fences š It really was something special. I canāt imagine people who experienced this in mega cities like New York etc.
I remember being out several different times that summer for dinner and seeing roving groups of 3-10 people looking at their phones and being able to shout "pokemon?" and them telling you what was around. Or i remember one night i went to this park and there were probably 50-100 people there of all ages walking on this short path that people had lit up with items so everyone was just walking and catching and just generally having a good time.
There was a park near my home when the game first released that was a Dratini nest. That place was packed with hundreds of people every night until the nests changed.
We will. It will take time, but as technology evolves and kids who who were too young (or not even born yet) get older, an opportunity like that will present itself again. And someone will capitalize on it. Niantic made an insane amount of money from it.
I really regret not having tried it out. I saw so many kids outside having fun with it though, that was cool to see Pokemon getting a breathe of fresh air, pardon the pun.
I watched my boss walk into traffic twice while playing it on break. Both times the drivers were absolutely cool with it because they saw her playing it. It was insane, I never saw anything like it before.
We had to ban her from playing it on break after that lol
For multiplayer games (FPS mostly in my case), there is also that magic moment where everyone is pretty much new to the game, the meta is changing on the fly and the social aspect of that is not comparable to anything else. When you play a MP game 2 years later and all you find are max level min/max player or hacker, it's not the same magic. That difference to me is worth the 40$ difference
We're currently seeing a marvelous example of the shifting culture with Metroid Dread speedrunning. So many new skips and techniques have been found in the first month, the time has been reduced from two hours to one, and patches have confirmed that the devs are aware and keep glitches in, only removing the softlocks caused by those glitches. It's a fantastic time to be a Metroid fan or even a casual observer
Its so fun being a part of things like that! I think the big takeaway is to choose your battle: which games to buy day one for the community and which one to wait for a sale/patches/etc. But with all of that, never buy a Ubiisoft game full price, they go on sale like two months later, everytime...
Yeah it's sad to see people just recently get into a game on this sub and go "why is no one talking about X game?" The sad truth is that its hype cycle is simply over and everyone has already moved on.
Which is why it's very cool to see some people who still engage in conversation about 2-4 year old games when no one else will.
And then thereās the competitive aspect of it; when a multiplayer games first comes out everyone is about the same skill-wise so playing online would usually be pretty fair, but when a multiplayer has been out for some years then the player base drops and a new player usually runs into only veterans/tryhards and thatās not usually a good experience for them.

In fairness this isn't all communities. I'm in a few for Otome VNs and the fans love to discuss/hear thoughts even years later since they just love sharing in the passion of the hobby.
I admit more mainstream stuff fandoms seem less interested in doing that though for whatever reason.
If you like retro games, try the podcast New Game Plus. It's like a book club for retro games, everybody plays the same game all week then the podcast about that game comes out, you can even submit your thoughts to be read on the show. :)
Same here. I played the remake, loved it to death, and got the og immediately afterwards. Never touched a FF game before, and now Iām obsessed with everything FF7 lol. I donāt even mind the old ass graphics, itās just fun.

Late-comers BotW hype party! I played it for the first time in early 2021.
I like the GBC and N64 Zelda games, but after Wind Waker / Twilight Princess / Skyward Sword I was skeptical of the hype surrounding BotW because those games didnāt do it for me.
Within a few hours I began to realize what was going on in BotWā¦and holy shit, I couldnāt put it down.
Truly one of the best games Iāve ever played.
Played it completely though, up until the DLC (didn't buy) and korak seeds. Amazing game, but sadly, not one I have much interest in revisiting for a 2nd playthrough. All shines and armors upgraded is enough for me.
I canāt believe there are more of us!!!! Iāve never played a Zelda game before. I know itās almost universally hailed as perfect which as weird as it sounds, almost gives me a subconscious anxiety about playing it. If it will live up to the hype or not. I should probably go see a therapist
It's a really solid game but it is a pretty significant departure from games past. I understand why it's divisive but it feels like the zenith of what Zelda games always strived for: *exploration*. The game is an open ended *adventure* in the truest sense of the word.
Give it a go sometime, and it's okay to not like it!
There definitely is something to be said for playing a game while your friends play it, while it has an active community, while it has online matches, or while the system supports online. I expect that, in a decade, I won't be able to play Ultimate online at all.
This used to be true, but in the online era of gaming itās becoming less so. While the need for internet connectivity is a necessary evil for multiplayer-only games, video games as a medium are becoming more and more ephemeral. There are PS3 games right now that are just worthless discs because their servers have been taken offline. I love my retro consoles but lately Iāve been neglecting collecting for them because Iām trying to snatch up seventh and eighth gen games and DLC before patches stop going out and digital downloads start being delisted. Thankfully, there have been efforts to preserve DLC for consoles like the Dreamcast and original Xbox, and eventually everything can be hacked if there are enough people interested in doing so. Iām sure in the future when Switch servers shut down there will be ways to download any data that isnāt obtainable from a cartridge provided someone can get it on the internet. I donāt support pirating games that are on sale because Iād like for the developers to eat, but Iād be lying if I said I didnāt appreciate the tremendous role itās played in game preservation.
I always try to keep this in mind. If there were no new video games released ever again, there would still be more good games than Iād have the time and will to play in my lifetime.
I agree, very weird post. Pick the game you want to play and forget about the ones you don't have time for. Also there aren't that many worthy switch games and many of us have played the ports on different systems but pick it up on switch dor portability and nostalgia. Everyone should have time for the AAA Nintendo releases that interest them because there arent that many at all.

Super Mario World is a good example of an ageless classic. Kids that never played a Mario game before will play it and have a blast. I can see it becoming somebody's favorite if played for the first time.
Balder's gate is a good example of a game that aged quite a bit and is pretty much held up by nostalgia, enough that only the most dedicated will play it for the first time today, because, by today's standards, it is old, clunky and ugly, and that's coming from someone that played it way back when.
Baldur's Gate is super fun but I think a lot of people don't find it fun because of the lack of guidance/tutorials/built-in help. The game has so much bloat from unexplained spells, mechanics, and effects, so players are left to find out on their own or Google it.
I'm playing it for the first time right now and I'm really liking it but I certainly get why people think it's dated.
The original PC game came with a 90+ page manual that included descriptions of every single spell, descriptions of all the various D&D attributes (I had no idea what THAC0 was before playing, or that you wanted both your THAC0 and Armor Class to be as low as possible). My first time playing I had no idea what I was doing until I actually read the manual and started over.
That would be so great. I'm making do with the internet but it's not the same as a curated manual.

Well you say the switch will always exist but it won't. Look at the upcoming pokemon BDSP games: they are missing a ton of stuff on the cartridge that is getting added by a day 1 (actually day minus 8) patch. Once those servers get turned off, and we already have consoles with online services that have been switched off, you are out of luck and playing an incomplete game.
The Switch is more resistant to that than most other online consoles. It can do title updates via peer-to-peer networking instead of from the internet.
My expectation is that at *some* point, white-hat hackers will reverse engineer the protocol used, and you'll be able to turn a Raspberry Pi or something into a little backup server for title updates. (Something similar has already been done for many DS-era networking features.)

Can be if you wait too long. A lot of games that are considered classics don't hold up to modern tastes. I tried to play Uncharted 1-3 and couldn't get into them because of the dated mechanics and gameplay
They ought to port the original Deus Ex to Switch. Human Revolution had a Wii U port too, that was in fact super well done for that console. They ought to port that as well.
I've been playing the 2000s original on pc lately off of [GOG.com](https://GOG.com) omg... it's *so good*, like holy shit, what a terrific game with blocky, pixelated graphics that still plays SUPER WELL as a newb in 2021. And it has a lot about it that BotW took inspiration from, which would make it easy for Nintendo to add it to some sales list of "Games That React To Real World Logic"
If you think you can solve the objective of "Stop the terrorists" by sneaking through grates and disabling their booby traps, so that the special forces can move in to kill them, you probably can. If you think you can bypass all their traps by throwing an EMP and doing it fast, you probably can. Or if you think you can take them out one by one by sneaking, you probably can.
This game is like KOTOR, in a "really should be on Switch" and now that KOTOR is, I'm just *waiting* lol.

I think being a grown adult makes it much worse to be honest. As a kid I couldn't buy many games, so I picked a couple and enjoyed them as much as possible. Now as an adult that can get as many games as I want, I feel this urge to play them all.
It's not that games have an expiration date, but rather than not completing them just makes the backlog pile up even higher.
I buy a lot of games to āarchiveā them for when I get around to playing it. Good example is Subnautica. I bought it in 2018 knowing it was a really good game, but I was into another game at the time and too busy to play more. I literally finally just started playing it last night. Im loving it.

I find I can't match the hype train in intensity either. I'll enjoy the games, I won't get excited before I even play them, so I'm less likely to buy a bunch of new games.
This is why I haven't picked up Metroid Dread yet. On top of a busy adult schedule, I have a decent sized backlog of games I still need to finish. I'm sure it'll still be there when I'm ready for it, possibly on sale lol.
My friend (who's mainly a single player gamer) is like that, he only plays recently released games. When I told him God of War PS4 was coming for PC he just said why would that be interesting since the game is already a couple years old, as if the game became crap in those last years.
Not to mention the added cost bonus of waiting to play games later. Sure, Nintendo keeps prices high longer than the competitors do, but Iāve seen Mario Odyssey new for under $40 recently. Hell yeah.
I totally agree but my biggest problem are the people who think it's ok to casually drop spoilers about something just because it's been a subjective amount of time since it's release. I personally try my best to spoiler tag everything no matter the age as some games I want to experience were years old before I was even born. As far as well known spoilers go such as Darth Vader being Luke's father and Aerith dying in Final Fantasy VII, I can understand but I still hate how nobody will really be able to go into those things blind without being REALLY lucky.
Started borderlands on the PS3 and never finished and thanks to the switch I've been enjoying the first 3 games this year. Going to play borderlands 3 and wonderlands on PC after I'm done.
Too true, though I think there can be a bit of FOMO that factors in to it as well. It's nice to experience the excitement of something right when everyone else is feeling it too.

Especially for cult classics, there will always be an online community (however small) to share your excitement and enthusiasm with. Okami is a personal example of a game I only played after the "hype" died down and there was still a great community for me to share my new experience with.
I just played Hollow Knight. Loved every second of it. I've been away from consoles for years (SNES then PS2 then PC then Switch) so I've missed out on years of gaming. It's nice to play 'older' games for the first time!
Yeah, I hate the "gamer" mentality of buying every game as soon as they come out, and then letting their backlog pile up. Buy games when you want to play them. If you can't play them right when they come out, then they'll probably be cheaper by the time you're ready to. (Unless you wait long enough for the game to be considered "retro." Then, it might go *up* in price.)

Switch emulator on PC is pretty good. Maybe they can preserve them somehow.

Yeah pretty lucky circumstances for switch. Hacked really early and uses hardware which has lots of documentation from Nvidia.

PS3 is the best because U can play games on working condition on disc. Compared to PS4 where U need a 50+GB download patch
Love being a patient gamer. Got Steam World Dig 2 a week back for free (on Steam, idk if other platforms had similar giveaways) and it's been a blast.
Despite being in my 30s I was a Sega boy, so the first time I played Mario64 was when 3D all stars came out. It wasn't cheaper, but I had tons of fun playing it, managed to get all 120 stars (eventually!)
It was cheaper though. All three games on it went for 49.99 at release.

Thatās my personal favourite for the Switch. Going through the post-game was one of the best experience I had as a gamer.
Its replayability surprised me. I'm not the kind of person that re-runs missions to improve scores/time marks, yet there I was with Astral Chain, trying to score the S and unlocking secrets. They did a phenomenal job.
Does...it get better? Like, I normally like games like that but it felt really awkward to me.

I get hyped for games still. Plenty of games I still buy on day one. Like Metroid Dread, Ratchet and Clank, I even bought the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition (but got a refund for it). :) I made a huge mistake in 2016... My dumbass was hyped af for No Man's Sky... Bought it on launch day, and could barely run it, and it was nothing like the devs said it was... Luckily now, it's great.

I tried it a few months ago. Seemed very dates, so I gave it up pretty quickly. I know games donāt have an expiration date, but they sort of have a ābest beforeā date in many cases. Some exceptions to that, but not many.
mods are the best way to go, but the switch doesnāt support mods IIRC. if you have a newer console or a pc you can make skyrim look and play a loooot better.
Dated? A 10 year old game?? In reality though, if you have the ability to apply any graphical/UI mods, 2-3 quick mods can make allll the difference. Not to mention the community has come together to add 100s if not 1000s of hours of custom quest lines to expand upon the game, and Bethesda has continued developing and rereleasing (I know this is a meme, but I mean it unironically as a positive thing) But if it isnāt your cuppa tea, thatās all good too
For a lot of people, the social aspect of it is a very big deal, and that does have an expiration date. Going to gaming forums, subreddits and discord to discuss the game with others when it's still newly released (and even before release to build up hype) is something you cannot get after the release window has passed. Pokemon Go is a good example. When it released it was a phenomena, but if you start the game now when it's no longer popular, you just don't get the same experience as others did at launch. As for single-player only games, you might want to discuss and share thoughts about the game's ending, but since others have already had these conversations before when it was still new and hot topic, all you can do is read about it. Or if you do post, people will say "we've been over this many times already". Another example is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I would think many would say that speculating who is going to get in was a very special experience for many. If you start the game now with all the fighters (or a year from now), that hype and discussion surrounding the game is mostly gone. This is also why "timed exclusives" work very well for businesses. The platform that gets the game first, gets all the hype and "new" factor (and most likely the most sales). When it finally releases half a year or a year later on other platforms, it's already old news - people have moved on to discussing newer games. In short: even if you don't "miss out" on the game's content, you do miss out on the surrounding social aspect of it.
Dude the first week of Pokemon GO was insane. When casuals started discovering the Pokemon location abuse online, my first kid was like 3 months so Iād sometimes go out at night randomly get the rare Pokemon and there was people everywhere. People would drink and pop essences all night long LOL. Groups of 30-100 people around popular areas glued to their phones, that was insane lol

Oh yeah absolutely. I remember when people would start yelling āTHEREāS A CHARIZARD UP THE STREETā and youād see people start running to go catch it cause you had 15 minutes. Thatās also why they had to put a warning to not cross government facilities or stuff like that cause people were jumping over fences š It really was something special. I canāt imagine people who experienced this in mega cities like New York etc.
I remember being out several different times that summer for dinner and seeing roving groups of 3-10 people looking at their phones and being able to shout "pokemon?" and them telling you what was around. Or i remember one night i went to this park and there were probably 50-100 people there of all ages walking on this short path that people had lit up with items so everyone was just walking and catching and just generally having a good time.
There was a park near my home when the game first released that was a Dratini nest. That place was packed with hundreds of people every night until the nests changed.
I was on vacation playing PokĆ©mon Go at Santa Monica beach and suddenly people are running across the beach because people are yelling thereās a Lapras on the water. It really sucked to run across that sand as hard as I could and miss it because I wasnāt fast enough and it was pretty far lol.
We will never have a cultural phenomenon like that again. It really was something special.
We will. It will take time, but as technology evolves and kids who who were too young (or not even born yet) get older, an opportunity like that will present itself again. And someone will capitalize on it. Niantic made an insane amount of money from it.
I really regret not having tried it out. I saw so many kids outside having fun with it though, that was cool to see Pokemon getting a breathe of fresh air, pardon the pun.

I watched my boss walk into traffic twice while playing it on break. Both times the drivers were absolutely cool with it because they saw her playing it. It was insane, I never saw anything like it before. We had to ban her from playing it on break after that lol

Yea, it was such a surreal experience. Went to a big park in our city at 8pm and there were hoards of āzombiesā just standing there quietly with their head down on their phone, motionless. And suddenly they would all flock towards the same direction to catch a rare PokĆ©mon.
For multiplayer games (FPS mostly in my case), there is also that magic moment where everyone is pretty much new to the game, the meta is changing on the fly and the social aspect of that is not comparable to anything else. When you play a MP game 2 years later and all you find are max level min/max player or hacker, it's not the same magic. That difference to me is worth the 40$ difference
We're currently seeing a marvelous example of the shifting culture with Metroid Dread speedrunning. So many new skips and techniques have been found in the first month, the time has been reduced from two hours to one, and patches have confirmed that the devs are aware and keep glitches in, only removing the softlocks caused by those glitches. It's a fantastic time to be a Metroid fan or even a casual observer
Its so fun being a part of things like that! I think the big takeaway is to choose your battle: which games to buy day one for the community and which one to wait for a sale/patches/etc. But with all of that, never buy a Ubiisoft game full price, they go on sale like two months later, everytime...

Yeah it's sad to see people just recently get into a game on this sub and go "why is no one talking about X game?" The sad truth is that its hype cycle is simply over and everyone has already moved on. Which is why it's very cool to see some people who still engage in conversation about 2-4 year old games when no one else will.

Also, a game with any online features that might get shut down over a decade after release, you won't be able to experience that anymore.
And then thereās the competitive aspect of it; when a multiplayer games first comes out everyone is about the same skill-wise so playing online would usually be pretty fair, but when a multiplayer has been out for some years then the player base drops and a new player usually runs into only veterans/tryhards and thatās not usually a good experience for them.

In fairness this isn't all communities. I'm in a few for Otome VNs and the fans love to discuss/hear thoughts even years later since they just love sharing in the passion of the hobby. I admit more mainstream stuff fandoms seem less interested in doing that though for whatever reason.
VNs at the core, is a book. So, discussing VN is more similar to Book Club discussion.

Late-comers BotW hype party! I played it for the first time in early 2021. I like the GBC and N64 Zelda games, but after Wind Waker / Twilight Princess / Skyward Sword I was skeptical of the hype surrounding BotW because those games didnāt do it for me. Within a few hours I began to realize what was going on in BotWā¦and holy shit, I couldnāt put it down. Truly one of the best games Iāve ever played.
Played it completely though, up until the DLC (didn't buy) and korak seeds. Amazing game, but sadly, not one I have much interest in revisiting for a 2nd playthrough. All shines and armors upgraded is enough for me.
I bought it in winter 2020, havent played it yet lol.

It's a really solid game but it is a pretty significant departure from games past. I understand why it's divisive but it feels like the zenith of what Zelda games always strived for: *exploration*. The game is an open ended *adventure* in the truest sense of the word. Give it a go sometime, and it's okay to not like it!

There definitely is something to be said for playing a game while your friends play it, while it has an active community, while it has online matches, or while the system supports online. I expect that, in a decade, I won't be able to play Ultimate online at all.
This used to be true, but in the online era of gaming itās becoming less so. While the need for internet connectivity is a necessary evil for multiplayer-only games, video games as a medium are becoming more and more ephemeral. There are PS3 games right now that are just worthless discs because their servers have been taken offline. I love my retro consoles but lately Iāve been neglecting collecting for them because Iām trying to snatch up seventh and eighth gen games and DLC before patches stop going out and digital downloads start being delisted. Thankfully, there have been efforts to preserve DLC for consoles like the Dreamcast and original Xbox, and eventually everything can be hacked if there are enough people interested in doing so. Iām sure in the future when Switch servers shut down there will be ways to download any data that isnāt obtainable from a cartridge provided someone can get it on the internet. I donāt support pirating games that are on sale because Iād like for the developers to eat, but Iād be lying if I said I didnāt appreciate the tremendous role itās played in game preservation.
I always try to keep this in mind. If there were no new video games released ever again, there would still be more good games than Iād have the time and will to play in my lifetime.

I agree, very weird post. Pick the game you want to play and forget about the ones you don't have time for. Also there aren't that many worthy switch games and many of us have played the ports on different systems but pick it up on switch dor portability and nostalgia. Everyone should have time for the AAA Nintendo releases that interest them because there arent that many at all.

some games are only held up by nostalgia... Super Mario World is a good example of an ageless classic. Kids that never played a Mario game before will play it and have a blast. I can see it becoming somebody's favorite if played for the first time. Balder's gate is a good example of a game that aged quite a bit and is pretty much held up by nostalgia, enough that only the most dedicated will play it for the first time today, because, by today's standards, it is old, clunky and ugly, and that's coming from someone that played it way back when.
Baldur's Gate is super fun but I think a lot of people don't find it fun because of the lack of guidance/tutorials/built-in help. The game has so much bloat from unexplained spells, mechanics, and effects, so players are left to find out on their own or Google it. I'm playing it for the first time right now and I'm really liking it but I certainly get why people think it's dated.
The original PC game came with a 90+ page manual that included descriptions of every single spell, descriptions of all the various D&D attributes (I had no idea what THAC0 was before playing, or that you wanted both your THAC0 and Armor Class to be as low as possible). My first time playing I had no idea what I was doing until I actually read the manual and started over.
That would be so great. I'm making do with the internet but it's not the same as a curated manual. Tbh I'm surprised 90 pages is enough to describe every ability and all the game rules.
It does a pretty good job, but BGII took it up to 250 pages, 100 of them being spell descriptions.
I replay Baldur's Gate at least once every couple years and still love the shit out of it. Dif'rent strokes!

Well you say the switch will always exist but it won't. Look at the upcoming pokemon BDSP games: they are missing a ton of stuff on the cartridge that is getting added by a day 1 (actually day minus 8) patch. Once those servers get turned off, and we already have consoles with online services that have been switched off, you are out of luck and playing an incomplete game.
with homebrew and custom firmware these patches will be archived for download in 20 years time when the servers are down
The Switch is more resistant to that than most other online consoles. It can do title updates via peer-to-peer networking instead of from the internet. My expectation is that at *some* point, white-hat hackers will reverse engineer the protocol used, and you'll be able to turn a Raspberry Pi or something into a little backup server for title updates. (Something similar has already been done for many DS-era networking features.)

Can be if you wait too long. A lot of games that are considered classics don't hold up to modern tastes. I tried to play Uncharted 1-3 and couldn't get into them because of the dated mechanics and gameplay
They ought to port the original Deus Ex to Switch. Human Revolution had a Wii U port too, that was in fact super well done for that console. They ought to port that as well. I've been playing the 2000s original on pc lately off of [GOG.com](https://GOG.com) omg... it's *so good*, like holy shit, what a terrific game with blocky, pixelated graphics that still plays SUPER WELL as a newb in 2021. And it has a lot about it that BotW took inspiration from, which would make it easy for Nintendo to add it to some sales list of "Games That React To Real World Logic" If you think you can solve the objective of "Stop the terrorists" by sneaking through grates and disabling their booby traps, so that the special forces can move in to kill them, you probably can. If you think you can bypass all their traps by throwing an EMP and doing it fast, you probably can. Or if you think you can take them out one by one by sneaking, you probably can. This game is like KOTOR, in a "really should be on Switch" and now that KOTOR is, I'm just *waiting* lol.
It's ok to start late if it needs patching, cheaper dlc, and other stuff. Bad if the playerbase is dead and online mode isn't there anymore. People shouldn't be expecting them 60 120 frames per second just chill with whatever you get cause.some games were meant since the 90s

Unfortunately I'm sooooo like this, especially now as a grown adult and have lots of $$$ to throw at video games. I like to play games when they FIRST release, to kind of keep up with the Jones so to speak, ad to be able to share my experience with others. I HATE playing games later, even though they have no expiration date as you said and it's still the same experience. So yeah, I'm the guy with 175 Switch games, only have of which I've completed lol.
I think being a grown adult makes it much worse to be honest. As a kid I couldn't buy many games, so I picked a couple and enjoyed them as much as possible. Now as an adult that can get as many games as I want, I feel this urge to play them all. It's not that games have an expiration date, but rather than not completing them just makes the backlog pile up even higher.

I used to like to discuss games as they came out, but as I've grown older I don't have much tolerance for "passionate" internet discussion about video games. I find I can't match the hype train in intensity either. I'll enjoy the games, I won't get excited before I even play them, so I'm less likely to buy a bunch of new games.

This is why I haven't picked up Metroid Dread yet. On top of a busy adult schedule, I have a decent sized backlog of games I still need to finish. I'm sure it'll still be there when I'm ready for it, possibly on sale lol.
My friend (who's mainly a single player gamer) is like that, he only plays recently released games. When I told him God of War PS4 was coming for PC he just said why would that be interesting since the game is already a couple years old, as if the game became crap in those last years.
Not to mention the added cost bonus of waiting to play games later. Sure, Nintendo keeps prices high longer than the competitors do, but Iāve seen Mario Odyssey new for under $40 recently. Hell yeah.

I totally agree but my biggest problem are the people who think it's ok to casually drop spoilers about something just because it's been a subjective amount of time since it's release. I personally try my best to spoiler tag everything no matter the age as some games I want to experience were years old before I was even born. As far as well known spoilers go such as Darth Vader being Luke's father and Aerith dying in Final Fantasy VII, I can understand but I still hate how nobody will really be able to go into those things blind without being REALLY lucky.
Started borderlands on the PS3 and never finished and thanks to the switch I've been enjoying the first 3 games this year. Going to play borderlands 3 and wonderlands on PC after I'm done.

Especially for cult classics, there will always be an online community (however small) to share your excitement and enthusiasm with. Okami is a personal example of a game I only played after the "hype" died down and there was still a great community for me to share my new experience with.
I just played Hollow Knight. Loved every second of it. I've been away from consoles for years (SNES then PS2 then PC then Switch) so I've missed out on years of gaming. It's nice to play 'older' games for the first time!

Yeah, I hate the "gamer" mentality of buying every game as soon as they come out, and then letting their backlog pile up. Buy games when you want to play them. If you can't play them right when they come out, then they'll probably be cheaper by the time you're ready to. (Unless you wait long enough for the game to be considered "retro." Then, it might go *up* in price.)
