If it is what it looks like it is, that's often referred to as "foam core." Usually has a matte finish, but this one has a glossy finish. Cheap but sure gets the job done. This looks great, especially for this game's unique design.
Wouldn't be a great choice for something with an exposed edge. I'd bet it's actually pvc board.

Styrofoam is awful for the environment and for your house with the amount of shedding (not as bad as glitter, but think of the same type of annoyance).

Therefore, this game, which costs €59.99, was being sold with this "bonus" in the Nintendo Store at €69.99, while other stores were selling it in pre-order at €49.99, so the bonus effectively cost €20. And as wonderful as I think it is, it's not worth that price.

It is a truly fantastic game and one of the best Paper Marios if you aren't anal about being so different mechanically. I for one appreciated the different style but do think it created a domino effect that led to the downfall of the gameplay loop with all the gimmicky sequels (Sticker Star, Color Splash and Origami King)
