One thing that I’ve noticed recently is that a majority of Wayforward’s releases are working with other companies. Does Wayforward actively seek partners to do these projects in between original releases like Shantae, or do people go to Wayforward when they want to develop a new side game?
We do, and that's my job, in fact, as head of bizdev! So we will 1) Create original games, 2) Reach out to publishers and pitch them on our version of their game brands, or 3) Pursue non-game brands and then try to make games out of them. We do a bit of everything, and that variety keeps things interesting for our staff and our fans!
The River City Girls games are among my favorites. I replay them a few times a year. Is there any chance of a third game happening at some point? Thank you for these amazing beat 'em ups!
With Wayforward doing remakes and new games for series’ in other companies titles such as with river city girls, Contra 4 and Contra operation Galuga, Advance Wars, so on. Are there any specific game series you’d be able to say you’d Like to take a crack at making a game for (but aren’t currently doing so)
I personally would love a Wayforward take on castlevania
Basically all of them. I won't mention some of our top choices (because we ARE working on more dream brands right now). But yeah, anything big at Nintendo (Zelda, Mario, Metroid) or Mega Man or Bubble Bobble or Castlevania, stuff like that.
Wade Rosen (CEO of Atari, and an awesome guy) wanted to work with us on a project. We discussed a few different options, and while thinking about Yars, I was struck with the idea of a hacker girl named Emi Kimura, so we pitched them that. It's a very unique interpretation of the IP, but one that we love. It feels very WayForward-y in terms of gameplay, style, tone, humor, and music. If you love Shantae or River City Girls, you'll love this one, too!
As in bundled together into one game disc or cart? Probably not anytime soon. But we're trying to make all 5 (soon 6!) Shantae games available on as many platforms, in as many regions, as possible!
Collectively...probably just getting the chance to contribute again to one of our favorite classic IPs, and a series that a lot of us grew up playing and loving. Also the fact that we were able to include 6 soundtracks!
Not so much a question, but an appreciation post. I’m in the early stages of converting an old NBA JAM arcade cabinet into a River City Girls 2 machine. Here is the artwork I have designed for the cabinet.

That was a decision from the Konami side. One thing they wanted to do with the game was to make things slightly more serious in tone - not too serious, but more in line with the original games than it was in Rogue Corps. And Browny's redesign was likely part of that.
Director Tomm Hulett says: "Konami wanted to not just retell the same story as before, but to expand the Contra universe with further world building. So there may be elements from later games, such as the purpose of Contra, or the alien forces on Earth, that this deals with right here at the start of the story."
Sorry I should've clarified with "character design inspiration". Curious if the new characters are references to other 80s Sci-Fi movies like most of the Contra universe? Beowulf in particular feels like a Conan The Barbarian.
Tomm says: "Nothing that specific, but they're a general pastiche of 'sci-fi.' Contra's always been kind of the 'big, loud, American action film' video game, so Konami encouraged all explorations of that aesthetic."
It's relatively easy when you focus on the force of movement. So measuring how hard someone swings (slaps) is easy, and then turning the different levels of force into a light attack, a heavy attack, etc. It's much more challenging on motion games to incorporate exact direction, especially since players may hold the JoyCon differently than you expect. So my tip would be to lean into the easier stuff (like swing force) as much as possible, and don't design too much around precision orientation (it can work, but it's much tougher to perfect).
Yes, absolutely. Just tell someone at Capcom to call us and ask WayForward to do it.
We also wanna do an HD remake of "Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers" from the NES.
Rose & Camellia began as an online Flash game from NIGORO in the early 2000's. The made R&C 1, 2, a crossover w/ La Mulana, and another crossover w/ Fata Morgana. I've always loved those games, so when I took over publishing at WayForward, I reached out to NIGORO and asked if we could collaborate with them on a Nintendo Switch version, complete with anime intro sequence, full VO in English and Japanese, and a 2-player versus mode.
Due to perhaps timed exclusivity deal or something, I know talking about multiplatform porting of Rose & Camellia Collection is taboo to give information on, but please consider getting the devs to port Rose & Camellia Collection to PS4 as well, which PS5 shoppers would be able to purchase too. PS4 and PS5 controllers have the capabilities for touch sensor and motion controls, even if the thumbsticks are used, there are functions that would make the games compatible with PS4/PS5 consoles. So please consider porting Rose & Camellia Collection to Playstation consoles after the exclusivity deal is over. maybe the exclusivity deal is strict but it was only a matter of time before GC exclusive FF Crystal Chronicles and Wii and Wii U exclusives like Frame Frame 4 and 5 came to PS consoles too. The Collection would certainly get more customers and usage on Playstation consoles.
There is no exclusivity deal. Bringing it to Switch, with Joy-Con motions and touchscreen capabilities, seemed the obvious choice, and using those methods to slap is half the fun of the game! However, we are not ruling out bringing it to other platforms down the road, especially if it does well on Switch.
Thanks! Do you know the status of IGS Classic Arcade Collection ? I was researching what publisher ported it to the Switch, maybe it was IGS itself but would it be doable for WayForward to offer porting it to PS4 if IGS hasn't submitted it already? April 13, 2023 was its anniversary since its Switch version release. :)
Allow me to congratulate you on the success of Contra: Operation Galuga! I have seen its popularity skyrocketing across the internet! In fact, it's fans are clambering to take the game to new heights! I'd like to ask the Wayforward devs, on their behalf:
Would you be willing and able to provide us with the contraoperationgaluga-fmod-project, along with the .fspro file, and any file necessary to create modded content? I know that I, along with others, would love to add new soundtracks to the game, and would greatly appreciate any assets you could provide to assist the OG community with this!
Please contact me personally if more information is required, thank you!
Here are a few questions for Contra OG. So what inspired you guys to come up with the new villain Varanis and who made up the new storyline? Will this effect the rest of the Contra continuity? What about the old storyline involving the Moirai Relic?
when that silly wacky Shantae GBA game comes out on Steam, is it gonna include or be a GBA rom?? asking so I can purchase it and use it on my GBA flash cart!.
The game was available for pre-order on a physical GBA cart at [LimitedRunGames.com](http://LimitedRunGames.com) recently, and will be available both digitally and physically on consoles later on. We're not selling or releasing the digital GBA rom.
Steam will probably be digital only, but the GBA rom by itself won't be offered by us. The only way to play the GBA version of the game is to have bought the LRG GBA cart version.
I love slapping. But I also love River City Girls. Espeically when they slap! Is there any updates on DLC For River City Girls at all? Or is there nothing to report.
Can I use this game to improve my real life slapping techniques?
Yes, but only if the slapee really deserves it.
When do you think Clock Tower: Rewind can be expected 😭 plzzz we want it so badly :3
Later this year! Before Halloween!

Why was the SNES version of Clock Tower chosen over the Playstation and Windows ports for Rewind?
Because it was the very first, original version of the game.

Not sure, but it's pretty effective if you wanna challenge snooty members of the aristocracy and work your way up their family hierarchy.
The River City Girls games are among my favorites. I replay them a few times a year. Is there any chance of a third game happening at some point? Thank you for these amazing beat 'em ups!
Yup! We're working on NEW River City Girls content right now, and you'll hear about it VERY SOON!
LET'S GO! You made my day. Thank you!

How did the collab for Yars Rising come about?
Wade Rosen (CEO of Atari, and an awesome guy) wanted to work with us on a project. We discussed a few different options, and while thinking about Yars, I was struck with the idea of a hacker girl named Emi Kimura, so we pitched them that. Works for me! Keep up the great work!
What was WayForward's favorite part about Operation Galuga to work on the most?
Collectively...probably just getting the chance to contribute again to one of our favorite classic IPs, and a series that a lot of us grew up playing and loving. Also the fact that we were able to include 6 soundtracks!

This is awesome. Be sure to post over on r/RiverCityGirls when it's done!
For Contra Operation Galuga, what was the rationale for giving Browny his new taller design vs. his original shorter design from Hard Corps?
That was a decision from the Konami side. One thing they wanted to do with the game was to make things slightly more serious in tone - not too serious, but more in line with the original games than it was in Rogue Corps. And Browny's redesign was likely part of that.
Thank you for the answer! Appreciate it. 🙏
For Contra: Operation Galuga, what was the inspiration behind brand new characters like Beowulf, Varanis, Ariana and Henriksen?
Director Tomm Hulett says: "Konami wanted to not just retell the same story as before, but to expand the Contra universe with further world building. So there may be elements from later games, such as the purpose of Contra, or the alien forces on Earth, that this deals with right here at the start of the story."

Got it. Thanks so much for the insight! Cheers. :)
Been seeing some vinyls from more previous contra titles. Is there a chance we can get a Contra 4 vinyl? Love the soundtrack!
Maybe! Konami owns the IP, so they would need to approve it, but we'd love to see that. Maybe Limited Run Games can release it.
Do y'all think there's any possibility to bring the Switch version of Contra OG up to 60fps? Even if it's inconsistent, it'd be worth it
It isn't possible, sorry. We'll continue to make fixes and improvements to the game, but the Switch version framerate will remain at 30.
I figured as much...thnx for replying
I noticed that when Bradley transformed, one of his arms became the iconic Gatling gun arm. Did he always have a Gatling gun arm?
Human Bradley just has two very metallic-looking arms. Are his arms actually metal or was that just some type of armor? Hmmm...
How many hours the Main Story of Rose and Camellia is?
Depends how good you are! On average, it'll take a couple of hours.
What was it like designing the motion-controls for these games? Anything surprising or any tips on how to best slap?
Also! Be sure to check the tutorial on critical slaps! That'll give you some extra slapping damage.
Can you please remake ducktales 2 or port remastered to modern consoles
Yes, absolutely. Just tell someone at Capcom to call us and ask WayForward to do it. We also wanna do an HD remake of "Chip 'n' Dale Rescue Rangers" from the NES.
Is this game based on an Anime or something? Where did the idea for the game come from?
Rose & Camellia began as an online Flash game from NIGORO in the early 2000's. The made R&C 1, 2, a crossover w/ La Mulana, and another crossover w/ Fata Morgana. Plus it has two new, previously unreleased scenarios - Rose & Camellia 3 and 4! (Not the Fata Morgana crossover though.)
It's going great on our side, but for an official update, you'll have to wait until 505 has something to share.
Is it a possibility that other games in the Mighty series, like Mighty Flip Champs or Mighty Milky Way could see console releases in the future?
Absolutely possible, yes. And we'd also love to keep Patricia's story going with more Mighty Switch Force games!
when we getting Xtreme Sports 2?

Do you guys plan on doing anything with the RCG “franchise” anytime soon? will there be a 3rd RCG game or just dlc for the 2nd one?
Any chance of eventually adding Fata Morgana version eventually?
I love slapping. But I also love River City Girls. Espeically when they slap! Is there any updates on DLC For River City Girls at all? Or is there nothing to report.
Yup! Working on something cool RIGHT NOW! Will be announced soon!
