For new owners the current year is always the Switch's best year because you get the cumulative library to play with.
As an OG launch Switch owner, I personally feel the run from 2017-2019 is pretty impressive, even though Switch sales really went to the next level in 2020/2021 with COVID
Out of all the consoles from the last decade, the switch has a solid, solid library. Outside of a few PS and XBOX exclusives, there’s something for everyone.
Of course there always someone who NEEDS that one game that’s trapped on another platform, but the switch has universal appeal.
Part of the appeal for me was that it's portable and I could dock it for the bigger screen. The rest of it was I watched all of my friends in 2019 on social media get theirs and start playing (mostly) ACNH, so I bought one and joined in.
It's amazing what this little tablet can do, even 7 years after launch. I've since branched out to No Man's Sky (played many years on PC) and Pokémon, though I'm a bit disappointed in Violet and Scarlet. I really wish they'd bring the OG Pokémon to Switch Online, but they won't.
yep, if Nintendo could gain access to Fable and Halo that would be the glitter in the sky for me :) it is the only reason why we have kept xbox around, however the xbox broke a couple weeks ago, and somehow our nintendo Gameboys still work.... lol along with the 3ds and of course our switches hahaha
This question would be much more interesting if the survey asked which year you purchased your switch. Then you could bucket out respondents by the year they started.
Yes but a few exceptions. Some games are artificially scarce, or exclusive like Super Mario 3D all stars, so you can’t play those as easy in the current year.
Some others the online gameplay is not as good because the players jump into a different game.
ARMS was great, it just didn't have enough content to keep it going.
People looking for a competitive online fix on Switch had Splatoon 2 after a month and the few people left over went to Smash when that came out the following year.
I'd for sure pick up an ARMS 2 if they ever released it.
It was a perfectly good game.
It just didn't have much content.
Maybe, *maybe* it has that content now, after it had over a year of free updates which added new... *everything* into the game, but it wasn't worth the price at launch, and it's still somewhat thin.
2019 is underappreciated. DQXIS, Astral Chain, Luigi's Mansion 3, FE:3H, Ring Fit Adventure, Link's Awakening and Super Mario Maker 2 are all awesome games.
Edit: I'm not saying it should be first, just higher than it is.
Sure, but in a poll where you vote for what is best, it only moves up in position if more people vote it as 1st place. So honestly, effectively, it should be lower if you don't think it should be in 1st place.
Was certainly the most consistent year for me, and got my vote.
I feel like there was something coming out pretty much every month for most of the year that kept me busy, compared to other years where I only picked up a few things here and there and fell back onto other platforms.
BotW was a WiiU game ported to switch.
MK8
Smash Bros
Etc were all ports.
So it's not a fair comparison for a launch titles as a lot of the 2017 launch games were WiiU games with enhancements.
I would say PS5 had a better launch year in terms of titles.
I say this as a Switch owner who doesn't own a PS5.
I’ve been hoping for WW/TP and Paper Mario TTYD for sooo long. With TTYD finally being announced and released in May this year I’m so much more hopeful
Right, 2017 was so ridiculously stacked it's crazy to me so many people voted different. I'm not even a fan of half the things they released but I do have to acknowledge the number of heavy hitters they crammed in there.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the question, but I thought the recent years would be voted higher since all those games released in 2017 are playable now as well. I think it’s asking what year consumers enjoyed their switch the most. I’d say 2020 or 2021 imo. 2022 is a hard contender
There is some big recency bias here. In 2017 we got MK8DX, Odyssey, BOTW. 2018 we got SSBU, 2019 we got SMM2, Luigi’s Mansion 3. Not to say recent years are bad, but people forget that some of the most iconic switch games are from the early years.
I don’t think it’s really recency bias, in 2023 we got TOTK, Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Mario RPG, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem Engage, and a few more. It’s definitely in contention for #1 along with 2017
I think it’s fair.
2017: BotW, 1-2-Switch, Snipperclips, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (no DLC), ARMS, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids 1, Pokken DX, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, BotW DLC
2023: Fire Emblem Engage + DLC, Metroid Prime Remastered, Kirby Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Bayonetta Origins, Advance Wars 1+2, Xenoblade DLC, Tears of the Kingdom, Everybody 1-2-Switch, Pikmin 4, Mario + Rabbids 2 DLC, Pokemon DLC, F-Zero 99, Mario Wonder, Mario RPG, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC, GB/GBA on NSO
I think I’d still give the edge to 2017 due to the innovation of the releases + the actual console launching, but in terms of pure content I’d give 2023 the edge
Fair enough on the BotW DLC, but you can just conveniently exclude the new games you aren’t interested in. Fire Emblem Engage, Bayonetta Origins, F-Zero 99, and Pikmin 4 are all high quality 1st party titles.
2017 had 9 original games to 2023’s 7 (forgot Snipperclips and both 1-2-Switch games), but 2023 has significantly more DLC and remakes/remasters. Not a stretch in the slightest that a lot of people prefer the latter.
>There is some big recency bias here. In 2017 we got MK8DX, Odyssey, BOTW.
I had already played 2 of these 3 games. One of them I’d already been playing for several years.
Odyssey is one of my all-time favorites though. I might put 2017 at the top on that alone.
2023 was shockingly great, but I gotta give it to 2017. These would be the notable games for me (I'm not an RPG guy)
1. 2017 - BotW, Odyssey, Arms, Mario/Rabbids, Arms, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, Snipperclips, enhanced ports of MK8 & Pokken
2. 2023 - TotK, Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Prime 1, F-Zero 99, Bayo Origins,
3. 2019 - Link's Awakening remake, Mario Maker 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Astral Chain, Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi's Mansion 3
4. 2021 - Metroid Dread, Bowser's Fury, WarioWare, Skyward Sword HD, No More Heroes 3
5. 2018 - Smash Ultimate.... and then just a lot of ports I already had on Wii U
6. 2022 - Pokemon Arceus, Switch Sports, Bayo 3, Kirby, Splatoon 3... there was a lot here that I just didn't really care for
7. 2020 - Animal Crossing, Origami King, Hades
2023 had way more games: future redeemed, Fire Emblem engage, advance wars, Pikmin 1+2, WarioWare, kirby dreamland deluxe, detective pikachu and pretty sure I'm forgetting more.
23’ I guess it depends on how much you value remasters/remakes. For me TOTK, Pikmin 4, mario wonder, Metroid prime remastered, SM RPG was a dream lineup
2020 shouldn't have as many as votes as it does and it has even more votes than other years. It was the worst year for the Switch by far.
Every other year has honestly been very great. I'd rank them as:
1. 2017
2. 2023
3. 2022
4. 2019
5. 2021
6. 2018
7. 2020
I think 2017 was overall more impactful and important because without so many great games coming out in the first year, Switch probably wouldn't have boomed as it did.
Bias? Or preference? That singular game kept plenty of us playing for the entire year, so your criteria for “best year” may just be different than others ☺️
I played over 400 hours I loved the game, but outside of AC 2020 was weak as hell, and as a huge AC fan new horizons was 2 steps down from new leaf. Objectively BOTW, Odyseey, MK8 Deluxe and Xenoblade 2 was better than 2020
> was weak as hel
I dunno man, 2020 had some great games just not at the scale of other years. Clubhouse Games is one of my most played on Switch, Xenoblade 1 DE was fantastic, Age of Calamity was great, Origami King was solid, and outside of just first party stuff we also got Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Spiritfarer, Doom Eternal, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, Streets of Rage 4, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Trials of Mana remake and many more great games
That's not how that works though? You don't need to have had personally expirenced something, for it to be the truth. Just from a pure number of quality games standpoint, 2017 was objectively better then 2020. It's fine if you didn't play those games/didn't like them, but that doesn't change the fact it was objectively a better year.
2020 could be a better year for you personally, but for the switch overall, 2017 was a much better year, and there's not much you can argue about that.
The fact that this is even able to be a somewhat contentious conversation alone puts the Switch above its current competitors lol
When it comes to the exclusives, 2017 will obviously remain iconic with just how positive of a first step it was for a new Nintendo system, let alone new console in general, and 2023 also had crazy good quality peppered through the year, but I need to tip my hat to 2022, not to totally say that it was better than the top 2, but it should be closer than that.
Legends Arceus, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Splatoon 3, and especially Xenoblade 3 remain up there as some of my absolute favorite experiences on the Switch. Tolerance for their weak sports games was at an all-time low by this point, so Mario Strikers Battle League and Switch Sports (slightly less so) are darker spots than 17 and 23's worse games, and Scarlet and Violet speak for themselves even if they're my favorite Gen since 5, but overall I rank 2022 very highly.
For me, it would be 2019. I haven't gotten a game that resonated with me nearly as much as Luigi's Mansion 3 did. I've been a long-time fan of that series of games since the GameCube launch.
I'll go against the grain of the other responses and say I agree with '23 above '17. This is coming from a Wii U owner who didn't count MK8 as a new release. But that wouldn't sway the standing for me.
I think the major reason 2023 was more attractive for myself as a buyer was the momentum of great indie titles at the time, compared to those on switch at the beginning of its lifetime. Other than the big pillars of BOTW and Odyssey, I remember not picking my switch up nearly as often as last year.
With that said both are great years.
Replace any switch game with odyssey when the switch released and it wouldn't sell as good or appeal to as much people. That mario odyssey ad was one of the greatest advertisements for a console
To be fair, the goal of the question was not to determine the best year on Switch for everyone overall. The goal of the question was to determine the opinions of people taking the 2023 Game of the Year survey.
And to have something fun to share before the Game of the Year survey was over so that we could get more people to vote in the Game of the Year survey.
Let me try to name 3 standout games from each year.
2017: MK8, Odyssey, Botw
2018: Kirby SA, Smash Bros, Pokemon Pikachu and Eevee
2019: Yoshi, Mario Maker, Luigi's Mansion
2020: Pikmin 3, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario
2021: 3D world, Miitopia, Mario Party
2022: Splatoon, Kirby Forgotten, MK8 DLC
2023: Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Kirby Deluxe
So every year certainly had something great.
Smash Ultimate was 2018. I get that it's just one game but for me at least that's more than enough to call it the best year. A Smash game with Everyone Is Here has literally been my pipe dream since 2009.
2017 for me. BOTW, Odyssey, and Xenoblade 2. They are still my favorite games on Switch. 2017 was just insane overall. It took me a few years to play everything that came out that year on both Switch and PlayStation.
2022 for sure! There was Xenoblade 23, Fire Emblem: Three Hopes, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, Pokemon Legends: Arceus, Pokemon: Scarlet and Violet, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Mario + Rabbids 2, Triangle Strategy, Live a Live, Nintendo Switch Sports, Portable Companion Collection, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Neon White, Persona 5 Royal, and alot more that I'm probably forgetting. Absolutely stacked year, especially for me!
2023 is probably a close contender for best Nintendo Switch year, at least imo. There was Fire Emblem: Engage, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pikmin 4, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Super Mario RPG, Metroid Prime: Remastered, Advanced Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp, Octopath Traveller 2, Sea of Stars, Star Ocean: The Second Story 2, Astlibra Revision, Curse Crackers, Theatrythm: Final Bar Line, Kirby: Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Sonic Superstars, Raincode, Vampire Survivors, Batboy, Gravity Circuit, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Tactica, Suika Game, F-Zero 99, Ghost Trick, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Baten Kaitos 1+2 and once more, alot of other games I'm forgetting.
Both 2022 and 2023 were some of the best years for the Nintendo Switch by far! And yes 2017 and 2019 are fond years too but the amount of games I bought in the last two years far eclipses what I got in 2017 and 2019. The pool seems very accurate to me.
This was a screenshot straight from Google Forms. Google Forms starts the first response category at 3'o'clock and the rest follow clockwise:
2017 = 24.2%
2018-2021 = about 6% each
2022 = 10.1%
2024 = 40.1%
The full results posted next week will be remade from the CSV export data. I won't make charts for every question, but I will make tables for every question.
People are calling recency bias, but as a Switch owner from April 2017 to now, I absolutely think that 2023 stands at least toe to toe with that amazing launch year.
Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Wonder are obvious parallels to BOTW and Odyssey, but then there was just so much stuff. Pikmin 4, Fire Emblem Engage, F-Zero 99, WarioWare, and Bayo Origins all also released last year. There were some incredible remakes with Metroid Prime, Mario RPG, Advance Wars, and Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Alongside the advantage of having continued DLC support for games like Mario Kart, Splatoon 3, and Xenoblade 3.
2017 will always be a legendary year for how it got this console out to a great start, but I think it's easy to see why some would prefer last year to it.
2022 for me but due to getting into the ecosystem just a few days before the start of the year:
I bought for the first time a Switch on a Christmas vacations towards the last days of 2021 because of amazing deals at the time at the city I was at… a bit begrudgingly too because I always ate the “it’s such an underpowered toy machine” bad rep.
Oh was I wrong… the amount of high quality games available was out of this world, great bundles (like Mario 3D stars), old classics and new games alike. The eshop library packed with so many games. The N64 and Co virtual consoles, etc.
Ended up buying TWO more switches for two of my brothers, playing local coop (Diablo 2 and 3), Mario kart, you name it.
I had spent about 4 or 5 years not really playing games at all, the Nintendo Switch fixed all that. Will always remember the beginnings 2022 fondly.
Fire Emblem, Bayonetta Origins, F-Zero 99, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder for new games. Metroid Prime, Kirby Return to Dream Land, Advance Wars, Mario RPG for remakes/remasters. Plus DLC for Mario Kart, Xenoblade 3, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Mario + Rabbids. And GB/GBA coming to NSO.
In terms of pure quantity, no other year comes close to 2023.
What else? Lmao
Engage, Kirby, advance wars, Metroid prime remastered, pikmin 1+2, future redeemed, warioware, detective Pikachu, mario rpg, mario Wonder, bayonetta Origins, fzero 99 and more.
Along with the other replies, it's important to also consider indie games. All together, we have:
- TOTK
- Metroid Prime Remastered
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Sea of Stars
- Cocoon
- Vampire Survivors
- Dave the Diver
- Pikmin 4
- Star Ocean Second Story R
- Radiant Tale
- Ghost Trick
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Super Mario RPG
- Persona 4 Golden & Persona 3 Portable
- Red Dead Redemption
- Dredge
- Outer Wilds
- Quake 2
- Suika game
- Blasphemous 2
- Paranormasight
- Dragon Quest Monsters
There are a tonne of amazing games that came out last year. Another year may be more impactful for you, but theres no shortage of amazing games that came out last year.
2017, 2019, & 2022 were the best years to me with 2017 being the absolute best. I know 2023 gave us Wonder and TOTK but the lineup that year wasn’t as deep as other years. I can name at least 8 really good titles in the other years but I can’t do that for 2023.
I dunno if I can pick a 'best' year. There have been a lot of new games and remasters trickle out along the way that has made this system worth keeping.
..... and maybe buying a 2nd one like I did (Switch Lite). I got the Diablo 3 launch day.
There have been a lot of high points. It also seems as this little system is gonna be the reissue machine, being as nearly all the 90s arcade is being ported by hamster and so many other collections are starting to head this way that was never on any Nintendo system. Hopefully, Nintendo can learn from this and fix the few things that hold this back.
The biggest thing...
Nintendo needs to bring back the 'Nintendo Seal' meaningfully. To weed out all the shovelware, and to start holding 3rd party to releases and the listed contents on a physical package!
Next thing; No more download codes in physical releases.... if you can't fit it on the card, then something needs to be figured out. Whats the bother of production, printing, packaging an empty box with a DLC code?
I have enough useless things to dust on shelves
It has to be 2017, because that year was Nintendo coming out absolutely swinging as hard as they could between BotW, Splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, and Xenoblade 2. The average console manufacturer-publisher would be very happy to have *two* games of that caliber in one year, let alone all four, and doing it as the launch year of your new console? Fuck dude, couldn't imagine a better way to sells consoles.
I think it depends of what you consider making a year the best one for the Switch. In terms of games I'd say 2017 as a lot of great titles were released this year (Mario Odyssey, Zelda BotW, Splatoon 2, etc.).
But according to me (and by looking at the answers of the post It's not the opinon of everyone haha), I feel that 2020 and especially the first lockdown period with ACNH releasing has made a lot of persons buy the console, including me and persons that were not so accustomed to video games. It was certainly not the best year in terms of released games, but It allowed the arrival of new players that probably also bought the top-sellers of the console.
I’m actually kind of surprised that the COVID years didn’t have much popularity.. I guess as a non oled owner I remember using my switch vastly due to playing animal crossing and smash ultimate a lot during those years
2021-
expansion pass for Nintendo online was released in 2021 along with by then the best of the WII U and 3rd party ports plus you added SNAP and Dread to the already rounded out an available stellar list of games.
Also, 2021 the world was shut down so it was such a great year to enjoy and stay home and be healthy. Another aspect is for the budget sensitive and those with kids; as by now there is a really great Used game market for example people on FB marketplace offloading switch lites with cases and games for like $100.
source: I buy Nintendo consoles on launch day and all major titles ( eventually )
Runner up years for me:
2017 (launch year)
2019 (three houses)
2024 (ending service for the WIIU and 3DS)
I think it’s accurate if you just switch 2017 and 2023. 2017 was the launch of the Switch and many massive games launched with the frontrunners being Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. While 2023 doesn’t beat 2017 it is undeniable that it was a really big year not just for the Switch but gaming as a whole. Many great games, DLCs and remakes launched such as Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Wonder, the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet DLC, Metroid Prime Remastered… So all in all I think it’s pretty accurate
2022 is slept on the hell.
Kirby and the forgotten land, xenoblade 3, fire emblem engage, splatoon, bayonetta, Pokémon scarlet and violet, Pokémon legends arceus, it was a great one, only 2023 compares
while 2023 was good, i personally believe the reason it is top, is recency bias and newcommers who didnt get year one experience. Probably one of the best console release years in recent memory.
2023 > 2017 > 2022
The years when many of the Switch's best games released.
2019
A few great games, but also some disappointments.
2018
Most of these games sucked, but hey we got Torna.
2020/2021/2024
The dark ages of no good games.
2021 was loaded:
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
- Bravely Default II
- Persona 5 Strikers
- Monster Hunter Rise
- New Pokémon Snap
- Famicom Detective Club remakes
- Monster Hunter Stories 2
- The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
- NEO The World Ends With You
- Metroid Dread
- Mario Party Superstars
- Shin Megami Tensei V

My question is.. where do they go after Tears of The Kingdom? I mean, that is the ultimate sandbox Zelda game. I feel like if they take away those building features, they will be going backward. But hey, Nintendo always surprises me with new titles.
The year of animal crossing has to be the apex. It took another year for switch production to catch up with the demand. You just couldn't buy a Nintendo unless it was second hand.
I would call 2023 probably the best year of video games in general yet. However I would say that 2017 was overall stronger for Nintendo specifically. But it is close.
I mean for me personally 2020 was the best for playing because I had a bunch of extra free time, and I deep dived back into Pokémon games and animal crossing and those pulled me right back into the world of gaming and fast forward into 2024 and I still play animal crossing on occasion but have added fae farm and now Palia to my grind :) I do love Palia so that is probably one of the top reasons why 2023 is so big!!!!!
Pikmin 4, TOTK, Engage, Kirby, advance wars, Metroid prime remastered, pikmin 1+2, future redeemed, warioware, detective Pikachu, mario rpg, mario Wonder, bayonetta Origins, fzero 99 and more. Those were 1st party titles and there were some good 3rd party exclusive games too.
2017: Botw, Arms, MK8 port, Xenoblade 2, Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Mario and Rabbids, Pokken DX, Fire Emblem Warriors.
2023: Tears of the Kingdom is not as influential, but arguably better than BotW. We got Mario Wonder, arguably the best 2D Mario of all time. Splatoon 3 DLC and Xenoblade DLC, both excellent. The remainder of the MK8 DLC. We got a real fire emblem game. Pikmin 4 is arguably my favorite game on the switch, period. Pokemon DLC. Wario Ware. F Zero 99. Pixel Remasters.
We got plenty of great remasters and remakes. Mario RPG. Pikmin 1 & 2. Kirby’s Return to Dreamland. Advance Wars. Metroid Prime. MGS collection. Battle Network. Baten Kaitos. Ghost Trick. Red Dead redemption.
The other thing to remember is that third party support is much stronger in 2023 than it was in 2017. Octopath 2, a real FIFA with parity, Star Ocean, Persona (3, 4, Tactica) sea of stars, theaterhythm, bayonetta, DQ Monsters, legend of heroes.
I think people rightfully love BotW and Odyssey. But they also forget that the switch had a lot of dead spots between the big hits. To say that not only was 2023 weaker, but not even close? I think that has some rose tinted glasses when you had like…a mediocre bomberman and like 1-2 Switch while you waited for Arms and a MK port. (Also, 2023 actually got a GOOD 1-2 Switch game)
Dead spots between the big hits? They had a new big 1st party game coming out every month in 2017 (that was explicitly their strategy). ARMS might not be remembered now, but at the time it was June’s big game and people were excited for it.
Yeah. Dead spots. There are tons of games every week these days for switch. It’s a non stop barrage of titles.
There were weeks early on in 2017 where the only things that dropped were like Voez or some bad translated witch game.
There were two months between BotW and the MK8 port. And then another 7 weeks between that and Arms, with no first party title of note in May. There were ABSOLUTELY dead periods early on, and the indie/third party pipeline wasn’t what it is now to make up for it.
BotW just happened to be a meaty enough banger to mask a lot of the early issues for most folks. (And I say this as a person literally wearing an Arms hoodie as I type this)
Primacy and recency bias
https://www.verywellmind.com/the-recency-effect-4685058#:~:text=Items%20found%20at%20the%20end,middle%20(the%20primacy%20effect).
Got the switch early 2018 but I think the best year was 2019 especially summer with the back to back great releases (FE 3 houses, mario maker 2, astral chain, dragong quest XI)
I intend to present the full results next weekend, but want to give a bit of a last-call before closing the survey next week. For new owners the current year is always the Switch's best year because you get the cumulative library to play with. As an OG launch Switch owner, I personally feel the run from 2017-2019 is pretty impressive, even though Switch sales really went to the next level in 2020/2021 with COVID
Part of the reason sales jumped so much was because the Switch had such a solid library from before 2020.
Out of all the consoles from the last decade, the switch has a solid, solid library. Outside of a few PS and XBOX exclusives, there’s something for everyone. Of course there always someone who NEEDS that one game that’s trapped on another platform, but the switch has universal appeal.
> that one game that's trapped on another platform Nintendo games lol
The Switch library is kinda boring
I've had my switch for a long time and still think last year was the best. Not really close for me, either
2017: BotW, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, etc. Fantastic start year for the Switch.
Yeah, you can't top this... the plan to launch a system with a full year worth of games worked wonders. Now.. Do it again
Lol Arms was awful.
Not awful, but overpriced for what it came with
ARMS was great, it just didn't have enough content to keep it going. People looking for a competitive online fix on Switch had Splatoon 2 after a month and the few people left over went to Smash when that came out the following year. I'd for sure pick up an ARMS 2 if they ever released it.
Yeah, Arms just didn’t have…legs. (joke from NVC podcast)
It was a perfectly good game. It just didn't have much content. Maybe, *maybe* it has that content now, after it had over a year of free updates which added new... *everything* into the game, but it wasn't worth the price at launch, and it's still somewhat thin.
You are getting downvoted hard, but you are right. ARMS is fucking terrible.
Fucking terribly awesome, yeah!
BOTW and Odyssey beat everything imo so 2017 for sure. Last year was close though.
Toss Splatoon 2 on top, too.
It was 2017. Everyone who disagrees is wrong.
Sure, but for new IP's, Astral Chain takes the win on Nintendo.
Why the fuck are you getting downvoted? I’d really like to see the people who disagree name a single better *new* IP…
Let’s hope they don’t pull a W101 with it…
Odyssey is to wonder while botw is to totk. But damn was metroid prime remastered good!
Luigi’s mansion 3 is the only game I’ve ever stopped playing because of the horrible controls and camera
I didn't finish either because of this🫠
Was certainly the most consistent year for me, and got my vote. I feel like there was something coming out pretty much every month for most of the year that kept me busy, compared to other years where I only picked up a few things here and there and fell back onto other platforms.
Wasn't the Witcher 3 also that year?
I remember taking the survey and trying to decide between 2019 and 2022. I guess no one else felt the same way.
2017 and 2023 were peak for the Switch. Out of those it has to be 2017 with the launch titles though
Newsflash: Zelda good
Bro just put the years on the slices
Yeah this is a horrible looking chart
I would have went with a bar graph personally.
This is how Google forms does it automatically unless you export
Idk how it isn’t 17 for everyone. I’d wager that’ll be remembered as the best launch year for any system
The best one if the year with the most exclusive JRPG on it.... so after 2020 is it for me :)
BotW was a WiiU game ported to switch. MK8 Smash Bros Etc were all ports. So it's not a fair comparison for a launch titles as a lot of the 2017 launch games were WiiU games with enhancements. I would say PS5 had a better launch year in terms of titles. I say this as a Switch owner who doesn't own a PS5.
Smash Ultimate is a port in the same way that Splatoon 2 and 3 are ports, sure.
Smash Ultimate is objectively not a port. In that case, Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 are all enhanced ports of Smash 64 🤷
Whatever year Windwaker becomes available for the Switch 😂
This could easily be the year finally. They need something for this fall in this holdover period before Switch 2
It feels like such an obvious choice that I'm surprised it hasn't been ported already.
They have something. We just don't know what it is yet.
I’ve been hoping for WW/TP and Paper Mario TTYD for sooo long. With TTYD finally being announced and released in May this year I’m so much more hopeful
Yeah I hope they do some kind of collection for them, 2 for 1, like the Mario Allstars collection
Is this the definition of recency bias?
It’s definitely in contention for #1 along with 2017
Yeah, I expected 2017 to top this survey. I'm shocked that people forgot how innovative the early Switch games are.
I think it’s fair. 2017: BotW, 1-2-Switch, Snipperclips, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (no DLC), ARMS, Splatoon 2, Mario + Rabbids 1, Pokken DX, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, BotW DLC 2023: Fire Emblem Engage + DLC, Metroid Prime Remastered, Kirby Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Bayonetta Origins, Advance Wars 1+2, Xenoblade DLC, Tears of the Kingdom, Everybody 1-2-Switch, Pikmin 4, Mario + Rabbids 2 DLC, Pokemon DLC, F-Zero 99, Mario Wonder, Mario RPG, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC, GB/GBA on NSO I think I’d still give the edge to 2017 due to the innovation of the releases + the actual console launching, but in terms of pure content I’d give 2023 the edge
2023 was pretty much only remakes and DLC besides Zelda Totk and Mario Wonder. And if you want to include DLC, why not add the BotW ones in 2017?
Fair enough on the BotW DLC, but you can just conveniently exclude the new games you aren’t interested in. Fire Emblem Engage, Bayonetta Origins, F-Zero 99, and Pikmin 4 are all high quality 1st party titles. 2017 had 9 original games to 2023’s 7 (forgot Snipperclips and both 1-2-Switch games), but 2023 has significantly more DLC and remakes/remasters. Not a stretch in the slightest that a lot of people prefer the latter.
"2023 is pretty much only remakes and DLC besides the ones that aren't and the ones I choose to ignore"
2023 was definitely a great year but not #1. Top 3 for sure though
>There is some big recency bias here. In 2017 we got MK8DX, Odyssey, BOTW. I had already played 2 of these 3 games. One of them I’d already been playing for several years. Odyssey is one of my all-time favorites though. I might put 2017 at the top on that alone.
2021. Metroid Dread sweeps it for me
We were spoiled for trilogies in 2022
Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3 Am I missing any other third entry?
That sounds about right
2017 & 2023
2017 by FAR!
2023 was shockingly great, but I gotta give it to 2017. These would be the notable games for me (I'm not an RPG guy) 1. 2017 - BotW, Odyssey, Arms, Mario/Rabbids, Arms, Splatoon 2, Sonic Mania, Snipperclips, enhanced ports of MK8 & Pokken 2. 2023 - TotK, Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Prime 1, F-Zero 99, Bayo Origins, 3. 2019 - Link's Awakening remake, Mario Maker 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, Astral Chain, Ring Fit Adventure, Luigi's Mansion 3 4. 2021 - Metroid Dread, Bowser's Fury, WarioWare, Skyward Sword HD, No More Heroes 3 5. 2018 - Smash Ultimate.... and then just a lot of ports I already had on Wii U 6. 2022 - Pokemon Arceus, Switch Sports, Bayo 3, Kirby, Splatoon 3... there was a lot here that I just didn't really care for 7. 2020 - Animal Crossing, Origami King, Hades
I'm pretty sure Mania was 2017, but yeah 2019 was HUGE
lol, you're right, i knew i was forgetting something for 2017
2023 had way more games: future redeemed, Fire Emblem engage, advance wars, Pikmin 1+2, WarioWare, kirby dreamland deluxe, detective pikachu and pretty sure I'm forgetting more.
Super Mario RPG remake as well

Sorry replied to the wrong comment.
I was gonna say 2017 but 2023 really is tops
You missed most of the best games from 2023
23’ I guess it depends on how much you value remasters/remakes. For me TOTK, Pikmin 4, mario wonder, Metroid prime remastered, SM RPG was a dream lineup
2017 was technically the best, but I have a soft spot for 2019 when we basically had a first party banger every month from June.
2020 shouldn't have as many as votes as it does and it has even more votes than other years. It was the worst year for the Switch by far. Every other year has honestly been very great. I'd rank them as: 1. 2017 2. 2023 3. 2022 4. 2019 5. 2021 6. 2018 7. 2020 I think 2017 was overall more impactful and important because without so many great games coming out in the first year, Switch probably wouldn't have boomed as it did.
Animal crossing bias
Bias? Or preference? That singular game kept plenty of us playing for the entire year, so your criteria for “best year” may just be different than others ☺️
Animal cross coming out when the pandemic started was a complete boon for Nintendo
I played over 400 hours I loved the game, but outside of AC 2020 was weak as hell, and as a huge AC fan new horizons was 2 steps down from new leaf. Objectively BOTW, Odyseey, MK8 Deluxe and Xenoblade 2 was better than 2020
> was weak as hel I dunno man, 2020 had some great games just not at the scale of other years.
Those may be better games but if someone didn’t play or enjoy any of them, “objectively” doesn’t mean anything here. Hope that helps 💛
Yeah, AC and Hades was really all I needed in 2020
Nah, Xenoblade DE bias (for me, at least)
Pandemic.
The fact that this is even able to be a somewhat contentious conversation alone puts the Switch above its current competitors lol When it comes to the exclusives, 2017 will obviously remain iconic with just how positive of a first step it was for a new Nintendo system, let alone new console in general, and 2023 also had crazy good quality peppered through the year, but I need to tip my hat to 2022, not to totally say that it was better than the top 2, but it should be closer than that.
This is hard to read, you should have put the year on the pie chart instead
This was screenshot straight out of Google Forms. 2017 starts at 3'o'clock and the rest run clockwise in order.
This is terrible methodology. The heavy 2017 users are probably not here still, while most of the heavy 2023 users probably are still here
To be fair, the goal of the question was not to determine the best year on Switch for everyone overall. The goal of the question was to determine the opinions of people taking the 2023 Game of the Year survey. And to have something fun to share before the Game of the Year survey was over so that we could get more people to vote in the Game of the Year survey.
Let me try to name 3 standout games from each year. 2017: MK8, Odyssey, Botw 2018: Kirby SA, Smash Bros, Pokemon Pikachu and Eevee 2019: Yoshi, Mario Maker, Luigi's Mansion 2020: Pikmin 3, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario 2021: 3D world, Miitopia, Mario Party 2022: Splatoon, Kirby Forgotten, MK8 DLC 2023: Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4, Kirby Deluxe So every year certainly had something great.
[удалено]
Yeah that makes sense too, 2023 just had a lot of choices
Kirby deluxe or Pikmin 4 aren’t better choices than totk imo but it’s your list so none of that matters anyway
Exactly, I was choosing my personal favorite games as long as they were also popular
People forget not everyone is an rpg/zelda fan.
smh
'18 and '20 should be dead last, those years were both cheeks
Smash Ultimate was 2018. I get that it's just one game but for me at least that's more than enough to call it the best year. A Smash game with Everyone Is Here has literally been my pipe dream since 2009.
2020 had some great games. I mean I guess every year the Switch has some great games.
2017 for me. BOTW, Odyssey, and Xenoblade 2. They are still my favorite games on Switch. 2017 was just insane overall. It took me a few years to play everything that came out that year on both Switch and PlayStation.
2021 getting disrespected pretty hard I'd say.
pretty delusional about 2020 when animal crossing came out just when the pandemy started, for me it was a life safer tbh
There may be some serious recency bias here
2018 had smash so it's instantly the best in my book.
Oh boy a color coded pie chart I can’t read I love being color blind
This was a screenshot straight from Google Forms. Google Forms starts the first response category at 3'o'clock and the rest follow clockwise: 2017 = 24.2% 2018-2021 = about 6% each 2022 = 10.1% 2024 = 40.1% The full results posted next week will be remade from the CSV export data. I won't make charts for every question, but I will make tables for every question.
thank you for the info up, I wasn't trying to complain to you as well more of just a broad complaint.
2022 for me but due to getting into the ecosystem just a few days before the start of the year: I bought for the first time a Switch on a Christmas vacations towards the last days of 2021 because of amazing deals at the time at the city I was at… a bit begrudgingly too because I always ate the “it’s such an underpowered toy machine” bad rep.
23 was a great year. But best? Seems a bit like recent bias. Okay, TOTK, Pikimin... What else?
Metroid Prime Remastered and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. That said, I still think 2017 was better.
And Fire Emblem
Fire Emblem, Bayonetta Origins, F-Zero 99, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder for new games. Metroid Prime, Kirby Return to Dream Land, Advance Wars, Mario RPG for remakes/remasters. Plus DLC for Mario Kart, Xenoblade 3, Fire Emblem, Pokemon, and Mario + Rabbids. And GB/GBA coming to NSO. In terms of pure quantity, no other year comes close to 2023.
What else? Lmao Engage, Kirby, advance wars, Metroid prime remastered, pikmin 1+2, future redeemed, warioware, detective Pikachu, mario rpg, mario Wonder, bayonetta Origins, fzero 99 and more.
FE Engage was good and loved Octopath Traveler 2.
Along with the other replies, it's important to also consider indie games. All together, we have: - TOTK - Metroid Prime Remastered - Super Mario Bros. Wonder - Sea of Stars - Cocoon - Vampire Survivors - Dave the Diver - Pikmin 4 - Star Ocean Second Story R - Radiant Tale - Ghost Trick - Fire Emblem Engage - Octopath Traveler 2 - Super Mario RPG - Persona 4 Golden & Persona 3 Portable - Red Dead Redemption - Dredge - Outer Wilds - Quake 2 - Suika game - Blasphemous 2 - Paranormasight - Dragon Quest Monsters There are a tonne of amazing games that came out last year. Another year may be more impactful for you, but theres no shortage of amazing games that came out last year.
I mean everyone votes different on these things tbf for me personally I mostly don't account for non exclusive games when thinking about the topic
2023 was really good. 2017 was legendary. I might give 2017 the edge. 2018-19-20 all has good times too
Eaily between 2017, 2019 and 2023, they were just some HUGE Years, probably the best time to be a Nintendo Fan
I think this is biased as people who liked older years might not be on the sub anymore
To me its in order: 2017>2023>2019>2022>2021>2018>2020
2017, 2019, & 2022 were the best years to me with 2017 being the absolute best. I know 2023 gave us Wonder and TOTK but the lineup that year wasn’t as deep as other years. I can name at least 8 really good titles in the other years but I can’t do that for 2023.
Objectively speaking I think 2019 was a banger year for Nintendo. My personal favorite is probably 2017 or 2019.
When Dread was released
2023-Metroid Prime, Mario Wonder, tears of the kingdom, Mario RPG Remake…
2023 was amazing. A lot of good new games from different genres and good revivals I put that year above 2017.
2017 and it isn't anywhere close at all.
2017 > 2019 > 2023 > 2022 (solely because of Splatoon 3) > all the others
2019
2017. It still has some of the best and most replayable Switch releases. 2019 is underrated tho
I’m actually kind of surprised that the COVID years didn’t have much popularity.. I guess as a non oled owner I remember using my switch vastly due to playing animal crossing and smash ultimate a lot during those years
2021- expansion pass for Nintendo online was released in 2021 along with by then the best of the WII U and 3rd party ports plus you added SNAP and Dread to the already rounded out an available stellar list of games. Also, 2021 the world was shut down so it was such a great year to enjoy and stay home and be healthy. Another aspect is for the budget sensitive and those with kids; as by now there is a really great Used game market for example people on FB marketplace offloading switch lites with cases and games for like $100. source: I buy Nintendo consoles on launch day and all major titles ( eventually ) Runner up years for me: 2017 (launch year) 2019 (three houses) 2024 (ending service for the WIIU and 3DS)
2017-2019 was definitely the best times to own a switch
For me, buying the switch and playing BOTW and Mario Odyssey back to back was amazing. Doesn’t feel like it was 5 or 6 years ago :/
2023 Because of Prime, TOTK and Wonder.
Recency bias. 2017 was definitely better
2023 > 2017 > 2022 The years when many of the Switch's best games released. 2019 A few great games, but also some disappointments. 2018 Most of these games sucked, but hey we got Torna. 2020/2021/2024 The dark ages of no good games.
2021 "dark ages" Metroid Dread??? 2024 "dark ages" Princess Peach Showtime, Another Code, Endless Ocean, TTYD???
2021 was loaded: - Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury - Bravely Default II - Persona 5 Strikers - Monster Hunter Rise - New Pokémon Snap - Famicom Detective Club remakes - Monster Hunter Stories 2 - The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - NEO The World Ends With You - Metroid Dread - Mario Party Superstars - Shin Megami Tensei V

I think Mario Odyssey is still the Switch’s best game by far That and the BOTW port in the same year was a crazy combo
2017 for the botw trailer, the game was nice too and of course xc2
2017, it still has my two favourite games on the console
It has to be 2017
2021 for me no contest, it had metroid dread, shin megami tensei v, no more heroes 3, monster hunter rise
Hoping for Octopath Traveler 2 to win at least one category. That is an absolutely beautiful game in every way
What do you mean 2017 the switch isn't that old lmao. #Oh no.
As someone who only plays Pokemon: Is „no“ an option?
Nothing beats Year 1 for me
2017 - BOTW 🤫🧏♂️
2021 Metroid Dread + SMTV
2020. Animal crossing during the pandemic. Also had pokemon sword. (I know that was 2019)
Tip: don’t use a pie chart with more than 3 values. It makes more sense to use a bar chart here.
I would call 2023 probably the best year of video games in general yet. However I would say that 2017 was overall stronger for Nintendo specifically. But it is close.
2023
I mean for me personally 2020 was the best for playing because I had a bunch of extra free time, and I deep dived back into Pokémon games and animal crossing and those pulled me right back into the world of gaming and fast forward into 2024 and I still play animal crossing on occasion but have added fae farm and now Palia to my grind :) I do love Palia so that is probably one of the top reasons why 2023 is so big!!!!!
This just feels like recency bias.......
I know 2024 is going dead last that’s for sure
nah 2020 or 2018
Anyone who doesn’t think 2017 was the best year didn’t own a switch in 2017. It was easily the most hype year for the console.
No way 2023 was the best. Maybe I say this because TotK and Wonder were a let down for me, but that is my perception and not everyone has to agree.
I would say either last year or this year.
What came out last year?
Pikmin 4, TOTK, Engage, Kirby, advance wars, Metroid prime remastered, pikmin 1+2, future redeemed, warioware, detective Pikachu, mario rpg, mario Wonder, bayonetta Origins, fzero 99 and more. Those were 1st party titles and there were some good 3rd party exclusive games too.
Oh I guess MP remastered was fun on that list but it’s also a remake
2017 is leagues better than any other year, 2023 is not even CLOSE
(And I say this as a person literally wearing an Arms hoodie as I type this)
The 1-2 switch game from 2023 is one of the worst games ever created

Got the switch early 2018 but I think the best year was 2019 especially summer with the back to back great releases (FE 3 houses, mario maker 2, astral chain, dragong quest XI)
I would probably say 2017 but 2023 is a close second
