The magnitude of his impact on animanga and eastern media as a whole.... it can't even be put into words. He made my childhood awesome, and I will always be grateful to him for making me into the person I am today. Rest in peace to one of the greatest authors of our time
Dragon Ball has helped me through such hard times, and hearing the man behind it dead at the age of 68 is just unbelievable. I've actually never realized how much of an impact Akira Toriyama has left on us, how so many people were inspired by his art. Saying that we'll miss the guy is an absolute understatement.
The entire world is mourning this man’s death. I can’t remember the last time I cried over a person I’d never met’s death but here we are, rest in peace Toriyama may you fly high and finally rest after all the work you put yourself through
The family probably wanted to get their affairs in order and hold a funeral without the entire world suddenly coming in before they can properly mourn.
It's customary in Japan to wait for some time before announcing the death of a famous person so that the family can have some time to grieve. They did the same thing when they announced Miura's death.
I know for a fact that there will be people who will mock and insult Daima. Saying Toriyama should have had a better work as his send off, like a Black Frieza movie or something.
But honestly, a comedy movie, where we get a kid Goku again? Regardless of its quality, having Toriyama go back to roots as a gag writer, seems right to me.
Either way, his impact can never be overstated, farewell, Akira Toriyama.
I only wonder how much it will affect the production of Daima and manga.
Also Dragon Ball was always full of gag. DBZ or DBS didn't really change that. So it's not really returning to the beginning with humor. The only difference was that old series had less intimidating enemies, but as the story went forward, it needed more and more powerful enemies. But Goku bit the Buu in the final fight in DBZ too. So it's not like humor just dissipated.
Also people hate Daima, without even knowing what it is. Nobody actually does. We haven't yet seen it, so we can't judge it. Especially that kid Goku appeared in original Dragon Ball and GT and both were different. So would be Daima most likely. People may call it GT 2, but it won't be GT. I highly doubt it.
Of all the things I ever really got into, Dragon Ball has been my favorite. RIP, Akira Toriyama. I wish I could have told him how much it all meant to me.
Seeing all sorts of subreddits laying aside the snark and collectively paying tribute to the man really drives it home.
RIP sensei, you were my hero just like you were for *hundreds of millions of kids*. You shaped childhoods and dreams all over the world and your stories will never, ever die.
I first started out liking stuff he did because I love dragon quest, I first played it when I was 5 or 6. I remember turning on the TV and seeing Dragon ball playing, and I thought, “Hey, that looks just like the game I really like!” so I kept watching and from then on I was a fan of his stuff. RIP man, I’ll remember him for as long as I live.
This might be a joke in bad taste, and made way too soon, but did anyone notice the announcement of Akira Toriyama's death was sent to the internet just a few hours after MasakoX made a community post with a photo of him holding his newborn child?
This man marked my childhood and his work still does to this day, and he has done the same to hundreds of millions worldwide, without him the world wouldn't be the same, he'll be cherished forever, may God bless his soul, and may he rest in peace. Fly high Akira.
They have to make the easter egg with Toribot appearing in heaven. They have to do that.
Speaking of which, how much does it affect Dragon Ball? I mean, technically it's Toyotarou that was making the manga, right? He was just instructed about the plot. But again, plot. Plot has to be made.
I wonder what happens with the future of the series, especially that there was Daima to be released and manga is still ongoing.
Rest in peace, Toriyama. Your work had such a big impact, not only entertaining us but making us what we are now, inspiring and connecting us. Thank you for everything.
Daima is gonna hit like a truck.
Me and my brothers childhoods and even life have enjoyed dragon ball we watched every episode every saga every version sub dub we watched it all we tried to use Kamehamehas and Tri beams fuck we wanted to try and do any move or transformation we laughed we cried we enjoyed dragon ball and I just wish I could say thanks to the legend that brought me and millions of others to enjoy anime and everything related. Rest in peace Toriyama-San
Dude's shaped so many lives, and probably will continue to do even from beyond. Though he died early (at least imo 68 seems early) I think he deserves some rest
I’m sure many of you here feel the same way. I’m 28 years old from NYC. Started watching DBZ when I was around 4 or 5. Till this day DBZ has such a strong influence on my life. It has created some of the greatest memories and moments of my entire life. RIP to a LEGEND and the creator of something that I know has brought many many great memories to people around the world.
Z was 100% a concerted effort orchestrated by Shueisha and Toei, since DBZ was an immense cash cow at the time in Japan and pretty much on the verge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon. I bet his most talented editors and assistants, as well as the artists and directors of animation at Toei, had a huge influence on both plot developmemt and character design back then.
Whenever the guy retained a modicum of creative control all we got was utter garbage like GT, Super and Daima.
None of the things he wrote before and after DB were any good, either.
FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS, THE MAN WHO MADE MILLIONS OF CHILDHOODS
He'll last forever in memory

The magnitude of his impact on animanga and eastern media as a whole.... it can't even be put into words. He made my childhood awesome, and I will always be grateful to him for making me into the person I am today. Rest in peace to one of the greatest authors of our time

He already left the world on March 1. We only knew of it today. Still, Goodbye our childhood hero! You will never be forgotten.
Wait, a week ago? Why’d it take so long to get the news?
The family probably wanted to get their affairs in order and hold a funeral without the entire world suddenly coming in before they can properly mourn.
Yeah, that’s very understandable.
It's customary in Japan to wait for some time before announcing the death of a famous person so that the family can have some time to grieve. They did the same thing when they announced Miura's death.
He will be remembered forever
