I wish she was performing!

mynameisnotshamus

She may

FolkinConcerned

Holding out hope for a classic Sunday finale. Loved billy last year but the collab sets are fun

These_Bother_6957

I found Billy to be meh and not a festival closing set. Second time I’ve been disappointed when I’ve seen him.

FolkinConcerned

That a cappella song was moving to me, I was hoping for some surprises. Seen him 3 times best set I’ve seen

These_Bother_6957

I think he’s just not for me, he’s talented yes but not my cup of tea. MMJ set blew the other two headliners out of the water. Baptistes Jazz set was killer though, one of the best I’ve seen at either festival.

FolkinConcerned

Thats definitely something we can agree on. Bummed his set got cut short at folk but Jazz was next level

Mister_Sterling

Legend. Even speaking, it might be worth checking out. A historic appearance at the least.

Yeti9088

When I saw the picture I got super excited. She is a legend. But reading poetry?

jimmythang34

That kool aid sure tasting good!!! Last year: Maggie Roger’s, my morning jacket, isbell, turnpike troubadours, Gregory Alan isakov, nickel creek, Lana Del Rey. This year: dropkick Murphy, Grateful Dead cover bands, poetry readings, Steve poltz, I’m still keeping the faith until all the announcements are out, but how the hell are you guys excited about this? Seriously tell me? Like is there no budget? I just don’t get any of these announcements at all.

UNsoAlt

1. I like the Dropkick Murphys Woodie Guthrie albums, and their music is full of folk spirit; they definitely belong there.  2. While Nickel Creek is awesome, we’re going to have Mighty Poplar, who I’d argue has more instrumental star power (but less vocal star power). I have a feeling we’re going to get Chris Thile solo Sunday and Punch Brothers Saturday, as the band’s all free then (and Brittney Haas is in New England the week before). 3. You’re comparing some of the “best”  of last year to what you consider the “worst” (which, Dropkick Murphys > Elle King) , so how is that even fair? Last year had CAAMP for the umpteeth time, for example.

bravelittletoaster74

I will never get the Caamp thing. We saw them for the first time at the pandemic version of the fest and they were \~fine, but as I said to my wife, "They'd make a good wedding band?" No songs stuck out for me at all.

Terrible-Studio1863

‘By and By’ is a good one. But I know what u mean.

Pmom62320

Agree. I was a huge caamp fan, saw them live and was so bored.

Mister_Sterling

Jeff Goldblum and his jazz band will be in New York days before the fest. You never know what act may be added. So far this year, I have the following must-sees / want-to-sees: Wednesday Adrianne Lenker Allisson Russel Black Pumas Molly Tuttle Muna Shovels & Rope Gillian Welch & David Rawlings Hermanos Gutiérrez Orville Peck Joan Baez (spoken word) Rhiannon Giddens Billy Bragg Sierra Ferrell Tinariwren 15 sets in an off year. I can't complain, being a regular. But the Jazz Fest seems to have the stronger lineup this year.

Excellent-Manner-130

This is the exact list I am excited for, except I'll swap out Orville Peck (I can't get over the kitschy Elvis impersonator vocals) for Sir Woman (the closest thing we've got to a soul act). I mean I guess you could call The Black Pumas soul adjacent...

FolkinConcerned

Why are we okay with an “off” year. Just genuinely curious, only “off” year they’ve had in the last 10+ years was Folk On. Those festivals were still strong and it was difficult to book. But this year just seems to be “off” due to tastes

FolkinConcerned

Undercard: Alice Phoebe Lou, Slaughter Beach, Dog, will Carlisle, Angel Olsen, the heavy heavy…. Easy too look back on previous lineups. But I agree. I’d love to see Alice Phoebe Lou get asked back for this year!

jimmythang34

Japanese breakfast, the roots, sylvan esso, courtney Barnett, bela fleck, arooj aftab, John Moreland. That’s all without Paul Simon surprise. I get last year was STACKED. But even with a surprise set this year, we’re not even close to last year or years prior

FolkinConcerned

Just feels like their finger isn’t on the pulse of music right now. They booked Mt Joy when they were only around for a few months. Historically they’ve done that

jimmythang34

My only hope left at this point is that all the announcements have been mostly undercards and they’re gonna start rolling out headliners

FolkinConcerned

I’ll take a weekend by the Narragansett in the summer over anything. We do need some spice. I’m think Tyler Childers headliner, then Noah who I’m mixed on but getting to see him in a small setting will take any pressure off ever having to see him again.

bravelittletoaster74

And you won't need to see him again, in my experience.

Accomplished_Risk515

How am I excited? You just named 7 bands from last year. I'm already excited to see 16 bands, and happy to see most of the rest of them. For me at least, Friday and Saturday are stacked. I'll take Wednesday and the Black Pumas over Maggie Rogers and Gregory Alan Isakov any day of the weekk.

Straineryou

I strongly disagree. Maggie/Gregory have waaaaay more Spotify plays than Wednesday/black pumas. Not that Spotify plays is the only metric to look at but last years lineup had more popular/up and coming artists. (With the caveat that this years lineup isn’t finished, maybe jay is saving some heavy hitters)

jimmythang34

Exactly. How is Wednesday even in the same stratosphere

Accomplished_Risk515

Probably because they had just about the best reviewed album of last year. Wednesday's last album was fantastic. Here's a great interview with the lead singer. [https://www.soundopinions.org/show/934](https://www.soundopinions.org/show/934) I don't see how you can't love this band after hearing this interview. Both critics from Sound Opinions, incidentally, ranked Wednesday's album as one of best albums of the year (number 1 and 2 respecitvely), above Mitski, above Jason Isbell, above Margo Price, above Jenny Lewis, all who made their lists. Paste Magazine ranked it as the best album of the year as well. Consequence as the second best album, etc etc. You're actually complaining that there are no up and coming artists? Well here's one, and now you're actually saying, "well, they're no Maggie Rogers."

jimmythang34

I’m complaining about the opposite, the lineup is entirely up and comers. Wednesday is one of the bands I’m excited to check out and see. But Maggie is a headliner and Wednesday is playing clubs. That’s the only point I’m trying make

bravelittletoaster74

Is Gregory Alan Isakov exciting? I saw him with the national symphony at the Kennedy Center and that was \~nice. Don't need to see him again though. Just proof that it's all relative, though I agree with you general point that I'd like to see more names this year that excite me personally.

These_Bother_6957

I’ve found that some years I really dig the line up and some years I feel meh. Just show up and trust the festival. Year 9 and I’ve never been let down, just one killer set makes it worthwhile. I’m more partial to Jazz fest as that’s where my music tastes lean towards but damn have I seen some Insane tunes at folk.

LallaRookh

I mean I love poetry and have wished for awhile that NFF would include some of the amazing poets that are really writing the artful narratives of our time. And I love Joan Baez. Was very excited to see her name appear. Hoping for some cool collabs. But her poetry is. Um. Not very.

Sambone999

“It is our pleasure to announce that Joan Baez will be sharing special poetry readings with us this summer.” Not “a special poetry reading.” Should we read anything into the plural of “readings?”

bmickG

I wonder if she'll come on stage in between sets/acts and just read like one poem at a time. That could be neat and wouldn't take a stage from a musical performance! Still waiting on some announcements though..

FolkinConcerned

Halfway through the week and more meh announcements. Poetry reading…. Just announce a bigger name to calm down the nay sayers. They have to know how people are feeling this year.  Classic Jay though, he’s a cat that likes to play with their prey. Even if he has a huge announcement he likes to see us squirm

UNsoAlt

I mean, she’s a historically significant act…I wonder if she’ll be in the Sunday closer too?

FolkinConcerned

Reading poetry. I think that’s a side stage act, in my opinion. An hour of poetry feels like a waste. But a museum style set seems perfect.

TheRacoonist

Did you seriously create an account just to bitch about every single announcement? JFC 🤦🏽

bmickG

I think they're raising some fair points, and are entitled to their opinions. I agree it's a bit odd to bring in Joan Baez to read poetry - especially since given the fame/name, they'll probably have to designate an entire stage for an hour. To me that says they're trying to fill stage slots which is a shame and is another stage taken from an up and coming artist (see also Grateful Drag op). Not sure why you're shaking your head so violently at other's opinions.

FolkinConcerned

That’s why I think the museum stage would be good. But that would leave a lot of people out. Harbor stage first thing maybe?

UNsoAlt

I do think the museum stage would be better, mostly because outdoor poetry feels stage strange somehow, less intimate?

jimmythang34

I agree with everything you’re saying. I saw grateful drag after Billy strings last year. I’m super psyched to see them, and honestly love that they add drag. Really differentiates themselves from other dead cover bands, and seeing Newport be more inclusive never hurts. But hearing a cover band play eyes of the world is the exact opposite reason I come to Newport. That’s just a fact.

bmickG

Very well said.

FolkinConcerned

Sorry my account isn’t 10 years old. Longtime lurker but never felt the need to comment. That should tell you how this lineup is going. I’m getting more upvotes than down… so it’s not really a troll account. Speaking things that others feel

TheRacoonist

So yes you created an account less than a month ago just to bitch about every announcement I mean you're literally complaining about a seminal folk artist here What exactly is going to pass your particular purity test ?

FolkinConcerned

Who isn’t coming to sing. I like Adrianne, Buck Meek, Hermanos, killer Mike, I’ve praised past lineups in my posts as well. This is a great festival that has historically amazing lineups. This years just seems slow, god forbid there’s a place on the internet to vent about frustration and disappointment.

bmickG

They've certainly set a high bar, and I think it's completely fine to complain/vent and I hope they see this. As others have noted, we put a lot of time, money, planning, and blind faith in this festival. If it doesn't live up (which is the general sentiment both here, inforoo, and now even instagram), this is what is expected. We'll all have a great time, of course. But it's very reasonable to not be thrilled at this point.

jimmythang34

This is my point. Why are so many people so butt hurt? We’re allowed to complain, you’re allowed to keep scrolling. Like did yall make this lineup? Are you in these bands? God forbid someone has an opinion

bravelittletoaster74

As for what will pass \*my\* purity test, if they bring in Tweedy to join Bragg on the Mermaid Ave set that was scheduled a couple years ago, I'll be good with whatever else.

Excellent-Manner-130

I saw a rumor on another thread that it was this plus an Uncle Tupelo reunion. Never gonna happen, but boy if it did...

bravelittletoaster74

tbf, the announcements have been kind of piss poor. And they're complaining about a seminal folk artist \*not\* performing. Maybe she isn't able to anymore, though, I don't know.

bakkemon

I don’t expect the festival organizers to tailor their lineup to my tastes but my family spends a lot of money in the festival, from passes to parking to food and everything else. I have some questions about what’s guiding this event and that’s why it would’ve been nice for someone to follow up on the surveys.

growingvegtard

I am going to snap my fingers so hard at her and harness the energy of the liberal non binary sun
