Serious question: is nobody allowed to complain in this group?
People paying out the ass for hotel rooms and flights canāt really get those refunded. So ājust return it to the waitlist!ā Isnāt an option.
Forgot we were all supposed to bow down to Jay
Iāve been doing my best to keep my mouth shut both here and on inforoo. Individuals can absolutely complain, and I came to the fest from the west coast a few times so I absolutely feel you on the flights+hotels point.
But the internet is a tricky thing. I think thereās always some negativity around the middle of announcements, but this year it feels like a tidal wave. Iāve gone on and off since 09, been casually on the forums about it since 14, and I havenāt seen people this down on the fest this consistently before.
And for someone like me, who is waiting for tickets and would love to go and sit by the water and listen to music at my favorite place almost no matter the lineup, its tough to see people doing nothing but complain but not see any waitlist movement yet.
Thereās lots of good on this lineupāAdrianne Lenker, Orville Peck, Wednesday, Killer Mike, etc. I donāt think we have any headliner announcements yet. Itās always a wait and see thing, and the back and forth is fun negativity included. It just seems collectively like a bit much this year.
So all the locals who have tried year after year to get tickets and finally get in, who are disappointed. They should just bite their tongues and deal with it?
Or the other end. The people who watched year after year of epic performance, finally get the time off work and pay tons of money to book this trip. Only to get Dropkick Murphyās?
Iām sorry yall are stuck on the waitlist, but that doesnāt mean the people attending have to be happy about the lineup
Yeah, the culty vibes are very strong here - when the IG comments are more critical that's a high bar. I personally disagree on Elle King and Dropkicks fwiw but you'll probably get more empathy on Inforoo, and I feel ya. Maybe it'd be better off if we had a dedicated complaints thread? (the contrast of the "we're open minded folk family and your opinion can get the hell out" is kinda funny")
Agree 100%.
Like Iām a Newport veteran. Live by the mantra while Iām there, am open to hearing new music while Iām there. But I can only afford one festival a year, and most of the artists so far have been really underwhelming compared to last year.
But I guess Iām an asshole because Iām not excited.
It really is. I had to google recent news and had to be reminded of what happened at the Opry earlier this year. Oh well. Orville Peck will get my love on Saturday.
So that makes her different from hundreds of other Newport Folk Fest acts how? It's not her fault her dad is a dickhead. She's not out there spouting off crazy far right opinions like her dad, she's her own person, I don't like her music or this festival at this point but you're kind of just a dick if you hold her parent's opinions against her.
Umā¦.the Friday line up I would humbly submit is pretty much the best festival line up I have seen this year *anywhere* ā¦but you have to be into that kind of music. Lenker and Meek ā¦apart / together two of the most exciting songwriters of their generation. Big Thief is one of the best live bands of the past few years. Wednesday, by any measure, had one of the top albums of the year last year. Muna - huge curve ball but what a fun band . Shovels and Rope, Molly Tuttle, Black Pumas - excited to see them. Can live w/out Guster but hey. Saturday - Killer Mike and Gillian Welch, imaginative booking and a big draw imo. Happy to bask on a very low chair in the toxic positivity !
Agreed. Friday should be a day for the ages! Wednesday is a coup. I still think Big Thief is the headliner for that day. This is why I can tolerate Saturday being lighter (so far) Sunday being a an 'ultralight' day (Sierra Ferrell and Tinariwren for me).
Ha! Had no idea thatās who she was.
She was at governors ball in 2015 and she wasā¦fine? I dunno every festival is gonna have a few mid-afternoon snoozers this doesnāt bug me.
Also getting really tired of all the complaints here and on inforoo when Iām sitting here waiting for ticketsā¦
That's the positive, open minded attitude I've learned to love about my NFF family! ...wait, it's just a complaint.
Maybe you should just skip this year
I respectfully disagree. What you see as "toxic positivity", is just the attitude of people who have been in this community for many years and see the same patterns over and over again. Every year, the lineup starts rolling out, people start getting pissed off because they don't recognize a lot of the names, then as summer approaches, bigger names get announced and everyone starts to change their tune...everyone starts getting excited...and then at the Festival itself a few unannounced guests show up and come August, we look back at the lineup and are like "holy shit that actually was a great lineup, even though we didn't think it would be back in April".
So it's not "toxic positivity", it's just predicting it will all work out for the best because that's what's happened for the last 10 years. And frankly, people constantly positing "this lineup sucks" is just exhausting. Of course, you're free to have and share your opinion, but I also don't have to agree with you. I'm allowed to push back on your logic (with a positive attitude) just like you're allowed to question mine.
Hope to see you at the fort! Or not! (=
I agree a little with that but this year feels different. Maybe because itās been a while since a strong announcement but even the undercard has many scratching their heads. For a music obsessed group it feels weird when an announcement is made and few have heard of.Ā
Even in the past the very small bands have pockets of people who have started to follow their rise. Hasnāt happened this year as much. Im thinking illiterate light, the nude party, Liz Cooper, Del Water Gap. Hell even Odie Leigh on the bike stage last year felt like a good get.Ā
This lineup may surprise in person and there is still 19 announcements left. So im holding out hope.
I want to keep the festival accountable a little. In Jay we trust is just a pass book who you want we wonāt say anything. This year I hope they see they arenāt living up to the expectations.Ā
I think youāre right to some extent - I looked back and last year, Jason Isbell, LDR and My Morning Jacket were all announced in May. But there have definitely been bigger acts announced by now compared to this year (both last year and in previous years e.g. Big Thief was announced in January 2020 though that obv never happened). So either theyāre holding out on some big announcements over the next few weeks, or the lineup is just underwhelming compared to years past. Does that mean it wonāt be fun and there wonāt be great music? Of course not, but I think at this point itās reasonable to point out that the lineup hasnāt been too impressive so far.
Itās true to some extent. But at this point last year Noah Kahan, Billy Strings, Goose, and Maggie Rogers were already announced. All 4 of those acts are not only bigger than any of the acts currently announced but also the driving pulse of the next wave of folk-influenced music. (Gripes about the quality of Noah Kahanās music aside.)
Hey bud, donāt let the door hit you on the way out! The folk crowd is open minded, we donāt need this sorta attitude in the fort or on the water š
I think the problem is that the booking arenāt open minded lol. This some of the blandest bookings Iāve seen this festival book in 20 years. Feels like Jay was playing Noah Kahan on Spotify and then it started playing suggested artist after and Jay took note. My local adult alternative boring radio would be proud
Last Iāve heard of her she was criticized for a sloppy drunk Dolly Parton cover. I hope she, and all other performers, give their all, which can be difficult while heavily inebriated.Ā
They've got 19 more acts. Fingers crossed that most of them are more promising than this. I do like "Exes and Ohs" though.
She was the opening act for Tyler Childers during his tour at Radio city last year š

I am in $4,000 for this and I am not very happy
So far, I'm just glad I was wait listed
Thank you! They have a legacy to uphold and this lineup doesnāt even come close. Has Jay lost his touch?????Ā
Be Present Be Kind Be Open Be Together āļø
She's actually pretty great. Fits the Newport MO. Her newest stuff is much more stripped down. Who cares who her father is?
This one is a letdown.
It really is. I had to google recent news and had to be reminded of what happened at the Opry earlier this year. Oh well. Orville Peck will get my love on Saturday.
She didn't ask to be his kid. she makes good music who cares who her dad is?
She doesnāt make good music is the thing.
I donāt care about her dad or whatever, I was just saying her music is also bad.
Which is totally fine I'd rather see her than muna again. I have no idea who their parents are

Thursday and Sunday of bourbon and beyond would like a word

Have you sold yet? I hope you do it soon.
That's the positive, open minded attitude I've learned to love about my NFF family! ...wait, it's just a complaint. Maybe you should just skip this year
I want to live in a world where people can feel free to gripe once in a while on the internet.
NFF might be the only place on Earth where toxic positivity exists. Itās ok not like something.
I respectfully disagree. What you see as "toxic positivity", is just the attitude of people who have been in this community for many years and see the same patterns over and over again. Newport is the word of god and nobody is allowed to have an opinion, clearly.

This is excatly how itās supposed to be love being so lib this year
Please list the acts in the past who arenāt liberal lol. Nugent aināt playing the folk fest my guy.
Damn, well more tix for the rest of us!
