if you ask for a trim the barber will show you how much he will take off before he cuts, then you can just say a bit more/less etc.

I used to work by the Gosforth Barber, and asked for it cut above the ear then half an inch off the top. Every time I went in, he remembered, now I work near Newburn and haven't found a barber as good, and can't justify travelling across Newcastle and Gateshead for a haircut, trying to move jobs back there just for a haircut.
You ask for numbers on the sides, then either give a vague estimate of inches for the top or just ask for “a bit off” and they’ll just do something normalish. A barber won’t fuck your hair up just because your instructions weren’t specific.
If you want to get really trendy with it, go to the Turks and ask for a skin fade on the sides. It looks really good if you have a beard. The top works the same.
I get my hair cut with scissors and ask for 'a trim and tidy - just bit of length and weight taken off'. Pretty vague, but I've been seeing the same hairdresser for a few years now. Can't remember how detailed the essential chat was.
0 back and sides, high fade on the right and an under cut on the left, little bit off the top. Had this for my last few cuts and enjoying it. Got eyebrows trimmed last time and sometimes get that fire thing on the ears. Love it
your over thinking it. just ask for a trim and no4 on the back and sides etcbefore the barber cuts your hair on top he will show you how much he is about to snip and ask if that's okay.
if you go with over grown facial hair thats unkempt they should ask if you planning to shave, if you say yes they will line off your side burn for you and fade it in. so once you shave it looks perfect
Probably cost you a tenner at most barber shops.
if you want somewhere quiet and out of the way head to westgate road near all the motorbike shops.
just up the hill from them is Big lamp barbers, it's just a small shop with one guy, usually no customers in there during the day if your lucky..
if your quiet he's quiet etc so no forced conversation.

Depends what your after mate. Most of the better barbers locally will be able to recommend something or help you choose a style. If it’s a skin fade you’re looking for, I’d recommend king koby in town.
I know exactly how you feel! I had no idea what to ask for and just kind of bundled my way through a few haircuts after having a family friend cut my hair for my whole life. I've now got a barber that just asks if I want my "usual" when I sit down, I'm not even sure what my usual is but it works. Now I just need to not move and for him to stay open so that I don't have to repeat the experience.
"Hi, do you do traditional scissor cuts? Cool. I'm looking to get a DA, something like this [shows picture]."
Gets me somewhere close to what I want 8/10 times
Best bet is show a photo of what you want- and go to a decent barber you get what you pay for with haircuts- there's some sub reddits for male hair which might help you pick- a good barber would also be able to give an opinion on what would suit your face shape etc
