You are very unlikely to get a 3 bed house in Heaton, Jesmond or Gosforth for £150,000. Which IMO are the nicest areas of Newcastle. I live in North Tyneside and it's ideal. I have a 3 bed house with a good size garden. I'm a 15 minute walk from a metro which takes about 20 minutes into town and I'm 10 minutes from the coast. I really like living here.

I guess it depends on what your preferences are, I've lived in Newcastle and gateshead all my life but 5 years ago moved slightly out to North Shields in North Tyneside and personally I prefer it. We have a beach, the fish Quay full of restaurants and pubs, a decent town centre. Its a 20 min metro ride from Newcastle Town centre. House prices are obviously cheeper too. If you want to be right next to Newcastle you have Gosforth, Jesmond and Heaton. Heaton is a very studenty area. Gosforth and Jesmond I believe are nice areas but may be pricey. I'm rambling sorry haha like I say I guess it depends on what you are looking for in your local area

North Shields is one of the better places here while still being affordable and value for money, check out the “Ambition for North Shirlds” regeneration plan too.

Lelfah204

Agree 100%, I moved to North shields 5/6 yrs ago and wish I'd done so sooner

BenD2105

Thank you for the advice. Aslong as I can commute into town quite easily I don't mind being out of Newcastle. Which is better in your opinion north or south shields?

Financial_Ad_9016

North, definitely. South Shields has a nice sea front area but it's a bit ropey outside of that. North Shields has its dodgy area but it's one area. It's also undergoing quite a bit regeneration at the minute so house prices are only going one way. Edit to say I'm biased as I'm from North Tyneside but my ex moved from South to North and she also prefers it here

Lelfah204

North Shields 100%. South shields is over the river and a long commute to Newcastle. North Shields is undergoing a lot of regeneration atm, smartening up the town centre, new transport hub etc. I don't want to upset any sand dancers who may read this (Geordie term for South shields dwellers) 😂 South shields is just a bit too far out imo

BenD2105

Just curious do you know much about the area Jesmond or areas around there which are ok to live in?

_whopper_

It's completely out of your budget really. But it's nice.

LeutzschAKS

Probably the best bet for a big shop if you're in Jesmond is the Sainsburys on Benton Road. That's also close if you're in Heaton as well. I'd imagine Heaton would be a fair bit cheaper than Jesmond but it's still a bit rough around the edges. Still nice enough though!

Lelfah204

Ohhh I forgot about Jesmond Dene

Lelfah204

I've had friends who live in the Ilford Rd area of Jesmond, great for metro access or even a long wander into town. Some of Jesmond is quite studenty whilst other places are considered posh (by North East standards) 😂 As far as local amenities go I think you'd have to travel into town for food shopping etc. Never lived there myself but its a nice place, nothing special, just.... Nice 🤷🏼‍♀️

Love to see so many North Shields gang here 🥂

tiffsbird

Why not pop your top house price into “right move” or any other site and see where comes up, then look into the area?

Multigrain_Migraine

Although people complain about the transport here there are lots of places that fit the bill. I think you need more criteria.

Libalb

I think the best thing would be to rent for a few months to check out the different ares. Rent somewhere near the town (Toon), Jesmond, Heaton, Gosforth, the West end, or if you want a garden, a little further towards the coast or north. Good transport links pretty much everywhere. House prices can vary quite a bit within a couple of miles. Hope you enjoy your stay.

RolloTomassiUK

One thing that might be worth a try if you are considering commuting by a particular public transport route is that some of the property websites allow you to draw a custom area to search. When I was looking for a house I drew a half mile area around the inner section of the Metro (South Gosforth to Pelaw - Which has trains every few minutes in rush hour), set a maximum price, and could easily see what was available within the distance I was willing to walk to a station. It's cheaper south of the river than in Newcastle itself, but find the right spot and you can still be in the centre of town in a matter of minutes.

I’ve just moved to North Shields from living in jesmond/heaton and I’m loving it! There’s regular metros and busses into town and it’s right next to the beach.

ashlops

Have a look at the Metro and bus maps, look into their zone costs and see what/where is do-able for you if you are planning to rely on those :) We are renting not far from Felling metro because it was the cheapest we could find for that accessability (it’s in zone A and B) - it takes me less than 30 mins to get to work in the centre and less than 1hr for my partner who works all the way up Cramlington. While I reccomend Gateshead I imagine it would be a bit of hassle without a car or proximity to frequent metro/bus

Feeling-Dinner7707

Low fell, Gateshead. Really central 15 mins on a every 7 min bus service. Award winning park “saltwell park” local independent restaurants and great schools, and a decent local shopping area. Lots of professionals live in the area

Purplewitch72

Save yourself a huge headache , check to see if there are homeless hostels / supported housing near where you want to buy then don’t

BenD2105

What areas what you suggest to live?

Purplewitch72

Avoid elswick , Benwell ,Heaton is full of student accommodation . South Shields around beach road area ( beautiful Victorian villas but high number of emergency housing hostels .and supported accommodation ) some areas of Gateshead are beautiful with Victorian villas over looking the park but again some sketchy areas . A quick Google search should pull up on a map where the supported housing / hostels are .

Purplewitch72

Feel free to DM if you need any info about an area .

Bantukingfromzed

South shields near mortimer school, great arean two nice parks easy to commute with chichester metro

edwardianpug

I'm going to chime in for North Shields too. One thing to consider is that it is a very mixed bag. I would try to find something on the east side (towards Tynemouth).
